So I thought I would cross-post those sprites I posted over the years on Omni so I can also have my portfolio here. You can re-use some of them if you give me credits, but ask me first in case I am currently using them in a project, so that we can avoid having two projects using the same tileset simultaneously, for example.

Make the zelda game happen :O Were the Nemesiat sprites eventually re-used for ROL3? Because some of them look like that.
Hmmm that's a rather large amount of sprites. Nice collection !
Hmmm, would you mind posting some of the colorized sprites here for easy reference? (as of now I have to search omni for them for nReuben)
Thanks guys :D

Yeah sadly the Zelda game stalled because of xLIBC driving my interest away from pure BASIC. It turned out that I kinda lost interest in xLIBC afterward, though. Maybe one day I'll revive the Zelda game, since it didn't seem to run that slow. It was a bit like Zelda on an Atari 5200 or something. As for Nemesiat sprites they were done 4 years after ROL3 release.

I'm planning to post the Reuben stuff in a separate thread actually. I just need to get around hosting them elsewhere if they are not already.

Cool beans! I'd love to have the Reuben sprites in an easy to access place!
Here are some cavern backgrounds I made a few minutes ago. They are mockups of what could be dynamically-generated backgrounds on the Prime:
I'm unsure if the bottom ones or the top ones look better, though. Also I might make them twice larger.
EDIT
(http://img.ourl.ca/cavernbackgrounds-1.png)
Here's a Cave Story screenshot as you could take as reference for improving your cavern tiles ;)
I don't think those particular cavern tiles will be improved for what I want to use them for, because I wanted them to be easy to generate using code (mostly the LINE_P() and RECT_P() commands). Thanks, though!
I'm unsure why I didn't post this here, but this is Walrii including versions with various power ups (I didn't remove the bg logo, tho):
(http://codewalr.us/other/cwwalriiavatar.png)(http://codewalr.us/other/cwwalriiavatars.png)(http://codewalr.us/other/cwwalriiavatare.png)(http://codewalr.us/other/cwwalriiavatarw.png)(http://codewalr.us/other/cwwalriiavatarpowerups.png)
The first is normall Walrii, the second is the spikes power-up (to destroy blocks with his head like Mario), the third is laser eyes (to destroy stuff with your eyes and reach more places), the fourth is a wings power up and the last is Walrii with all power ups. There was also another power up being planned but it's basically Walrii with inverted colors and flashing back and forth.
They can be used as avatars I guess, but on December 13th I am switching to the version that has the site URL in it so I will probably redo them.
Those are really cool! Can I make a Walrii with lobster claws to use as my Omni avatar?

That would look awesome. :D
It would fit more for me. Unless you do a dwarf with lobster claws. :p
Nah man. I'm in the lobster usergroup :P
You could always use such avatar but on December 13th we should probably use a version with the URL in it.
I totally see the thing " I'm not a walrus, I'm a lobster!" :p
That said, if the sprite looks enough, maybe lobster claws could be an alternative to the laser eyes power up to destroy stuff in front of Walrii in the game?
So here's blue lobster Walrii (feel free to edit as you want)
Nice, I like it this way. :)
That looks cool actually. I definitively think it would be better than the other power up, although Walrii will be able to see underwater :P

