Title: Zelda remade in voxels
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on April 04, 2016, 05:01:35 PM
I just tried this and this looks amazing O.O
http://zelda30tribute.com/

It's a 30th anniversary fan tribute of Zelda for the NES, made in voxels.

That's cool! And fun! :D
Even my x61s with a crappy graphics card, it runs pretty fast.

Well, voxels are designed to run on old machines in general. There's actually a voxel engine for the TI-89.

Nice!
Took me a moment to figure out which keys were A and B
Ran perfectly on a Dell Chromebook 11...
But I don't know what I'm supposed to do  :P

Yeah, I first played it on mobile so they showed a virtual NES pad at the bottom. I bet it's not the full game, so perhaps you can't do that much. If it's completed, though, then just get the sword in the first cavern first. The early Zelda games can be confusing for people used to newer games, since you usually start in the middle of nowhere with no clue. And some are poorly translated.

I never really figured out the early Zelda games, you can go in those caverns and get items because it's dangerous to go alone, then where are you supposed to go? Anyway, nice remake here.

Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on April 05, 2016, 04:37:30 AM
Yeah, back in the days, the game story was usually put before the title screen if you waited long enough for it to scroll, then when hitting start you started instantly with no intro. You really had to search. Even Final Fantasy 1 was like that back then.

I got the sword, then couldn't figure out how to use it, so I gave up. :P

You just press the attack button. :P

EDIT: It seems to be spacebar. I don't know what is the button for the 2nd item, though. Anyway the game isn't complete because you can buy items for free and they don't work.

Post by: Dudeman313 on April 05, 2016, 08:23:28 PM
Thanks for that. Now I can continue playing! :D
Do you know if there's a shortcut for the [Start] key?

And I'm guessing you are allowed to get those first three items for free because there's no way to get coins b4 you get them.

I wonder if I could create a non-semi-educational game section on my website so I could add embed this into my site? Of course, I'd have to have some way to contact the creators first, unless it's open-source.

It seems to be, on computers, X for A, Z for B.

The game also states at the top that you can use K for A and L for B, but I want to know the [Start] key.

@DJ Omnimaga , where did you find this? I want to know if I can put it on my site.

Weird, those keys didn't work for me. I guess it depends of the OS, system and browser.

K and L won't do anything for me. Start is Enter.

As for putting it on your site, I found it in the URL I posted in the first post. I am betting this will be gone at any moment (as soon as Nintendo notices, basically, then send the author a DMCA notice), so we probably won't have enough time to find a way to download the game demo to be played offline, sadly. There was a Unity remake of the first stage in Super Mario 64 a while ago, but it was taken down after just a few weeks for copyright infrigment. (Nintendo seems to care more when the game is either sold, is a remake of one of their existing games or includes the original music)

Thanks!
The top of the screen lists 2 keys for both B and A. I'm not sure why they don't work for you.  :-|

I'll just exclude it, then.

This is pretty neat. The perspective seems a bit weird though. Sometimes, I was able to strike enemies when I didn't think I was close enough, and other times I got  hit by enemies when it looked like they weren't close enough.

Very nice DJ Omnimaga. Thank you very much for this great finding :)
A very accurate 3D adapation of the original game graphics. :D

Only the first 3 of the 8 dungeons seem to be playable for now.

With dungeons #4 and above, you get this demo warning :

You may still explore the 5 last dungeons, but everything (treasures and monsters) is just flat and still tiles - you can't interact with them and thus can neither win nor lose.

You also get a similar warning with many secrets related to those dungeons on the world map.

If you still want to play Zelda in 3D, hurry up...

Nintendo has just requested for the game to be removed from the Internet.

I think it's a stupid move of them. If that even affects their sales, then in a positive way. This way they ruin their fanbase - it's not the first time they take such things down.
Basically, it's like TI trying to ban ndless - and maybe even a little bit more pointless than them.

I doubt it, considering most clones of their games have been available on ticalc for years without any problems. I think part of the issue with this Zelda clone is that it's basically a remake of an existing Nintendo game. I wish there was a download available for someone to initiate the Streisand (sp?) effect.

It's very slow as you'll have to wait for all images/sounds to load, but the game was saved on the web archives :

Then save all files to a local folder, like I did. ;)

The game runs perfectly, but only if I browse the folder through a local web server (on 127.0.0.1).

Yeah, I meant an actual download link, though, so I could play it offline (even if that copy gets taken down too). Unless there's a way to download the file, such as by checking the page source and grabbing an URL from there.

Anyway I'll try to see if I am able to save the game locally.

Maybe the engine could be re-used for a Reuben 3D port? :P

I think I've saved everything locally.
But for some reason, the game requires to be run through a web server. It doesn't work by just opening the html file.
I don't have time to check and fix. I've just installed the easyPHP web server on the local 127.0.0.1 IP and it works. :)

Darn, that sucks. To be honest this is why I tend to not be a fan of online softwares as much as I am a fan of standalone ones. Not only we have to get online to use the software (or in this case, run it through a server), but also if the site shuts down forever, then the software is gone forever too. This is what happened to that amazing Axe Parser tilemap and sprite editor by Aichi in 2011 or so. Basic Guru tutorial at least was saved because a copy was uploaded on ticalc.org way before the site closed.

Anyway, to save the game on my PC, do I just need to save the page as complete page (images, html, etc.)? Or do I need a special software?

