Title: What's your computer specs? (+what electronics do you have)
Post by: CKH4 on January 18, 2015, 03:36:37 PM
What does your computer run?
What electronics do you have?

Raspi B
Cubieboard2
Galaxy Note 3
IPhone 3gs

Desktop :
Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 (x4, Captain Obvious)
2GB Ram DDR2
Geforce 7400GT 1GB
Forgot how much HDD (probably 320 or 500)

Laptop (brand new):
i7-471HQ (2.5-3.5 Turbo)
8GB Ram DDR3
Geforce GTX850m 4GB
1To HDD.

Old laptop  :
Core 2 Duo t5550 (1.83GHz * 2 (or 1 if I had a linux kernel > 3.10))
3 GB RAM (maybe DDR2)
GeForce 8600M 512MB
160 GB HDD.

Now feel my hapiness to be able to run games at full speed and full graphisms! :3

Nice laptop, I was considering buying one with similar slightly worse specs. I went with a desktop because I could build it at my own speed.

My desktop is enough for programming on Linux at the moment, my laptop will give me a powerful work and play station for years to come.

15 MHz Z80
24 KB RAM

Jk my actual specs are the following:

Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.80 GHz (first gen)
8 GB RAM
1 Terabytes hard drive + 2 external 2 TB drives (one of which has defective USB plug, tho, cuz it often ends up disconnected)
Windows 7 SP1 64 bits
Video card: AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series
Sound card: Realtek High Definition Audio

I find it funny that despite my computer dating back in early 2010 (or 2009, depending of how long it was on store shelves), I still have twice more RAM than most people and most computers sold today. Even today I rarely use more than 50% of my RAM.

My video card would probably not run most recent games, though. I get lag in Starcraft HotS expansion sometimes when playing 4 vs 4 with large armies.

If you're planning on getting a new graphics card I would recommend nvidia gtx 750ti, for under $150 it can run anything. http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=164&D=&H=&h=&O=&o=&a=&w= (http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=164&D=&H=&h=&O=&o=&a=&w=)
I'd also recommend Asus because they have good card tweak tools so you can overclock and stuff.

Welcome and how's the 970? I'm planning on getting the Asus one. Nice build too, did you buy it and upgrade it or build it yourself?

Buy instead the 4970K, it's overclockable and can easily reach the 5GHz

The 970 is really impressive, I bought the EVGA superclocked edition with the acx 2.0 cooler right after it was released when it was only 340 dollars and it has been able to handle everything I've thrown at it. I also recently got a 4k monitor and havent played many games on it yet but most will run great at 60 fps. last I saw it has gone up quite a bit in proce but it is still more than worth it.

Thanks, I built it myself. It started out as a small upgrade to my old machine but I ended up replacing everything except the power supply.

I agree completely, for the slightly higher cost you can get much more performance out of the unlocked version. I only have the 4970 because I saw one on ebay for about 140 dollars, I wasn't even looking for a CPU at the time but I couldn''t pass it up for that price.

I bought the 8350 for $130. If I could go back I might change it but I still have to keep my build under $1k so...

/me walks for street to blast everyone away with Akatsuki ;D
I have several computers, I'll list them here:

Laptop: Acer Aspire 771G 'Azusa' running Arch
17.3" matte 1080p screen
i5 mobile something (2.5-3.1GHz dual hyper)
Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVidia GeForce GT630M (1 GB DDR3) via Optimus
750GB HDD
6GB RAM

Laptop: Acer Aspire One ZG5 (no hostname worth mentioning [actually the whole laptop is not worth mentioning])
8.9" glossy 1024*600 screen
Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz hyper)
Intel GMA950
160GB HDD
1GB RAM
trivia: battery is so dead a full one lasts about 6 minutes when idle. Also contains its own mass in dust.

Desktop: dell running XP (I dont even know the password x.x)
?" matte 1024*768 screen
1.2GHz singlecore (or so, never really checked)
NVidia GeForce2MX [175MHz, 64MB] (This thing was a beast when it came out)
1x60+1x250GB HDD [one of them was once damaged by me; accidentally boot sector when taking it out. Saved data by running ubuntu 8.04 from a CD]
640/768 MB RAM (originally 512 but I plugged another card in and I'm not sure if its 128 or 256 mb) might be ddr 2 but probably ddr1. Definitely not ddr3 :P
trivia: this was the second PC we ever got. It's from Oct 2001. Yes, that's old and it's a miracle it still works.
And I might get a semi more recent desktop from my dad for he rarely uses it anymore.

