Title: [Android] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: DarkestEx on February 12, 2015, 04:19:51 pm
To all Walrusses :walrii: out there.
We are porting our calculator game TwoStep (http://bit.ly/TwoStepPost) to Android (in the future)

Special thanks go to
@AliceIsDead, because of making awesome textures and animations for the game.
@DJ Omnimaga, for donating some of his great music to the game.
@soelchf, for donating the Google Play registration fee.
@CKH4, for testing the app.

Cumred_Snektron can help, if he wants. He just needs to PM me.

Technical
We are using libgdx, IntelliJ Idea and a Motorola Moto G2 for debugging.
I set up multiple gradle scripts and a crosscompiler to release to the different platforms.

Progress
Complete rewrite pending...

Availability
The game will be available for all platforms from my homepage (http://media.muessigb.net/TwoStep) and for Android aswell from Google Play.

Price
The game will be free. Maybe there will be some ads in the Android version some day, but nothing is planned by now.

Levels
Theoretically users could make levels by their own and share the via bluetooth or the internet, but not right now.
There will be levelpacks embedded.

Scoreboard
I guess I will connect it to Google Play's stats service. Or create my own stats service.

Screenshots
Android version:

Betatesting download
Download the Android version here (http://benediktmuessig.tk/projects/TwoStep/app/testing/TwoStep_2002152200.apk).

This project is ON HOLD!

Keep checking out this thread, as it will keep you updated.

As long as the calculator version also remains alive I don't mind actually :P

Of course will the calculator version allways be the most important for me, but as my friends think the games makes real fun, we decided to make an app too, when the most of the calculator functions are tested and made. We will keep both project alive :)

Yes, he (soelchf) wants to sign up soon here and on Cemetech.
So he will join in the next days :)

Good luck with your test.
I wrote french today. And I wasn't really good  >:(

Just make sure that if you work as a team that everyone backup their progress on Github or something regularly so everyone has access to the code, resources and graphics. In the past, many TI team projects died because one developer suddenly vanished off the face of the Earth.

I would actually discourage doing such thing. Better study more so you can actually improve (although with languages it can be hard to remember so much stuff, especially written French, which is a nightmare to learn to write even as native French-speaking person.

Don't worry i'm not the cheating type. And we have our 'binas' which is like a physics, math, biology and chemistry bible we can use on the test. It contains all formulas we have to know :)

Oh. I'm normally never cheating. But in this case, I wrote two primary subject tests within two days and I came home from school very late the day before. I learned all the time when I came home, but the in the test, I forgot some words and my pal helped me with them.
I did'nt knew about the french test, as I was sick for 1 1/2 weeks and just got told about it on Tuesday.
So don't be too disappointed about me  :(

Sorry to hear you were sick, though >.<

The only reason my little sister isn't going to some lower level school is cause she cheats all the time.
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!

The day she gets caught, however, then end up on watch during every test, I wish her good luck >.<

In Quebec and France a few years ago there used to be an online paid service where you could purchase pre-made essays of any topic then use the content to cheat. I'm unsure if such site exists anymore since governments probably got them shut down, but I remember this made news a few years ago and I was apalled that students would go to such lenght in order to get good notes. It was also very common during an exam to see another student try to watch over the other student shoulder to see his answers and many people did that. But later on when you get older the problem is if in the future you need the knowledge you were supposed to learn in class as a student but chose to cheat instead of learning then you'll be in trouble. For example, if you plan to program games but cheated your way through trig, geometry and physics, or if you plan to go to litterature but never actually wrote an essay of your own through hi school.

Anyway back on topic, for the Android game do you plan to use new graphics and higher resolution or do you plan to stick to calculator-style, but colored to keep it true to the original?

Actually, I could let the user choose, what design he wants. But I prefer new HD graphics for the app version. You can still use the emulator to play with the real feeling.

Actually being able to choose between the graphics would be nice, although if the new version has several more features than the calc one, then it might look weird with calc graphics mixed with the more advanced stuff. :P

Also for which version of Android the game will be?

No, red is just for development.
The target Android SDK is 4.4 Lollipop right now, but will be changed to 2.3 when in release.

Aah ok. Supporting older versions would definitively be a good thing since many people still have older phones for whatever reasons (either they are fine with them or can't afford an upgrade) and since your game is 2D and not as intensive as a game like Minecraft, supporting older versions of Android should not be too hard. Just make sure that the game speed is throttled on newer devices so it won't run too fast. :P Will there be sound?

