Hi there,
Some (if not all) of you may know it already, but I've been playing guitar for quite a long time, and sometimes I record myself playing. I put everything that's worthy of listening there on my SoundCloud page (https://www.soundcloud.com/matrefeytontias), so if you like metal you should consider giving it a look (and a hear).
I (nearly) only post full songs, so you can pretty much make an actual playlist out of it.
Also, special occasion : here in France there's a contest running, so I need as many likes as possible. Give that post a look, and a like would be much appreciated o/

Not as long as James Heitfield, though :P
Just kidding, I always liked your stuff and I liked your video on Facebook. Good luck. I'll have to listen to your new tracks soon, though, as I missed a lot of them during your absence on forums. :)
Well 6 years is still something :P
Yeah, I was absent for some months because I stopped calc programming and because school was becoming less and less compatible to fun in general. So yeah, I'm back for summer break, can't say about next year.
Indeed. Also you made so much music since I last checked that I didn't have time to listen to all of it yet, but I did listen to the first 4 songs. Very nice work :D That sounds like the metal I would mosh to.
A wild matref appears O.O
Btw, it is nice to have some new metal song :P
I released a new cover from Imperial Circus Dead Decadence a few days ago : https://soundcloud.com/matrefeytontias/cthulhus-wedding-imperial-circus-dead-decadence-instrumental-replay
Some fast death metal. I loved playing it, and it's definitely in my top 10 songs (even if it doesn't have a solo in it, yes !).
I'll have a listen once I come back from the Metallica concert \m/
Wow, nice :D it doesn't make much sense saying that, but I hope it's good (of course it is) :P
There are two concerts, one at the old 1949 stadium that's gonna be boarded up or locked down tomorrow. In this one theu're gonna play old songs mostly and the stage set up like the 80's. In two days they'll play at the new arena that opened this month, with more new songs and a 360° stage.
I couldn't get tix for the 2nd concert but my priority was for the first concert. While I like Reload and Death Magnetic, I much prefer Black Album and older.
Anyway I'm done hijacking your topic. By the way do you plan to do some Metallica covers?
@matrefeytontias I just listened to your new song now and I am impressed. It sounds a lot like professional stuff :D
Wow really :P it still sounds pretty amateur to me, but I'm glad you like it anyway ^^
Also I have been thinking of covering the "violent part" in One, I'll probably do that soon.
You mean the part where Hettfield screams "DARKNESS..." ?
That would be cool to hear your rendition of one or at least that part. :D
Yeah that part. I like it so much as it's one of the first metal songs I ever listened to, even prior listening to Black Widow of La Porte. I fully enjoyed it later though, once I was 100% into metal :P
Yeah, One is really awesome. Have fun and good luck. :D
So yeah, I did a song that is absolutely not One :P It's rather The Wrath by Symbolik ; a melodic technical death metal song (subgenres 101), very fun to play, and (IMO) with a beautiful melody :P

Awesome to see new music from you. You should compose some stuff for nKaruga PC :)
If you take a close look at my SoundCloud stream, you'll realize there are only 2 songs that I made myself, one of them being terrible, so you can guess I don't compose much :P I feel like I quite suck at it, so I just play stuff that already exists. I'll probably have someone else work on the music for nKaruga.
IIRC I listened to one of them and I liked them. For a video game you would need to make the tracks much shorter, though, and perhaps loop-friendly. Perhaps one day you'll get even better at composing, but it's not a hurry, since you are already very good at playing music and we already enjoy that :)
Something I've been wanting to do for a long time was to record something from Rings of Saturn, because it's always so technical. So I didn't do a full song yet (because the drums are so hard to program), but still, here's something.

By the way matref, do you play or have you ever played with a band ?
I'm in a band right now, but with school and stuff we can barely play once a week.
Oh nice, too bad you can't play together too often though. :(
Nice song so far Matref. Also glad that you are in a band. Hopefully you can play more together in the future and perhaps record some gigs. :)
Alright alright alright ! After countless hours of painful recording, and after finding out I actually have (much) more trouble playing easy parts than hard parts, here's my retake on Utopia, by Rings of Saturn !
I did it part because I love the song and part because I just wanted a full Rings of Saturn song somewhere on my SoundCloud. So yeah :P

