Title: TI, HP and Casio emulators list [Casio][HP][TI]
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on March 08, 2016, 07:37:39 PM
Although the file download archives normally only include files posted by the author, we decided to start including lists of useful tools in this section as well because many people seems to be unaware of the existence of many tools and I thought they might find this handy. But to avoid clutter, those software lists will only include softwares for recent calculator models and omit outdated material (older emulators are listed at ticalc.org (http://www.ticalc.org/programming/emulators/software.html)). It will also only include softwares for which binaries are available, since this list is aimed at a mainstream audience rather than only experienced users.

First of all, I'll start with calculator emulation, but we will not provide ROM files or links. Some emulators, such as for the HP Prime, do not require a ROM, though, and others, such as for 68K models, will sometimes run with just an OS file from TI website. For emulators that requires a ROM, ROMs can be acquired from your calculator using ROM dumping softwares such as ROM8x for the TI-83+/84+/CSE (https://www.cemetech.net/programs/index.php?mode=file&id=977) and CEmu for the TI-84 Plus CE (https://github.com/CE-Programming/CEmu).

For TI emulators or simulators that requires purchasing a subscription or a license we are linking to TI-Planet instead of TI website, due to Texas Instruments' inability to keep download links working after a few years.

* https://tiplanet.org/pad_ti68k_emu/ is a much improved version of PatrickD's v11 (which already had several contributions of mine): this one supports all TI-68k models, has more features and fewer bugs :)

* indeed, kArmTI is outdated closed-source software with inferior emulation accuracy.

Thanks for the link. Also I hope to see binaries of CSE TilEm for Windows at some point, so I can link to them.

I also forgot if there is an Android version of Firebird Emu?

I think there is, I know there's an iOS skin at least.

Firebird runs everywhere where Qt is supported and mmap/VirtualAlloc is available, so Android, BSDs, iOS, Linux, OS X, Windows...
It's also not a "TI Nspire CX" emulator, it also emulates classic calcs (Although I don't expect anyone to use that...)

For the trial list, I guess that's going to be only the manufacturer's official things?
So... TINCS, TI-SmartView and Casio Classpad Manager (and wahtever the prizm software is?)

Edit: technically, kArmTI isn't outdated, since IIRC it's based on the latest nspire_emu (which is old but doesn't get new versions since Firebird is its logical successor) and gets updated from time to time... But yeah, its emulation accuracy is not as good as Firebird.

Yeah, trial softwares will be official links to the free (limited) versions of the manufacturers official softwares.

That means the ones you mentioned. I need to find the actual links, though. And yeah I included KarmTI because while it's not as accurate as Firebird Emu, it's nowhere as outdated as Virtual TI.

That reminds me, I also need to include Android and iOS emulators.

Yeah. I know about BluStacks and a few others-adding them to the list is a good idea.
Title: Re: TI, HP and Casio emulators list
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on March 11, 2016, 03:38:20 AM
It depends if they are up to date though. If they are as incompatible as Virtual TI or worse than TI-Smartview, then I might not add them, since I want to make it easy for users and visitors to find something reliable fast and not force them to search through the list. However, what I could do is put them inside spoiler tags.

Also, community emulators in the list must not have the ROM built-in nor available on the server. It has to require the user to provide his own (we tolerate Bootfree-compatible emulators, although we won't tell how to get a ROM in another way than from the real calculator)

EDIT: Updated list!

-Added the Android and Mac versions of KarmTI (although Firebird emu is still recommended for the aforementioned reasons, and it's multi-platform anyway)
-Added z80e to monochrome z80 section
-Added list of paid trial software, but no link available yet.

It's based on nspire_emu 0.50 or 0.60, while the latest version available was 0.71 IIRC.

Yeah I wasn't sure which one it used. From Adriweb's comment, I thought it was already updated to 0.70 or something. But even then, the last update to KarmTI was in September (according to the Omni thread), and OS 4.2 came out just recently.

