Title: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3 [4x3 contest] [HP Prime]
Post by: alexgt on April 30, 2015, 05:11:35 PM
NAGOJI 4x3 pronounced NA-GO-JE is a game for the HP Prime. You are a skillful ninja with super human powers to jump, dive, and smash through anything in your way! But there is one catch you must defeat the master of all pixels. He is taller and stronger than you, he throws obstacles at you and he is incredibly scary  >B) but you the  :ninja: shall only prevail if you got da skillz. The question is if you can make it past all ten levels and defeat the master of all pixels to free your self from his cruel rule.

This game also has the retro feel of the z80's lcd just to make it feel more awesome!
I am not responsible for any rage this game causes comparable to flappy bird, also in higher tier levels you make have seizures if so consult your doctor promptly and see if this is right for you
OOh I was wondering if someone would do such game. Will it be like Mario, Flappy Bird or more top-down view where you move up or down? Also can you jump outside the screen?

And I like the TI-83+ style :)

You will be a 2 pixel tall :ninja: and you will be able to jump, dive, and smash the obstacles. The boss will have a damage meter (I don't know where) and it will have 3 or 4 pixels for the health and when they all turn red he will die.

Also can you jump outside the screen?
I don't know what you mean but you reminded me that you will control him by tapping - for a smash, swipe up for a jump, and swipe forward (or to the right) to dive

Thanks for the ideas :)

Ooh I see now, I like the diving idea. Maybe you could make some obstacles gray so that you can go through them when smashing into them accurately and others that you can go through?

As for jumping outside the screen I meant so that the guy isn't limited to the 3 pixels in height and be able to jump above obstacles. But that could cause some problems since people might just jump above every obstacle outside the top of the screen.

He isn't 3 pixels tall he is 2 :P when he jumps he will move up 1 then down 1.

The obstacles are
Jump - The ones that are 1 pixel from the bottom
Dive - The ones that are two pixels from the top
Smash - The one that covers the entire 3 pixels

All of those you can get over without going over the screen!

I am working on controlling the player!

Oh I was talking about the screen vertical height, not the guy. Hence why I said 3 pixels :P

Also I like the idea. If the game speed increases the further you progress, this will definitively be fun to play :)

Got the player movements down stayed home "sick" from school today so I can work on it some more. Once you transfer to another level things will get faster by a little but I plan to make it more difficult in other ways...

That might work but I wan't only one way to get over each obstacle and that would provide more than one.

UPDATE:
I have put in a leveling system and finalized the player movements. You will go up to level 10 then fight the boss (from my ~5 minutes of actual playing I only got up to level four but I am not very good at my own game :P )

At the start I made a timer that goes from red, yellow, green, then starts with 1 second spaces between them but that might be shortened

Sadly I am on my laptop that does not have the linking software so I will not be able to post screenies :( but they will be here soon.

Sorry for the double post but is it ok because it is a update?

Still have to work that out I have ideas like dodging stuff would damage him but I'm not certain yet.

I started thinking on it again for the boss and I have the gameplay down pat. But I could use some ideas for the boss, the ones I come up with just wouldn't go well with 4x3 resolution :(
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 04, 2015, 01:36:50 PM
Hmm I'll see if I can come up with ideas for 2x3 or 3x3 sprites, but I can't promise anything. >.<
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: alexgt on May 04, 2015, 08:15:09 PM
Opps... I meant the actual boss game play like should there be fast moving obsticals that you doge and damage the boss or something like that. I didn't really mean sprites :P
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 06, 2015, 05:14:50 AM
Oh right. I don't know really. I guess maybe at the end of each stage the obstacles could suddenly go much faster with the screen colors inverted or something like that. Or you could go with no boss and just have the difficulty slowly increase. It would still be fun.
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: alexgt on May 10, 2015, 06:17:25 PM
I made the boss at the end make the screen go all trippy and there are random speeds to through you off (I haven't got to the end yet though). The game has no end it just gets really weird. Also when you die it displays a 8 bit binary representation of your score!

Now that you mention this, you could make some bosses so that as the obstacles approach, they become harder and harder to see, then in later levels, they are even harder to see, only visible when in the second half of the screen, to finally only be visible for 1 frame.

When you play it you will figure out how impossible that would be O.O. It is really hard at level 8 for me, displaying it for only 1 frame... I cannot bare to think of the rage...

I am at school now so when I get home I will.

I also got to level 10 and then when the screen spammed I died instantly I tried again and I got back and it is really hard like I want it to be :). I also made it possible to win at 130 points, level ten starts at 100 before that you increased a level every ten, so there is 30 obsticals in level 10.

I think it is the same speed on the emulator because I have a wait() command in there so you should be able to :). I made the arabic to binary converter in a separate program so I will release it here (http://codewalr.us/index.php?topic=400.15).

Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 19, 2015, 05:01:13 AM
The trick I found to make sure that a game is hard enough (unless you're really skilled) is to make the game about 4 times slower then try to beat it that way. If you have an hard time on your first few tries then it might be hard enough. It can be overkill in some cases, though, so it's not always the ideal solution, but it speeds up development and testing. :P

As for when you win I am unsure. you could always make the game scroll a banner of text through the screen or even just GG (which stands for good game in online games)

I think I will make it so it speeds up allot instead of randoming speeds because with the flashing screen you can't really tell :P

Kidding aside, if it didn't leave your calc and the calc didn't leave your eyes while they were playing, then it's fine :P. It's more if you put it online for download or if you distribute the game to other calcs at school that it would be a problem. :P

Aah I see. That is not really convenient from HP's part, though. Maybe I should report the issue to them or suggest them to auto-assign icons to apps so users don't have to manually do it.