Note that I didn't take care of the drums this time, someone else was kind enough to let me use the presets they had made in the past.
Enjoy !
I like that more melodic stuff. Good job and I'm amazed at how you manage to play this long O.O (the song is over 5 minutes long) :)
Thanks ! Well Black Widow of La Porte is 7 minutes long and that didn't bother me the least anyway :P
If you would have done non-death metal genres, then you could have done And then there was silence, by Blind Guardian. :P
It's not that I only do death metal subgenres, it's just that some songs are just not as enjoyable without lyrics. My initial motive to do these covers was that there was this japanese guitarist UtsuP that used Vocaloids as his singers, and many of my friends just couldn't take it. So I replayed some of the songs in instrumental form so that they could listen to it and enjoy it. It then evolved into me just playing songs I like and that I find enjoyable even in instrumental form.
Ah ok for some reasons I always thought that you only liked stuff with growls, but also as long as it was brutal and less melodic if possible. I agree that sometimes it can be hard to enjoy songs without lyrics, though. When it comes to metal I prefer having some. With electronic music it depends of the melody for me.
In instrumental form, though, you can add extra guitar to replace the lyrics, though, so sometimes it either still sounds good, it either sounds closer to VGM or both.
I can't wait for new songs from you (http://img.codewalr.us/guitarwalrii.gif)(http://img.codewalr.us/streetwalrii3.gif)
Bumpity bump, great news are around the corner !
I've got a producer ! That means I've got someone to take care of the mixing and mastering of my tracks, allowing them to sound much more awesome. You can hear the improvement by yourself with my latest track : https://soundcloud.com/matrefeytontias/invasion-rings-of-saturn-full-instrumental-replay
Also, I'm done with my exams, so that means I'll be more active working on my games and my music. How good is that ?
Darn, congratulations man. That's awesome!

@matrefeytontias , especially the producer part. Does he ask a big percentage of your royalties if you decide to sell your music? Because if you can spend even more time making music and not mastering, then perhaps one day you'll get ideas to make your very own songs, or get more time to ask permission to artists for selling cover songs, and you could try to get into the music industry (even if just Bandcamp and not full-time). Either way I can't wait to listen to your new songs when they arrive. :)
Also I hope you have more free time to code again soon :) (I hope you don't have summer school >.<)
Well, he's a hobbyist just like me, so we're not talking about money because neither of us make any from our music. I don't see that as a possibility in the near future either, so I'm not really concerned about that.
Nah, no summer school for me, although I do have oral exams starting June up until the end of July.
Ah ok. Either way, now you don't have to worry as much about mastering/mixing so that's still a big plus :3=
Correction, now I will have actual mastering/mixing :P it's not like I was doing much. Compared to what my producer does now, I was literally doing nothing.
I thought you did mixing, because most of your recordings had high quality O.O
You call that high quality ? :P In my opinion it's terrible quality, but again that might be because I usually have harsh judging towards my own work.
The latter. <_< It might not be the best but I did hear poorer quality from many artists before. Some just use a tape recorder or webcam.
Well, what can I say, I'm happy you feel that way :P
DUDES !
The day has finally come when I start working on an actual EP ! Yes ! With songs in it and all that ! Ain't that just the best ? 8D
This debut EP of mine is called Circular Permutations, and will be mostly instrumental, technical death metal tracks (so far) heavily inspired by bands such as Blotted Science, and more generally Ron Jarzombek's work (praise be unto him).
I just released the first song off of the EP, which also happens to be the title track, and it's very special to me. The reason why this is, is because I've been playing music for 13 years and guitar for 8 years, and this is the 3rd song I've ever written. On top of this, this is the first song I've ever written that I'm deeply, genuinely proud of and happy with. So I think you'll like it as well !
https://soundcloud.com/matrefeytontias/circular-permutations
Fun fact : I generated the artwork by writing a GLSL program that
@Snektron sneakily (and somehow) got his hands onto :P
Hiya Matref, sorry I didn't get to check this out yet and now I did. Amazing song. I'm glad to see a brand new song from you, after hearing your covers. This sounds very professional and good. I hope your EP project comes to fruition :)
:3=
Thanks, I'm very glad you liked it ! As you said, it also feels good for me to finally release something of my own after all those covers (something good, might I add).
I'm also very excited to see how the EP is gonna turn out !
holy crap, that's pretty epic :o
It is actually :P

The covers were amazingly done, but brand new songs are even better if you have inspiration because this means you can release an album of your own one day :)
