Title: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Vijfhoek on December 06, 2014, 11:15:02 PM
This is something I've actually been curious about: How many people here play instruments, and if they do, which?

I myself have been playing guitar for a year or three, after playing the piano for like 7 years off and on from when I was a kid.

I'd love to pick up piano playing again, but I don't like having to play downstairs, maybe annoying the neighbours and having to annoy the rest of the family with my playing, and good keyboards are so incredibly expensive (so are guitars, btw, but I lucked out and managed to get a Jackson Kelly KE-3 (about €700 new) for €180 second-hand :D).

And how about you?

Same here, I took piano courses for quite a few years (I started at 10), played recorder, drums and saxophone at school and then started playing some guitar when I found one in the attic. I then bought an electric guitar.

I know that juju sometimes play guitar and Matref a lot, but I was curious about others. I myself don't play any instrument except some keyboard, but one day I would like to attempt guitar.

Lol Keoni.

/me plays the keyboard and mouse

More seriously though, I'd love to learn guitar, been looking at a Fender Standard Telecaster in left-handed configuration for a while. Hopefully I can get it for christmas + my birthday. :)

Is it some sort of pedal but in software form? IIRC juju told me that such software exists but I don't know if it produces realistic distorted guitar sounds

List incoming!

Piano, Percussion (Snare Drum, Timpani, Marimba, Xylo, Vibes, Bells, Aux. Percussion), and Euphonium (started this school year).

I think it's an actual guitar. But yeah from the few software I tried, GarageBand is kind of good at this, followed by Guitarix.

Also juju the issue about Garageband is that it's Mac-only x.x

Exactly. Although people into music production often have a Mac. But what's nice with open source software is that you can build your own pedal yourself.

Fender guitars are actually pretty inexpensive if you take the made in mexico models, and their quality improved a lot lately as far as I understand. Of course the ones that are made in japan or even the US are still better but to begin with the mexican ones are really good guitars. And hey, it's a retro guitar ! :D (actually it's the ancestor of the Stratocaster)

Aaah ok, are they electric though? I wouldn't mind starting on a classic or accoustic guitar, but I am not rich so if I plan to do rock it would be best to get something that will serve me for much longer.

Guitar is happiness. 7-strings is love. 8-strings is life.

Okay really, I took piano courses for 4/5 years (I keep forgetting), guitar courses for 5 years (this year's the 6th but I'm not taking courses) and I played drums alone so much that I became kind of good at it (I like to think so).

Lol Vijfhoek at the iphone thing. XD I actually think the same.

Nice set of instruments too matref, you could actually make songs by yourself. :P
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on December 09, 2014, 02:30:22 AM
That would be cool actually. Although I think matref is more into harder stuff, maybe he could try to do a guitar cover of one of my songs using multiple tracks.

Oh I meant in terms of metal only. He tends to be more into the growling stuff in general and less the power metal genre. Since he's not much into my music he might not be interested as much to cover it (although Quest for the Legendary Axe might be a good candidate)
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: matrefeytontias on December 13, 2014, 01:19:32 PM
What are you guys saying, I love power metal. Some time ago, I'd have said that I didn't like songs with growl in them, but that's not really true anymore.

Eiyeron silly, 12-strings guitar are 6-strings guitar where each string is doubled by another string of the same note at an higher octave :P only guitars from 7 to 9 strings have extra strings that go towards low notes (9-strings guitars are actually one step and a half lower than standard 4-strings basses !)

Also yeah, I keep saying to myself that I must cover Quest for the Legendary Axe :P

Street: I do record myself, as you already know. There are two problems though, one being that I have nothing to record drums (they are at my parents' home anyway, I live away from there b/c studies), and the other problem is that I'm just too bad at composing music. It's too bad, because I really want to create stuff, seeing that I can pretty much play it.

Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?

I should probably cover some songs from AKB0048.

I do like Sabaton, I LOVE Stratovarius, I remember hearing something from Sonata Arctica but I don't know Twilight Force.

Also that's official ; next music from me will be Quest for the Legendary Axe, instruments version :P

I wonder if playing any decent music would be doable with just 1 string? :P (eg let's say you're out of money, absolutely wants to play guitar but you broke all but one of your strings.

It's doable, apparently. But no chords or anything.

Well I know 2-string guitar exists, and people attempted playing with 1-string ones.

It's kind of hard to say what subgenres I really like. I have been a lot into Dream Theater lately, like a serious lot, but I also like artists like Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden (and Bruce's solo career), Firewind, Sabaton, etc... I just don't like metal/mathcore, djent and most nu-metal (Linkin' Park and Slipknot, but I do like SOAD).
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on December 21, 2014, 03:49:49 AM
Aah ok I was unsure if you were more into the power/heavy side of metal, death/black or more progressive/slower stuff. I'm not as much into progressive because it's hard to headbang to and I like some faster songs sometimes. Maiden is one of my favorite bands, as well as Sabaton, Twilight Force, Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica. But I am not very familiar with melodic death metal artists yet although I like that genre.

