Calc Projects, Programming & Tutorials / Re: nVVVVVV
November 14, 2014, 07:14:10 AM
Sorry to hear this is on hold, but I understand with Reuben progress. When this progress further, I'll add a sub-forum for it. It will most likely deserve one, like VVVVVV 84+ if you still work on it.

Also make them walls moar colored. :P

I want to point out that LDStudios game features smooth scrolling and that the shockiness of the movement was caused by the screenshare rather than lua. DJ those tiles look amazing in color O.O
Wait, how did he manage to achieve smooth scrolling with sprites in Lua? O.o I thought it was way too slow for that. If he did then that's pretty impressive.

Also thanks Pimath. Just beware of Mappy's quirkinesses. It can be annoying at times such as the lack of multiple Undo's.

Is sprite scaling fast in n2Dlib and Ndless? It might be best to just use 8x8 tiles scaled up to double their size rather than wasting 4 times more space with blown up graphics, but if it causes severe slowdowns then I guess not.

I like the green you have right now. Maybe you could do some wacky background like you did on Omnimaga v5, but green. And more wacky.
I would prefer to keep the background as simple as possible. I could add some background image but it will most likely be very simple and calc-related (or it could use some of the effects in the banner background)

Maybe change the background green to the same one as the logo border?
I tried that but then it looks almost identical to the Omnimaga SMF 2.0 theme back when it was still in beta (the one with the blue background) and the color is nearly identical to some past Omnimaga themes too.

Using the color from the signature version of the logo seems to give a decent result, though. I also liked how it came up with the 84+CSE version of the logo (where blue and green is combined into a very dark green, although that's the same as the 2004 Omni theme (although not as much of an issue considering Omni only used it for 6 months and over a decade ago). I also got another green idea, but it still has a bit of the hospital look.

1: one of the light blue from the signature logo
2: another one but darker
3: tried with a more blue-ish version of the hospital surgery room green.
4: Green from calc logo

IMHO I feel that green fits better with the logo and makes the site more different, but it depends of you too.

Practically none of the mods I want to install are working and I even had to re-install the entire board then restore the theme from an older backup when I tried to install one of the mods (I forgot which one, but the entire board ended up into white screens of death). In some other cases, some mods don't even do anything at all, even on the default them. Example: Stop Forum Spam, which changes absolutely nothing at all.

If you check SMF website, you will notice that there is only 1 single post mentionning HHVM out of their 3 million messages and it's in Spanish. I wonder if the SMF team is even aware that it exists at all.

I know some of you prefer HHVM because it's much faster than PHP, but it's severely slowing down site progress and now I'm pretty much forced to halt mod install and editing until we did the switch. I would rather use something slower but more compatible than delaying the site opening by weeks and risking data losses everytime somebody modifies something trivial.

EDIT: Also the SMF Fixes mod is too dangerous, because it's a mod of other mods. I tried uninstalling everything so that Stop Spam can be installed (else it wouldn't install unless installed first, like the old Omni arcade) and then after installing Youtube, SMF Fixes install broke the forum with a blank page. If you don't know by heart the perfect order in which to install mods before this and what not to install, then you are screwed.

We also need a forum banner for Tapatalk. Currently it shows the default. What is the image format for banners/logos in Tapatalk?

Maybe something like this?

I also disabled EzPortal because it had too many problems (sometimes, blocks appeared, then other times, they didn't. And the copyright was missing). Time to switch to PHP me thinks.
#17016
I really encourage buying one if you ever get the money :D. It doesn't have any ASM launcher yet but HP PPL alone is enough to be considered, especially if you plan to code. Just bear with the many OS bugs if you plan to use it for school.

Also, I tried the same program as above but without sprite scaling and I got 30 FPS.

Games / Read before posting your files
November 14, 2014, 02:20:03 AM
This section of the forum is where you can publish games that you have finished or that are in advanced stages. The files can be linked to or uploaded as attachments, but there are guidelines to follow when posting them to ensure that they won't be rejected. If your upload does not meet the criterias, it will be moved to this section in the appropriate category.