I'd see a diving mask instead, it would look pretty funny, would just be else a spritesheet or a overlay sprite and -hey! A walrus needs a diving mask to go underwater!
I don't think a walrus needs a diving mask to dive. :P
And that comes the humour! *wink*
I don't understand what you mean. :P
ANyway I notice that the lobster Walrii lacks shading so I might have to add that back. Also the tail is missing :P
EDIT Here it is:
I'd fund and comic. Think of a fish with a diving mask? I'd be curious and bring humour. Same with the walrii diving mask.
I guess that could be humoristic as well. Maybe for a Super Walrii Land 2 since I am keeping power ups to a minimum to get used to HP PPL collision detection and tilemapping.
Not really a sprite, but I made this a while ago in response to OmnomIRC lag, to see if I could make that image display as replacement while Omnom loads:
It's just the CW signature logo with inverted or modified fonts. :P
Haha nice one, I'll ask soru if it's possible to add it. :P
Yeah a loading image or progress bar would be nice
I am unsure if I posted this here before, but here's a few samples of what could be possible using my HP Prime dynamic tile engine:
Hopefully this allows many possibilities without taking too much space.
Nice work! Could your engine make more different sprite patterns?
Thanks! And not at the moment, but I plan to add bricks mode too and the borders can vary depending of the settings. :)
Wow, that's pretty cool DJ. Dynamically generated graphics are awesome
Thanks, and yeah with the HP Prime language speed, it's even better as they are generated instantly with minimal memory usage. I think Columns by Han also uses such sprites.
Soon I'm gonna try to make dynamically-generated clouds and trees , as well as try to render the backgrounds I made using HP PPL. I think in Super Walrii Land only the sky backgrounds will be larger than 32x32, though. Everything else will just be a tiled background.
Do you already have some kind of tilemapper already btw ?
Not yet. It's next on my todo list. :)
Ah ok cool to hear.
This is poor translation by Google Translate, but I was curious about how a Japanese CodeWalrus logo would look like and this is what I got with a literral, Google Translate quality of Programming Walrus:
If someone is able to figure out a good Japanese translation for the following it would be appreciated. :P
"Le morse de la programmation"
"Programming walrus"
"Coding walrus"
"Le morse programmeur"
I posted a translation the other day, it was something like プログラミングセイウチ.
Ah ok. Thankfully we have some people who know Japanese here so they could all double-check one by one, as long as it doesn't translate back to some random Japanese person name like last night. :P
EDIT: This is what it would give:
Hmmm, the romaji transliteration seems fine to me. :) Looks cool btw.
Thanks. The only thing I don't like as much about this one is its width compared to the original. I might redo it to be narrower.
What villages in ROL3 would have looked like if they were in color:
Oooh. That looks really awesome. IF you were to rework the sprites a bit, it'd actually look like a SNES RPG.
Yah, dat 8/16 bit feeling is great! :p
Thanks :D. Ideally I like to stay true to the original, but that was a fast conversion. Some grass tiles would probably be edited so that corners look rounded when next to water. And an HD conversion would probably be interesting.
I wasn't sure if there was a mockups thread but I remember there you posting some PRIZM mockup screenies on omni. I found a little xLIBC demo I did of them:
Woah that looks cool actually! O.O
You can create a mockups thread if you want by the way :)
Why not just doing a C version?
I don't like low level languages. I stuck with BASIC since the start and it will stay this way.
i do actually quite like low level languages :3
I don't know why, maybe because it seems like more of an achievement when
makeing something. Though i like high level languages too :)
C isn't that much a low level language, you made a game in a lower langague (Super Sonic Ball on Axe). But yeah, it's your choice. Maybe I should work on it...
Yeah i just could never get used to it. Blame me for getting too used to basic and being unable to adapt to changes. X.x
This is not much, but here is what sprites for my parody game called Legand of Zelda: Sord of Atari could look like if the game was ported to the HP Prime. All fonts except the 7 are by tr1p1ea and the 7 from Pitfall on the 2600. Some fonts were modified to fit my needs:
(http://img.ourl.ca/zeldatarimockup.png) (https://img.ourl.ca/zeldatarimockup-2.png)
I updated the ROL3 colored village maps on the previous page so that they fit in one screen, meaning 20x15 maps. I also updated the trees in the Ghost Village because it made no sense to have green leaves and grass in this post-apocalyptic year:
Ooh i really like those actually. Well done :)
400th post. Im coming for you juju
Inb4 you become me :P
Thanks by the way :)
This is not really 100% my work since it's entirely based on Final Fantasy, but I took my Reuben Quest color window borders then scaled them up, then edited them without looking at FF borders. What is particular about them is that they use TI-OS colors, so they could probably be used with Celtic libs:
Guess from what game this is!
Also, those graphics were what I originally planned to put at the top of the screen in my Mana Force remake before I finally scrapped the idea in favor of an HUD:
And what this would have given on the screen:
The flame sprite was ripped from Illusiat 2004 title screen and converted to colors.
Noice. I guess you could have put random thongs like tips or map's name but this banner looks quite good!
Ohh, i really like the flames. They actually fit quite nice in your char-vased game :)
Hmmm the banner looks cool. Maybe it can go on the title screen ?
I don't think it will be used sadly. I kinda like my animation now :P
Oh too bad. Well it's true that the animation looks cool too. :P
Hehe thanks. Part of the reason why I made that image at first was that I originally considered keeping the entire game intact including all text. I only got the HUD idea later. Also IIRC I wanted to use a 32 color pic for it but to do that you need to waste an entire 160x120 picture, which would have taken unnecessary amounts of space, and using inline sprites would have been tedious because I would need to separate the graphics in 8x8 chunks and I had many. >.<
Oh I see. Keeping the game as is would have been kinda stupid since you're porting it to a much nicer screen. I like the direction it's taking. :)
Too bad, i liked the fire bit :/