On a side note, now that the contest is over, one suggestion I have for the game itself would be to make it so that you have to press the down arrow to crouch instead of left. Otherwise it's kinda weird and harder to remember it seems. That's unless that control choice was intentional to increase difficulty, though.

Thanks and no problem. I'm gonna switch to this version later. Do you plan to add a delay in it so that it's playable in the emulator?

EDIT: And your icon doesn't show up. It still shows the quadratic equation icon. EDIT Nevermind I was doing it wrong. I was sending the files from inside the folder rather than the folder itself.

You can still play in the emulator, but this particular game lacks delays so if your computer is too fast the game will be emulated way too fast to be playable (in my case, after the 3-2-1-Go part you die instantly.

What I suggest for delays is to use the TICKS command. I don,t remember how many TICKS one second is, though, but basically return the current time using that command into a variable, then once your loop is over, use the WAIT command to wait until enough TICKS elapsed. I have yet to figure out the proper formula to do it, though, but if done properly, it should keep the frame rate capped to something you want.

But yeah the next versions of this game, if any, really need to fix control issues, because having to press LEFT instead of DOWN in order to crouch doesn't make much sense IMHO. Otherwise the game is pretty nicely done. :)

The reason for that control layout is because I was going for the feel of diving forwards and not falling on your face :P

Also that is what made the game a little difficult so you had to get used to it :P

Also did you ever beat it if not what was your high score?

I bet the touchscreen would be very much harder, unless the player could swipe the whole screen to move

My highscore is 5 >.<. It's almost as hard as Flappy Bird O.O , but the only reason why is crouching controls. I always end up mixing up crouching and dashing controls XD

Well I will make a new version for you :P
Up = Jump

Down = Dive

Left = Smash

Are those good controls :)
You have to get to the end it is, well, I can't tell you :P

UPDATE (note only use this if the controls were hard for you to learn :))
- Changed Right is now smash
- Changed Down is slide
- Did not change up is still jump :P

As always unzip the file and drag the resulting file into the Application lib for your calc :)

bump.

Is the screenshot in the OP accurate? If not, @alexgt can you make a new one showing all the features? I may be able to port this to the CSE. Also, what version of the HP Connectivity kit does it require? Because I think this W XP comp can handle the one without the app update.

hmm I probably won't be able to do that flashing background, but I can invert the screen colors for that. I also may make the player one block, instead of 2 because of speed limitations. And maybe I'll put the player in the middle of the screen, instead of the bottom.

YEah sending apps on an HP Prime or the emulator is quite a nightmare. >.< Also they tend to not run at all when out of RAM but won't tell you why.

Very true but Nagoji is small so you shouldn't have any problems with it ;)
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on August 19, 2015, 11:41:47 AM
Indeed, although other small games or programs might not necessarily run as well if they make heavy use of the RAM (such as very large GROB's being created just minutes after running another RAM-intensive program).
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: alexgt on August 19, 2015, 11:51:35 AM
Also the problem would come only when you transfer to IRL calc since there is no RAM restrictions when you transfer to the PC EMU that is probably why my tests went smoother than yours when you tried to install MinePrime <_<
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on August 22, 2015, 04:53:08 AM
Yeah that might explain things. I wish both platforms ran things identically and that the emulator had speed throttling. It would make testing much easier.
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: alexgt on August 23, 2015, 11:45:57 PM
MUCH easier <_< yeah that would be great then we wouldn't have to make two of the same games (one slower)
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on August 24, 2015, 07:17:06 PM
Well that's why you use the TICKS command or go with the lazy route of using WAIT alone :P
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: alexgt on August 25, 2015, 01:03:57 AM
I made a milisecond timer using TICKS in UtilPack but for a game like Nagoji I have a built in delay so in the PC version I had to increase the base delay from 900 to 20000+ O.O

It is fine that you are still working on it ;). It is allot harder to port something with more limited commands (HP PPL to Hybid Basic) than Hybrid Basic to HP PPL :)

It depends. I thought that you could setup a WAIT command that makes the program wait until TICKS+15 or (TICKS/1000)+.015? Unless that doesn't work?
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: alexgt on September 02, 2015, 05:28:50 AM
For Nagoji it didn't work (if I even waited 1 millisecond per game loop it would have to wait 900 mil + the time it takes to run the rest of the code so I made the delay timer for specific instances in the code where you would have to wait a precise amount of time not for delay in game loops)
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on September 06, 2015, 05:33:18 AM
Aah ok. I guess it's up to you and what you find better. Just keep in mind that if you ever use a solution that requires updating two copies of the game (eg a version that runs faster for the emu) would get pretty annoying to update.
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: alexgt on September 08, 2015, 11:48:41 PM
I agree totally but it is hard to change once the game is made (and I highly doubt that there will be more updates for Nagoji :P but MinePrime I can see a problem)
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on September 11, 2015, 06:01:38 AM
I guess if later there is enough demand, someone could update NAGOJI and make a version that runs in the emulator. But now that a TI version was made, an emulator version for the HP Prime would be pointless, since most HP Prime emulator users who don't own the calc are TI users.

Can't you just add a WAIT() command somewhere with a delay of a certain amount of time?
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
Post by: alexgt on September 20, 2015, 04:18:25 PM
It depends on how the game loop goes but keeping the PC version in mind I should be able to make it compatable
Title: Re: :ninja: NAGOJI 4x3
