Title: [PC] Wal-Rush! (Scratch/Flash)
Post by: JWinslow23 on December 14, 2015, 12:33:14 am
EDIT: The contest is over! Game is at https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/91337413/ , and you can download the source, .swf, and .exe here (http://codewalr.us/contests/201601-walriicontest/JWinslow23.zip)!

Original message:
QuoteI have decided I have a high likelihood of participating in the contest. So, I thought I'd post my game in this thread.

At the moment, this game is internally known as "WALRII". I have not decided a name or logo, but the game is going to be an endless flier where you are the walrus (http://bit.ly/1I2p7M8), and you must fly for as long as possible, avoiding obstacles and eating tons of fish (https://codewalr.us/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpiskel-imgstore-b.appspot.com%2Fimg%2Fe4687cb3-a086-11e5-bc75-39b16326686d.gif&hash=88f1e7fee9c6a4fdbedca9dd2f53193e) :3=

I do not have a calculator screenie as of yet, as my calc is out of batteries and I thus cannot transfer the files and record until I change them. So, here is a version in Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu) that I am developing alongside the calc version. Besides fish and a scrolling background, this is also how far along I am with the calc version.

More screenies as I develop!

P.S. if I make the Scratch version public and don't submit it to the competition, would I be disqualified if I try to submit an Axe version? If not, I'll keep the Scratch project hidden.

This game looks like it will turn out fun. I think that you should do something like Crossy Road, where you can unlock more characters to play as. And it will work particularly well with this contest, with all of the different sprites. But good luck!

Wow that looks great! I guess you could submit both if they get finished, in one entry, so more people can play it, but of course if Scratch is like Game Maker or RPG Maker then only the calc version would be eligible :P . Just make sure the PC version runs at the same speed on every computer so that it's playable. I hope it gets finished. :)

Scratch source code looks like this (this is not mine, don't worry):
(https://codewalr.us/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Frosettacode.org%2Fmw%2Fimages%2F1%2F18%2FScratch_User_Input_Graphical.png&hash=ab447adb49fa7e0fd9b9e0dce968db85)
It consists of commands you do yourself just like regular code, except it's presented in the form of puzzle pieces/stacks and explains what it does in clear language. There's a diverse range of projects on Scratch, all without having the code made for you (well, except for remixes of other people's projects, where their code is given to you for you to tamper with :P ).

I hope to make this a fun game to commemorate the day the walrus started to fly (October 24, 2014 iirc), and to make the obvious game choice based on the trailer :P

That looks weird O.O but I guess that can work. In any case, though, I would like to see the calc version finished :P

And yeah CW officially got founded on Oct 24th 2014.

Don't you worry, the calc version will take priority. The Scratch version is just so I can 1. get a version of the game working faster, and 2. work on coding at any time I want, and port that to calc later. Also, who doesn't love multi-platform titles?

(Scratch requires Flash, BTW. I'm using Puffin to test and play on mobile, else I'm doing it on a computer with Flash installed)

At the moment, my calculator is completely out of batteries, to the point where it won't start, so I can't tell you until I buy more batteries, but it runs pretty fast as I remember it. I'll be using Axe for the calc version (as stated in the topic... :P ). My goal with the Scratch version is also to make it look like how it would look on-calc, so that minus the background, fish, and testing variable display is how the calc version LOOKS.

I've also heard of Dolphin for Android being good (I don't have Android). And thus far, there is a speed problem, but only slight. Part of it could be that my code is entirely unoptimized because readability :P

6 MHz if possible, and if not, then 15 MHz. I haven't even thought about using Full yet :P

I said I'd do a screenie when I got the fish, but I decided I'd do it early. Here is what it looks like with the background added. Before you ask, yes, the mines kill you. (also, yes, they're directly ripped from the original flying walrii animation on the HP Prime :P ).

This seems slow to me. Maybe because I'm checking for some stuff I haven't implemented yet, maybe it's because my code is largely unoptimized, maybe both, but I hope I can get a speedup.