Hm, I thought it got updated to some more recent nspire_emu. Oh well, if using 0.50 or 0.60, then yeah, it's worse than I thought. The things he improved are on the GUI side, not the core, AFAICS.
(Also, I didn't know about 0.71, I though 0.70 was the latest :P)

@Dudeman313: it's $20 btw.

SpiroH's software is increasingly trailing behind Firebird in terms of features and accuracy, and the choice of a proprietary license is making it hard for him to catch up with the GPL'ed Firebird.

If you can ever install stuff on your own computer, you should get the PC version instead, because it's free.

I can-I'm just more likely to use a handheld device to emulate a handheld device. I hardly use WabbitEmu, even though I'd have an 84+ if I did.

Ah ok. I personally prefer using emulators on the PC since the buttons are so small on a phone, plus file transfer is easier on PC.

I never thought of that, but I guess you're right. I just think I'd rather have the actual device than have to emulate it at all.

Emulators are nice for debugging, though, and savestates plus emulation speed controls can be handy.

Even for fast games it can still help, such as RPGs, for example, where you might want to test if a boss is well-balanced or if a cinematic works, but can't skip.

Or like with unstable games...
I tried testing my stuff on my calculator and often got a RAM clear, which is why I never liked the idea of keeping stuff unarchived on my 84+.
Title: Re: TI, HP and Casio emulators list
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on March 27, 2016, 10:09:47 PM
Yeah, this is why. But of course you have to watch out for archive corruption too.

Oh, by coming soon I was not referring to emulators not being out yet, but rather that the list of paid/shareware emulators was coming soon. But I didn't have time to finish the list yet. :P

It's fine lol. I really need to update that list when I get some time, though. The issue is that TI website uses very strange links so linking directly to the right software versions is hard and I prefer linking to original copies.

Yeah, TI has a weird history with software :P
Title: Re: TI, HP and Casio emulators list
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 14, 2016, 07:21:12 AM
I would say more with how their site is laid out. For example, the TI-84 Plus CE OS URL is https://education.ti.com/en/us/software/details/en/158B7669E4C0493A84D33D9A22FDBD3C/ti-84plusceoperatingsystem and in the past I recall those IDs being replaced or not being the same on every access attempt. I don't know how it works, though. TI-Planet managed to link directly to files before, but TI sometimes removes the files outright (for example, the TI-84+CSE OS was removed from their site recently)
Title: Re: TI, HP and Casio emulators list
Post by: alexgt on May 15, 2016, 01:38:18 AM
Yeah, wish TI was a little more relaxed :(. It is only the small portion of the community that would hack calc for malicious intent <_<
Title: Re: TI, HP and Casio emulators list
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 20, 2016, 06:24:54 AM
I don't think the files removal is due to hacking, but rather because they want to ensure that it's easier to find the latest OSes for the most recent calcs that are still in production. It sucks that CSE users now have to e-mail TI for OS copies and wait for an answer, though (although there are probably other sites that have copies). The removal of older Nspire OSes a few years ago probably had something to do with Ndless and nLaunchy, though.

true, but wouldn't TI-Planet still have those OS's up for download?

Yeah, for now, but it depends if TI minds or not in long terms. Normally, though, TI-Planet links to the original download, but if the link gets broken then it redirects to a mirror copy.

Bump: I updated KarmTI above to mention that it's discontinued, according to this post (https://www.omnimaga.org/ti-nspire-projects/karmti-ti-nspire-emulator-with-skin-16585/msg405039/#msg405039), which doesn't officially state it but "time to move on to other projects" in the TI community means the same thing. The link will remain up for now, as the emulator is still not outdated enough to justify its removal (unlike VTI/Flash Debugger).

I still need to find and add direct (official) download links to the trial versions of paid emulators. That said, I don't feel it's a priority since if we decided to exclude VTI for being outdated or too innacurate, then we might as well exclude TI-Smartview lol.
