Recommend me a sub-€45 mouse
« on: June 08, 2016, 08:46:12 am »
So, I noticed that my middle mouse click is dying on my Logitech G300, which is a PAIN because I use it all the time. I really like the mouse, so naturally I'm looking at the g300s as a replacement but maybe you guys know something better. The mouse I'm looking for must at the very least have the following functionality:

1) Next/prev page buttons
2) DPI switch. Call it a 'sniper button' if you want, I usually don't use it for sniping but sometimes you just need that temp extra accuracy.
3) DPI ranging between at least 250 and 2000

Throw me some suggestions. I'd rather not have Razer, I don't really like their designs. FWIW, €45 is about 50 dollars.

I broke my R.A.T.7 not so long ago and was looking for a replacement too.

Well, in stores, sellers would be like "Linux? I don't know that Pokémon" when I would ask them "does this expensive mouse here work on Linux?" so I just bought the cheapest gaming mouse they had thinking that at worst, if it doesn't work, I didn't lose a lot of money. So that was a Spirit of Gamer Pro-M8 (you can tell by the name that's not some top-tier mouse :P) for 17€...

Well, it works perfectly well on both Linux and Windows (not OSX though, some buttons are swapped for some reason, you need some software to fix that) with the three features you mention and is so cheap you can get two of them and more for the price of a G300 :P
The only "problem" maybe is the DPI switch, which is one button only that wraps between 4 modes. So when you're in a certain mode and you want the previous one, you can't press a "previous" button, you have to press the only button three times...

And as a bonus, it has a double-click button, really convenient in cookie-clicker :P

In any case, do not get the Logitech g100s. It's under 45 euros IIRC and I once got it for sale for $20 at a local store, but the left-click button fails after only a few weeks of use so left-clicks often won't register until the 3th or 4th click if you press hard enough. That's a known issue with the g100s. I don't know if other gXXX models have similar issues, so maybe your issue is related? Right now I just use a cheap Logitech mouse I got for $12 which will most likely fail after 2 years of use, but I'm ok with just 3 buttons.

The G100s doesn't look like it's for me anyway, it's a 3 button mouse.

I usually google whether stuff works on linux before buying. Much better than asking sellers. :P
In the end I ended up writing my own driver for my deathadder, because razercfg detaches the kernel driver which is extremely annoying.

Haha nice. I just use xdotool.

Yeah I was saying in case you decided to go with another GXXX model with more buttons. I don't know if their build quality is on-par with the G100s or if it was just a G100s specific flaw or a bad batch with higher failure rate (like what happened with the entire TI-83 Plus Silver Edition line). I also recall some Logitech mouses that were not low-end that had issues with the left-click registering two clicks from time to time instead of one). Make sure to read many reviews and forum topics first. In my case I prefer as few buttons as possible unless they aren't getting in my way, so that it reduces risks of accidental clicks.
And as a bonus, it has a double-click button, really convenient in cookie-clicker :P

Yeah that's what I use (I assume you mean the one on MalwareForge... er I mean SourceForge, right?). That's how I got such an high score at the Star Wars game in the Omnimaga arcade

It was not my mouse in particular. Many other g100s line had the same problem. See reviews and forum posts and you'll notice many reports about the left-click stopping working properly after just a week or so and that it's apparently a design flaw. What is strange is that it never happened with the right-click, just the left-click, so it's probably the assembling factory that was not setup properly.

I have a Razer 3blue (well thats what  i think its called) its a 15-20 dollar mouse with customizable dpi, two buttons for your thumb, and lights. (wireless aswell.) It may not be razer, but its served me well for 4 years.