There are lots of files which are only accessed through the scripts.
So unfortunately, just saving the page from your browser won't be enough.
You need either to have a look at the source code, either to use special tools.

But here's some help.

Get the main HTML file from the web archives.

Then, get the following files, either from the web archives either from the original website :

Wow, that's a lot of files O.O Although it makes sense for a 3d game. Even though it got taken down relatively quickly after I saw this post, I still had fun with my 5 minutes of Zelda 1 (and even forgot that I had to get the sword first :P )

I started doing this as soon as I saw the Facebook post about Nintendo.
Thanks for the advice. I'll see if I can find a quick way to grab those in time.

I already have them backed up locally. :3 Wrote a bash script to scrape them off archive.org.

Great :)
Did you manage to make them work locally without needing to setup a local web server ?

By the way, I reached last dungeon #9 today :

But unfortunately, the stairs don't work and thus I couldn't explore very far.

Yeah I don't think any stair works in the game. I could venture far away on the map, though, but I keep dying since it can be hard to control on a phone or keyboard.

I hope they re-release this with different music and voxel models. It would rule. Or if the engine isn't too hard to modify, maybe someone could re-use it for a voxel remake of Reuben Quest? :P

Stairs in dungeons #1 and #3 do work.
No stairs in dungeon #2.
Stairs on the map and in other dungeons don't work at all or don't work properly.

@DJ Omnimaga , I feel like you knew I'd see this and take it as a challenge. :P
If you can give me the coloured Reuben you posted somewhere on Omnimaga and a size, I can make a test-sprite. :)

It was here in the first place, I just thought it was on Omnimaga for some reason.
I was looking for the "Some Reuben Quest art (https://codewalr.us/index.php?topic=13.msg78#msg78)" thread.
@DJ Omnimaga , do you want a specific size?

Well I made a test sprite. Here we go:

That does indeed sound like a fun challenge (though I unfortunately don't have enough time to try it). They said they're going to put the source on GitHub soon (but without the Zelda assets), so it may be quite easy to modify the engine to make Reuben Quest.

Alright! I already started working on a walking animated version of my 3D Reuben, so maybe at some point, it could be done. :D
Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on April 08, 2016, 11:37:30 PM
By the way, if I was to remake Reuben on a faster language such as HP PPL, I might be tempted to turn it into an action-adventure game rather than turn-based RPG. That would mean some larger enemies would be removed, but I think it would be less repetitive since Reuben only had 4 magic spells and 1 attack move.
Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels
Post by: Dudeman313 on April 09, 2016, 07:52:16 PM
You could add more and maybe even a "choice" element. Some RPGs let you choose the dark side if you wanted.
Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on April 10, 2016, 06:06:30 AM
Elements might be nice. That's what I planned for First Fantasy II (you would get elemental protection when equipping certain magic). But it might be better to keep an ARPG simple to start with, plus maybe some enemies could use different spells. Fire could become fire balls, lightning could be replaced with laser shots, regular attacks would be removed (you would lose HP when touching the enemy) and the other spells would also become projectiles or something.

Post by: Dudeman313 on April 11, 2016, 10:21:56 PM
Though that's not what I meant(I've got to work on clear descriptions), that is also a great idea.
What I meant to say is that some RPGs (I can't remember where I saw this) allow you to choose, by your actions, follow the path of good or evil.
Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on April 21, 2016, 06:44:48 PM
Oh right. Some games actually have one story but that can be seen from one character's perspective or the other. Sometimes, one is the good guy and the other the bad guy, but other times you just choose a different character. Also, in older RPGs I remember where you had to answer various questions at the start in order to create your hero.
Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels
Post by: Dudeman313 on April 21, 2016, 07:43:52 PM
The game I'm referencing was one where you got to chose whether or not to help certain people or fight for different sides in quests.

Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels
Post by: Dudeman313 on April 21, 2016, 09:29:50 PM
No, but that sounds cool.

Example: At the beginning, the character was a small boy, and some soldiers were fighting this evil lady that was there when she and the other evil dudes were murdering the boy's father, and you can choose to help her or not.

Yeah I think I know the type of games. But I can't remember any from the 90's that had a similar style. All I know is that this sounds like something that would appear in games like Fable, Skyrim and MMORPGs.

I'm not surprised. I bet torrents or mirror sites exists, though. I think @Streetwalrus might know some :P

Also Miitomo caused an uproar because they block rooted devices.

Yeah, as mentioned above. That said, we know a secret location I think. But it could go down at any moment. I think the best thing to do to avoid legal issues is that people just record gameplay and put it on Youtube in HD, or put it on torrents.

That said, I still wish the game was remade in a way that didn't require being hosted on a server or something.

Also, we still have that 3D Nes emulator thing that can probably do the job well with some games.

EDIT: It's now on Github apparently. h t t p s : / / github.com/scottlininger/zelda30tribute

For now, at least. Maybe Nintendo won't be fine with them redistributing their graphics and music in such project either. What I think is that they'll eventually have to change the models and music and remove Zelda references from the game.

Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels

ROFL that would be funny if it happened. I doubt they would be willing to remake a game this obscure, though.
Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels

But if they did, we could make a million different ports, and soon everyone will know about it!

Just make sure Reuben doesn't say "Hi-ya!" every time he swings a sword.
Title: Re: Zelda remade in voxels
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 09, 2016, 05:51:34 PM
Yeah true. It would definitively be cool if Reuben was more known some day, although probably as a combination of both games. :P Or it could be a brand new game on a new platform but with the original areas revisited.
