I was bored at school and I did this.
http://juju.codewalr.us/membermap
This thing maps the location of every CodeWalrus member on a fancy globe.
FAQ
Q: How precise is it?
A: It gets your location from your last visited IP, it's as precise as the GeoIP database is, as in, good chances your location is in your country's capital or big town even though you live far from it. (They detect proxies though and they likely won't appear.) Additionally, the latitudes and longitudes are rounded to the nearest degree. If you care, it should be enough to give you some anonymity.
Q: Why the different lengths of those bars?
A: The more people lives at this particular latitude and longitude (rounded to the nearest degree), the higher is the bar. Again, if it was about the post count, it would blow your anonymity away (I wonder who would be that huge as hell orange bar, eh DJ?)
Q: It doesn't work
A: Blame those guys (https://github.com/dataarts/webgl-globe), can't help you there, mate. I have no plan to make it work on your device either yet, it's just a fun experiment.
Q: It's pretty cool!
A: Thanks!
Q: It needs more walruses
A: Yes, of course.
Can we opt out and in? Some people might not want their location disclosed. Maybe an option to just show which country the person is from?
That's pretty cool :)
I didn't realize several CW members live near me O.O

The information is available anyways. It's just found from the last logged in IP.

Pretty much what I said, there's not enough data shown to identify a person in particular and where they are exactly. If it really poses a problem to someone, please contact me. But those who care should use a proxy or Tor anyway.

True but that info is only visible to staff unless they join IRC. :P
Anyway nice walrinitiative, I'm definitively curious about our demographics and how they compare with the other calculator sites.
EDIT: By the way your map seems a bit innacurate, as it puts me somewhere near Toronto or something it seems O.O (I'm around Quebec City). Also, I think you shouldn't include people with 0 posts and perhaps even under 5 posts, else that isn't really representative of our userbase. Most 0 post users are spambots who failed to post, judging from their account info, and most 5 post users are people who had no interest to stick around to begin with. (eg newbies asking questions)
You should add a herd of walriis somewhere on greenland :3=
Actually, maybe there could be a 2D version of this map where bars are replaced with walruses, with the teal walruses being used in the north and the pink ones in the south :P
Also a 2D mode would be easier to browser if we want an instant indication of where our users are.

I still can't see the map just a black screen and some text around :(
MAy you provide a screenshot so I know how it should look like? :) Thx
I should probably look at what's wrong soon.
EDIT: Fixed.
Who owned is-a-brony.com btw? I forgot. In any case, if it was you, then it makes sense to combine your domain names and switch to sub-domain names considering CW and juju2143.ca have unlimited sub-domains, especially considering you used to have troubles paying your rent and internet bills <_<
Anyway glad the map is fixed. I'll sticky this topic.
Juju, I suggest inverting the color of the globe. It's currently very misleading, as the black zones are actually land.
yeah I scrolled around th whole globe 3 or 4 times efore I realized there was very little water xD
But once you understand it the map actually looks pretty cool ;D
Lol. When i first looked at it i was like "what planet is this" but then i released that what i thought was land was actually ocean. xD
Just make all land white and water blue, just like :walrii: natural habitat. :P
Huh, looks like there's a small concentration of members with me here in Miami. :)
I'd actually prefer staying with different tones of grey as it looks really nice ;D
It seems like most of our American members are concentrated in California and in the northeast of USA. We also obviously have many Europeans, especially in France.
I am definitively curious about what is our North American vs European vs Asian+Oceania people ratio, though. Perhaps with some country stats too. It would be interesting to compare with the other established calc websites.
Thanks to our wonderful Ads we now have acess to this statistic: ;D

I didnt look at the map, but maybe you messed um Germany and France as there are only a few French (according to that statistic that is)
I'm betting most of those Canadian stats are by me <_< unless Juju showed the site to some of his friends. :P
That said I am surprised the French and Netherlands stats are this low O.O, especially compared to Germany, where graphing calcs are banned in almost all schools.
This is real neat, but may I suggest political boundaries? I wish I knew where that orange bar was, because I live in Horseheads, NY and would love to meet up with some CW members.

I'm not from there, but I have a good friend from Maryland named Joe who always talks about Horseheads :D

Seems like the city of toronto to me, but i may be wrong.
Looks like the Toronto/Niagara Falls/Buffalo area, indeed.

Most likely more chances to be Hamilton than Toronto, since Hamilton is much closer to US border than Toronto.
Lot of visits from Paris region :p
IIRC there where more members from france but many of them aren't active on CW.
Actually there is Hayleia, critor, Adriweb, Epharius, grosged, TheMachine02 and me, of course :P
Come on STV you forgot me :P

Ohh ok. I remember during the paris attacks a lot of members were wondering if these guys were ok :-\
wow this map is really amazing now O.O
That one random activity bar in the ocean south of India though :P
Though that may be an island.
Yep, looks like the Maldives.
So that's where the Maldives are :P
Is there a way to view the map in 2D?
we don't think so
Aw, too bad, because it would have been cool to see the entire map at once.
Agreed. I wonder who else is a poster from NY? Anyone near Elmira?

Me

Long Island, so I'm below you (about 4 hours distance)
Good to know anyways. :)
something strange is going on O.o
USA activity dropped pretty bad, UK, too while German activity has increased a lot O.o
I wonder i we have new german members or what it is that caused this O.o
(statistic taken from ad views)
I admit it was exectly like this in the first days after we added ads, but then it changed and ever since then germany was at maybe 1/3th of canada and UK at 1/4th. it seems to have changed back to how it once was...

@p2 it's all you, you visit CW so often that you artificially inflate the pageviews by such a large amount.
/me hides
That's actually not unlikely sorunome. ALthough you seem to be more active as of recently, too :P

Mostly in IRC, though.
ok I'm usually there from 8am to 4pm and from 8pm to 11pm every day which makes about 11hours a day... But can it seriously be me? O.o
We also got p4nix who was pretty active before holidays ended and we got other German users such as Vogtinator. As for the USA activity drop off I am not surprised, since when you posted this chart I checked the last members who posted and about 70% of them were from Europe.