Btw, is PCI Express still common? That's what my computer has so if I wanted the katest graphic card, would it work?

Also welcome Phyxie, you should introduce yourselfhttp://codewalr.us/index.php?topic=32.msg3789 . :) Also don't forget about the modify button. :P

PCI E is still considered new. It should last you a while.

Edit. I'll also change the thread to ask about electronics I guess.

ASUS P8P67
i5 2500K 3.3GHz 4-core, slightly overclocked (could go higher, but it runs too hot and I don't want to bother with non-stock cooling. It's already fast enough for me, anyway)
12GB DDR3, 1600 MHz? (ish, don't remember for sure)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti
Displays: 1920x1080, 1440x900
Arch Linux

Disks:
3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 (SATA) (main storage)
2×2TB Western Digital Elements / My Passport (USB3) (backups)
320GB Seagate Maxtor DiamondMax 21 (PATA) (backups)
80GB Seagate Maxtor DiamondMax 21 (PATA) (backups)

I only keep the PATA disks around because they still haven't died yet. :P

This was an edit actually, since people started posting their other devices too. :)

I myself got a Nexus 5, Samsung i5510, iPod Touch 4 and several TI, Casio and HP graphic calculators. I also got many game consoles ranging from the Atari 2600 to the Xbox One.

My iPod Touch is broken, though, since I left it at 0% charge for far too long (almost 3 years)

It's great! I've heard a lot of people dislike it's new design but i like it.
A few thing don't work though, like the camera. I've had the
same problem before when i upgraded to 4.4 and a full wipe
should fix it, but i dont want to lose all my data :(.

The game streaming works very good for me with pretty much everything I've tried. I've tyested it with a few big AAA games but I really mainly use it to play gamecube games on dolphin and sometimes other emulators which is really nice because even though I could just get, for example, an snes emulator like SNESoid and play my games on that it is nice to be able to store every single ROM for every pre gamecube/ps2 consoles on my server and play them on my tablet anywhere.

So um. Akatsuki (my desktop) :
i7 3770k (with a coolermaster hyper 612s, which is good enough to handle 3.9GHz turbo but I'll have to upgrade to watercooling if I of, already tried to but I eventually noticed that it ends up throttling under load).
16GB pc3-14900 ram
Asus p8z77-v pro
AMD 7970 GHz edition (sapphire board with a dual x cooler)
Akasa cobra 750w modular PSU (cable management ftw)
Zalman z11 plus case
HDD is a Seagate barracuda 2TB/7200 rpm

It's weak spots are cooling and storage for now. I need to upgrade eventually (and also get myself a sound card because my Intel HD onboard soundcard is semi broken). I don't really need to overclock for now though and I make up for the "slowness" of an HDD (175MB/s raw read speed lol) by finding software workarounds. Besides, Linux's filesystem caching makes it really fast with my 16GB ram once everything has settled.

As for other electronics I have a nexus 4 (might get a oneplus one tho), a nexus 7 (2012), an old iPod touch, a raspberry pi b (r2), a GameCube. And my calcs that are listed in my signature. :P

If possible you should avoid overclocking until you fixed the cooling problem. Otherwise it will be closer to overcooking than overclocking. :P

The cpu is indeed 2.5 times faster but the LCD doesn't seem to like it.so I imaging I messed something up somewhere)

With TI-France, it's only a matter of time before the TI-84 becomes a thing. They might even release three different calcs under that name over the next decade O.O. TI-France is really weird since the last decade when it comes to calc names:

North America France
TI-83TI-82 Stats.Fr
TI-83 PlusTI-82 Plus
TI-84 PlusTI-84 Pocket.Fr
TI-84 Plus Silver EditionTI-83 Plus.Fr USB
TI-84 Plus CETI-83 Premium CE

Of course, the last one is slightly different than the 84+CE but still...

Also, what's funny is how in 2000 TI discontinued the TI-83, yet in 2004 they decide to re-introduce it (as the TI-82 Stats). The exact same thing happened with the current TI-83 Plus.Fr (the 84+SE was discontinued in 2010 in France then re-introduced in 2013 as that new calc) It would be funny if we went through a recession and TI decided to re-introduce the TI-81 as budget calc O.O

It's because TI discontinued the TI-84+ and TI-84 Pocket.Fr when they released the second TI-83 Plus.Fr. The weirdest part is that during that time, the TI-84+/Pocket.Fr were actually more expensive than the TI-83 Plus.FR USB. Also until 2013 there used to be another TI-83 Plus.Fr which was a real TI-83 Plus, so I bet some people got confused about which one to choose.

