Title: Staff Announcements - January '15
Post by: aetios on January 18, 2015, 08:02:31 PM
Hey everybody, report from your staff here!

It's been a few weeks since we launched, and I hope everyone has been enjoying it so far here. We're always looking for points to improve so if you have any ideas, post them. You might just have this epic idea that we never thought of!

In the few weeks since we launched, we've already gone through a few changes:
-pimathbrainiac has resigned from his staff position, because he's very busy with regular life and he told us he can't have the additional weight of running a site. He said he'll still be doing the Project Periodical. Good luck with everything pimath!

-To fill up the free spot caused by pimath's resigning, Eiyeron has been promoted to the moderator position. This means he can ban people and generally be annoying help running the site, so if streetwalrus is being annoying again a spambot attack happens, you can poke him and he'll probably fix it (if he doesn't, poke me and I'll stab him)

-Finally on staffing, I (aeTIos) have been promoted to admin again (I stepped down before opening due to not really knowing anything about server/forum management), because I'll be managing forum backups.

Next on the list is the Elite Coder badge. This badge is awarded if you have a promising project and can show substantial progress. If you become Elite Coder, you get a subforum in the Featured Projects board, plus eternal fame! (your mileage may vary).

While writing this, I suddenly realize that giving an "elite coder" badge for a hardware project is weird. Maybe we need an "elite electronics engineer" badge of sorts. Hmm. Gotta discuss this with staff ^_^
Recently, Eiyeron has been awarded the Elite Coder badge. His subforum hasn't been realized yet, but we'll try to get it running by the end of the week :D

Now, some of you also have promising projects. If you think you and  your project are awesome enough to get a subforum and eternal fame (ymmv), you can apply in the comments section below with:

1) the project you want to apply,
2) a short explanation of recent progress,
3) a short summary of what your goals are with this project.

Don't hesitate to apply, no application is wrong. If you feel like applying in public is bragging, you can also PM me your application.

The staff's decision will be published in thenext Staff Announcement on Saturday, the 14th of February. If by then your project doesn't have enough progress to be considered major, fear not: we will be running hiring rounds very frequently.

All in all, we're really happy to see so many people posting and generally be useless hang around. Just, we'd love to see a bit less activity in off-topic and more in on-topic ;) Get your project out there, get famous (again, ymmv). Try to make some friends join the party! Remember that even though the main area of activity is currently calculator programming, we're not solely focused on that. Actually, we would like to see some PC/android/somethingelse projects started up, so if you know anyone who has such projects, try to get them to register and help the walrus fly  ^___^

With love~,
Your Staff.

Street needs pink nick and also eiyeron wasnt removed due to pimath leaving as he was promoted before I knew pi resigned :P

I hope pi sticks around tho. Also we originally didn't plan an elite coder badge, as it was added later to give more people the chance of getting such recognition. You can still get a featured project subforum as regular member, just your nick will not be listed with the team and you wont have the elite coder badge.

Anyway some elite coders are pending approval :D

Hehe, I also have that problem. I never released a single thing. Don't give up though. Also backup your stuff might you decide to make something. I lost so many projects due to lost source code x.x

If only you finished Continuity :P

Kidding aside, getting motivation and time simultaneously to code is hard. When I am motivated, I don't have time, and when I have time, I am not motivated (usually due to being exhausted from work and if I am in vacation, I often have other activities like hanging out with friends)

And yes, back up often! tr1p1ea recently lost all his stuff again >.<

thank you a lot for your contributions and for helping CW  to start. You will remain listed as founder/original 5. Btw is nReuben still alive?

Yeah, it is. My computer just got fixed and I can continue progress on nReuben.

Ok good so I'll keep the subforum. aeTIos wanted to make Elite Coder a requirement to get a subforum but I was agains the idea (although they can get a large subforum for their smaller projects )

So each Elite Coder has a subforum for him/herself? NIce!

It depends if it's necessary. Some might just have one massive project and nothing else.
Title: Re: Staff Announcements - January '15
Post by: Yuki on January 19, 2015, 06:36:32 PM
Yeah I don't think it should be a requirement.