EDIT: I finally watched the video above and I am impressed by how it turned out. I'm not a big fan of this type of metal, but I am surprised it came out well despite not using much strings. :P

Now that you mention it I kinda agree lol. I also noticed that some power metal or death metal signers look more like popular MC/DJs that mix dance music in big clubs. <.< In power metal case, it's mostly the very new and obscure bands, though.

Piano is harder than it sounds actually. It requires lots of practice in order to continue playing well. Otherwise after a few years you tend to lose it.

Yeah I think it would, especially that my songs are electronic for the most part. It isn't even guaranteed that TotKotM material, for example, is even playable on a real guitar. Some adjusting might be required. Not to mention if those songs ever had lyrics, they would need to be pitched down in some cases

Indeed, due to the lag lol. Maybe it could work with slower songs, though, or if we know the users have a good internet connection. :P

The best way really, though, would be like what some MaxCoderz members wanted to do in 2005: One band member records his part, then send the sound files to the others. Then another band member records his instruments on top of the other track and so on, until every track is recorded. However this process can take quite a while.

Kidding aside i started playing guitar too indeed, it's pretty cool. And I need a strat, did I say that yet?

Awesome. :D If you can access a computer with a line-in you should post some recordings of how it sounds like :)

I'M also checking guitar prices at various stores. They say somewhere to avoid spending under $100 on a guitar if you are starting up but want to get serious about it and higher is much better for sound, but not necessary if you are on a tight budget. However, I am in Canada and brick and mortar stores here usually charges much more for their stuff, so I would say $200. There are also stores selling used musical instruments nearby.

As for department stores and big boxes this is an example of how they would charge: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/category/guitars/29338.aspx?path=2e026388340bcbe9f4c3a35ef12eabb5en01

I saw this: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/squier-fender-squier-bullet-stratocaster-electric-guitar-black-310005506/10140097.aspx?path=bbf055c3f10d3ae7e23cf5fbb44f852den02

Not sure if it's cheaper than specialized stores, becuase I know for specialized stores (eg Sony store) they usually charges three times more money for the exact same electronic, so maybe it's the same with guitars? I'll need to shop if I ever get serious about learning guitar (most likely not this year) x.x

That is cool. I wonder if the sound is realistic like with the real stuff?

Also fun fact: You can generate sound from your electric guitar (or maybe it's the amp?) using a TI-83+ calculator. O.O

It can be an alternative to the AM radio trick or having to buy an adapter to fit speakers/headphones inside the I/O port.

It's really good quality.

Also I think it's the guitar itself. The pickups might be sensitive to low level logic. I guess it depends on the pickup type too.

Well, actually the pickups translate the vibrations of the strings into signals which are then processed by the amp to create sound.

No, it doesn't. If you don't set anything on the amp it just outputs the vibrations on the input.

I should load some Music 2000 samples in my keyboard (if I figure out how to)

No Skrillex, a macbook is not an instrument.

Also yeah that would be possible, isn't there some guy who loaded all the samples in FL Studio?

Also I restarting playing some piano. Or tried to. I want to play some music from Touhou. :P

Yeah I remember the topic on TIMGUL a few years ago. I don't think he ever published them, though (not that he would be able to, anyway, since Music 2000 license prevents you from redistributing them for use in other music softwares (it's up to the music maker to rip them himself). But again maybe it was just if you were planning to make your own software that it wasn't allowed.

I personally can't stand any music that has no chord progression nor any pitch variation >.< (eg most brutal death metal). There are also some melodies that don't appeal to me as much. For me the melody is a big priority when I listen to a song and if it's good enough then sometimes the song genre doesn't even matter (this is why, for example, I like one Madonna song)

So I've been working on learning this part on guitar:

It's the intro solo of Dream Theater - The Count of Tuscany ((https://img.ourl.ca/spotify-1.png) (http://open.spotify.com/track/2GV41X8idjOWKpKwUKIDJ6) (https://img.ourl.ca/youtube-1.png) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT8dNkD-Byc)), about 30 seconds in.

It's actually going pretty well, and I'm actively noticing improvement :D

Most electric guitars go up to 22 (that's the minimum), while some can go up to 33. I have a 22-frets 6-strings and a 27-frets 7-strings.

Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Yuki on January 28, 2015, 03:06:27 AM
Most standard guitars have 21 frets, more specialized and fancy guitars have more. Mine has 21, which is pretty much the minimum standard. AFAIK, it's not something you should look for unless you really need it. Read, you're the guitarist of a band like Metallica, you're a minimum experienced, enough to own several guitars and you want to do some pretty wicked riffs in the high octaves. (For the record, the ukulele I have here have 12 frets and 4 strings, but they're made to be fairly small.)
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on January 28, 2015, 03:34:05 AM
If you don't have enough octaves available, can you use your ampli or a pedal to adjust the sound to move one octave range up/down?
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Vijfhoek on January 28, 2015, 06:52:13 AM
It is possible with a pedal, but it doesn't sound that great. That Dream Theater song goes up into the 23s by the way.

I'd suggest going with 24 frets.
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on January 28, 2015, 05:34:18 PM
Ok I see. Thanks for the tips. I hope my price range won't prevent me from going above 23 frets, although I guess I can always go to the pawn shop nearby.

My advice: Get a used one.

I got a Jackson Kelly KE3 (24 frets) for €180 used (it retailed for about €700) in great state. I just had to clean it and replace the strings. Only thing that's wrong with it is that the tremolo is unstable, but I never use it anyway.
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: matrefeytontias on January 28, 2015, 07:12:20 PM
You mean vibrato right ? The vibrato is the bar on the right and tremolo is an effect that makes your sound sound choppy.

For some reason, things like Floyd Roses are often called tremolos, or trems. I'm not sure why, because indeed "tremolo" is a whole other effect....

My only worry is that since the local pawn shop is mostly specialized into music instruments, I fear that they might charge much more than an actual new guitar or at least very close. Maybe I am wrong, though, but over here, most specialized stores are overpriced and in that pawn shop case, even if they were not specialized in music instruments, I noticed that most of their used games are expensive. For example, E.T for the Atari 2600 is $7.95 and they charge $10 for crappy N64 sports games.

That said,  another music store opened on the other side of the street so maybe they are being more careful with their prices now. I also got two other options in the old part of my city, but I think one only sells pianos, sax and such instruments.

Ideally I would like a guitar in good condition too, as in everything is working right and it doesn't look like it came out of a flooded basement.

It's still called a tremolo bar, though.
Also DJ the thing that really makes a thing like Marktplaats work is that NL is quite small, so you can drive almost everywhere and back within one day :P

Also, I found the biggest issue so far with my acoustic: The string tension is way too low x.x If I play loud, I get tons of buzzing, which sucks :( Luckily I'm not keeping this one. Found a good deal on a Squier Affinity starter set, consisting of guitar, bag, strap, and frontman10G amp for 200 bucks. I think I can afford this much :P

Over here we have Kijiji which is extremely popular. It's a classified site and some sellers might deliver the item to you. The problem, though, is that Kijiji is now overrun by scams.

Regarding your guitar problems, is it a defect or is it how that particular model is made?
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: aetios on February 03, 2015, 06:59:45 AM
I think the strings I bought are too low tension and thus vibrate too much, they hit the fretboard which causes buzzing. It's not a defect, you could maybe call it a bug.
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?

Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?

If the strings are too low tension, doesn't it mean they are loose? Maybe I am missing something because I speak French (in French, tension, when it comes to strings/cords/ropes can refer to how loose it is). If that's the case, then wouldn't tightening them up fix the issue?

I'll have much to learn about guitar when I get one lol. Although there are probably things I can figure out from experimenting like getting the best sound. Ideally I would prefer avoiding having to take lessons to keep costs to a minimum. With internet I am betting I can get help there.
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?

I don't have any lessons either, and my playing is coming along fairly nicely. Don't think it won't take time though!

Most important thing to keep in mind: try keeping your wrist straight at all times. Most important thing to avoid injuries.
Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 04, 2015, 05:16:12 PM
Yeah getting help in real time would definitively speed things up for some things. Although I guess Google hangouts could sometimes do the job :P. But yeah I heard that to get a song played right you need to practice for a long time and every day. As for the wrist thing is it because of risks of getting cut by the strings or something or more long term injuries caused by bad posture?

Also stupidly crazy idea I had: Would using hair as strings work? O.O

It might, if you interweave enough of them so they survive the fairly high tension. It won't work on electric guitars though, as the pick-ups use magnetic fields to pick up the vibrations, so the strings have to be made of some metal.

Title: Re: What instruments do you play/have you played?
Post by: Vijfhoek on February 08, 2015, 01:03:02 PM
A bass kind of is the glue between the drums and the guitar, and it's an octave lower than a normal guitar, so yes, it is needed. Yes, you can pitch-shift a guitar down an octave, but that honestly sounds like crap.

I guess this is due to additional noises (pick sounds, the sound of your hand moving over the strings) being lowered an octave too, but also some dynamics of a bass being different (think of palm mutes, the act of putting the side of your picking hands to mute the strings a bit. Think of the chugging sound that you can hear in the rhythm guitar tracks of metal songs).