Well, to be honest, France has a long of history of renaming stuff, often for no reasons, especially anime and cartoons. Quebec isn't any better with movies, though (Naked Gun series, anyone?). :P The issue with TI models, though, is that those models were previously released under their original names in France in the 90's and early 2000's before finally being pulled from the market then re-released under a new name. Because of that, people are even more confused now.

As for other TI issues, just the many BASIC speed oddities speak for themselves. For example, this, with all matrix elements equal to 1:

If [A](1,1)>0:Output(1,1+B,Str1
If [A](1,2)>0:Output(1,2+B,Str1
If [A](1,3)>0:Output(1,3+B,Str1
If [A](1,4)>0:Output(1,4+B,Str1
If [A](2,1)>0:Output(2,1+B,Str1
If [A](2,2)>0:Output(2,2+B,Str1
If [A](2,3)>0:Output(2,3+B,Str1
If [A](2,4)>0:Output(2,4+B,Str1
If [A](3,1)>0:Output(3,1+B,Str1
If [A](3,2)>0:Output(3,2+B,Str1
If [A](3,3)>0:Output(3,3+B,Str1
If [A](3,4)>0:Output(3,4+B,Str1

Runs about twice faster than this:
For(A,1,3)
For(C,1,4)
If [A](A,C)>0:Output(A,C+B,Str1
End
End

So basically, in TI-BASIC, to get the highest possible speed, you sometimes have to sacrify considerable amounts of space.

What I hate the most is when Windows updater suddenly starts its countdown sequence to reboot so if it says 10 minutes while I am in-game, then I won't see it. I often lost game progress and Starcraft matchups because of Windows update forcing reboots.

At least it's not as bad as in Windows XP where it nagged you every 5 minute asking you if you want to reboot, sometimes right as you were about to hit the Enter key.

I think being able to disable them would be for the best, since Windows 10 is for both deksops and tablets. People with tablets will often lose their Internet connection so auto-updating would be risky for an OS like Windows.

I really don't understand how MS did such a bad job with the Windows update system, there are so many problems with it. Everything is so coupled that you need to reboot when a reboot really shouldn't be necessary, it gets in the way of the user and inconveniences them, is ridiculously slow (what is that thing even doing?!?), and then to top it all off the reboots are really slow too. All those problems aside, their updater is essentially just a package manager except that it is crippled to only manage MS packages. The lack of a real package management system in Windows for so long has really been harmful to their ecosystem IMO. Luckily, I haven't used Windows in many years other than encounters through jobs, so I have the luxury of sitting back laughing at their mess :P
Title: Re: What's your computer specs? (+what electronics do you have)
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 04, 2015, 05:00:23 AM
Yeah I don't think all updates should even require a reboot either. What is worse is that certain softwares still requires a full reboot as well and they're not even OSes. As for speed I didn't notice any issue when updating until last year. Nowadays it takes several minutes to do so. Rebooting speed isn't always an issue but if someone has a lot of stuff on his computer, especially stuff that runs on startup, then it can take up to a minute before he can do anything when inside Windows.

At least they do not prevent downgrading to previous system updates like TI does with the Nspire (and tried to do with the TI-84+). If they ever do that then people will be in trouble if a Windows update causes problems (such as me when I ran XP SP2 and tried to upgrade to SP3. What a disaster it was)
Title: Re: What's your computer specs? (+what electronics do you have)
Post by: CKH4 on February 04, 2015, 01:21:12 PM
A little while ago it took my laptop like 4 hours to boot after it froze while updating so I had to hard shut down when it was updating. Luckily it still worked though.

I didn't know that ti prevented downgrade on the 84+ series, which OS did they start on?

Title: Re: What's your computer specs? (+what electronics do you have)

IIRC, on Windows XP you could turn off the nagging every 5 minutes to reboot, but you had to do it on every reboot. I wonder if this is the same on other Windows OSes? Also, another annoying thing about Windows is how it loves to steal window focus. I downloaded a program for XP that fixed that once, but then it stopped doing anything. I'll need to check if such program exists for Windows 7. TI-Connect and ESPECIALLY, ESPECIALLY TI-Nspire Student cware are particularly bad about that.

It has:
-Intel i7 950 CPU
- Nvidia GTX 470
-6 GB of DDR3 RAM
-1 TB hard drive
-Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Motherboard

Some parts are a bit dated, but it's much, MUCH better than my old computer.