If I would need a sunforum, it would need to be composed of multiplea projects (I'll set up a FiXOS compatibility and test gathering soon and a better place for HBE.)
Title: Re: Staff Announcements - January '15

Yeah it generally depends. The criteria to get a sub-forum is much higher if you are not Elite Coder:

-As elite coder, you can get a sub-forum for all your projects (providing that they're good. For example, if you use a sub-forum for Hexagon, but then flood it with dozens of quadratic solvers, then it won't cut it :P), plus extra sub-forums for your much bigger, larger-scale projects.
-As regular member, the only possibility for sub-forums are large-scale projects. For example, Portal CSE and Nspire. Plus your nickname won't be listed on the front page. You still need to be somewhat active, though (if you vanish for several months the sub-forum won't be lasting long)

It's cool to give precisions about the rules to have a sub-forum. You should put it in the rules if you already haven't done it.

My idea mainly was that people with projects as big as this would almost certainly be Elite Coder :P

Here is my official entry for Elite Coder:

This project is Code Zombie. It originally started off as a top down shooter but then I took a break and changed its direction based on upcoming projects.

Progress has been ok. Since the last post I've added in the zombies and modified the engine to run faster. I didn't want to submit anything until I was sure I could match the mockup in my introduction.

Goals:
A map that shows places you can enter like the main base and stores.
Harder/faster zombies in different areas of the map.
Collectible items like food, water, and ammunition.

Mind if I split your project showcase into its own topic, in the projects section? ;)

Also you can apply via private message as well if you want. Of course keep in mind that it can take a while before you get accepted, though, since in your case you vanished for a very long time (and Elite coders are generally added when they average at 10 posts a month or so), but you could have some good chances if you stick around, especially considering you also do non-calc projects. :)

That game looks great, though! O.O

Not sure what happened considering the short time frame. Explanation from @AssemblyBandit would be appreciated so people won't start mass-downvoting the post if it's a joke or something (and if it isn't we do not delete accounts/content without valid reasons anyway)

The site hasn't even been open a month! I don't care for an "Elite Coders" badge that's based off of posts  Come on, that's bogus!
Title: Re: Staff Announcements - January '15
Post by: Yuki on January 26, 2015, 05:50:30 AM
No, not really. It's not based off posts, but on how good your projects are. In the eventuality you're elected Elite Coder, you're expected to be at least a little active on the forums, hence the 10 posts a month thing. (And you already did 10 posts this month, which is about 0.33 posts a day, which is not that much.) It is simply to prevent anyone who isn't active on the forums to be an Elite Coder and encourage them to keep being active and post their progress often.

What Juju said. 10 posts a month is nothing, we just don't want to give that badge to people who don't stick around. I think it's fair to ask for someone to be a little active in return for a position in the community. ;)

@AssemblyBandit I think you have misinterpreted my post up there.

I was saying that it might be best to wait a bit before promoting you because you have just come back from a one-year long hiatus from calc forums, hence why we planned to wait a few weeks or a month to see if you will stick around this time. Elite Coder badges are there to give notable programmers like you more visibility on the website and your projects, but if you end up posting only once a year then the badge won't be that useful. I'm not saying that you will disappear again but in the past 15 years I saw many people come back from long hiatuses, only to leave again a week later (FinaleTI, anyone?), hence why we wanted to see if you would remain around first. Besides, we are adding new Elite Coders in february anyway so it leaves a lot of time to post 10  (which you did now) and it isn't an hard-minimum.

Besides, I don't think it's a valid reason to try starting drama just for something like that, especially not with a ragequit (it's even against the rules).

(Some staff feel free to reword my post if you feel it's misworded. I am literally the worst of all 5 staff at English and by far)

Note that it's not a formal requirement, we just want to make sure you won't dissapear off the map after a while :) We, the CodeWalrus staff (including DJ), are sorry if this causes a misunderstanding. We don't want to cause any drama, nor want anyone to ragequit because of this. (Not that you threatened anything like this but yeah we just want to make sure.)

(I'm rather good at rewording DJ's posts better, that's pretty much what he meant, he don't want you to leave, be inactive nor be angry against him :P)