I could really need some free background music!

Would be great, DJ Omnimaga!
I'd be extremely happy about some background music too!

I don't know how you like it, but this is how I would make the textures: (Tile block) (https://codewalr.us/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbenediktmuessig.tk%2Fprojects%2FTwoStep%2Fapp%2Fpics%2Fpixelart%2F4alice%2FTile3.png&hash=75f36e41eac9552dd7a547b846b8b3dd)
AliceIsDead is helping me with some nice Pixel Art, so I'm looking forward getting some real nice textures.

Hmm. I thought about this. Actually for such projects I prefer Dropbox, as I don't want to share our game's source code to the world. A private Dropbox share between trusted persons would be more secure.

Do you plan to make it open-source once finished or if developement slows down? I never do that during HP Prime dev due to risks of code theft by one person in particular, but once I have a demo out I usually keep my source available so that other people can learn. I usually release the program on multiple sites so people know I made it.

Well, as it will be released on Google Play, I don't really want to release the source. Maybe sometime later. But if I (for any reason) cancel the project, I'll release the source publicly on github.

Well, everyone who works with me or contributes something to me will be included to see the source code.
E.g. AliceIsDead for the artwork (that will be made), Cumred_Snektron in case he wants to help, soelchf, as he sponsors me the Google Play fee and he had the idea of the game and DJ Omnimaga in case he wants to see it, or contributes some of his nice music. :)

Also check this out (Textures are made by me for testing, touch works -moves the cursor-, random map is generated, no actual gameplay implemented yet):

DJ: One person in general or one person that you know of who is particularly bad offender?
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 20, 2015, 04:02:32 am
@ DarkestEx Oooh that looks nice. I like the graphics, although some might seem confusing if someone gets the game with no instructions. Do you plan to have larger maps that fills the screen or playable area for the Android version? Also is the game dependent on a specific resolution like Supersonic Ball or will graphics be scaled up/down on larger and smaller screens?

As for publishing source if you slow down progress, indeed it was so that if the project ever showed signs of tanking (like 99.9% of all projects on the Internet) then if you disappear for good somebody else will be able to take over.

@ CKH4  I won't name him publicly since I generally discourage doing this out of the blue/with no immediate motive on CodeWalrus forums, but the person used to run a French TI website that used TI-Planet news content without citing them as the source and a few years later he also modified someone else's Periodic Table software without giving credits to the original author.
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: CKH4 on February 20, 2015, 04:09:24 am
Yeah, I've seen some bad offenders before but never had it happen to me before. Hopefully eventually people will stop stealing code but I'm fairly sure that people will never stop stealing.
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 20, 2015, 05:21:36 am
Thankfully there were only two cases of code theft in the TI/HP community in the last half a decade, so it's generally not a problem. However, it makes it understandable why someone would be reluctant about making his project open-source. Doors CS 7 is closed-source for similar reasons (although Kerm is willing to give the source to trusted people).
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: CKH4 on February 20, 2015, 07:06:31 am
I personally believe that all code should be open source because it benefits people learning but I completely understand how sometimes releasing the source could be harmful, especially if the program is the developers best work. We tend to try to protect things which we are proud of and having someone else make a crude impression butchering your work is like having your pride broken. I've found that most of the time if you ask for the source the developer will give it to you, only asking for credit if a modified version is released. It's a shame that people cause this distrust by acting untruthfully.
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 20, 2015, 07:27:49 am
I think if someone steals your code after your program was released by yourself publicly, then it's safer because you can then prove it's your work. The major problem arises when someone steals the source before your program gets known then some people might think you are the one who stole the code. >.<
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: CKH4 on February 20, 2015, 07:31:03 am
Yes indeed, I'm just glad that no one has stolen any code from me (although not much is worth stealing).
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 20, 2015, 07:34:32 am
Yeah in my case, nobody did it to me either, although in two occasions people re-uploaded my games with the readme intact, not stealing any credits, but preventing me from editing it and also getting download stats at my expense. Kerm and Bryan Thomas gotta be by far the biggest victims of code theft in the past on ticalc.org (especially Bryan Thomas with Contra 83)