I think it's 1st generation. The Intel site lists it under "previous generation." It's one of the components I'm gonna update when I get the chance. I'm gonna go for a newer CPU, a GTX 980, and some more RAM once I get the funds.

Wow what do you need all that RAM for? O.O I myself rarely use more than 5 GB on my 8 GB RAM computer.

RAM speed is relevant during pretty much everything, but it's just that it isn't a bottleneck anymore above a certain point. Also, 1600MHz RAM isn't necessarily faster than 1333MHz - timings matter too. This is especially the case with 1600MHz vs 1866MHz.

RAM clock frequency is linked to how much data per second you can transfer to and from the RAM. For instance, if you have 1600MHz RAMs on 2 64-bit channels, you can transfer up to 25 GB/s. Of course, if you never reach that speed, going to 1866MHz (29 GB/s in the above example) will be pretty negligible. Make sure your CPU supports that, though.

I just ordered a 970, the EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0 4GB (or 3,5GB :) ). It was reduced in price, from €380 to €330, so I just did it.
Wow, I  am curious how well it will run newest games at max settings :)
Skyrim at several hundred fps according to my friend.

But Skyrim is from 2011-12 IIRC. What about a big game from 2014 such as a first person shooter and using 4K? :P

I heard recent stories about Newegg prices being more and more expensive since the last year or so if we compare them to competition. But it might be because of the Canadian dollar being worth $0.70 USD because all the ones that told me that live in Canada. A lot of local stores are probably still selling their stock from when the dollar was still worth $0.90 USD. But yeah I was basically advised to think twice now before buying stuff from Newegg.ca and to check prices at other online retailers to see if I can get my stuff for much cheaper elsewhere.

The 970 isn't a card for 4K gaming, you really want double or even triple GTX 980s if you want to somewhat comfortably game at 4K.

I'd like to accentuate the somewhat as no current configuration allows playing high-end games (or badly optimize dones like the last Farcry) on 4k at 60FPS.

Note that you'd probably want the Titan Black. The normal Titan is getting a bit outdated - the gaming performance of the GTX 970 actually exceeds the GTX Titan. But that's mostly because the Titan is mostly aimed at GPGPU, like CUDA and OpenCL, or things like Cumred_Snektron's particle thingy - it easily doubles the GTX 970's performance in Passmark Direct Compute.

By the way, my GPU is arriving tomorrow :D

I just tested, and I can run your particle simulator at a texture size of 4096^2, so 16777216 particles. It generally runs at 55-60 FPS, but sometimes dips down into the low 50, high 40s. Regardless, this thing has some serious horsepower. It also runs Battlefield 3 on ultra with 110-140 FPS :D

In other news I built my computer mentioned on the first page with possibly some differences. Here are the specs:
Processor: AMD FX-8350 4GHz 8 Core
CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 54.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI 970 GAMING ATX AM3+ Motherboard
Ram: 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1866MHz DDR3
Storage: Western Digital Blue 1TB 7200 RPM HDD
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card
Case: Thermaltake Urban S31 Window ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Also I'm considering getting a laptop but not until I get a ti 84 plus ce and an HP prime.

Solution: Use a lightweight browser.

Safari is pretty good. If you want to go super lightweight, theres Surf: http://surf.suckless.org (http://surf.suckless.org).

I use Opera. I found that it runs a lot better than Chrome, but I have a small suspicion that it is placebo since Opera and Chrome are both based on Chromium

Lol my main PC is a Dell Inspirion too. It has 4GB of RAM too and an Intel Core i3 but it just runs fine, even when having 30 Google Chrome Tabs open while having Lubuntu run in Virtual Box and Putty and WinSCP and VNC and Visual Studio 2010 Pro open.
This is a rather standard amount of open stuff for me.
I normally just put it into standby and it just works fine for me.

I do have two other desktop computers, both from Dell.
The first one has and Core 2 Duo and 4 GB of RAM and is so slow that is hurts.

The other one is a fully overpowered workstation with 8GB of RAM, two physical Intel Xeon Processors running each at (I guess it was 2.4GHZ but I can be wrong) and a good graphics card. It is a real great PC, but as I didn't found a place in my room for it, I put it into a room upstairs and I am not using it as I'm to lazy to walk upstairs to use it.

I also have three Raspberry Pi's, one Beagle Bone Black, one ZipIt Z2, one Motorola Moto G2, one hacked Linux WLAN router, one TI-84+ and one unfinished homemade z80.

