Yeah, I think I will also do a RPG, but it would be a bit different. There should be an RPG themed contest!
Such contest would probably not be now, though, since we had a different idea in mind for our first contest. :P
Well, yeah.
BTW, when can we expect the long awaited contest?
I don't know yet. I was planning to start it this month if possible, because during Summer Cemetech always have a contest and if Omni has one too, it is usually during Summer as well. THe issue though is that I had the easter rush at my workplace and want to finish First Fantasy soon, so I doubt the contest would start immediately. The only hint I can give right now is that we had some rather unlikely ideas for the first contest. :P
Hmmm.... Its probably bout water bottles.
Well anyways the newer the better!
You'll see I guess. But now that I remember, one reason why we didn't announce it yet was because it was too close to April Fools day so we were worried that people would find the idea so weird that they would think it's an April Fools prank :P
True true. I think I would have believed it anyways. :P

i guess that's why CW does it in spring?
I like how this thread has just turned into a chat thread. Not that I'm helping of course :P
Thats the way it is around here :P
I think the music thread went to games a while back. And Pi day was about CPUs.
You have to talk about something when Pi day is over right? :P
I guess, just maybe not in that topic.
There we have the contest talk separate, no longer hijacking the other thread. :P
Some contest talk went on behind the scenes so far. Hopefully it can be launched soon.
Anyone here think they will have time to allocate a few days in the next month or so to work on a little something? (By little I mean smaller than Starcraft II :P)
I might be avaialable depending on the difficulty of the project.
I suppose I could try work on something, but I'd only have 1-2 hours a day
i've got enough time :P (and if not, i'll just skip some homework (not too much though))
I guess it shouldn't take too long, although the issue is planning, which might take longer due to having to find an idea :P
As long as I don't have to code anything other than TI BASIC I can do it. I only have 5 days in the week available though.
Yeah it would be cool if the contest is for multy platform :P
This brings a problem : how could one judge a TI-CSE basic game with a Prizm C game?
Depends on the contest probably

It depends what the contest grading is. Some contests scoring are mostly based on the game content than the code.
You coud have different sections for each calc.
But then you'd have multiple winners right?
True, true.

YEah that's the problem, in addition to contest funding. Eventually we would like to do a larger contest and the currently planned one is a lower scale contest focused on originality rather than programming skills, so that every platform can participate (except of course TI-80 BASIC or stuff that is just so slow). And the current contest happens to only have 1 prize and last shorter. Only a small sum is allocated to this particular contest, so splitting the prize in 4 categories or the like would not give much. :P
When can we expect the contest btw?
Before First Fantasy 8 for sure :P
More seriously I was analyzing my free time in the next two months to ensure I can help running it. But overall it's pretty decided how it will be, except the judging process.
Contest has been postponed due to uncertain health. Not sure if I have anything wrong but I need extra rest since the last week or so, which cuts my free time down considerably.
Possible contest start dates will now have to fit within one of the following ranges
April 30th to May 6th (deadline would be from May 31st to June 6th)
June 19th to July 2nd (deadline would be from July 19th to August 1st)
July 23rd to 29th (deadline would be from August 23rd to 29th)
Because the contest lasts 1 month and with such start dates, I would be in vacation from work when the deadline arrives. The sooner the better, though, because I often go out during Summer.
April 30th to May 6th is the one! DJ, hope your health is fine!
Starting it in the first week of May sounds good. Although I can always help.
Yeah i agree on the first week of may. I have a 2-week break from school just after that and i don't think my parents were panning on going somewhere so i'll have enough free time :)
Read: Cumred wants to win by default
Yes that too. %Tryhard
So what platforms are then supported, and what programming languages?
I'd love to participate, but I can only program Axe for the TI-83+ and TI-84+ and PC games.

Every platform I own is supported (basically, this excludes iOS, Mac OS, Linux and older HP calcs). TI-BASIC might pose a challenge for this particular contest, though.
Why?
Please no...
Hybrid BASIC?
No! Please Axe and Basic! O.O
People can always learn the other language, but I don't like being forced to use TI-BASIC when not necessary.
I think there should be either a file size limit and/or a closer time limit (less time) instead.
The game itself should be judged, not the language.

No,DJ said that TI BASIC entries woud be hard for the theme. I know that every format that DJ has is supported.
Oh I understood that the use of Basic is what is going to make this contest hard.
This is why people should try to read carefully before replying to posts. :P (although I forgive you since none of us speak English as native language.)
Basically, what I meant is that this contest allows every single language and about 30 platforms. It's just that people who use pure TI-83+ BASIC will probably have an harder time competing, due to nature of the contest theme. And the platforms that can participate are the following:
Windows (must be Windows 7 compatible)
Android
Web-based (although of course the user would need to send the file since the contest would not allow sharing entries before the end)
TI-81/82/+/Stats/83/+/84+/SE/CSE/85/86/89/92/Nspire
Casio FX-7000G/9750GII/9860G/fx-CG10/20/CP400
HP 39gII/Prime
The TI-84+CE is a possibility if I get one before the contest ends. Basically I need the platform to run entries :P.
Also another possibility is if I get more free time than expected this month, then I could launch the contest earlier than now planned, but judging would not start until my work vacations begin.

That reminds me, I have to write down the contest rules and disclaimers in the staff board before I can even think about launching it in 2 weeks. >.< While I got the basic idea done, I also need to write the legal part so that the contest remains legal for the most part. :P
I might just exclude Quebec from participating to make it easier (Quebec contest rules are a major PITA to deal with), seeing as we only have two members living there including myself and they can't participate due to being staff anyway. There was also another country with insane contest/gambling restrictions but I forgot which one.
Augh, such contests are just created to push people to improve their programing skills, how could they be considerated as belonging to gambling?

