Title: Have you ever met a calculator community member in real life?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on June 24, 2016, 03:12:30 AM
See topic title. I was wondering if any of you ever met other community members in real life? I am talking especially about people you originally met online, then later saw them in person (such as during a trip).

I know that some Omnimaga and Cemetech staff often meet each others at Maker Faire in September and that past ticalc.org staff often met each others as well. In my case I met Aaroneusthegreat in 2009 and I often see Juju since late 2010. Juju also met Deep Toaster (formerly Deep Thought) from Omnimaga in 2014 and there are chances that PatrickD visit Canada this July so hopefully I can see him :walrii:

What about you?

Yep, I met DJ here numerous times and I met Deep Toaster once while he was visiting my town.

I wish. Sometime, there needs to be a calculator or anagram convention in West Allis...I'd be there in a heartbeat!

That would be cool. I wish I could afford traveling to USA actually. I need a passport first but I never bothered getting one since I can't afford to travel anyway. If 9/11 didn't happen then we wouldn't even need a passport anyway in Canada to visit USA I think.

Besides those who I have introduced, no. I almost met comicIDIOT but plans fell through.

Same here. I do wish to go in some conventions in the USA, but, eh, money.

Sorry to hear it didn't work out. With Deep Toaster I almost met him but his trip was postponed 1 day later. I asked the previous day off but didn't have the other one off, and he could only stay in Quebec City for 2 hours to eat because that was a guided tour from some Chinese company. D:

Which reminds me, I always found it ironic that most people who invited real-life friends to Omnimaga/CW left the community almost immediately afterwards, while their friends stayed (eg Lord Coniupiter when he invited you and TheCoder1998 when he invited Cumred/Brentmaas) <_<.

I live in Australia, so meeting up with other community members isn't always easy (even though tr1p1ea and I only live 1-1.5hrs drive from each other!)

But I did meet Patrick D back in 2006 when he came to Australia, and again this year as well!

Also last year when I was in the USA, I met Kerm & Elfprince for breakfast, and I also met Merth who came along to see my band playing on tour, which was awesome :)

Yeah true. In my case I live not too far from USA but I'm very tight on money, so if I save for a trip that pretty much means no longer doing anything for half a year. But I am really considering it. :3=

Always interesting to meet up with community members :)

Title: Re: Have you ever met a calculator community member in real life?
Post by: ::CMG (UTOPIA):: on July 22, 2016, 06:04:48 PM
No because...

1. I'm "technically" a new member

2. I live on an island, so unless other people on here are on said island my chances of meeting people are limited

Now that I think about it, I don't believe I've met anyone in person on any forum I've ever been apart of (my first forum I ever joined was in 2004)... dunno how I feel about that, lol.

You can include Omni and TIMGUL users I guess, but yeah so far I met two people who made a trip to QC and one who lives nearby. I never traveled further than Ottawa so far, since it's expensive.

On a side note do you live in USA?

If by "must not be that hard to get there" you mean "waiting hours in traffic depending on time and dealing with people that can't drive for c because NY is overpopulated as c", then yes, it's not that hard.

Also our bridges have tolls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MTA_Bridges_and_Tunnels)... have fun with that.
Title: Re: Have you ever met a calculator community member in real life?
Post by: Yuki on July 22, 2016, 07:13:56 PM
Eh, we have the same problems here. As I heard, it's kinda hard to get to the Montréal Island as well. Although the few times I went it wasn't that bad, probably because I went outside the rush hours. Same for Québec City, the bridges are mostly always congested at rush hours.
Title: Re: Have you ever met a calculator community member in real life?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on July 22, 2016, 08:29:20 PM
Oh I see what you mean now. I thought you meant hard to get there in terms of being in the middle of nowhere in Pacific Ocean or being an island of like 9 people with no airport nor harbor.

And yes traffic in Montreal is ridiculous, but not as bad as in NYC area. If Long Island traffic is that bad, then no wonder why nobody went to Islanders hockey games back then...