1) We accept games and programs for every platform (mobile, calculators, consoles, computers (vintage or modern), PICO-8, web, etc)

2) All files must include an executable and a readme.txt with instructions. They can be in ZIP, RAR or any other compressed archive that can be opened on Windows.

3) Files must not contain any material that violates CodeWalrus forum rules. NSFW content will be marked with NSFW tags, but blatant adult content and hate speech will not be allowed at all.

4) Programs must meet a certain level of quality in order to be accepted in the archives. For example, a number guessing game or a three minutes-long RPG Alpha build will not make it through.

5) Files must be uploaded by posting a new topic in this sub-forum:
-Subject: [Platform] Game Title
-Topic content: Description (screenshots are optional, but recommended), followed by download
-Download link: See below.

6) The download link can be either a direct post attachment or a link to the file or its info on Omnimaga, Cemetech, Ticalc, TI-Planet, Planète-Casio, HP Museum, Google Play, Apple Store, Github or SourceForge, but the download link must be easy to find.

7) All rules above are subject to change without any notice.

The plan was to have both versions and you can choose the difficulty when starting a new game. Since it's just some extra enemy buffs it's pretty easy to do.
Cool to hear, and do you plan to re-use the old enemy formulas or will you make each enemy separate data like in Reuben? Re-using old formulas to generate enemies would be smaller I think, but 2-byte integers' 65536 limit might be a problem.

Also, what would be cool is if we could navigate between chapter 2 and 5 as we see fit. I could understand why going back to chapter 1 is impossible because you go down through a river (unless you could move back up via a pathway above the river then jump down a cliff?) but the only reason why the original game didn't let you do so is because it was split in chapters to fit in RAM.
#17019
Oh wow I didn't know the custom profile fields supported dropdowns O.O. That's cool I guess. Also nice touch to disable the default gender option and use custom fields lol. I guess this renders the forum stats male/female ratio unuseable but it's not too bad.
Quote from: Juju on November 14, 2014, 12:31:55 AM
3. Complain to HHVM's GitHub and IRC channel
4. Also complain to SMF

Past experience tell me that if we do such thing, we're in for months and months of wait, if our request is even considered at all. We might be better off doing 1 or switch to PHP.
Quote from: Juju on November 13, 2014, 11:41:44 PM
Oh, and what about a download mod?
The file archives will be integrated directly into the forums, as categories and sub-forums, like Omni had back in 2005-2007. There will only be 1 sub-forum for now, though (topic titles will include the platform in them).
#17020
So I worked a bit on the forum theme last night, the hardest part being figuring out how to center the logo (something unusual on a SMF forum) and the theme is far from finished. However, I was unsure about what background color to choose around the site. Currently it's dark turquoise or something, but would people prefer something different and what? What I know, though, is that using the same green as the inner logo green looked ugly, though, and a gray-ish green looks more like an hospital surgery room than anything else. :P

Thanks for notifying us juju. :) As for Tapatalk, will the change make it hard to upgrade the mod? If possible, you should let us know in the staff board what code needs to be replaced and where if Tapatalk ever needs to be updated, in case we are ever required to update the mod.

I got logged out again this morning. I visited the site for like  a few pages, I think wrote a reply, and got logged out. Re-logged in everything is fine. Gotta figure out why this happens though.
This might be due to the fact I changed the board URL to codewalr.us instead of www.codewalr.us last night, so everybody got logged out. However, let us know if this happens again.

Also, I tried a 3rd gender mod that pimath showed to me last night, but unfortunately it's only compatible with SMF 2.0 RC2 and older. It shows error warnings if I try to emulate an older version of SMF in the package manager. So if we want 3rd gender we will have to find an alternative.

Also whoever decides to write SMF mods need to make sure they can uninstall properly too. I saw mods on SMF website that installs fine, but then won't uninstall at all because the code to revert back to is not the same as the code to replace.

