Title: Userbar Tips and Tricks and Backgrounds
Post by: DarkestEx on April 26, 2015, 08:27:35 PM
Hello,
I hope you noticed that I redid my signature.
It now contains links to all sorts of platforms.

If you like them, and want to make them for yourself, here are some tips:

Use this site to manage and create the captions:
userbars.removedfromgame.com (http://userbars.removedfromgame.com/index.php)

Space the text out and center it.
Align the bars in coumns.
Make your own bars, by coping the sample backgorund and replacing the images with 18x18px logos.

And here are some userbar backgrounds that I made (the first one is stolen from the background of this site):

Yeah I like that site for userbars. The one in charge used to be Omni staff back when I was admin there too. The only issue is that sometimes the entire text will be pitch black. It doesn't happen all the time, though.

I should redo some userbars for myself. I had some for Illusiat 13, TotKotM, ADoMH and other things. A CW userbar would be cool.

Am I the only one who think that those CW banners should be green? :P (like the affiliate button or the forum bars, that is)

By the way, I logged in into my RFG account and found my old userbars:

I also had this from longer ago:

Cemetech also made plenty of userbars back then: http://www.cemetech.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1040&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

EDIT Here are some CW userbars I made:

I guess you might want to use the CW staff one since it's your primary group. I'll try to make some for the contest when I get some time (although I'll also create badges or even smaller userbars as badges so that winner profiles got a badge by default.)

Yes, but you totally spelled Check wrong there :P (and you might want to fix punctuation in that second sentence :P)

Oh I see. :P Just making sure. But of course I hope you don't write it like this in a project showcase topic or readme in the future. :P

My concern though is that the color is green, a little like the staff bars. I am unsure if using an Elite Spammer bar would be a good idea on other forums, because it might make some people jump to the conclusion that CodeWalrus is a spam site. <_<

Yeah, I don't want to be broadcasted as an elite spammer unless this is on this site. :P

Yeah, also the definition of "spammer" might vary per person...

Mine are uploaded to usersbars.removedfrimgame but I keep the background and the source files (Gimp) on my side because I can still edit them. I made a template which helps me keeping the same style over my numerous bars. Once I get back in my laptop I could give it to you.

Well, when it refers to a person it often refers to flooding, unless the person only has like 20 posts or is a bot, in which case it refers to blatant advertising.

Or really short posts that mean nothing and increase word count like this one.

So yeh,yeah, yeah! and stuff.
Title: Re: Userbar Tips and Tricks and Backgrounds
Post by: Snektron on May 06, 2015, 08:32:41 AM
Well i just refer to it as "a lot of messages". Those can be useful or just junk, so im a bit looser in that i suppose

My definition of spammer is someone who posts unnecessarily, usually not adding anything to a conversation. So basically this post and most of the posts in the off topic section.

Post by: Snektron on May 06, 2015, 12:00:38 PM
Well thats waht the off-topic section is for, isnt it? :P

Yes and no ( this part is opinion so don't really take it seriously unless the staff agree ), there are a surprising amount of 6 word posts which are usually spammy. Generally I think of most posts with less than a complete sentence ( excluding punctuation because who really cares about the period to finish a thought ) spam but if they add something to the thread ( like a picture in the pictures thread ) or ask a serious question ( maybe even joking question in a funny thread ) then it isn't spammy. Since these are pretty broad posts should be given benefit of the doubt.

Also staff if you disagree then you can edit that out.

Nah, I agree your point. Therre has been too much offtopic or short posts these last days I won't block you talking but please try to increase the quality of your posts, it's not about the quantity or trying to match DJ's post count, it's more about giving feedbacks, detailled criticism or just plain offtopic, do what you want but try to lower the pace of few posts, thanks, it just make too much clutter and creating forum pages full of  6-word posts. Thanks.

I don't mind if there are a lot of posts, since, after all, that's what is needed to keep the forum lively, but as mentioned above, short posts that are completely useless should be avoided. Of course, sometimes when you comment on someone's art, project or video, just a short comment will be enough, because in some cases there isn't much else that needs to be said, but when people just reply with "aw yess" in response to posts that have nothing to do with the original topic this isn't a quality discussion.

We know that the younger users usually improve over time so we are confident that everyone will increase their posting quality as time goes by, though. :) I already notice a trend where some members who used to be quite spammy now have around 95-97 good quality posts out of 100 and the ones that used to almost only post 2-3 word posts are slowly posting more and more quality posts (or at least stuff that contributes to the forum), which is good.

Well in some cases i find 3 word post can be made too, for example when you complement people on something they made but don't have any specific questions or critisism etc
Title: Re: Userbar Tips and Tricks and Backgrounds
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 12, 2015, 04:37:50 AM
Yeah I was more talking about when certain users posts like 30 posts without even doing any effort to keep them relevant and non-spammy. At least you in particular improved quite a lot since the early forum days :P (out of 50 posts now there might be one or two that is just something like "aw yuss!" or "w00t!").

Anyway we should probably get back on topic, even though that elite spammer banner kinda started it :P

oh cool! Be sure to share it. Maybe we can have a 4x3 banner too (not a banner of 4x3 pixels but a contest banner :P)

Yeah I planned to make some. They'll most likely use one frame of the contest logo thing since some forums disallow animated signatures as well as the C from CW logo. Walrii will probably be there too.I could also use a faded copy of the animation thing but use multiple frames?

EDIT: Large userbars (if I do smaller ones the background will most likely be squished to half its width):

Unfortunately nope, other than either the banners or badges. Future and bigger contests will most likely have more and bigger prizes, though.