(I also wish the editing area of Tapatalk was bigger. I wonder what that little plus does. Hey, it makes it bigger, yay :D)

I have played the bass for a gig once, but there are some things that are tougher than you'd expect. For one thing the frets on a bass are much bigger, making playing on the lower few frets really stretchy. Also, playing without a pick sounds so much better on a bass than with a pick. Another thing that's tough is keeping other strings from vibrating when playing one. This also happens on a guitar, but much less so.

Many bassists only use their index, middle and pinky fingers when playing on the lower strings. One of the song I thought I'd be playing (turned out I was practising one song too much) didn't allow that though.

It went like this

Darn I really need to get more used to reading guitar tabs. I watched videos about guitar and stuff before but I forget how stuff is called easily lol, even string numbers. Also are guitar picks really necessary when playing electric guitar with an amp and distortion? I always worried it would wear down strings faster or that I would keep losing my picks for whatever reason. :P

Picks aren't required but it makes playing individual notes much much easier. It doesn't really wear the strings more than playing with your hands. Also, my guitar arrived :D

You could rotate it in GIMP or something. Anyway, here is my guitar:

For reference, here's the acoustic guitar I played on before I got my electric guitar (I hate it now):

EDIT: Because why not, this is the piano I played on before I stopped doing that:

EDIT2: Apparently I didn't say this, but nice, aeTIos :D

We have a grand piano from like 1920, i don't have any pictures of it and it's currently being restorated.
I can't play it though since i'm not really interested in learning to play an instrument

It looked nice but looking nice and being nice aren't always the same.

Edit.
They aren't very rare and its been painted at least once, I read that they were only painted black. Cool piano anyway.

It's the Jackson Kelly KE3, which is based on the Fender Explorer. Marty Friedman (who was in Megadeth for a while) is known for playing on Kellys.

Hi... I play a little guitar. I borrow a cheap Yamaha from my father to practice on, and my brother has an even cheaper BGuitars electric guitar that I can use - but it lacks any pedal, they're too expensive. I'm able to play, like, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star atm  :P

I have messed around with computer generated music using LMMS and a Theramin app which works real well, theramins are cool. My brother plays some keyboard, violin, nose flute, and built a small synth board he makes weird noises with sometimes.

I would probably be tempted to put paint stripper on the piano if I got one like this then varnish the hell out of it so that it can recover its wood finish. But again, we never know in which condition the piano was before it was painted, so it could be a risky move resulting in having to paint it again (although I guess painting it black would still give a good result).

Yeah I heard that guitar requires regular practice in order to be good, like everyday. Also I wonder if it's true that if you start learning guitar too late (eg at 29 years old) then you stand no chance at ever being good? I know that learning is harder when we are older but I was curious if it was true for guitar.

I know right. I went back to playing some piano this weekend at my grandparents, I probably should learn a complete song by Christmas. I have my MIDI piano and my guitars around, but I almost never play them other than messing with music software once in a while (real instruments are pretty useful for me for coming up with a melody before transcribing it into software).

Are you kinda good at piano by the way? And does your grandparent piano have an audio out or is it one of those old pianos? I always prefered old pianos for playing, but electronic ones can be handy for recording stuff.

I learnt piano and keyboard when I was young but I'm pretty bad at it.
Then I decided I felt better with string instruments, so I learnt by myself guitar, bass guitar and fiddle.  It's rather raw, but here is what I did with it (some 10 years ago, I'd like to go back to those instruments and create something more substantial with them):

Started with Cornet, moved down to Baritone Horn, played Valve Trombone for my high school's jazz band, and then switched to Trumpet a year or so ago. Which is hell on my braces, but eh.
I also occasionally play keyboard, though I'm absolute garbage at it ^u^

I never heard of the bassoon, at least not in English. I'll Google it for more info. It could be something I played as kid but forgot. I wonder if playing drums is hard? I once tried in elementary school when a musician brought in a full drum kit (it was awesome) but I mean playing complex songs gotta be something else

I think that a calculator could count as an instrument. It can produce sound and you can make music with sound (providing you can sequence it based on your liking or compose in real-time).

Also in QUebec City two summers ago, I went to some fair with Juju near the harbor where sellers showcased mostly products that they made by hand or created themselves. One of them had wooden instruments. You can make your own instruments too, you know?

I am learning guitar. My guitar is actually my father's, a 2007 Yamaha acoustic; he wanted to learn to play guitar but his fingers were short and hands soft  :D I also can use an electric, it's my younger brother's and he thought it looked fun so bought it, but it's a "boutique guitar", a BGuitars Viper GE93. It's cheap and doesn't sound very good but is electric so I can practice on it anyways. I should buy a guitar sometime though...
