doesnt the costs go down again?
sure you got to bid more than everyone else to get your ad shown... but since you pay for a special amount of time the prices should fall again I suppose...?

Today we got our first seroius ad:
I wonder how long it will take until we get another walrus ad ;D

Edit: Aaand our beloved "YOU ALL LOST THE GAME" is back
Edit2: for whatever reason the price for our ads changes between 0,04 and 0,03 all the time. And while it's 0,03 we got the "you lost the game" and the space game whenever it's at 0,04 ^^ They can't decide which one to show it seems ^^

This one seems to show up on Canadian and European markets, you probably missed it due to not being Canadian. It's actually the first non-walrus ad, as far as I can see, but the Monria one was probably the first one to show up in your region. There was a bunch of other ads, but they never showed up due to this THE GAME ad outbidding them.

On a side note, the ads change more frequently now, even when some authors of specific ads aren't online. Does it mean that Project Wonderful actually does some rotation, after all?
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: Yuki on October 18, 2016, 04:07:25 AM
Actually, it's all part of the whole bidding thing. With a few people fighting for the winning spot (sometimes automatically) and having their ads expire after a few hours or days, the prices change constantly and it naturally makes the ads rotate a few times a day. Project Wonderful does not rotate the ads automatically, but their bidding process does.

So my bid expired and I don't have money at the time to put it up again. Because my bid was always inflating the price, the lower quality ads mostly didn't make it through. As a result of my bid expiring (I had a monetary cap placed on it), the price dropped, and now we're getting a flood of these new ads. C'est la vie, I guess.

I should have them somewhere in my expired bids.

Speaking of which, we should have a graphic for those moments where nobody has a bid, instead of the Project Wonderful logo. Which has never happened yet since a few minutes after we've put the ad box up a month ago, as far as I know.

Ever since our members stopped being ridiculous with the ads (>_>), seems they change quite fast now.

Also the Puck one. Is it me or I see it almost everywhere? Like, to the point of culmination here? (http://frivolesque.com/archives/comic/guest-12-takeover)

EDIT: Also the Aggro-Gator ones, they're currently winning in both the US and Europe regions, I like how they translated it for Europe.

US:

Europe:

In the Europe one, they attempted to translate it in 4 languages (correct me if I'm wrong, probably French, Polish, Swedish, German), funny thing in the French translation they say "Coffre-fort pour le travail", which translate to not "safe for work" as I think it was intended, but a safe you use for work? Not the concept of being safe, but the actual object that is a safe?

The third one is indeed in Swedish, and funnily enough, it has the same translation error as you pointed out in the French one.

Wait, could someone please explain why there are random ads? Like what's the whole point of them? Do they even generate some type of profit?
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: p2 on November 18, 2016, 06:33:26 AM
well they're only ment to be clicked on... if your site sucks, would you write "stupid boring s***, watch it" on your ad? or just some "interesting" (no boobs) photo without any meaning? ;)

edit: you have to take a look at those comics :D

Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads

Yeah I noticed that. I think they find sites that look more like their style and audience and they place ads there. Also I love the Robek World ads.

Who knows? Maybe if we have more free money in the future, we could bid on some other sites like ours with ads. :P

EDIT: Something like this for an humor-related site that happens to be visited by geeks :P but that takes too much space and might be annoying <_<

Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads

its not annoying it beautiful O.O
I'm only sad its no perfect loop ;D (but that would be uper hard to do...

did you arrange al walruses by hand?  :ninja:
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on November 24, 2016, 07:39:18 PM
A perfect loop would be impossible :P

And nah I just posted the Facebook CW banner in my post above, typed /walrii multiple times in WalrusIRC then I used Camstudio to capture the result on top of a video of the size of a CW ad. I then shortened it and saved as GIF.

The worse part, though, is truly the file size. I don't think anyone wants a 500 KB ad on his site unless it's a large site in the first place.

So I checked the site again and it seems like Juju didn't put the ads in moderator approval mode. THis could explain why that one questionable ad went through. If we really set them to be approved manually, though, then the entire staff should have access, in case one staff stops bothering. <_<

Yeah I am surprised that site survives, unless Nintendo doesn't see such site as a copyright infrigment as much as a fan game that isn't of that style. Also I wonder if the first post will become as large, BBCode-wise, as the :walrii: fanart thread one day.

That ad is currently bidding at a record $0.90/day in Europe. I'm not complaining on that side.

EDIT: $0.90/day in Europe and $0.30/day in each of the other regions, for a total of $1.80/day. I think it's a new record! For the record, we only need a 30-day average of about $0.70/day for the site to be self-sustaining and pay the hosting with the ads, it's still currently $0.09, it's still pretty nice.
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: p2 on February 02, 2017, 08:58:05 AM
aaaand we're back to $0.08/day ^^
but even if its only a single spike wach month, it still helps us reducing the hosting cost and I'm really grateful to all the users that help us with the hosting by placing their ads. Even if it's just a bit, it still helps us :)

I wish they supported cross-domain ads so we don't need multiple ones. For example, we don't have ads on the TIMGUL archives. By the way you should make TIMGUL ads for the few traffic we get there with the same default ad.

Well, seems it works on a subdomain, as far as I tested. For TIMGUL, for the few traffic it have, it may or may not be worth it.

Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on February 20, 2017, 08:43:09 PM
A script could work actually, but who would run it? Also for mobile issues the best would be if it was possible to set the forums to turn images as URLs by default on mobile depending of the user's settings, with some quick-to-reach options.
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: p2 on February 20, 2017, 09:08:49 PM
yeah, an exact copy of the current mobile site but with all images greyed out, only loading them once you click on them... that might actually work ^.^
--> ToDo List ;)

as for script hosting, I can't imagine this would take too many resources... I dont think it'd be a problem to host it on CodeW servers :)
only need someone to write it... ::)

I said opera mini, that is yet another browser which does some server-side proxying where the proxy alredy reduces the data sent to the phone ;)
e.g. you send your screen res to the proxy and it filters out all the unneeded css definitions of responsive designs
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads

Yeah spoilers are a no-go, and grayed-out images neither because you would sitll be loading the grayed-out copy in the process.

As for Opera Mini I didn't know it was still a thing. The last time I tried it on iOS it had terrible compatibility (even more than the default browser)

Yeah, that contract management system guy have a lot of money to spend on ads, it seems...

Well, again, the most popular sites on Project Wonderful gets upwards of $10/day, Oglaf and Omegle (and probably Homestuck too before the story ended and/or when not on a hiatus) regularly hitting the $100, it's probably one of those who can afford that.
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads

I managed to get ad space on SMWCentral for a while in some regions. Although their bids are usually around $1.50, I sometimes got lucky and my much lower bid (I think $0.10 in Europe?) won for a bit.

Yeah true. On Facebook you can get through $25 of advertising in just one day if you want decent exposure. On TV I bet it costs $1000 per commercial airing and don't get me started on the Super Bowl
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: semiprocoder on March 17, 2017, 01:30:42 AM
Super bowl commercials are WAY overrated due to their high cost. I watched a youtube video explaining the effectiveness of youtube ads vs superbowl ads from some random tech youtuber or something. Yeah not the greatest source but the youtuber made some really good points, such as the fact that youtube ads are targeted.
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on March 17, 2017, 07:36:14 AM
I bet getting advertising on Youtube is very expensive too >.<. I kinda prefer monetizing my videos and hoping one day I reach the $100 payment thresold. I will earn more this way than spending $25 a week to increase my music sales by $5 a month, not to mention with FB/Youtube ads it's difficult to find the good audience (for example, would you be better off advertising in Germany, UK, etc?)

I'm not surprised actually. Some people will advertise anywhere on project wonderful. IMHO I prefer advertising on sites with potential target audience, though, for maximum traffic, but those sites are usually rare. Also, some site puts their ads somewhere hard to see.

Not quite. It's showing a scantily clad woman and advertising a video game. I have a screenie if you want to see it.

Here's the NSFW image. I thought I'd show it

it's that supermassive black hole thingy again that has been constantly poking us all for months now <_<
Since we're now oficially getting users complaining about it, I think we should finally act and take that one offline <_<

Yeah, it's the same one that bids on the site since months now, I don't deem it pr0nographic much, and if it was, it'd been taken down by Project Wonderful for breach of terms of service since a while as we don't allow more than SFW-rated ads.

I would say we should listen to our users @Juju . IMHO, the ad is not so bad, but if we get one more complain then we should take it down.

Also welcome to the forums @Mccook . I agree about some of the ads, plus the content is sometimes somewhat relevant to our site or interests.

The silver walrii is darker than normal, as I needed a way to distinguish between them.
Because the normal :walrii: is pretty light (relatively), it gets inverted to a darker color, making it appear like the one in my sig.

The site it links to is completely okay too, you should definitely click on it. As far as I know. I like the concept of that comic, it's pretty much watercolor paintings. And they seem to rotate between two ads anyway, the later one is even more appropriate.

But yeah, we're not taking it down because we don't really find it inappropriate, even if anyone complain.

Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 18, 2017, 09:52:20 PM
This reminds me, if we wanted to I think we could actually run two (smaller) ad boxes and maybe even a third one at the bottom of the page. This site, for example, has the small version of the DJ Omnimaga Music banner right next to Supermassive Black Hole side by side as of this afternoon https://www.wow-mania.com/forum/ . I dunno if it's against their rules, though, but if on mobile it looks fine (as in, no word wrap causing the banners to appear on top of each others) then that could be a way to possibly give more room for ads. It could reduce the maximum bids, though.

I think revenues from Project Wonderful ads are higher overall than Google Adsense. I dunno how long you have to wait before you can withdraw revenues but I think it's once they reach $5, versus $100 on Google. Also, CW is whitelisted on Adblock Plus so people see the banner on CW even with Adblock Plus enabled (it's hidden with uBlock, though)
Title: Re: CodeWalrus Ads
Post by: Yuki on July 18, 2017, 10:20:51 PM
Ah yeah, just checked, there's a minimum of $10 you have to withdraw. Not hard to make compared to AdSense. And you can register up to 5 different ad boxes per site you can individually bid on.

Bosaiknet hahaha! And 60% uptime...
So is bosaiknet a takeover bid of codewalr.us ?
It's a gaming server which @CVSoft is co-admin of. They play Unreal Tournament 2002, 2005 and Overwatch 2.