These are all my PCs (note that all of them were used when I got them except for the following: the BeagleBone, the Pi's, the z80s (Calc + Chips), the Motorola and the ZipIt Z2).

Opera used to use its own engine, Presto, and had some unique features. When version 15 came out they ditched Presto and went with Chromium engine, ditched many staple features but kept an UI and other features similar to old Opera, which is why the UI might look a bit special to people used to Chrome and Firefox.

So I had to downgrade to a NVIDIA Geforce GT 710 from my AMD Radeon 6700 series card. While it has 2048 MB of dedicated video memory instead of 1024 and that it's more recent by 4 years, it's a very low-end card. The reason for going for a low-end card is because my 6700 went kaput and I couldn't afford a decent GPU. I also needed it immediately, meaning I had to buy it at a local store. It doesn't matter for me, though, because I can still use Internet, Facebook, watch 1080p videos and such.

QuoteSo I had to downgrade to a NVIDIA Geforce GT 710 from my AMD Radeon 6700 series card.
Not sure why you had to downgrade to a GT 710 when you could have gotten a Gigabyte Geforce 730 GDDR5 for pretty cheap
with decent performance for like less than 60$.
Guess you should have not spend all that money on Star Ocean V lol.

Quotemy 6700 went kaput
Did you tried the oven trick or using a heat gun on it (covering the sensible parts of course) ?
This might repair it and you should try it since it is dead anyways.

Here are my specs for my desktop pc (in repairs for now) :

and My trusty old portable PC :

If you own an AMD FX like me and want to play mono-threaded games, you can disable the virtual cores in the BIOS and have
two physical cores clocked at 3.9Ghz instead of having 6 virtual cores clocked at 1.3Ghz.

As for the Geforce GT 730, i picked it up because Nouveau fully supports it without any proprietary firmware.
On lubuntu, i have to manually enable the reclocking.
I've got to say though that performance is not bad, Yandere Simulator maxed out runs at about 15 FPS. (Normal runs double that)
Title: Re: What's your computer specs? (+what electronics do you have)
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on July 13, 2016, 02:41:05 AM
The Gigabyte Geforce 730 GDDR5 was not available in any brick and mortar store. Star Ocean V, Mighty no 9 and one of the two Xenoblade games were planned for purchase for months. The graphic card failure was not expected until about a week ago. I needed a replacement immediately or I was pretty much left with no computer at all at this point.

As for the 6700 it's pretty much fried. ANyway I just ran Starcraft II most recent version in a 6 vs 6 game and while the frame rate is about 45 FPS instead of 50, it seems more consistent with no hiccups. So I'm good to go until Starcraft 3 comes out. Starcraft is all I play on computers that is even close to video intensive.

Oh and they say at Starcraft II it's better to disable shaders anyway. I don't, but many pro gamers do, because it's easier to see units.

iMac 27" mid-2011
Mac OS X 10.9.5
Intel Core i5 2.7GHz
8GB DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 Mo

Dell Inspiron Mini 1010 (used mostly as a server)
Arch Linux
Intel Atom CPU Z520 1.33GHz
1GB DDR2
Intel GMA 500
One small 12" screen (1366x768 iirc)

Raspberry Pi 3 B v1.2 (used for gaming, probably)
Broadcom BCM2709
1GB CPU+GPU RAM
Headless for now

3 dead laptops

I have a Dell workstation with two dual core Intel Xeon's and 6 GB RAM. I use it for compiling firmware (mostly) and sometimes if I just need a PC.
It runs Xubuntu and Windows 7 Pro.

Then I have an HP notebook which I use basically all the time for anything. It has an AMD A8, a 17" screen, 1 TB HDD and 8 GB RAM. It runs Fedora and Windows 10 (the later one is basically never used except for Microsoft Office, SolidWorks and Photoshop/Premiere).

I also own an ASUS transformable tablet. It has a detachable keyboard, 1 GB RAM, a quad-core Intel Atom (I think) 32 GB flash storage and barely runs the factory installed Windows 10.

For my work desk I have a thin client with 1 GB RAM, 16 GB flash storage and a 1 GHz single-core AMD processor. It controls my USB oscilloscope and logic analyzer and runs Windows XP.

For my music I have a thin client set up as a server. It has 1 GB RAM, 500 GB disk storage, Gigabit Ethernet and has an Intel Atom 1.7 GHz CPU. It is used to stream my music to my internet radio and to sync my devices.

