Title: The world's first completed TI-89 Zelda project
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on March 03, 2015, 05:50:47 PM
17 years after Texas Instruments released it, the TI-89 finally got a fully complete Zelda clone, playable from the beginning to the end!  :w00t:

Only two finished Zelda games exist for the TI-83 Plus series, which are Zelda: The Hero of Hyrule (http://www.omnimaga.org/files/Old-Calculator-RPGs-Headquarter-Archive/TI-83-Plus-TI-84-Plus-Silver-Edition-RPGs/zeldatheheroofhyrule.zip) and Dark Link Quest (http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/453/45376.html), and they came out in 2004, after many people failed to complete a Zelda project for the TI-83 Plus series. The former uses the ARPGCS engine, is written in French and lacks many elements from Zelda (such as hearts, items, etc), but has very great graphics, Ys-like gameplay and fast speed. The latter was written by me and uses hybrid BASIC language with very old ASM libraries resulting in slowdowns and lower quality graphics, but has most features from older games. This new TI-89 Zelda game is also one of very few 68K game to get released in many years.

^ my thoughts exactly. I've been following this project through its ticalc updates for a while now, it just made me want to play it more and more.

Also, I think there are some TI-89 emulators out there.

Actually I think the guy started from a 2003 project by Jason Ho to port Links Awakening, rewrote it from scratch starting in 2010-11 or so, but it seems to have elvolved into a different game in the end. Maybe LA was just too much for a 68K game or he wanted to make a custom quest instead. Either way, it's really awesome, elaborate and I really need to try it at one point.

This also looks like some newsworthy ticalc.org material. EDIT: I sent them an e-mail.

It's a shame that TI prettyvmuch let the 89T die. On top of that they still charge more than the Nspire CX CAS for it, like if they wanted to keep sales to a minimum to justify an eventual discontinuation.