If Long Island traffic is that bad

I think you misunderstood me... Long Island traffic is actually not as bad as the city traffic or even Queens traffic for that matter.  Long Island is made up of two counties (Nassau & Suffolk, which represents the "body and tail" of the island respectfully). Queens and Brooklyn make up the head of the island but are not considered part of long island but rather part of the 5 Burrows (Bronx, Staten Island, and Manhattan being the other 3).  What I was insinuating was regardless whether you're getting on or off the island, you're always going to have a difficult time and have half to most of your day spent on the road because of multiple things (congestion, accidents, construction, stupid people, etc...) preventing you from getting to where you gotta go in/out of the island.  If you're coming into long island, once you pass Queens, its smooth sailing the rest of the way cause you have officially entered into Nassau County and Long Island in general.

I thought I had posted here before, but... ?

Anyway, I only wanted to mention I met Jim & Stefan Bauwens and Vogtinator while at the FOSDEM 2017 (https://fosdem.org/2017/) conference a "few days" ago.
(I had already seen Jim actually)

That said, the list of other community people I've met in the past includes, in alphabetical order: critor, Elfprince, Excale, Jim Bauwens, KermM, Laurae, Levak, Lionel Debroux, Merth (+ some TIers that have been active (some many years ago, some more recently) in the community by publishing stuff etc., but idk if that counts :P).
I almost met DJ and Juju, too, while I was in Québec.

Wow, nice to hear. I didn't know you got to meet them in person. Which reminds me, I haven't seen Stefan in ages. I also didn't know Lionel had met any community member IRL (there was not a single picture of himself ever posted anywhere online during his entire stay in the TI community).

Too bad I couldn't meet you, but it would have been hard to do so as you were in Montreal only during school year and I worked all weekends. The only time I would have been able to meet you is on tuesdays, most likely. Not to mention I and especially Juju would not have been able to afford the bus trip (and possibly hotel) there. >.<

Personally so far I met Aaroneusthegreat in 2009, Juju multiple times from 2010 to present (not as much now due to aforementioned money issues) and PatrickD last Summer.

And yeah such trip would be expensive, especially the hotel if you came during Summer, holidays or the Winter Carnival <_< (although if I was in vacation during the entire trip then an hotel would not be necessary :P).

Lol yeah I don't think I would spend multiple days hiking alone. We never know what can happen. In Quebec in some areas there are bears in the woods, so if you have food with you then say good bye to your food (and they can be deadly unless you know how to deal with bears). There are probably maps of areas at risk, though. I tend to prefer wandering around the city or nearby areas anyway lol

Title: Re: Have you ever met a calculator community member in real life?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 23, 2017, 01:56:18 AM
Trust me, you don't want to encounter a bear. The issue, though, is that you have to avoid being scared, because if you run away they'll chase you. Backing away slowly apparently works, although I don't know if playing dead does.

Other than bears, if you guys ever come here we should absolutely hang out at MacFly if you don't mind noisy place and the lack of dance music, because they have 70's and 80's arcade machines (although a few of them are usually out of service) and if you buy a drink you can play for free at will as long as you don't start tilting the pinball machines nor putting your drinks on top of them. :3=
Title: Re: Have you ever met a calculator community member in real life?
Post by: kotu on February 23, 2017, 01:58:35 AM
The main important thing is to make lots of noise banging trees etc as you walk around, then the bears hear you coming, and they will probably keep away

Running away is bad as they will easily run faster

Also hiding in a tree is no good as they can climb trees  ;)
Title: Re: Have you ever met a calculator community member in real life?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 23, 2017, 04:04:50 AM
I wonder if screaming can help too? The issue, though, is if you can't scream loud enough. And lol I wouldn't want to clib a tree to hide from a bear.

Post by: kotu on February 23, 2017, 04:06:52 AM
Screaming/shouting at the bear was mentioned, i cant exactly remember, i think it's as a last resort. Shouting and making yourself look big (throwing your arms up) i think.

When we were to Canada, my mother bought a bell because in a guide it said this will keep bears away - however, we were laughed at by a friend we visited there. His advice was talking and singing before encountering the bear because this will scare them away - whereas the bell would have made them curious.

Amateur  <_<

Nah Bear Grylls is amazing

I guess you would run if it's at night

I wonder what'd happen if you would sing "Hell's Bells"

Isn't it different for different kinds of bears?
Iirc some an climb on trees, some can't, and that playing dead also only works for some special types of bears...? :)