My best item is probably my Commodore 64C which is standing on my desk.

I also have an unused BeagleBone Black, a Raspberry Pi B, a ZipIt Z2 netbook (Intel XScale ARM CPU @ 400 MHz IIRC, 32 MB RAM IIRC) which I use relatively often for playing internet radio. There are also a lot of routers laying around in my drawer which are waiting for a project differently from what they were meant to be used.
I am also a partial owner of our new home router/firewall that runs FreeBSD, has a quad core AMD CPU, 4 GB RAM, 3 gigabit Intel Ethernet ports and a 16 GB SSD.

There might be more that I have forgotten, but this is all I know right out of my head now.

Eh, it no longer shutdown that much nowadays. Except I have to start it in Single-User Mode so it skips whatever making it shutdown.
Ah ok, I'm glad it doesn't as much anymore. But sometimes electronics do that. They'll show signs of troubles, then start working fine again for a while before finally going poof.

@DarkestEx that's a lot of hardware! O.O Also I wonder if Xeon processors are good? I mean, how do they compare with an Intel Core i3, i5 or i7, for example?

Xeon processors are the highest tier at Intel, often used on headless servers, where you need performance to handle a lot of stuff at the same time, as opposed to Atom, which is pretty much for low-energy netbooks and other lowest-tier laptops, often when an ARM chip will do the job but you want Windows.

Ah ok. I wasn't sure because of people saying Atom ones weren't great or something. So I thought Xeon was another low-end tier.

I've now got an ASUS 970 pro gaming/aura motherboard since my last one sparked and started burning o.o. Luckily none of my other components were damaged,
but i had to replace it. I had to reinstall windows because it was still using the drivers for my old motherboard which ofcourse wouldn't work. Which also meant that i had to move all my data on my main ssd to make room to change from mbr to gpt.

Over the years using Music2000/MTVMusicGenerator on windows, i've come to the conclusion that it is one of those pc games that is caught between a rock and a hard place on Windows OS... It doesn't need MSDOS to function, but yet deteriorates in quality with any new Windows release.  When I used to have WinXP I had little to no problems using the program.  However, it started giving me more issues on Win7.  You're best (and only) bet is to fool around with the "Compatibility" tab when you right click the game icon and go to properties.  Since the game was made for Win95/98/2000, start there, and then work your way forward.  Whichever one handles better, use that as your setting for the game.

Since I'm using Linux, I'm using "CrossOver" to play any Windows PC games I have, and Music2000/MTVMusicGenerator gives me no issues on that.

It's not that much anymore really. For current games more than 8GB isn't necessary yet, but the upcoming ones are probably going to require at least 12GB.
I've had 16GB since 2013, but that's mostly because I use it for compiling software. I'm definitely going for at least 32GB of RAM in my next rig.

I currently have 20GB of RAM in my computer. But the main reason behind this is that I bought a 16GB kit when I built my PC last year (To be able to run heavy software like Unreal Engine and Inventor without swapping, and then I found 2 extra 2GB in an old PC and I just put those in because there were still 2 slots free and who doesn't like free extra RAM?

It does actually get used almost completely when doing heavy lighting building in Unreal Engine or when rendering in Inventor.

Yeah, I could have made it fine on 8GB, but I really enjoy the peace of mind knowing no matter how many tabs and programs I run (I don't like closing programs/tabs  <_<) I'll never run out of RAM.

You might be limited in bandwidth by those extra 4GB if they are cheaper than the 16GB you bought. Each memory channel is constrained by the slowest stick you put in. Of course, for your use case which is mostly caching large amounts of data, it's actually beneficial since otherwise that data would be swapped or re-read from disk which would be much slower, even with an SSD.

That's a fair use case, but under normal use I rarely exceed 4GB of memory usage (I also tend to have a good amount of tabs open, usually in the 15-20 range and more). That's on Linux and I use a pretty lightweight desktop setup though so obviously on recent versions of Windows you'll need a little more, but 8GB should be enough. Plus considering your CPU, your computer is not very good at multitasking anyway. :P

I'll update my specs since my rig has changed a little bit since I first posted about it.

I don't have a particular order of priorities for these but I think the GPU will come first.