Anyway we should probably get back on topic. :P We can always start a debate thread about open vs closed source and such matters, though.
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: CKH4 on February 20, 2015, 07:41:38 am
Yeah, I can imagine. They're both very high profile. Contra 83 is very impressive, it looks quite nice for being written in pure basic.
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 20, 2015, 08:15:04 am
Indeed. Many people nowadyas dislike it because now people hate any game that has sub-programs no matter if it's the highest-quality game ever. That sucks because sometimes the author has no choice to do it. It's generally even discouraged for that reason on CW to downgrade someone's work solely based on the language used, amount of files, file size and platform unless justified (eg if it's possible to make it smaller). But that hasn't happened much yet I guess :P
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: DarkestEx on February 20, 2015, 10:32:17 am
@DJ Omnimaga @CKH4

Yes, you're completly right!
Thats the main reason, why I don't want to share the code to untrusty people. And maybe later, if the game (just in the very rare case) is kindof an success, I don't want clones or thieft using my source with no credit. Also in case I implement any ad or payment stuff, I wouldn't be able to upload those modules.
But as I said, I will allow trusty people (like you, and the people I listed earlier) to access my code repo on dropbox.com.

Hope you don't hate me for that  :)

EDIT: @CKH4 you will get the source and apk too, as you said, that you want to download it and maybe do some beta testing

Yes, I will scale it, keeping the aspect ratio and filling the remaining space with background or something else.
I don't know, what to do with the levels. I implemented level loading of any size, I even included the first level in my brand new version (no random  no more),
but it's size is 10x6. What do you think? Should I make it compatible with existing levels or should I go another way?
I will use json to do level loading, so I guess I could let you decide the size of every level, by using every level's json config.
Title: Re: [ANDROID] TwoStep - The challenging puzzle game!
Post by: DarkestEx on February 20, 2015, 03:15:04 pm
So now I implemented level loading from json, made more textures (my ones are temporarily), and fixed bugs, restrucured the game, made the game capable of running on every device keeping its aspect ratio.

Cool to hear about scaling. The issue with Supersonic Ball Android is that people with a larger screen had an unfair advantagr over others on the highscores list because they had a much longer field of view. Gonna give your game a try soon :D

Thank you so much for trying. So whats failing? Is it installing or not? If it is installed, does it crash? What's your devices android version?
Would be great to know it. :)

My browser can't make the connection to your webpage. It has nothing to do with the app.

@CKH4

Oh, sorry. No problem, I guess you're having problems with my free webspace.
I uploaded to to dropbox for you.

Thanks for the Dropbox link. I have no idea why it's not working but hopefully it'll be fixed without anyone changing anything.

For some reason some people are just not able to access my site (I guess due to dns problems)
Myself and most of the people are able to access it. I will one day, buy a domain name and some webspace and then it should really work.
No 1freehosting and dot.tk anymore then.

Dot.tk has a decade-long history of sporadic uptime problems. In 2004 and 2010 their uptime was about 40%, if not less.

So it's possible that it might not be the host.

OK, my first thoughts are that it needs a walking animation but it looks good.

We will have a walking animation. :)

Yeah I agree about that. Also nice to see that the game is almost full screen now (I tried it earlier and it looks nice). I can't wait to see what you will add in the remaining white areas :P

Well, I was working on the calculator version again which is right now active, as for the app, I'm waiting for the textures from AliceIsDead.
No, I'm not planning a port for color calculators, as there's no sense to it. I don't own any color calculator, nor any rom for them. Also, I'd have no idea where to start porting it and I'd have to rewrite the whole game and redo every texture and I'd have to buy a color calculator, which makes no sense, as I don't need one. But if anybody feels like porting it to the color series, you can obtain permission from me (ask me via pm).

Ah ok I was wondering since you had disappeared. As for the color version it's fine. Maybe someone could eventually do an xLIB or ASM port of it for those calcs.

Is codewalrus closing? I read your cemetech and your new post here on omnimaga and i'm afraid, this site is going to be closed down.
Is that right?

It almost did, but Juju wanted to take over the hosting funding and stuff, so CodeWalrus will remain open under his heel and possibly donations from other users.

