I'm gonna try to use that. I'd start by recreating @alexgt 's Iron Walrii, because his eyes aren't hard to do.

I didn't bother, because it had no option to import a PNG as a layer. I wish it did, so I could start with something.

Also another issue I am wondering about is how would the outline be done?

I am just really bad at making cool models, I am good at making functional things but they look horrible :P

I got permission to use the school's 3D printer (MakerBot Replicator 5th gen apparently), so I'm probably going to try printing a phone case for my brother's phone (the one he currently uses is basically 90% tape by now  <_< ).

[spoiler=I even made a drawing of the phone (some Huawei, I don't know the exact model number) itself as an easy reference]

(I know that the measurements weren't drawn at the best locations, but this did the job for me)

Just using tape works 100% of the time  ;)
Some questions:

  • What phone model is it for?
  • Are you getting paid for doing it

Always print things you can get money from. I have a friend who's selling custom phone cases for $10 each. :P
Also, can you print CE cases? I'd do that if I had a 3D printer.

It's a Huawei. I have no idea which model though, I'm not exactly a smartphone expert.

No, I have to learn how to work with a 3D printer for my internship so I was just looking for something useful to print :)

I probably could if I had a CE to measure. I haven't actually printed my phone case yet though, so idk how my cases will turn out yet :P

If there is Ninja-Flex available to you then use that, it will make the case super resilient.

I tried 3D printing a case for my N-spire but it turned out horribly <_< I was only starting to learn about printing and it was my 4th print, it sucked because I used ABS instead of PLA which made it warp a ton, I also made there be infill so the slots where the calc slides down were impossible to clean xD.

I wish you luck ;)

KermMartian 3D-printed custom TI-84 Plus C SIlver Edition cases in the past IIRC. They looked kinda cool actually. Something I wonder, by the way: WHen you use a cheap 3D printer, is the size of the 3D-printed model accurate or do you need to scale it up or down a bit to match the original object?
u/alexgt February 19, 2016, 09:40:58 PM
Well, it depends on how much you have calibrated it, if you are like me and are very lazy then it won't be calibrated super well so your prints like mine will not be the best. However they are good enough for me. I can upgrade it and stuff but I don't have enough money for than xD

Is a 3D printer hard to calibrate?
u/Dudeman313 February 27, 2016, 03:20:56 AM
I think it's just time-consuming. My friend, who's a :ninja: , and is also pretty rich, has several of them. He's getting one with a super fine nozzle.
I also might get one for my 13th b-day on March 31! ;D
u/Dream of Omnimaga February 27, 2016, 05:28:02 AM
Personally, if I was rich, I would probably get multiple 3D printers that don't necessarily cost a fortune and are small enough, so I can create stuff in bulk. I wouldn't have the patience to take several hours a day to print 3D objects one by one.

Also I hope you can get one :)
u/Dudeman313 February 27, 2016, 06:35:09 AM
Me too :D.

He said he had a big printer and a smaller one, but is getting the ultra fine one for small projects. He also said that it's so fine that a single baby block cube half the height of an unsharpened pencil would take 5 hours to make! I don't have that patience, but when I get Microsoft's 3D Builder app that came with Windows 10 figured out, I'll recreate my current Walrii and steve art to 3D figures, and make a stand for my the gift I gave my mom for Christmas.

I haven't really used it for something useful personally, but I don't think the 3D builder really is a worthy CAD tool.
I think Google Sketchup has a free version, and Autodesk Inventor also has free 3-year student licences (though it can be harder for you to obtain one). You can also look for other tools yourself, just make sure that the tool you use is a CAD tool and not a modelling tool.