Well, most computers they sell in stores here still only have 4 GB of RAM. Only the higher-end ones have 8 or 12 GB and 12 GB is still very rare. I rarely use more than 22% and during games I might use up to 60% at most, but yeah I agree that for newer games I would probably need to build a PC myself (even though it's much more expensive in Canada if your parts don't come from one single store and that the store doesn't combine shipping)

Actually,  the extra 4GB has exactly the same specs than the original 16GB (apart from the capacity off course). And yeah, I think software like Unreal mostly use that much RAM to cache stuff, since it seems to always try to use as much RAM as it can without causing swapping (as long as all of it is needed). My guess is that it temporarily loads as much from rendered levels and lightmaps as possible in the RAM because reading/writing there is much faster than doing it from the hard drive (especially since most people store Unreal Engine projects on an HDD, since they can get quite big).

So it seems that the Nexus 5 can "emulate" iPhone 6's bending feature. I just noticed last night that my Nexus 5 was bent. That might explain why it was wiggling when typing stuff when the phone was sitting on a flat surface (it did it long ago due to the camera, but it became worse recently).

As you can notice, the screen is not as bent as the rest of the phone. It's not cracked either, yet. Hopefully it's safe until my mobile contract expires on August 24th (and I hope I can get another rebate like two years ago so that I won't end up with a crappy Alcatel phone)

Erm, HTC phones are notorious for having faulty USB/charging plugs, though, at least the lower-end phones. I would prefer staying away from them unless my phone plan includes a warranty.

As for my Nexus 5, I suspect that the bending happened while I went to Quebec City last week and wore shorts with small pockets. I had to put the phone in a way that it won't fall off my pockets. Or it could be when I did some work at my grandmother's home the other day, but I did even more rough work in the past and never had any problem, so I think it might be the small pockets thing. Else maybe it just slowly ended up that way over time and I didn't notice until now.

HTC phones are great themselves, except when you go to the low-end phones, when it breaks, well, it breaks. Otherwise, they're easily crackable, rootable, unlockable, name it, and that's nice for the power user.

With lower-end ones (not as low-end as my Samsung i5510 though), Juju went through two different HTC phonees in one year, both of which had different charging plug issues and I heard other people who had charger issues with their HTC. 1TB spinny disk (will be RAID 1 once I find another decent drive for relatively cheap)
256GB SSD used for caching
64GB ram

with dual NICs, and all the general servery stuff

I'm not going to list all the electronics because that would be a lot of listing stuff...
Speaking of phones though, I have a Note 3 with CM on it. It's pretty nice.

In my case, I'm not planning to shell any money at all on a phone. It would have to be a phone plan that includes the entire phone's cost, like last time, hence why there are chances that I end up with a lower-end phone than my Nexus 5. But sometimes Videotron are nice and offers unnanounced rebates/promotions to existing customers, so maybe I'll be lucky again. I also need to make sure that the phone plan isn't overpriced so that it won't end up costing more than a separate phone and cheaper plan.

I still have the same computer I bought I February 2010, so it has been in use for over 9 years now. However, I recently installed a solid state drive with a fresh new Windows 10 install and it runs much faster than before. It needs a better GPU, though (it's the 4th graphic card this PC goes through)

I thought it would be cool to see what others have as computer. In my case, nothing fancy, as I've been using the same PC for over 9 years, but it got recent upgrades and the GPU was upgraded 4 times and on March 25 it got a RAM upgrade.

Processor: Intel Core i7 860 @ 2.8 GHz
RAM: 16 GB DDR3
Storage: 250 GB SSD & 1 TB HDD
GPU: 4 GB NVidia Geforce GTX 1050 TI
OS: Windows 10 Pro

Since the SSD update and Windows re-install, my old computer is running so much faster. I also got a laptop, which is a dual-core around 2.6 GHz, with 6 GB RAM and a 600 GB hard drive. It's slow but I keep it for the time being as it can be handy when I invite people home or for emulation.

I have like 5 computers in my room cause I've been taught I should (https://www.homestuck.com/story/3197) carry no less than 5 computers (https://www.homestuck.com/story/3432) at all times, like a sensible person (https://www.homestuck.com/story/4182). They're all more or less cty and probably wouldn't run Crysis.

