Try to lower your volume in case this is not good for your ears, but basically this is a video with an audio file that goes from 20 Hz frequency up to the maximum that can be heard by most humans:

Anyway, for me, starting at 5400 Hz, the volume seems to decrease in every 20 to 20000 KHz video/sound files I listened to, then around 5700 KHz it starts increasing again

I wonder if it might be my headphones, if it happens to others or if I have some hearing loss happening? O.O I know that older people hear higher frequencies less sometimes, but I thought this was weird that there are mid-range frequencies I hear less in particular

Ticalc.org just launched its first survey for the 2016 Program of the Year award. Since @JWinslow23 won the 83+/84+ POTY by default (there was only 1 program for that calc this year), the first poll is for the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, with four programs competing:

Checkers 84+ CSE http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/455/45557.html
Connect 4 http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/452/45279.html
Graph3DC http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/466/46641.html
Pong with Sound http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/467/46770.html

I already have made my mind up I think for the CSE vote, but I still need to try 1 program before my final decision is taken. I encourage everyone to vote now (only 1 week left). If you don't have a ticalc.org account then you should make one, since it's the main TI community site. :)

Gaming / Nintendo AVS (Advanced Video System)
December 06, 2016, 03:39:06 AM
Has anyone ever seen this before? Apparently this is what we almost got instead of the NES in 1985 in USA: Seems like it would have been closer to those 8-bits computer systems overall:

Basically, a NES with a keyboard, data storage unit, infrared gamepads, handheld joystick and more.

The November 2016 Monthly CW Project Award poll is now up!

With thanksgiving, upcoming school tests and holidays approaching, November was a slower month in terms of projects, but the following list and the poll looks a bit smaller than that partly due to how four of the November projects that were active already won a previous iteration of the Monthly CW Project Award (ICE Compiler, CEmu, C SDK/Libs and Reuben Quest 3), so in the end, there was still a ton of activity on the programming side of things. This makes it a total of 17 entries out of 21 that are eligible for this month:

(83+/84+) CalcSpeak TI-BASIC Terminal
(84+CE) gLib 3D Library
(84+CE) Kill CMND
(84+CE) Oiram CE
(Nspire) Firebird Emulator
(Nintendo 3DS) Unnamed Splatoon-style homebrew
(PC/GCW0) nKaruga
(PC) Blackspace: Welcome to Hell
(PC) Egg-Destroyer
(PC) Neural Network Evolution Simulator
(PC) Walrus Kingdom
(PC) Z80-based PICO-8 Clone
(Multiplatform) Claw Development System
(Multiplatform) Clouttery Battery Monitor
(Multiplatform) Opossum Massage Simulator
(Hardware) SID and MIDI on Arduino
(Hardware) Unicorn's Retro Console

As always, all entries are competing against each others, regardless of the platform. Have you spotted projects this month that you think are more notable in particular or that you liked in particular? Select four (4) options in the poll attached to this topic (requires 20 posts) then click Submit! And don't forget to visit each topic again to give authors encouragements and suggestions!

Site News & Announcements / p2 joins CodeWalrus staff
November 29, 2016, 06:23:54 AM
We are pleased to announce that the CodeWalrus staff is now expanding, with the addition of @p2 to the team, as topic manager.

p2 joined the TI community during Spring 2011 and remained active on Omnimaga until the end of 2012. While his early 2011 posting style had a different quality vs quantity ratio than it did later on, he quickly became a centerpiece of Omnimaga growth, especially with activity related to Axe Parser programming. Unfortunately, he became inactive for the next three and an half years, except for a brief period of time in March 2015, but has since returned, while also finding out about CodeWalrus. Since his return, he has contributed considerably, including a German Axe Parser tutorial, and he has also ventured into PC programming, with his current project being Walrus Kingdom.