Download link attached, run it from the homescreen :P

Hahah, thank you!

DO NOT READ THIS UNLESS YOU ARE A CONTEST MODERATOR: ShowHide
That binary I posted is not of my Walrii program, in any prototype, beta, or final form or otherwise. It is a TI-BASIC program that has these contents:

ClrHome:Disp "Are you kidding?","You think I'd","disqualify my","entry this early","on? No way! :P

I have broken no rules. I just had a little fun :P

I'm glad that this program is fake and not from the real contest entry <_<

Also this looks nice so far. I was worried about the motion blur making anything hard to see, but it doesn't seem too bad. Does it flicker a lot on the real machine?

Hey, don't give me that look! Gah :banghead:

And thanks. It actually does flicker very noticeably (not enough to ruin the gray effect, but enough for you to see that it's flashing two images over and over). I might as well make this 15MHz only. :-\

It depends. If the flicker isn't that much worse than in Desolate then I think it should be fine. Even Reuben-BASIC-like flicker (when it ran at 15 MHz) would be tolerable, but with scrolling it would not be ideal. 15 MHz is fine for the contest.

The contest deadline is in two weeks, so I'm finishing up my game. I'm adding some actual graphics for numbers instead of the default Scratch variable display, and as well, I'll add a title screen and a proper ending screen. I'll basically add all the goodies that make it polished come the next few days.

Here is my game as it stands right now:

Yes, I just wasn't lucky enough to get a calculator powerup. (by the way, this gives you 50 points upon collecting it as well! :D)

Do you think that a random structure generator like that would be fine? Or should I give you more fish? Or less mines? I could also change the distance between everything if that helps, because I don't want people raging over my game and throwing their computers out of their windows :P

Well, it's only 3 days before the end of the contest, and I decided to clean up my game as it is now.

The new title:
Wal-Rush!

This, (https://vid.me/U1YK) barring any unforeseen glitches that will hopefully be patched before the judges start to play them, is what the final product will look like. (highscore loading and saving has been cut down considerably, it's still very slow. like, really.)

Also, due to the way projects are shared on Scratch, I will make this open for anyone to play for a while before the deadline. I cannot make this playable for the judges without making it also playable for anybody else on the internet (that can find it, anyways :P ). So what this means is, for up to a few minutes before the deadline, if you're watchful enough, you can start to play before the deadline actually comes. Think of it as my little obligatory treat to you, the player :D

Keep an eye out on my Scratch profile (https://scratch.mit.edu/users/JWinslow23/) for the game! ;)

Now that is a reason why I will never learn scratch. I want to be able to get full access to games I write and decide where to host them. Scratch is too restrictive on that point, plus what if Scratch website ever shuts down?

You have access to games you write, but until you press a button labeled "Share", only you can see it. Once you share, though, anyone can play it, and anyone can see the code. They can also modify the code to make a "Remix" on their own account while still giving credit to you, as well.

There are also many workarounds that allow you to turn your Scratch project into a .exe file, or even a Java applet if you so desired. However, those require more effort than I want to put in. Which means, any amount of effort :P

And if the Scratch website shuts down for some odd reason, there's always the offline editor. ;)
Title: Wal-Rush! will be released in 2 days!
Post by: JWinslow23 on January 17, 2016, 07:45:50 pm
Bump.

I have converted my game to .sf2 (only playable in the Scratch editor online), .sfw (playable in the Flash Player, any SWF player, or your internet browser), and .exe (Windows executable), and have submitted those files as well. They will become available after the deadline, attached to the first post. But who knows, I might just trick you all again with a joke attachment again, so watch out for that ignore that :P

That is good to hear.  I also received your entry :)

I'm glad you could make it in time. I'll test the entry later to see if it runs fine.

