Yes I did. As soon as it allows me to actually jump. Unlike the NES SMB1, the instant jump trick doesn't appear to work in SMM D:

Have you tried spinning while jumping to keep your airtime?

Spinning actually makes me jump even lower...

I said "while". Pressing ZR or ZL (or whatever buttons you press to spin) while in the air keeps you in the air for a little longer. This margin is small, but it matters, especially straight after Challenge #1.