Quebec's contest restrictions is because Qc government runs the only lottery company in the province and they don't want to lose their monopoly. They see most contest attempts as gambling and competition to their monopoly.
Paranoia much? also sound a bit corrupt too...
Indeed. If someone from Quebec wins our $25 prize then I owe the government $2.50 in taxes on the prize. Also to allow quebec contestants to win a prize my contest must have a french version of the rules available.
The "Régie des Alcools et des Jeux" (Alcohol and Gambling Authority/Minister) really need to change their rules at one point.

Rules respecting publicity contests
An Act respecting lotteries, publicity contests and amusement machines
(chapter L-6, s. 20)
1. These Rules do not apply to publicity contests where the total value of the prizes offered does not exceed $2,000, with the exception of sections 5 and 6 that apply to all publicity contests in which the total value of the prizes exceeds $100.

AN ACT RESPECTING LOTTERIES, PUBLICITY CONTESTS AND AMUSEMENT MACHINES
CHAPTER I
DEFINITIONS
1. In this Act, and in the regulations and rules hereunder, unless the context indicates otherwise,
[...]
(b) "publicity contest" means a contest, a lottery scheme, a game, a plan or an operation which results in the awarding of a prize, carried on for the object of promoting the commercial interests of the person for whom it is carried on;
[...]
58. A person for whom a publicity contest is carried on in which the total value of the prizes offered exceeds $100 must pay to the board, at the same time as he sends the form provided for in section 59, the following duties:
(a) 10% of the value of a prize offered to contestants from Québec exclusively;
(b) 3% of the value of a prize offered to a group of contestants from Canada exclusively, when that group includes contestants from Québec;
(c) 0.5% of the value of a prize offered to any other group of contestants including contestants from Québec.
1978, c. 36, s. 58.
Source:
http://www2.publicationsduquebec.gouv.qc.ca/dynamicSearch/telecharge.php?type=2&file=/L_6/L6_A.htmlSo yeah, the law only seems to apply to publicity contests where the total value of the prize exceeds $100. CodeWalrus is not a company and does not pursue any commercial interest (as far as I know, well, the contest does not aim to promote whatever we would eventually want to sell) and the prize is below $100. I'm no lawyer, but you're welcome.
Oh right, I thought there was no minimum. I knew that above a certain amount the restrictions were higher, though. As for commercial interests, CW used to sell music, and while it's now available for free, it's still possible to pay for it in the same fashion as Humble Bundle, not to mention the possibility of CW merch in the future, so maybe that could be a gray area.
I guess this means that if we ever hold a bigger contest, we will just make the total prize value $100 (or $99.99?) CAD max :P
At least redisdents of Quebec will now be able to participate, right?
That's pretty cool if we could allow Canadians to participate! Nice finding Juju.

Yup. Very big contests are the only ones that could pose problems.
Well that won't be a problem for now :)
So the contest should normally start on April 28th or 29th and the deadline will be May 31st. Winners will be determined via a survey and judges. Judges have yet to be determined and positions will be offered near the end, but contest participants will obviously not be able to judge. CodeWalrus staff and part-time maintenance staff will not be allowed to participate, for impartiality reasons, although they will be allowed to judge if they desire. The judging results will be posted once voting is over.
Your entry will have to be compatible with at least one of the following platforms:
Windows 7
Android
Chrome/Firefox/Opera/Safari/IE11 (if you make a web-based entry)
TI-81/82/+/Stats/83/Premium/+/84+/SE/CSE/CE/85/86/89/92/Nspire
Casio FX-7000G/9750GII/9860G/fx-CG10/20/CP400
HP 39gII/Prime
The submission of a TI-83 Premium CE/TI-84 Plus CE entry that isn't pure TI-BASIC could result into contest judging delays, as I do not own the calculator yet.
Contestants will be required to make a topic about their project on the CodeWalrus forums. Cross-posting is allowed of course.
Since many CodeWalrus members are under 18, the prize will be digital and in the form of a Steam, iTunes or Amazon gift card. Only entries that were started after April 29th will be eligible, although re-using past code or graphics is fine. Team projects will be allowed, but then the prize would be split up between the entry authors (eg if there are three, then each winner would receive a $10 gift card instead of one person receiving a $30 gift card). We will not be held responsible about any issue that might occur between authors of team projects if such project win.
Entries will be judged mainly on creativity, with a few bonus points for originality, gameplay and if the file size/speed/install process is reasonable for the type of game/platform/language used. This is not a programming skills competition, but rather a creativity one.
The contest theme will be made public on April 28th or 29th. Once it's out, feel free to share with your friends and other people who might be interested in a little game making challenge.
Awesome! Can't wait :D

%exitement%
I might create a sub-forum, but it doesn't guarantee that the topics in it will always remain there (eg if a very good program comes out)
Also, three other contest rules: Participants will be forced to include either a .txt readme explaining the controls (and how to play if needed) of their game or at least include the controls in the first post of their CodeWalrus project topic. This includes TI-Nspire entries.
Another rule is that all entries will be made publicly available when voting starts. Also people will not be able to release their entry until voting starts.

Nope, since it would give them an unfair advantage.

For this contest there is only one winner and one prize, since it's more like a mini-contest (or something between mini and large at least).

Yup I wasn't going to make a tool thanks though. Are you going to give an entry because you are judging them right?
Nah I cannot participate, same for anyone that has access to the staff sub-forum. I might still do a game using the same theme, but it won't be a contest entry.
