Title: How did you get into calc programming/forums?
Post by: Snektron on March 21, 2015, 03:23:35 PM
TheCoder1998 first showed me omnimaga.org about a year ago. Since i wasnt really interested in calc programming i didn't join (or maybe i did, just never posted anything). After a while i started making basic programs to make math easier (i was too lazy to solve quadratic equations myself lol). Then TheCoder showed me Axe and i started doing that. When i heard a new Calculator forum was opening i thought that was a great opportunity to get into forums, so i signed up like a month before the official release. I also started learing Z80 ASM about half a year ago.

What about you?

after looking up games for my nspire, and saw that I could play GBA games on it, but needed ndless to do so, so I looked up ndless and found omnimaga, that's how I got into it

I was looking for games for my CSE and then I found out that they are programmable relatively easily do i started programming in BASIC, and I had some questions, so I registered at Cemetch, the only forums site I knew about at that time.

I started experimenting with calculators in 8th grade and I found this video which got me into basic programming.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEIGhIeteRc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEIGhIeteRc)
(or maybe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggjQ_rujN0s
).

I then did lots of solvers in math. Then I spent like a week looking through TI-Basic Dev and I learned the graph screen. I made a collection of solvers with a nice menu. My first game that I made was a star dodge game made in basic. Now I'm on to axe parser and things are going pretty good (I'm working on my first big(ish) game).

It's a common first axe project (hint. hint.). I think that you saw the options menu so you might be able to guess by the ship. The project isn't actually that big but I am writing it on my friends calc so its slow going.

My first experience with calcs was in 7th grade where my teacher had Ti-83s. I later noticed the PRGM button and made my first prgm  "1+1" it of course outputted 2. After that I looked for a calc of my own, it just so happened that my sister had one from high school so she gave it to me. Then I looked up how to program a graphing calc. I came up with this...
After watching that I started programming a little on my own

That was one year ago and to this day I have to make sure I have pants with big pockets because I have my calc in there :P (That is true too...)

@alexgt your Youtube link is broken. :P

In my case I saw a friend play Snake and ZTetris on his 83+ and then got interested into making games for that calc after I learned it was programmable. I was 14 back then. I found about the TI community when I first searched for calc games on Google.

I joined my school TSA  (http://www.tsaweb.org/) (Technology Student Association) last year, got a 83+ for the calculator robots competition, and taught a few friends how to code. We were the only people doing the robots out of the entire section :P

I don't know how I found the community :P

You stalked me on Youtube IIRC.

Also that reminds me, the first forum I joined was MaxCoderz. :P

Since Youtube didn't exist back when I started calculator programming and that good tutorials were either sparse or hard to find, I only learned from the TI-83+ guidebook that came with my calc (yes, back in the days, your calc came with a 900 pages brick that has screenshots of TI-83 Plus OS 1.00!)

My first calc was a TI80 I got when I was 10 (it was my uncle's high school calc which he gave to me). It's been 8 years since I started doing that now. :P

Oh wow you got to know the TI-80? I am kinda surprised considering it was discontinued in January 2002 (although local stores here sold it until about 2004 or so). That calc was a piece of crap in terms of durability and speed. Even the TI-81 was faster. >.<

I myself have one, but the LCD broke a few years after I got it.

Mine still works. I believe I only changed the batteries once or twice since I have it.

Cumred as much as I agree, we should try to be careful with such off-topic posts. Although I am ok with some offtopic comments when the rest of the post adds to the discussion, in this case it was totally unrelated, so it would be best if it was posted in a pixel or avatar-related topic or something to keep CW discussion at a certain quality level. ;)

Sorry :c

And i would love to have such a calculator, though i probably wouldn't use it for much :/

The thing is that while it supports some decent programming (it has For loops, input, prompt, Disp and graphical commands allowing minimal graphics and interaction), the speed just gets in the way. For example, the program editor scrolls as slowly as the TI-84+CSE and drawing commands or Disp are as slow as Casio PRIZM drawing commands. It's that bad. But hey, what can we expect with a 980 kilohertz (yes, not even 1 MHz) processor?

By the way, the first calc I ever had was the 83+. I got the 83+SE in response to the Illusiat 2002 incident as second calc to backup my stuff since I couldn't afford a computer. My 3rd calc only arrived years later in 2007, though, and it was the TI-89 Titanium. I remember having kept it hidden from my mom so she won't get scared that I am wasting my money, especially that I was about to move out. :P I only started racking up my collection in 2008 or so and guess what calc I got as 4th? The TI-81 ;D

I suspect that mine stopped working properly because it was under a pile of about 10 other calcs and maybe the weight killed the LCD or something. Or maybe just dust went in, I'm unsure. In any case, stuff still displays sometimes, it's just very glitchy, such as stretched chars and missing ones.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhoIKt2wFBw

The way it behaves, though, makes me think it might be soemthing else being in the way, though, such as corrupted ROM.

This video dates back in January 2011.

I suspect that the batteries might be corroded. I can't really see anything though ( bad intrrnet ).

Wouldn't the calc stop turning ON altogether in such case?

I saw a cemetech post where the LCD got screwey and the program editor displayed rubbish. I'll see if I can find it.

I had experimented in HTML before I even got a calculator, but I'm not sure why I did that, since I don't remember what inspired me to learn how to code. I then got my CSE, and since I knew that my brothers had similar calculators (84+SE), I could get games and (subsequently) program them. I looked up how to program the CSE, then found TI Basic Dev. I then found Omnimaga through a link to a post JWinslow sent me on one of my game progress threads, or at least I think that's how that happened. I signed up (but signed up for Cemetech earlier, didn't post anything, then completely forgot that I did that), and the rest is probably archived.

I joined CW as soon as I heard about it via Omni. I think I already documented how I joined Omni somewhere, now I just have to find the thread :P

In my case I jumped from a forum to another quite a lot in the past, either because they were dying, opening, lack of interest or drama. The first TI website I visited was GFox83+ (which closed soon afterward but remained online as France 83 for a few years) and the one I signed up to first was Espace TI-83 Plus in early 2002 or so. The first forum I joined and participated on was MaxCoderz in September 2009 and the second one was forum89.vvlr.com (now http://www.yaronet.com/forum.php?s=493 ). The third was Drubu Productions and fourth United-TI.

I think my order was
Ticalc (somehow, maybe while searching for programs?)
Cemetech (Banned almost 1 year ago, even though it's a temp ban I have to keep my promise of asking for an unban after 1 year)
Omnimaga (I'm inactive there now because I haven't found anything interesting there that's being posted in)
CW (I'm most active here)

that last post was finally my 100th post -_-

I just realised that I was the first member to register here in the new year. (would I be the first member to register without external access?)

Why are you banned Prince?

Spamming :p. And breaking a ton of rules, annoying the admins in general

Used up all three strikes in under a month -_-

Ah that sucks. At least you learned from it over the time. (And improved further in the months following the ban)

I'm afraid I'm in that path too.  I've been spamming in IRC lately. I just kind of took a break from cemetech so I wouldn't get out of control.

It's almost 1 year though, I dunno if I'm going to ask for an unban. Maybe just to use Sourcecoder and the emulator :P

Less all-caps, less 1-word posts, less intentional misspelling and perhaps a less flashy avatar (unicorn pixel art? :P) and then this would be a major improvement. :) The good thing though right now is that you are contributing constructively and seem to want to learn more about calculator programming. :)

I hope all my unconstructive posts were deleted :P
