Before embracing C, i used to make my games with Rpg Maker/Game Maker and (sometimes) Lua.
I used to be very creative and was a huge fan of Sonic.
Sadly, i lost a good chunk of them since then with the downfall of Megaupload, yoyogames sandbox gone...
I still have some of them though !
In this thread, i will post all my old games i can find.

I will begin with my very last Game Maker game, Sonic Run 4.
The Sonic Run series is a series of games made by Comet Games Company.
He did Sonic Run 2, which used to be on yoyogames (now gone).
And then there's the infamous Sonic Run 3, which was submitted to the Sonic Amateur Games Expo 2011.
It was noted for its lack of content and overall poor quality.

I made an unofficial sequel, Sonic Run 4, which follows more or less the games.

Sonic meets Pana the hedgehog and fell in love with her.
However, Pana asks him to gather over 9000 corpses of animals to win her heart.
Without any hesitation, Sonic goes on a rampage.

I made a playthrough of my own game here :

You can download it here

The game, when the first demos were released in early 2012, were not well received.
Most people were turned off by the game's plot and gameplay, they did not get the joke.
As a result, it stayed unfinished. (just like the other games in the series, except for Sonic Run 2)

Funny graphics :)
Quite difficult to jump with the right timings on the enemies victims.
Which tool did you use for that?

So you tried the game ?
I'm surprised you were curious to the point of giving the game a try.
I used Game Maker 4 for the game and Ms Paint for the graphics.

Of course, i forgot to mention the non-sensical dialogue as well as my poor writing at the time.
Eggman: "You know nothing fool ! It's Chaos, the god of sex !"
Or...
Eggman: "Shut up and listen ! I command you to c Mephiles !"

I was probably on crack when i made the game but i still find it funny.
u/garvalf July 06, 2016, 10:03:54 PM
yes, I tried it on Linux with Wine and it worked fine.
u/Dream of Omnimaga July 06, 2016, 10:38:41 PM
You did crack? O.O

Just kidding, I will give Sanic Run 4 a try when I get home. Sad that you lost most of your stuff. I always prefer keeping backups in case since big game services are not immune to shutdowns. Even Steam could shut down without warning. Thanks for sharing your old stuff :3=

That's why i'm now publishing the source code to my games on github.

But anyway, i was able to retrieve all my games on yoyogames thanks to archive.org.
Here they are :

3D Sonic Arena

My first true attempt at 3D.
You can clearly see why i have never attempted 3D ever since then...
The controls are awful, the sprites look squished, the graphics look awful and the game just isn't fun.
And i spent a lot of my time on this game !

Download

Sonic Speedway

It's better than Big Rigs but just barely...
There are no items, only one opponent and only one race.
At least you can lose without having the game to crash...:
I quickly stopped working on it after i released the first demo.

Download

Sonic Adventure Reflexion

Of course, i saved the best for the last.

Sonic Adventure Reflexion has a pretty bad presentation but it has decent puzzles.
It's pretty hard though : A health bar that never regenerates, 3 lives and no continues.
It still is a better game than the other two...

Download

So yeah...
You can see how different my games/emulators are compared to what i did earlier.
My games were actually not that great...
But i have more games for you !

Next time, i'll take a look at my Rpg maker games !

Thanks for the links.  I'll try them later to see if they match Big Rigs in quality :P

Next game is a RPG Maker 95 game i worked on for a good while before i stopped working on it...
I originally posted the game on rpgcreative.net but in a controversial decision by its author,
they turned it into a website for his own game engine, removing all the posts on it....

Sonic and the Alien Invasion (Sonic & L'invasion) is an adventure/rpg title with the first demo released in November 2010.
Basically, it was a Sonic fan game where i wanted to throw everything i wanted to see in a game like this.
Not quite meme-esque though... remember, this was in 2010 and reddit and all that $hit were still not that popular.

Story
Eggman is tired of being constanly beaten by Sonic.
Feeling his inventions won't be able to defeat Sonic, he decided to make an alliance with the aliens
and he convinced them to go after sonic.
Sonic later encounters the aliens and knows he's in trouble but little does he know eggman was behind it all...

The game is all in french though...
Plus it has some references to french culture so english speakers won't get it...

Chapter 1 was finished and 2 other chapters were planned.
Chapter 2 was barely started and Chapter 3 was not even planned (story-wise).

Over the years, i became fed up with RPG95 and i started to lose interest in it after 2012 or so.

Screenshots :

For the first time, i have decided to upload it here :
https://gameblabla.nl/files/Sonic_Invasion.7z

The game runs best in Windowed mode, especially under Windows 2000+ and Wine.

Ports to other platforms
While i was developing the PC version, i was already looking at porting to old retro platforms.
The first attempt was the Colecovision port.
Unfortunely, the demo was only 6 screens long and i had already filled up the small ROM : 32 kb.
It was basically impossible to port the game to that console and i gave up working on it.

Next port is the NEC PC-Engine one.

This one is a poor approximation of the PC version and it was painful to program.
I also gave up working on that port.

Last attempt is the Master System port.

Learning my mistakes from the PC-Engine port, this port is different.
It was redisigned as a visual novel with branching paths.
However, it has some graphical glitches and i lost interest in it;

You can download the PC-Engine port here and the Master system one here.

Stay tuned for more of my old rpg maker games.

Looks pretty, um, interesting. (Lol Joueur du Grenier and snorting dishwasher soap.)
u/Dream of Omnimaga September 19, 2016, 04:34:21 PM
Lol interesting XD. Also the RPG Maker 95 layout brings back old memories. It was interesting that it was 640x480 like RMXP despite being older than 2000 and 2003. I didn't know 95 supported full pictures either. Some of those port graphics look pretty cool given the old platforms limitations too.

Here's another embarassament of mine (and not my best game) Sonic Drift 3.
This was a game i made for the Alexdor 2009 season using Klik & Play. (it was used illegally, rofl)
When i asked the creators about it, they seemed to be quite mad but they did not want to take action.
Since it's a Klik & Play game, this only works on Windows XP or inferior.

BEHOLD !

There's a solo mode, a time limit mode and a multiplayer.
The multiplayer is believe or not the best part of this but everything else is, in retroperpective, pretty bad.
Don't play with Sonic with this one !

The judges at Alexdor.info were not amused and promptly rated the game 0/5.
This, among with some other games i released, led to a series of measures where they would refuse a game if it does not pass minimum requirements.
They may not want to admit it but my (crappy) games allegedly led to this.

Next time, we'll look at Sonic Klik Blast, another (perhaps even worse than this one) abomination.

Ah I see you also made XP or older games like me. (*points to The Reign of Legends 0*) :P. Anyway lol the first screenshots kinda reminds me of Sanic :P
u/gameblabla May 11, 2018, 10:45:03 PM
And now for the best (worst) part...

Of course, i needed to talk about this one.
It's horrible beyond disbelief, i can't stop laughing thinking about it. XD

It's so bad, it's almost a work of art.

I thought it was ready for release.
If you think the graphics are the worst part then believe me,
they are the best part
.

It's very simple, your character moves like a very slow car.
On top of that, Sonic starts very slow and then goes very fast.
Jumping is also problematic.
It's poorly animated, sound effects play way too loud and multiplayer is a joke.

Btw, this only plays on Wine or Windows Xp or less.(MIDI music with timidity)
It doesn't work on Windows Vista+. Bonus points for Linux !

The judges were even more critical than they were with Sonic Drift 3 and
slapped a 0 on it.

You can give it a try here :