However I don't think I will ever come back to Omnimaga unless some criterias are met (which is unlikely) and the SAX shoutbox on Cemetech. So I'll mostly be here and perhaps to a lesser extent Cemetech forums (I never posted very much to begin with there)

I also need to cross post that topic here but I need to edit it first because I don't want people to think that I'm leaving here now (I think I might need a hiatus in a few months tho)

Ah, ok. Is it safe to use the site and post on here, or could all of this be deleted from one day to another without anyone letting us know?

It should be fine (and perhaps the best way to ensure its long term future actually. One of the reason why closing the site was initially considered is that in the last few weeks, all our newer members started disappearing one after another without really telling why, so we had no clue how to fix this). The initial announcement before Juju's change of plan would have allowed a grace period anyway so people would have still been able to post while we decide what to do with the site (in the worst case scenario it would have been read-only).

But now it doesn't really matter since he took over. So it should be safe (unless our host shut down but then we have backups anyway)

Yay update. The file is a .txt though so I'm guessing that you uploaded the wrong file.

Hmm, it does work for me.
The php page is working as a download counter aswell, and it fetches the latest version of the ressource "id".
Can you provide any more details? What does the txt show?

Lots of random characters and occasionally text contained within the game. I guess my phone still has issues with .tk domains then.

I actually don't think so.
The download I provided to you wrongfully, is hosted on my new, paid webhost with a .net domain.
Also, the file is intended to be downloaded by a pc and then flashed onto a TI-84+ or a TI-83+.
For the real android download, yes, it is still hosted on my old site.

Oh, OK. I'm not really sure then but I'll try the one on your old site.

Where is the file? One of your post says "-deleted" so I assume you removed the link. I am curious, though, since I would like to try it. As for CKH4 issue I remember I had this happen a lot in the past with Opera Presto-based browser and I think it happened in Firefox too. But it's only on a few websites that it did, usually when downloading forum attachments. I haven't gotten that issue in ages, though.

Strange it doesn't download properly, you'd expect it to be the browser's fault

I will be soon posting an update on this. But really I am sorry, but I can't do two projects in two completely different languages simultaneously.
Android <> TI-84+ are completely different programming languages and execution models.
But will first make another big update on the 84+ Version and then redo the whole codebase of this game from the gound off.
It will be so much work and this is my first Android game title, so please don't judge me for that. I collected some experience on game development for Android and can do this now way better.
I am happy to say that the textures are looking awesome and I can't wait to redo the Android version!

PS: And a big part of the work is already done: My development environment is working and cross compiling. So there will be an Android and a PC/Mac/Linux version of the game. I wrote my own gradle scripts and set up my IntelliJIdea project correctly and working, so there won't be too much problems.

I understand your feelings. If you notice, I rarely ever worked on two projects at once myself. Usually, when I resume another project, everything else gets paused. It's too annoying to work with 2 languages simultaneously >.< (even HP PPL vs BASIC) because I keep mixing the syntax up.

In any case, I wish you good luck with the rewrite. It should probably make the game better as you say (just don't fall into an endless rewrite loop lol :P). Also I'm glad there is a PC/Mac version coming out, it should open the game to a larger audience. I also can't wait to see the new textures. :D

Hmm. Maybe I have to drop the Android version.
I am not sure if I am able to write the game in java :(
If I can't it will still be published for PC, Mac and Linux and then not written in Java, but in C#.
I just can't work with that Y-Up coordinate system. Making animations, maps and textures Y-Down and then having to draw everything Y-Up is just too much for me. Has anybody experience with Java and libGdx and could help me, getting it to render Y-Down? The last version I published was using quick and dirty hacks to get the map rendered, but it is just not stable at all and crashes everytime possible.

UPDATE on this:
I am writing the whole game in C# now. I won't drop Android though. It will just be paused. Writing it in C# is extremely easy for me and is done way faster.
So you can expect 3 different platforms now :P

This will also mean, that you can see the Android version as Paused / On Hold. It will be made at some point, but maybe not by me or not in the next time.
The Windows version will be made first. Then I need to port the SFML native libs to Linux / Mac somehow. Maybe when the structure works I can copy / paste parts of the C# version into the Java one. The whole process will thereby be way slower on the Android side, but the Windows version could be done in a small amount of time :)

Glad the Android version is surviving :). That said I think it's best that you use the language you are comfortable with. If it's too unpleasant to code then you can get bored of the project much easier. Sometimes we have no choice to switch to different languages but yeah. Good luck with whatever you decide! :)
