Title: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: alexgt on February 09, 2016, 07:44:03 PM
My sister showed me this site (http://www.freecodecamp.com), FreeCodeCamp and it looks really cool so I started on it.

I wanted to see if anyone else used it, if not you might want to start on it ;)

Yeah, it says somewhere that it takes over 2000 hours to complete on average O.O

But if you complete it all you will be put on a list for employers to see ;)

2000?! How did some people finish it in like half a year? They would be doing this more than 10 hours a day o.o

I would love to do that to, but I only know one coder, owner of a CE, who is an expert coder and also a :ninja: .  Also. my mom doesn't let me go over to friends houses anymore, unless they invite us, she know 3 days in advance, and she has met their parents.

I haven't really looked into it that much, but what languages can you learn from it?

I didn't pay attention when they were listed, but I'm currently working on HTML and CSS.

I think its just web developement in general, so probably HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL. Other than that a few libraries like Bootstrap.js, React.js , D3.js and Node.js (basically the hipster web dev libraries - surprised jquery isnt there).

I'm having trouble with the tribute page. I'm kinda lazy, but I also have other HW to do, so maybe I'll get back to it. It's kinda difficult to be plagued by 8th grade HW and still go to a university.  :-\

Sorry to hear, I got done with it a week or two back and this is the link: http://codepen.io/alexgt/full/zrewPr/. You can look at code from that, it isn't against the rules I think, but it isn't perfect.

Right now I am on the portfolio which you can find here: http://codepen.io/alexgt/pen/bpNpwz. but as of now it is really lame (a singe button).

I will take a look since I myself am not done with my portfolio. This is my portfolio: https://codepen.io/alexgt/full/MyOKgw/

EDIT: First of all you should move all your CSS code in the style tag into the CSS window.

EDIT 2: And also I would make your own style sheet or make all the CSS in that page so it is not hosted by w3-schools ;)
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: Dudeman313 on May 20, 2016, 12:59:00 PM
That's really cool! ;D

I'll move my CSS, but how do I make a style sheet?
Also, I'd have to find the colors I used.  :-|
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: alexgt on May 20, 2016, 03:11:03 PM
To make a style sheet you have to have a website and upload a style sheet to use it on any page. To make it you just have a file with the <style></style> tags and host it on your website. But moving your CSS to the CSS window will be sufficient.
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: Dudeman313 on May 20, 2016, 05:12:13 PM
I don't have a website, but I guess I could make one with Google Sites. :)

How do I host it on the site, and how do I use it afterwards?
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: alexgt on May 20, 2016, 05:36:39 PM
Well, I don't have a website either so I am not an expert on that but you can put all your CSS in codepen and Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V it into your other pens
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: Dudeman313 on May 21, 2016, 03:12:02 PM
Oh. Yeah, I could do that too.

Thanks. Should I put an actual picture of myself on it, or no? I was thinking about that...

And also, even though I've removed w3 stuff, the thing is still too long... :(

Well it is up to you if you want a picture on there since it is completely public, you don't even need an account to see pens, personally I wouldn't but that is just my opinion.

and if you are worried about length of your CSS, don't be just so long that it is readable

Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 24, 2016, 07:03:45 PM
If the picture is public then you should ask permission to your parents in case.

By the way do you know about how much percentage of FreecodeCamp you have completed @alexgt and @Dudeman313?
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: Dudeman313 on May 24, 2016, 07:58:24 PM
I probably will just exclude the picture.

And I don't know what percent complete; I just know that I've done very little compared to everything else.
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 24, 2016, 09:24:50 PM
Ah ok. I was wondering because I think @alexgt said it would take him 2 years to complete, but I was curious about if his estimate was accurate so far (although it can be hard to tell, even with a new estimate, because maybe the last parts of FreeCodeCamp will be much harder.)
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp
Post by: alexgt on May 25, 2016, 03:17:03 AM
I was saying 2 yrs if I dropped everything and started working on it non-stop. And that hasn't happened :P. It is a very extensive course and I am just on the 2nd large project (mostly because I am slower at web development since I am not totally used to it yet and I try to make it perfect and do more stuff than the instructions xD).

I just have 141 activities done out of a lot more than 141 so I am probably 2% done (maybe a little more) :P

EDIT: Actually I just used the scroll bar as a rough percentage and it looks like about 30%. Though 2% is probably more accurate of you factor in difficulty :P

YEah I think 2 years in such case would probably have bored you out of your mind if you had no more time to socialize, program, game, etc >.<

I wonder why they made it so long O.O (I hope it's still valid in 10 years or so)
Title: Re: FreeCodeCamp

I don't know why they made it that long but it teaches you quite well ;)

Maybe it's not necessarily meant to be completed by most people who try it and is just for you to learn a bit of extra stuff.

True but you do get on a list that employers can see upon completion

I was sure that FRC robotics only lasted through the Winter and Spring including the tournaments? Either way, good luck and hopefully this Summer you have extra free time for coding, CW, FreeCodeCamp and playing games. :3=

FRC is only during the winter and spring but we work hard off-season too...

And my summer will be more busy than usual sadly <_<

Driver ed? What does ed stand for?

Also don't forget to showcase your FRC robotics stuff in the topic you made a few months ago. I remember you posted a picture of your robot once but the link gave a 404 not found D:

If I do find time, I will be able to do stuff. There is a 7 day break between Earth Science and the last day of 8th grade, which is Wednesday.