Something much more annoying is that I get a session timeout for posting just by reading the threads. >.>
Ugh I remember on Omni v4 through v6 this happens a lot to me and it was irritating. For some people they couldn't post at all sometimes. Does it happen frequently? This might be another  thing to look into in the server settings. The forum itself is currently set so that sessions last 2880 seconds (so normally such error should only occur if you take over 48 minutes to post).

Hmmm, do you want me to write a first draft the forum rules? I already have a draft (kinda) here.
I already had some ideas in mind, but I'll check this out. A lot of the rules are supposed to be similar to Omni, though, in terms of hostility-free-ness. It's just that admin stuff will probably be more public (eg this topic) sometimes so that members will know that we are doing stuff. We still need a global e-mail address, though, and some notifications sent via it, in case a member cannot access the site for whatever reasons and also for moderator/admin logs.

I'm looking at this.
I suspect compatibility issues with hhvm. Uploading large files, avatars and accessing the avatars setting page caused a blank page too.

Make the zelda game happen :O Were the Nemesiat sprites eventually re-used for ROL3? Because some of them look like that.
Yeah sadly the Zelda game stalled because of xLIBC driving my interest away from pure BASIC. It turned out that I kinda lost interest in xLIBC afterward, though. Maybe one day I'll revive the Zelda game, since it didn't seem to run that slow. It was a bit like Zelda on an Atari 5200 or something. As for Nemesiat sprites they were done 4 years after ROL3 release.

Quote from: pimathbrainiac on November 13, 2014, 03:21:37 PM
Hmmm, would you mind posting some of the colorized sprites here for easy reference? (as of now I have to search omni for them for nReuben)
I'm planning to post the Reuben stuff in a separate thread actually. I just need to get around hosting them elsewhere if they are not already.
#17023
Pics or it didn't happen. :P

On a more serious note, I wonder what you are going for in terms of scrolling and tile by tile movement? Will Reuben move smoothly or case by case like in LDStudio's game? Also is there scrolling or even smooth scrolling?

As suggestion, if you are going for 2x 8x8 tileset, you should try to make every pixel aligned properly, unlike in juju's Supersonic Ball PC game. Basically, have everything move at multiples of 2 pixels intervals rather than 1.

As for the maps this could be handy, but I don't have colored versions of the Reuben 2 maps (click to enlarge. I set forum image size limits):

#17024
Online Today and Char left in post modifications look like they are in working order. However, I might uninstall stuff randomly at some points if they are missing from the new theme.

Also avatar upload is broken. Shows white page of death. Also, avatar galleries are broken image links too. They default to 127.0.0.1

EDIT: Logos have been fixed.

Drawing & Animation / Some sprites by DJ Omnimaga
November 13, 2014, 12:30:47 AM
So I thought I would cross-post those sprites I posted over the years on Omni so I can also have my portfolio here. You can re-use some of them if you give me credits, but ask me first in case I am currently using them in a project, so that we can avoid having two projects using the same tileset simultaneously, for example.

Reuben & ROL3 tiles (most Reuben monsters are Final Fantasy/Lufia/Metroid/Dragon Warrior rips, recolored for my needs, though):

Illusiat 10 final boss:

Fake Metroid III screenshot (Halloween 2007 prank)

Nemesiat/Illusiat 6 xLIB Remake idea (mockup)

Another one

Nemesiat II tilesets (re-used in another project then eventually colorized:

ROL2 PC characters idea (re-used later in an RPG by juju which never got far)

Reuben PRIZM mockup

Animation near the end of Zelda: Dark Link Quest

Reuben Quest 3 title screen idea

Illusiat 13 title screens and mockups
TI-Nspire style (ASM/C):

PRIZM style:

TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition style (TI-BASIC):

Original TI-83+/84+ version:

Zelda BASIC CSE (160x240 mode)

Supersonic Ball animated tiles

Color Reuben battle sprite

Dynamic tiles example from Super Walrii Land (can be recreated 30 times a second, just to tell how fast HP PPL is)

More sprites meant for HP Prime games, but finally never used