Ok so your entry is confirmed to work, and is also fun. :)

My only suggestion would be to maybe make it so you can die if you fly too high outside the screen at the top or make more spikes appear there, because I noticed the game is much easier if I hold space down and stay at the top at any time (I can still get hit but rarely). :P

I'll see if I can't update the online version, and then the standalone programs, before the deadline is up. I'll just make it so you can't go too far up ;)
EDIT: Updated all versions, and sent the new version.

Yeah I was wondering about that lol, but thankfully the PC version was sent in time. :)

Awesome game, by the way. There should be an option to enable colors. My only issue with the PC executable is that PrintScreen and Copy/Paste stops working in Windows 7 as long as the game is running.

Well, I have no idea about what that is or how to fix it. I never intended to make that executable :P

I guess it's the tool you used to make the exe. It seems to take a bit too much control on the PC so I'm surprised Avast didn't complain. <_<

I ran it on Windows 10 Pro, and Windows Defender jumped out at me, saying "programs like these could damage your computer" and all that what-not.
I had to check the box that said "I understand the risks" so I could play.

Oh, that might just be the warning that XP and higher shows when running third-party applications or IE. But it's possible that the tool JWinslow23 might have some crap hidden in it, since we get what we pay for. I guess the best is to use the swf file or Scratch version anyway, and specifically the Scratch version if you want to ensure 100% compatibility.

Okay. The game was fun, that's all that matters. I'd love to play it on my calc, though. Wonder what it'd look like on an 84+ CE...

Yeah, a calculator version would definitively be nice. As for a CE version, the author could probably even use the original graphics, but xLIBC would be out of the question for speed reasons.

Most antivirus software (including Windows Defender) warn the user when trying to execute a file that isn't confirmed to be safe. This means that it will pretty much always show a warning with a newly released program that hasn't been used by a lot of people. So basically, your antivirus can't help you with that file and you'll have to rely on common sense. In this case, I thrust JWinslow23 and assume that he didn't embed viruses in his software to set our browser's home page to the rich roll youtube video and show popups that make us lose the game at regular intervals. So I clicked 'I understand the risk and want to run this file' and it worked great.

"rich roll" :P

The only real risk is the "advertisement" (if you can call it that) for the SWF to EXE converter I used for the EXE file. But that should not be a worry, unless you actually try to click the option to get it :P

Oh I know that JWinslow would never do that. But there are software companies or code/project hosting services, such as SourceForge, that did bundle malware/junkware inside people's project binary releases in the past, without the author's consent. In Vaysoft's case, it seems that the only thing it does is hijacking the computer's clipboard during runtime and showing an ad on launch, though, which could simply be crappy coding from Vaysoft's part. Sometimes we don't have any free alternative (eg when I released PC games I had to use Clickteam install maker, which shows an ad after install, and Game Maker games will show a pop up on game launch)

Great idea! When can we get a team of virus coders on this?
/me runs

You wouldn't believe how frustrating it is for entry level computer users (noobs) if you add a batch file with
@echo off
shutdown -s -t 00

to the autostart folder.

Did this to my brother a few years back and he was really mad :P

Darn, I wouldn't have wanted this to happen to me a few years ago. >.< Some people would probably just format their computer. There are people who thinks that when they get a virus, they need to replace their computer completely.

Yeah same, especially that back in the early 90's, viruses that were transmitted via floppy disks could actually damage your computer hardware. Now they mainly do annoying stuff or render your OS useless, requiring a reformat. But older people were not raised with technology so they aren't as familiar with it. Oh and when they get viruses they can panic really hard.

Yeah, that reminds me, my friends grandma had a PC that we played minecraft on, and I made a little mod so there were folders scattered over the desktop. And apparently (this was after I left) she thought it was a virus and freaked out xD

Lol, that reminded me. The guidance counselor for my grade at my school tried to show us a study tip website, but they reformatted it since the last time she was on it so she thought the website was glitching and that they need to fix the glitches...

The worst part, her browser of choice was Internet Explorer.  :banghead:
