Title: Fun things to know about CW
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on January 08, 2015, 12:35:46 AM
Simplemachines comes with an help section located at http://codewalr.us/index.php?action=help and wiki that you can use to learn how to use this forum properly, but since we use many mods and custom settings, there are things that might be missing, not to mention there are some oddities you might have missed since you joined. Here I go:

-When the site was first discussed one year ago, one idea I had in mind to save on hosting and have less work to do was to simply squat a dead TI forum then attempt reviving it, rather than just starting a new board from scratch. HRP was among the boards considered, since I am global moderator there, and the old CalcHaven board would have been another alternative if it wasn't for the obnoxious Webring script on the page. MaxCoderz was obviously another idea, because tr1p1ea is still sometimes around and he could have easily re-enabled registrations on that site, plus it's MaxCoderz. Of course that would have led to issues if we needed to change sub-forums or moderate, though (except maybe in the case of MaxCoderz since tr1p1ea is still around), so a brand new site was my priority over that idea if I got hosting.

-It's possible to disable the word filter in Profile->Look and Layout by checking the box that says "Leave words uncensored". Swearing is allowed here at certain conditions, so the word filter is only in place by default in order to reduce risks of seeing the site blocked by various parental and school filters.

-There is a way to disable OmnomIRC entirely, as in it won't even appear at all anymore, which can be useful if you use a very old phone or computer but cannot use Tapatalk. To do so, go to your profile, then click "Group Memberships". In there, you will see the "Regular Members (shoutbox disabled)" group. Join this group to hide the entire OmnomIRC block. You can join or leave this member group as you see fit.

-To vote a post up, click the "Like" icon that has a green circle with a thumbs up in it. To vote the post down, click the red sign that has text reading "Flag as abusive".

-The way staff is setup on this forum is unusual in the way that people in charge of managing board categories and editing the layout are not the ones who have banning and full moderator privileges. Instead, it's the moderators that are in charge of that.

-Both http://codewalr.us/154/3071 and http://codewalr.us/index.php?topic=154.msg3071#msg3071 syntaxes are supported when you want to link to a specific post.

-You need 20 posts to vote in polls and rate messages, 5 to get your attachments approved automatically and send PMs, and 1 to change your personal info, signature, avatar and upload attachments.

-There are many, many ways to use this website:
* http://codewalr.us : Standard site
* Tapatalk
* http://codewalr.us/index.php?wap2 : For people with very old phones. I don't think the IMG tag is even supported.
* http://codewalr.us/index.php?imode Same, but with different look
* http://codewalr.us/index.php?wap If your phone is even older
* http://codewalr.us/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss : RSS feed (more info on how to use it at http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0 )
* http://codewalr.us/ssi_examples.php?view=home1 : Wut? (although ssi_examples could be handy if we ever decided to create a custom page)

-If you like our Facebook or follow our Twitter pages, you will receive notifications about new topics.
* https://www.facebook.com/CodeWalrusFans
* https://twitter.com/codewalr_us

-Yes, there are easter eggs. However, the Book of Unknown and Destroy ones from SMF 1.1 are no longer available in SMF 2.0. One notable CW easter egg is if you type /walrii in the WalrusIRC shoutbox, then many walruses start bouncing through the shoutbox and in some occasions, a walrus will run or fly through certain website pages.

-The pixelated walrus you see besides the site logo and almost everywhere else is Walrii, the site mascot. :walrii: Basically, all three major english TI forums (in terms of activity) have sea animals as mascots. TI fans must like water a lot. :P

-The current site membergroups that are entirely based on post counts go as follow:
*New User       0 posts -Can post
*New User       1 posts -Can use sig/avatar/change extra profile info. Also can use the shoutbox directly on the site as opposed to just in full-screen mode. Can also upload attachments, but they require admin approval.
*New User       5 posts - Can send PMs. Attachments no longer require admin approval.
*Full User       20 posts -Can rate posts and vote in polls.
*Full User       100 posts -Can access safe-haven sub-forum even without being part of the required member group.
*Super User       500    posts

Let me know if you feel something should be added here. Maybe when the site has been around for a while, if the users grow some CW inside jokes by themselves they could eventually make it here.

Another fun thing to know is that despite the names, Streetwalrus actually is not a walrus, but DJ is.

And what about Hooloowalrus and Turiq? :P

On a side note I should add another section about Walrii above.

It depends. On Omni some people other than me often managed 800 posts in one month, and I think my average since the last few years (including Omni until mid-November then CW afterward) is around 300-600 a month :P

I'm worried that this might encourage people to spam, or to try as hard as they can not to.

I doubt it, because they know we have banhammers and downvote buttons :P (getting banned for being too spammy might be much harder than for being rude, though <_<). Random banter is tolerated but this (https://www.omnimaga.org/profile/?area=showposts;u=3970) would not

Almost 9, to be exact. The 2nd Omni board (excluding yAronet) opened in May 2005 but Omnimaga closed for 6  months from March 2008 to August 2008

Aaah ok, I was wondering because you weren't very active recently, I didn't post on Omni for a few weeks and I only post about 1-4 times a day on Cemetech. But again community activity was 2008-esque lately, so by being rarer, new posts are not missed as easily :P

Fortunately for you there should be some familiar faces over here, although aside from me, most members joined the community between late 2010 and early 2013. However, since we seem to be getting some new users lately, I would recommend introducing yourself in the topic linked in that welcome PM you probably got when signing up :)

Hmm, it seems like in SMF 2.0 the leet easter egg is gone. In SMF 1.1, when you had exactly 1337 posts, your postcount showed "leet" instead of "1337". Also, above 100000 posts your post count was hidden and replaced with "i am a geek".

Here is another trick I discovered about Youtube URLs: If you do not want the forum to automatically embed videos you post, just omit the www at the beginning:

I'm unsure. That's how the mod is setup I guess, plus it seems common for people to use it with Youtube.

That happened to me the other time when I wanted to link to YouTube instead of embedding it, I just removed the www and a bunch of other stuff.

To be honest I would normally just use 1 Youtube mod with the Youtube tag but I felt it was sometimes convenient to be able to embed YT vids without having to type the Youtube tag, plus the other Youtube mod that requires it doesn't support HTTPS (there are alternatives but the last time I tried one it broke the site)

The TI forum stats spread sheet in the other topic kinda reminded me of another fun fact about CodeWalrus:

Necro-update: I updated the easter eggs part of the first post about the /walrii command and other ones. This reminds me that at some point I should update the post-count-based usergroups to be more fun. I am unsure if I want them to be level-based since it was already done before, but we could probably do it anyway and have CW-related stuff.

First off, I'm having a very tough time finding my way around CW, if there is a better place to put this post then I (or an admin) can move it if you'd like.

I was looking through my profile settings and I noticed that Cemetech (https://www.cemetech.net/index.php) is not linkable to my account while TIcalc.org is. Also, Cemetech is not under 'Our affiliates'. Would this be from a friendly rivalry, or what? Cemetech is a very big community and I would think at least equal to ticalc.org .
Title: Re: Fun things to know about CW
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on August 10, 2017, 11:47:18 PM
Yeah the account linking is more of an option to add your other account nicknames to your profile (like with AIM, Skype, etc). It's not a real link per-SE. It was not added back then because ticalc.org was the main file archives for calculator games. We are not affiliated with Cemetech because it wasn't something we considered yet. So far, we only affiliated with the two former Omnimaga affiliates, which are Planète-Casio and TI-Planet, as well as Bosaiknet gaming server community, Velocity Games and both our sister sites BroniesQC and calc.news.

As for the site layout being confusing, note that forums are a dying (and often seen as obsolete and avoided) social media medium that was originally not designed with smartphones in mind. We are planning to switch to a different forum software in the future to modernize the site and fix various issues that we had, so you might have to get used to a new layout in the future, but there are chances that we will use PhpBB 3.2, so it's possible that the options will become similar to Cemetech and TI-Planet (which uses PhpBB 2.x.x and 3.0.x respectively)

I find cemetech a lot harder to navigate then omnimaga or codewalrus. I joined omnimaga long before I joined cemetech cause the interface was a lot easier (and also omni was more axe oriented).

As for the links - as xlibman ha already said - its a link for
more social media type sites, ticalc is there because its the biggest calculator file sharing site ;)

As for affiliation codewlrus doesn't have the most friendly relationship with omni and cemetech.

I never really had issues with Cemetech interface nor Omni (other than the removal of articles until recently) and TI-Planet (other than auto-login not working properly), but in the last 2 years I notice more and more people who have a problem with at least one of those site's interface.

It depends. TI-Planet had at least 1,124,866 files, versus 46,953 on ticalc.org, but only 45,020 of those 1,124,866 files are visible to the public.

Wait really? what's the point then? O.o

Anyways I have always used ticalx cause its the most neutral IMHO.

Many of the TI-Planet files are mViewer GX files, generated for classroom use, and I believe that many people prefers them to be unlisted from the downloads section (personal data maybe?). But yeah ticalc.org is the main site since it's pretty much where the TI community was born and despite a few exceptions over the last 21 years (eg the refusal to feature xLIB APP or any Cemetech file at first), it's the most neutral place
