It was the first walrus in Canada and the 7th in North America born in a zoo. The event is being watched by the scientific community since it's so rare.

I was surprised it was the first in so long. I was sure most zoos had one or two walruses. Anyway IIRC Quebec aquarium now has 3 if this calf makes it through so we will have 4 :walrii: right where CW was born.

Baby walrii are cute.

Indeed. I am curious if they will be able to let him roam freely with his parents in the aquarium in a few months? That is surely gonna attract lots of visitors considering the rarity of the event. Right now they are confined to a special area and monitored to ensure they are in good health and are apparently doing well so far.

Also I just learned earlier that it's not one walrus that was pregnant there but two. This means another baby walrus is coming next month or so. O.O

Is there a way to make a baby walrii sprite following a normal walrii  ;)

Technically, the teal one was meant to be a baby walrus with tusks, since it was made for Easter 2015 and came out of an egg. But there are 8x8 and 16x16 Walrii sprites already.

Cool! But, why are :walrii: births so rare?
u/Dream of Omnimaga May 12, 2016, 07:55:31 PM
I'm fairly sure that it's in zoos that they are rare. Probably due to not being in their natural habitat and not keen to mate around humans or other animals, and the fact there are so few walruses in zoos/aquariums.
u/alexgt May 13, 2016, 02:19:23 AM
^ That and some zoos keep animals from breeding (or certain ones at least I am not sure why though)

I guess that it depends of if they can afford to feed an extra baby animal in long terms, which can be understandable, although it still kinda sucks if they do that and prevent the specie from reproducing. >.<
u/alexgt May 13, 2016, 12:13:23 PM
Yeah, that would kinds suck to those walruses :P

Well, that's one of the points of a zoo, to preserve species (some zoos are terrible at it but that's another story), and as such some zoos are well-equipped to make animals give birth.

Yep true lol. I think it depends of if they are managed well or not and laws in place in specific countries.