Not necessarily. It would at least have remained true to the original. But I felt like improving some stuff in the end because the game is so ancient and some stuff was just not adapted for the color screen. For example, the magic animation that was basically For(Z,0,50:DispGraph:Disp:End ended up lasting over 1 minute. O.O
Whoa thats long o.o
Oh. That's quite heavy. What was the animation?
It flashes between the home screen and graph screen very fast. But on the CSE doing so is very slow.
Yeeewah you prolly don't want that.
Is it some kind of test for the device of somthing? :P
Nah DispGraph shows the graphing screen and Disp shows the home screen. But on monochrome models that's quite fast so it almost looks like grayscale.
But with CSE's already legendary speed, you won't get gray like that! :p
What did you do instead?
He probably used the xlibs invert screen function I think. real(0,3,2
Quote from: Duke "Tape" Eiyeron on March 21, 2015, 08:04:27 AM

To do the flash effect I use the hardware inverting routines. This is why even the game HUD flashes when animations use that routine. It's much faster than manually inverting everything.
Because the hud gets affected too i feel like the spell is much more powerfull than when it wouldn't :)
Yeah I agree. It just looks a little inconsistent with the rest of the game where the HUD always remains black. But again NES games are a bit like that. :P
This is not really a sprite set, but maps from First Fantasy. I put the image in a spoiler tag because it contains lots of... ahem... spoilers. Also click the image to enlarge it, but it's ULTRA MEGA big (4680x6940)! It will even overflow outside the post so you will need to use the scrollbar in the post or click the link I included above the image. :P
http://img.ourl.ca/ffmfmapslarge.png
Map layout in the original 83+ game is identical, but each room is 16x8 instead of 26x10 and obviously monochrome with some different dungeon walls and names. The rest of the game is mostly different.
Its so big that my kindle can't even. >B)
Did it crash? The pic is not even 1 MB large :P
Yup, the kindle is already bogged down by this site, huge pictures kill it.
Let's avoid browsing CW with a PSP or with a Vita then... :-°
Yeah I think RAM is the problem.
That said some other sites are or were even more demanding.
*Ahem* Suuure there are heavier sites.
Like the pi calculating site?
Not going to tell anything, I'll make again people angry.
I agree. Besides, all sites got their upsides and downsides. But yeah basically my point is that CW isn't that bad when it comes to RAM usage, since the theme only use a few small images. It's when you view topics with all the signatures that it becomes a problem, although since signatures show scrollbars when higher than 150 pixels height, this discourages the abuse of images and large GIFs, and so far avatars seems small. (I guess it helped that I encouraged certain people to put pixel art as their avatars :P)
The worst gotta be Youtube, though. WHen I open the main page, my browser freezes for 5 seconds while it loads my list of 1080 subscriptions in the sidebar. >.<

