So last August and since late December, sometimes my Windows 7 PC will randomly shuts down by itself then reboot. It's not related to heat because most of the time it happened when my bedroom and computer were colder. However, what I noticed is that it usually happens a few minutes after connecting my TI-84 Plus CE and transfered programs with TI-Connect CE via direct USB (and ironically, I was active coding in August, stopped then started again this Winter). It also happened before when playing Minecraft for several hours in a row.
There is no warning, it just happens instantly and I couldn't find anything in my event log that could indicate the problem, unless I'm looking at the wrong place. I once went 2 months without any shutdown.
What is strange is that during Windows update, my CPU will get hot and my fans spinning, yet I won't get any shut down then. I also don't recall ever running into that issue while playing Starcraft II maxed out.
I wonder what might be the cause?

Nah, it never happened while it was running. Also now it just happened again without TI-Connect USB activity nor any overheating.
Something I forgot to mention is that it happened more often while my Xbox One was running in the next room, but it also happens when it's not. I wonder if it could be power-related, though.
I also have two external hard drives, but they use their own power adapter.

Check driver issues somehow, and of course power issues (another outlet maybe). You should disable Windows Update anyway because it's a piece of crap, I disabled it after getting Win7 SP1 and some updates. Disabling it really helped some issues I had.
I had a computer where it was the PSU causing this behavior, for what thats worth.
The solution : switch to a linux distribution. :p
But yeah, that looks like either a overheat issue or a PSU one.
I had this problem once as well recently, do the following files exist on your pc?
-C:/Windows/MEMORY.dmp
-C:/Windows/Minidump/XXXXXX-XXXXX-XX.dmp (insert random numbers on X)
If you answer "yes" to at least one of those questions, you're most likely dealing with BSODs. Browse eventvwr around the time of the crash or use some 3rd party program (I like BlueScreenView from Nirsoft) to determine the bugcheckcode.
@gameblabla I doubt it's overheating, because it often happens when my PC runs cool. How would I check if it's my PSU before buying a new one, in case it's not it? (eg if it's the wall socket or something. I know in the kitchen I can't use the microwave and toaster at the same time ever since they switched from a fuse system to a breaker one last year, else they shut down)
@brentmaas it happened last August, then it stopped until Christmas holidays. Then it stopped from Early January to late February and then again from then until April. I'll check if I have those files. Note that I never actually saw a BSOD appear on this computer, though.
EDIT: I have MEMORY.DMP and Minidump/101715-41371-01.dmp on my PC, but the last modified and creation date is from October 17 2015.

In that case, you can rule it out, unless memory dumps have been magically disabled (System - Advanced system settings - Advanced - Startup and recovery - System failure - Write debugging information).
I'll have to check that when I get home. I am 100% sure they are still enabled, though.

Oh, okay. It's good to check, though, because Windows can do some weird things to your settings at certain events, like disabling recovery points when upgrading from 8.1 -> 10. You won't really know about that until your pc died for some reason and you don't have any backups.
Yeah true, and I heard about data losses when people upgraded to 10.
