Hardware revisions for video game consoles

Consoles over their lifetime are getting new revisions with often improvements or in some cases downgrades compared to their earlier motherboard. For this thread, I thought I would take a look at several consoles and their hardware revisions. Many of which had been infamous for these and I want first to take a look at the Playstation 3 first.(Next will be the Megadrive/Genesis) Playstation 3 The PS3 had many board revisions with 3 significant ones : "PHAT" models, Slim, and Super Slim. We'll s...

Using Online mode in Phantasy Star Online (Gamecube version)

Phantasy Star Online, one of Sega's introduction to online multiplayer games on video game consoles and probably one of the first ones.It was renowned for being quite addicting and reviving the series, though in a different route than most expected. The game was first released on the Sega Dreamcast in 2 versions. V1 came out first in late 2000 while v2 came out the year after. It was later ported to the Gamecube as PSO Episode I and II and also to the Original Xbox.It was also ported to Windows fi...

My CFW for the Retrostone

Thought i would share to you this since i've been working on this for a while. What is the Retrostone ? It's a 150$ handled device that aims at being basically a portable emulation machine. It competes with the likes of the LDK/RS-97 on the lower end as well as home made projects like Raspberry pis etc...However, the Retrostone 1 has one major flaw : the screen is composite only due to a Soc hardware limitation.Another issue i had with the device was the firmware itself RetrOrangePi : it's bad.It'...

Here's a port of Killminds, Super Quartet, for the Philips CD-i.This is based upon Frog Feast's source code release by cdoty and plays similarly to the 3DO port. It's a puzzling game  where you must act as quickly as possible to fill one of the 4 slots with a piece of a square given to you. I've played it on my own CD-i 220 and recorded it here :[url= ...

Wal-Rush! PICO-8

Not sure if the PICO-8 technically counts as a "console", but I've decided to post this in the "consoles" section...I'm developing a game for the PICO-8, a video game console that does not actually exist. And because Wal-Rush! for the NES does not exist , I thought I would create what I wished a full console version of Wal-Rush! could be...You can view my progress so far in this thread: ...

Hardest platforms to program/work for ?

I thought i would share my experience with some of the platforms i've had to deal with and the most horrible ones i had to work with. Atari Jaguar Why use a single lame Motorola CPU that is not even 32-bits while use two 32-bits RISC processors as co-processors ?And it is just the beginning. For example, the memory controller cannot execute code out of ROM : you must load your game's code in RAM in its entirety. Then there's the unusual way the Atari Jaguar draws graphics : It is not a frame...

My own custom firmware for the RS-97

Hello guys,Last month, two people have donated to me 2 RS-97, a chinese knockoff console with an Ingenic JZ460 SoC clocked at 600Mhz with a horrible screen of 320x480. (but with an aspect ratio of 4:3, kind of like the much infamous CR4 Ti-nspire...)Anyway, after working almost a week on it, i have released a custom firmware for it using buildroot & steward's work.It uses musl-libc rather than uclibc, a standard compliant libc library with backward & upward compatibility. Soap Panic NES - English translation [NSFW]

I figured I should put this here, because it might be lost if I don't.This is a full English translation of the NES game Soap Panic. (Basically, it's the Japanese version of Bubble Bath Babes. Google it if you don't know what it is...but in Incognito Mode, of course.) As I cannot legally provide a download for the ROM, attached is the .ips file, which you can patch to "Soap Panic (Hacker) .nes" (make sure it's the one that doesn't have half of its graphics data missing!).Because I know you d...

Graphics-hacking Super Mario Bros.

I had an idea to hack the graphics of Super Mario Bros to change the art style. So far, I'm almost done hacking the graphics for the sprites (and now, I even have some leftover tiles, in case I wanna add something somewhere). These pictures will show my progress, with (almost!) every graphic I've changed. I can't really figure out the title screen format (and it doesn't help that it's stored in CHR-ROM without much breathing room for adding things), so I di...

BasiEgaXorz BASIC compiler for Sega Genesis

I wonder if anybody ever tried BasiEgaXorz from ? I don't have time to learn that BASIC language right now, but I was curious about if it was any good for simple games? I am also curious if it's the same compiler that was used to make Crazybus (otherwise I am curious if that one was released too). If it's reliable, then perhaps it could be handy to port certain calculator games to the Sega Genesis or Mega Drive. Apparently it can even do Sega CD games...

How 3D works on the 3DO... ?

For a long time, i was wondering how the heck can you do 3D on the 3DO...Looking at the documentation, everything seemed to imply that the CEL Engine inside the 3DO was 2D hardware, rather than 3D...I saw absolutely no references to it supporting polygons in hardware. At first, i thought that all 3D games were software-rendered but the documentation seems to imply framebuffer access is very slowso it can't be that. Then i saw this video on the Sega Saturn (turn on subtitles, he's taiwanese) :[url=...

Many games were made by the Lexaloffle and other communities, so when this console is available, there will already be a very huge game library for it. The onl...

Casio Loopy game console

So in one of TI-Planet's TI-Casiez Vous article, I learned about the existence of the Casio Loopy game console. Yes, Casio actually made a game console before: ;t=18769Apparently it only came out in Japan, only had 10 games and the target audience were girls.  The console definitively failed since they only targeted a then-niche audience and only had a limited game genre range. CHIP-8 emulator

So as some people lurking in IRC already know, I started work on a CHIP-8 emulator a little under a year and a half ago. I just picked it back up a couple days ago, and have made some major progress. It was originally written in C++, and I wanted to first write it for the computer using SDL, and then port it to the Nspire, hence the name "nCHIP-8." The C++ to C conversion was surprisingly easy! So, for quite some time now, I've been using pirating tools on my 3DS XL, but pirating nothing. I basically only use those tools for homebrews and other openness-related things that have nothing to do with piracy. You may think this is stupid, and yes it is, especially considering that this tool is really convenient to use for pirates, but really (read: REALLY) annoying to use for people like me. That's why I considered switching to a new hack that is now out and stable, and that suits my needs ...

Toy Story NES - IPS patch to "fix" typos

I was on a bootlegged-ports-on-NES kick for a while, and I found Toy Story for the NES, presumably made by Ei-How Yang. The game is apparently notable for its many typos, even saying "TOY SOTRY" at one point. I was able to find 2 ROMs of this game, but one of them doesn't work on FCEUX for some reason. The one that DID work, however, had none of them. So, I tried to bring all the typos back. I only have 3 comparison screenshots: 2 pre-level Etch A Sketch texts and "TOY SOTRY". I'm terrible at th...