Main computer:

CPU: Intel Core i5 2,7 GHz
RAM: 14 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
Displays: 19" Samsung SyncMaster 950b CRT 1600x1200 + 27" iMac (mid-2011) 2560x1440
OS: macOS Sierra 10.12

Alt computer:

CPU: Pentium E2220 2,4 GHz
RAM: 2 GB DDR2
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 2 GB
Display: some 35" Sony TV, 1080p
OS: Arch Linux 4.20 (lol)

Alt alt computer:

Model: Apple //c
Display: either a green monochrome CRT or it's plugged to the above TV

Alt alt alt computer:

Model: Raspberry Pi 3 B+
Display: some 5" 800x480 thing I got off some Chinese site I dunno

Alt alt alt alt computer:

Model: Microsoft Surface RT 1
Does something: no

Right now I'm using a battle-scarred Acer Chromebook R13 as my main driver. I bought it on a whim because my stuff tends to regularly blow up and my Debian laptop tried my patience one too many times. It proved to be both resilient and surprisingly versatile, especially since crostini and its Debian containers became available on it. It punches way above its weight for a fanless, quad-core ARM64, 13-inch laptop with 12 hours of battery.

My normal computer is a Ryzen 1800X with 32 GiB of RAM, 512 GB of SSD and a 1440p display, used as a beefy programming workstation. Like its owner, it's very effective at its job yet tends to crash every so often. I haven't booted it up in weeks because my Chromebook gets the job done and can sit on my lap.

I also have a bunch of other computers, but nothing really noteworthy nor recently used.

Not really my computers, but I do co-maintain a 5-rack datacenter at my job among other things. Our latest acquisition is a Dell PowerEdge R7425 with 64 cores, 192 GiB of RAM and 3x 2 TiB SSDs, soon to be used as a build machine. It's ludicrously powerful, especially since I've banned VMs on it and decreed only Docker containers shall be used. Being able to automatically invoke pristine Jenkins worker containers on-demand on it is just icing on the cake.

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 3.2 GHz 6-Core @3.75GHz
8GB DDR4-3000 RAM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB
MSI B350M MORTAR Micro ATX AM4
250GB SSD
1TB HDD

I built this in March 2018, was going for a mid-range build that could do heavier processing tasks and gaming than my ageing laptops could do. The case is a Fractal Design Focus G Mini (Black). This was during the time graphics cards and RAM prices were high up there, thought about a 1050TI, but am glad I went with the 1060.

My current phone is a Huawei Honor 10, also bought last year (mid-range version of the P20)

Damn, that's a lot of RAM. I rarely use more than 10 GB at once (Minecraft with high-res textures and shader packs). I think my mobo only supports up to 16 GB too. I really needed to upgrade my GPU if I wanted to play new games higher than medium settings.

Hehe, indeed. I am actually using this much on a regular basis and might even consider upgrading one last time to 32 GB at some point.
For me, primarily the web browser's memory management gets less efficient the more RAM is available. The same amount of tabs open will inflate RAM more now.
I tend to keep various CAD programs open at the same time, while developing electronics, along said browser. This will also eat up quite a lot of RAM.
My graphics card is really quite basic compared to yours ;)
But for me, it's more than enough to play Minecraft well. I don't tend to play a lot on PC (primarily on console) so it doesn't matter much to me.

And I actually ended up doing that. It's now fully maxed out and runs great.

On a side note I have the impression that in the last decade, processors did not increase that much in power. I mean, for most new games my PC doesn't meet the minimum CPU requirements, yet I can still run them without stuttering unless I setup everything to maximum (even then, sometimes stuttering is minimal). Of course, GPU and SSD plays a big factor now with out fast games run and how fast my PC loads, but I still find it incredible that I can stick with a decade old PC and still have no problem gaming and browsing heavy websites.

I just wish I had more money last year so I could have gone with a larger SSD or a second SSD.

If you're talking about raw CPU speed, Moore's Law kind of doesn't apply anymore, it kind of plateaued around 4 GHz, nowadays they're adding more and more of cores on the same chip, and improving GPUs and hard disk speed.

Yeah, when I went to college in 2003-04, teachers were talking about how in a few years, they would reach the absolute minimum possible size for a transistor and that CPU's would start increasing in size (as in how much physical space it takes inside the computer case)

The Chemnitz University of Technology gifted me an old laptop last year (a Toshiba Satellite Pro),
because it was way faster than my old ThinkPad T400....
The battery is unusable since one full battery charge lasts for 4 minutes. For this reason, I have set it up as a stationary computer.
It doesn´t have an internal hard disk since I´m booting from my Linux USB stick only.  (-_(//));
Some keys on the keyboard don´t react when pressed, so I have to use an external keyboard.
It has 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core i3 CPU.
Sometimes, when I run computationally intensive tasks on it, everything just freezes for approx. 30 seconds - 5 minutes.
I don´t know whether this is caused by the hardware or by systemd  :blah:
