Title: Star Wars Episode VII, who's going?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on December 05, 2015, 08:08:43 PM
I know that a lot of geeks are more trekkies than Star Wars fans and a lot prefer Episode IV through VI, but I was wondering if anyone is going to watch Episode VII? I'm personally thrilled, since it has been a while since the last movie and I'm curious if Disney have done it well or not, so I'm definitively going to see.

I was personally not as much into episode I, even if I still liked it a bit.

One thing, though: At some point I want to rewatch the entire series thoroughly. Should I watch them from I to VII, I-III and IV-VII, skip III or a different order?

I'll be going to see it. I recently watched all the films in one sitting in the Machete Order (http://www.nomachetejuggling.com/2011/11/11/the-star-wars-saga-suggested-viewing-order/) except that I didn't skip Episode I. It was a pretty good order for watching it.

I personally don't see why so many people despise Episode I actually. I feel it's not as great, but it's not bad either. I'll be sure to watch it again if I do a Star Wars marathon. But before the marathon I will most likely watch VII at the theater. Sadly it will most likely be 3D, thus, cost an extra $3 x.x for usually 1% of 3D, but I guess being able to watch it on the largest screen in the theater will offset this.

I've bought my tickets for a while now (end of October), and I'll be in France this part of December, so I'll be watching Episode VII December 16th on before 11am, which is quite a bit before anyone in America :P
I'll spoil you all mwahahahaha

I prefer episodes 1 to 3 rather than the oldies which aged quite much (like for Tron legacy vs the older Tron). The new Star Wars episode will certainly be good-looking and probably a great film but there are too much advertisement and derived product for it, so I won't go for watching it, at least not when I'm sure it will be crowded at the cinema...

Yeah I noticed they were trying to create hype for so long. Every week there is so much hype since September that I always think the movie is being released next Friday.

As for Episode 1, I read some info about it and it looks like some people hate it because it's irrelevant to the rest of the series. Others dislike it because there are not enough spaceship battles it seems.

Also, when Episode 1 came out, afterward we kept hearing non-stop about it and they were making pretty much anything out of the film, such as Star Wars LEGO models, underwears, c, video games, food, etc. I hope it won't be 100 times worse this time, because they'll just annoy people over time and they won't care as much about Episode VIII if it comes out soon after VII.

Heh, gotta watch every Star Wars movie, and I'm not skipping Episode I. And if I'm watching them all, better go hardcore and watch the Holiday Special as well.
Title: Re: Star Wars Episode VII, who's going?

Wait, what was the Holiday Special? Was it some sort of spin-off or smaller movie? Or do you mean they'll air movies on TV during the next holidays?

Either I-VI or IV-VI then I-III. Definitely don't skip III though, it's the best movie of all 6. Episode IV didn't really age well imo, but I love them all. Definitely going to watch VII, hoping they didn't turn it into crap. Star Wars is one of my favorite universes. ^_^

The infamous Star Wars Holiday Special was an direct-to-TV movie that aired only once in 1979 (about a year after Episode IV) on CBS and CTV, it was so bad (more so bad it's good, actually) even George Lucas tried to destroy every copy of it after its airing.

Would it be necessary to view all other movies to be able to follow this one? Star wars seems interesting, but I haven't watched any movie of it yet, and since the first movies are quite old iirc, it may be hard to get into.

You haven't seen any star wars movies O.O

You have to see them before you see VII ;)

You will still enjoy this movie even if you didn't watch the others I think. It's just better to watch them all I think to know more about each characters, plus all of them are enjoyable IMHO, especially the old ones.

I personally watched I and II entirely, but the last time I watched the old ones was when I was kid so I forgot some stuff, and back then I was exposed to Star Trek more than Star Wars on TV. I recorded the old ones on VHS in 2002 but I mostly skimmed through them and I overwrote part of them due to running out of tape back then.

Also, if you have the chance, you should watch the old movies in their original unaltered version. Definitively a different experience and some people actually prefer those (aside from the crappy sound lol)

From what I could see, Star Trek is more exploration-oriented than Star Wars in general. Even the games are just exploration in general. Overall, not the same style anyway. They just can't be compared.

The $5 thursdays promotion will not apply for this movie, though.

In any case, it seems that the consensus so far in general is that it's better than the prequel trilogy and it brings back the old style overall, while incorporating modern special effects among traditional effects.

Lol awesome XD. It's true that both movies are similar, though. It seems like they tried very hard at bringing back the old movie style. :P

Seriously, though, after watching Episode VII it's hard to enjoy Episode I much. It's just too different. The pod race was kinda cool, though, and I recommend the Nintendo 64, Dreamcast or PC game Star Wars: Episode 1 Pod Racer :P

Also think twice before sharing spoilers to people IRL, especially if you live in USA O.O http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/film/75392951/us-death-threat-alleged-over-star-wars-spoiler

Just watched it, i am afraid to admit i liked the prequels better. Unlike Episode 7, the prequals had a mutch better/more interesting story, albeit one poorly directed/acted out <_< Episode 7 was just too cliche with the rebells having to blow up a third death star. Also han dies witch is like meh. There are somany questions also about the events that happened between 6 and 7, like how did han loose his ship, and how lukes lightsaber ended up with that weird alian women <_<

The thing with Episode 7 is that those who wrote the story and made the movie were pretty much walking on eggs. Episode 1 through 3 got a lot of backlash from fans, so instead of trying something new once again, they switched back to the old style, which inevitably resulted into a movie similar to Episode 4. I like the final result, though, but I can understand that some people might have liked more diversity.

Yeah, but I most disliked that George Lucas approved the Expanded Universe and Disney did nothing to continue what George wanted to happen. That is why I don't like the movie <_<

I am not very familiar with the Expanded Universe. It seemed rather grand in scope. I really enjoyed Episode 7, though, and I imagine that what was released was at least as good as an adaptation of some already-published stories.

I also heard discussions in French on whether "Jedi" would be masculine or feminine: "Le dernier Jedi" (masculine form) or "La dernière Jedi" (feminine form) or even "Les derniers Jedi" (plural form), or why not "Les dernières Jedi" (plural + feminine form)? Some may also argue the masculine form can be used even though said Jedi would be a woman. Anyway, some languages have no gender-neutral form as in English (or the gender-neutral form is also the same as the masculine form), so I think they may as well translate this to something else completely, as countless movies did before.

Yeah same. I don't know if you mean in the same ways as me, but I hope it doesn't mean that Luke will die or something D:. Hopefully the title just means that one Jedi really stands out from the others or is just clickbait. Also in French, the 6th movie title was Le retour du Jedi, which is Return of the Jedi in its singular form.

Unless the French title was mistranslated (which I doubt would have been left as is, considering how they altered the original movies in their rereleases in 1997), then it was refering to one Jedi in particular. There was a Wikipedia page in French saying that the French title was Le Dernier Jedi, but the title is not official yet and the page has been deleted.

I hope it won't be like episode VII, which was great as a 2010's blockbuster, but really bad as a Star Wars movie. In comparison, Rogue One was fantastic.

There was a fake Star Wars text crawl for Episode 8 on Facebook earlier that was basically the sentence "I hope Luke doesn't die." repeated over and over until the end. Also something strange is that the Star Wars logo for this film is red instead of yellow, so far O.O

Also yeah I loved Episode VII but Rogue One was definitively better.

Yeah in French too, kinda like most proper nouns (eg Les Plouffe instead of Les Plouffes). You can tell it's plural from the usage of "Les" instead of "Le", though, unlike in English where "The" is used for both plural and singular.

In many languages such as French, Spanish and German, if the noun have the same form in gender and in number, the pronoun and the adjective are still conjugated, while it just doesn't happen in English.

Ars Technica (https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/02/star-wars-the-last-jedi-its-definitely-plural/) explains it a bit here.
