Title: [4x3][the game][Z80][TI 84] The Game: Contest Edition
Post by: Snektron on May 30, 2015, 10:37:34 PM
Hello! So, at the last moment i decided to make something to make something for the 4x3 challenge.

In The Game: Contest Edition, the aim is to find the correct key.
At the start, the game randomly picks a key, and it's up to you to find it!
if you find the right key, you win. Else, you lose the game.

it also features a special escape key, enter. But who would use that right? i mean it's such a thrilling
game, you wouldn't want to end it before you win, right?
also: you lost

also quite ironically: if you play the game and win, you also lose the game
then again, if you lose you lose 2 times. 2 games in one since you keep getting reminded if the game.

Wait, we can actually win the game? O.O

Anyway interesting idea I guess. :P Also you can't lose the other game more than once every 30 minutes. :P

Also I made a non-4x3 version of The Game a few years ago in TI-BASIC on the home screen. It was 26 bytes large and is probably the smallest TI game ever. :P

At first i though of you only be able to lose, but i thought that would not really be a game :P

Actually that's a bit true, especially considering it's a game contest. But again I remember people submitting Conway's Game of Life to game contests in the past, which isn't even close to a game. :P

Well, it's a 0 player game. :P

Also, the white bear
/me runs
/me hopes someone will make that a thing, and the associated hashtag will be #TheWhiteBear

White Bear: Contest Edition? Though thats a bit late now :P
You would have to find a white bear in a snowstorm or something :P

What is that white bear thing about? I searched Google and Know Your Meme and found no relevant result... ???

That's because it's not a thing...yet :P

It's apparently a game Leo Tolstoy used to play: to stand in a corner and not think of the white bear. What white bear, I'm unsure of.

I remember someone mentioning that a couple of years ago. You're not allowed to think of a snowbear for five minutes. The problem is that you have to think about the snowbear to remember not to think about the snowbear. Only if you RAMcleared after being told not to think about snowbears, you win. But you'll probably always lose.

In which year did it came out, though? Because the game arrived on the Internet in 2002 IIRC.

The first known description about "The Game" in its current form WAS in 2002, you're right.
Before that, in 1987, Daniel Wegner performed studies on thought repression and ironic process theory, showing that if you try not to think about something, it's all you can think about.
Before that, circa 1976, the Cambridge University Science Fiction Society made a game where if you think about Finchley Central, you lose.
Before that, that same year, John Conway made a game called "Endgame" where the first person to make a move loses.
Before that, in 1947, Paul Goodman described a game where you must not think of a pink elephant.
Before that, in 1863, Fyodor Dostoyevsky said in one of his works, "Try to pose for yourself this task: not to think of a polar bear and you will see that the cursed thing will come to mind every minute."
Before that, circa 1840, Leo Tolstoy describes a game he used to play with his brother where they must "stand in a corner and not think of the white bear... but could not possibly manage, not to think of the white bear."

Game, set, MATCH.

I may have lost it, I'm not sure. I think it's still in my calc, but I sort of hit a wall with detection of the snake length. Haven't coded in ages, so I don't know if I can even work on it anymore.