Thanks. This one was an idea I had for the HP Prime in 2013.
Like a side scrolling Mega-Man type game? I like the Islands in the background they add a lot if you picture it without them :)
Yeah it would most likely be a barebones Mega Man clone. However, given such project would be pretty big and that I only made one small HP Prime game so far (Tunnel clone), it could take a while before it happens. Also Super Walrii Land has more chances to be finished earlier than such game, although I am betting that I'll have an RPG or another smaller game done before any of those two games. :P
Yeah I need to expand my game making genres, all of my games I am making now have had countless unfinished cousins when I was programming in Ti-Basic because of speed. I started working on one then it got too slow so I scrapped it and worked on another way to make it faster. Sight why did I not try other languages sooner :(
Well in my case I had no other choice than TI-BASIC because I had no computer early on, and as I have troubles adapting to changes, once I got more options it was already too late. Now I have troubles learning anything that isn't close enough to TI-BASIC. HP PPL is fine, though, but I didn't venture very far into it. And yeah I remember that many people scrapped their promising projects because Basic was just too slow for them.
I had just started being interested with computers and the like when I got my first calc and I started with BASIC, like you though if a language is closer to basic I learn it much faster like HP PPL I learned most of it in a week or two though we are all still learning :P . I am going to learn Java once my parents let me get a tablet <_< but I will still be very active on here with calc stuff :)
Hehe you can also share your java work with us, though :). But keep in mind Java is less and less compatible (eg most newer programs seems to run only with 1 specific version of Java) so fewer and fewer people might be able to run it. I hope you continue calc stuff anyway, though. :P
As for myself I did some Visual Basic shortly after learning TI-BASIC, but not as much because I couldn't affort to buy my own computer at home and at school we only used the computer lab about twice a week.
Don't worry I will keep up calc programming I feel I owe my little Ti-84+ for the stuff I know now because without it I wouldn't have wanted to code because I could only do it at home on the computer... so then I got addicted to calcs :P. I will definitely post my Java projects here I just need to learn it and that will happen after school is out probably.

Same but the teacher has a program that monitors all the computers so we have to do what we should be doing but when I am done I pull up an image of a :walrii: and turn on magnifier so he only sees a large walrii GIF while I play on my calc :P
Lol, we had that at the middle school that I went to. It was awful because our teacher was pretty lame and stuff. I remember some lame stuff that we did but I'm not sharing because :P .
Seems like im lucy our school doesnt monitize our computers that heavily. Also brentmaas found a way to access (and edit/remove) otherwise blocked system files, so theyre not that goot with computers. Also the program they use to upload our grades and homework, though really handy, is so badly written q.q (not written by our school but still)
Sorry to continue the off topic but our schools a little smarter than that. We have windows 7 server equivalent that resets on logout. The only workaround that I've found for mine is using google chrome as a file manager allowing you to launch files not normally accessible to you. In theory I believe I could reach the command line if I really tried but I don't and won't because people at our school got suspended for being racist against our principal who apparently has her own race of who knows what. They were actually suspended for misuse of school property but before that they were brought in for being racist ( they weren't although other people were ).
Also maybe you should split to a topic called school stuff in the off topic subforum.

Well the thing is that in the second to last grade of hi school, we had 4 empty slots where we could choose between compsci intro, arts, music, etc. Some people had 2 slots. All slots were filled with the same class, so every 9 day we had 2 or 4 computer classes, for an average of 2 per week. During the final year of hi school it was the same for me but also the computer labs were open during dinner breaks.
The annoying thing, though, is that when I had hi school, they used Deep Freeze, so when we installed stuff, it was removed upon restarting the computer. Also during the final year, in two occasions, they tried to stop people from downloading NES/SNES ROMs by blocking ZIP files (and for a shorter while EXE). Even behind a proxy it wouldn't work. Plus the internet was high speed, but shared between 100 computers, so it was actually slower than dial-up.
We should probably take this to a different topic I think :P
Yeah thats a good idea, dj.
Also our computer don't reset, but you can't install stuff / open the CMD. You have a specific user folder on our school's computers though, But its recommended you take a
USB stick with you and use that. You can use the CMD from a USB (only batch files), since we need that for computer science. So we made a quick batch that asks for input then executes that. Quite handy of you want to use things like Lua or Python and dont want to use their consoles.
Here are some sprites from First Fantasy II:
A lot are missing from this image, but I didn't want to include too many spoilers (although you can get an idea from the grayscale representation of sprite data). Also they're stretched up horizontally due to how CE Textlib works. Enemies are 7x14 and walls 3x9.
Cool! Spoilers.. :)
So, with the greyscale representation, does this mean you're considering my dream/flashback idea? ;)
I don't think there will be any enemy battle in the flashback area if it gets implemented.
That's okay. If you put dreary lightning flashes, would it be too slow in the redraw?
Yes it would. That's unless certain maps were designed to have low quality indoor sprites, though. I could use low-details walls, windows and such stuff as an excuse to have animations actually. :P
What about the inside of a house with just a few windows that show occasional flashing lightning?
I'm planning to add windows. Also i will probably modify my engine to allow full floor color changes, if I need it. That could be handy in the village or if I add a castle.
True(I just realized I say this a lot :P).
How might a stone wall with one of those classic wooden doors look like, and how fast would it render?
I don't know. I should give it a try at some point.
When is "at some point"? :P
I don't know really. It's not like I need such sprite for now. :P
Sprite request! :P
Can you make a side view of :walrii: if you find time?
Erm, the :walrii: you just posted is a side view sprite. Do you mean facing down/up?
Also, here are some Metroid tiles made with just 3 rectangles each (the black parts are actually transparent, so they're best used on a dark blue or black background):

Nope, I mean side-view without the view of his other eye and tusk. Also, I may or may not be able to use Voxel Critter Creator to make 3D :walrii: , as it only allows for a base no larger than 20x20 voxels.
Those are nice! Wouldn't a CE Textlib Metroid likely run faster than the original? I had always struggled with your Metroid on my monochrome because the movements didn't feel very "smooth."
Oh I see. That might be doable but I wouldn't see much point.
As for Metroid, yes it would most likely be faster.
I made a full font set:
Cool! It's something I would like to use. :)
This is from late 2008 I think:
This was written in TI-84+ BASIC with the help of xLIB. I also had a different program with 8x8 tiles that were in the first post of this thread and it was gonna be an Illusiat spinoff titled Nemesiat 2 (basically Illusiat 6-II or Illusiat VI-2). I lost the screenshot, though. But yeah, basically, 4-level grayscale was possible in hybrid TI-84+ BASIC with minimal flickering (per 2004-09 standards) and the speed rivaled Desolate on older 15 MHz hardware revisions.
those bushes look awesome and really prety cute ^.^
can you maybe add the 4 black/white pics you used originally so others can copy it? :)
Hm I don't think I have them anymore, sadly. But maybe I could manage to convert some of the GIF frames into separate layers if the flickering is nonexistent in some of them. I used Nitacku's grayscale ditherer on Omnimaga to convert them to useable xLIB format. (in hybrid BASIC 4-lv grayscale uses four pics IIRC)
who or what is Nitacku anyways?
I found lots of songs by "Nitacku" on radio omni, but never saw that guy online...
He was active on UTI and ticalc from 2005 to 2007 and on Omni from 2007 to 2009. He made lots of amazing hybrid BASIC games such as xLIB bowling
Really beautiful sprites, I like the cave sprite tessellation :^)
Do you make them from scratch or are you "inspired"?
They look pretty professional, but now graphics have ascended to 3-d stuff :^(
Thanks a lot. I made most old art other than Reuben monsters myself. For newer tiles I often recycle my old sprites I made, but I also add many new ones. For Reuben Quest monsters I just converted them. I got colored version of them based on the grayscale ones, though (basically I converted the original color monsters to grayscale, then almost a decade later, back to color)
Not really a sprite, but it's based on my pixel art from the past: Illusiat logo in HD