He will now help reducing the staff workload, which can be difficult to keep up with when the entire team is very busy with life, school, jobs and other duties. Please welcome p2 to the team. :3=

Did you know that 14 years before Nintendo made Super Mario Run, there was already a Mario Run game for the TI-83, TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus?

http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/248/24828.html

Sure, it's kinda different and involves auto-scrolling levels with free movement rather than Mario walking non-stop by himself, but I have to wonder if Nintendo isn't getting some ideas from calculator fan games, after all... :P

Note: That game wasn't super great as there was no coin, but it was one of the first Mario games I played for calcs :P
#209
In 2010, Axe Parser revolutionarized TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus programming by bridging the gap between TI-BASIC and Z80 assembly, by providing an alternative to those two languages that allowed advanced graphics with the speed of assembly, but almost as easy to learn as TI-BASIC for people well versed into hi-level programming languages.

Then color-screen TI-Z80 calculators came out. However, there was no sign of life from anyone regarding a future port of Axe Parser for those calculators. On the TI-83 Premium CE and TI-84 Plus CE, we thankfully had C as a third alternative. However, while some prominent TI coders insisted that Axe should not be released on the CE due to C allegedly serving the same purpose, many people found C too difficult to learn and found that it did not bridge the gap between TI-BASIC and assembly as much as Axe did, as the graphical output syntax was way too different from pure and hybrid TI-BASIC.

Eventually, @PT_ stepped up and decided that a similar language would see the light of the day on CE calculators. While the initial reception was not very positive, the cross-posting of the project on all major TI forums led to its growth and while the syntax is different from Axe Parser (it looks a bit like a mix of xLIB and TI-BASIC), the idea is similar: Open TI-84 Plus CE dev to people who prefers TI-BASIC syntax, but wants speed that somewhat rivals ASM and C. And since last week, ICE Compiler lets you make full games featuring sprites and all!

Because the syntax of the rudimentary commands such as For loops look so close to actual TI-BASIC, my personal learning experience was pretty similar to learning how to use xLIB and xLIBC libraries a few years ago, but with the det() command instead of real(). As a result, if you are good at TI-BASIC, then you should not have too much difficulty picking up this language. In addition to that, ICE is open-source, meaning that anyone can contribute to its development (*cough*such as adding pointers, a copy-anywhere command and external variables*cough*), although in its current state it is functional to the point it can already be used for most arcade game development, just like when Axe Parser first made ticalc.org headlines.

Keep in mind, however, that like Axe, ASM and C programs, if you do a mistake, then the program will most likely clear your calculator RAM. As a result, you must backup your files and source before testing any program. SourceCoder, TokenIDE and TI-Connect CE editors can be used to program this language, just like TI-BASIC and Axe, although some commands will show differently. Full documentation about the commands, as well as program examples, are available with ICE Compiler.

Gaming / Please google TW2001 for me.
November 19, 2016, 06:47:16 AM
Ok seriously I have searched for TW2001, a PC game that is basically a parody of Hong Kong 97 for the Super Famicom, to no avail. However, screenshots of the game are available here:

http://kyahung83.blogspot.ca/2010/02/game.html
http://shogikappa.tumblr.com/post/119196967807/tw2001-video-game

The game title most likely stands for Taiwan 2001. I am curious if anyone ever had the chance to find or grab a download?

I haven't gotten the chance to listen to Twilight Force's newest album yet, but from what I heard so far it seems very amazing and I know some people here also likes the band so I decided to share:

That last song was played live a few times this year too. Also the band is touring Europe as Sabaton opening act next March. I hope they also do the same in North America when Sabaton comes over here in April and May.

Gaming / Ys: Memories of Celceta
November 07, 2016, 07:43:15 AM
So if you have a PS Vita/PS TV and don't have Ys: Memories of Celceta yet, then you should get it if you like action-JRPGs, because it's truly worth it. I just beat it by the way, although only in easy mode for now. It's a remake of Ys IV: Mask of the Sun for the SNES/PS2 and Ys IV: Dawn of Ys for the Turbografx-16 and it's the only version of Ys IV that ever came out outside Japan.

They reworked everything in the game, including the storyline so a lot is different, and the addition of difficulty levels makes the game more forgiving to casual players, while still offering challenges to hardcore players. It's kinda like Zelda on steroids, but much more linear. I would say that the downside of this Ys IV remake is that there are long loading times, a lot of unnecessary dialogs near the end (eg when your entire party says "Don't give up Adol!" one by one, followed by "Let's do it!" or "Right on!" one by one, then "We should get going", followed by a second series of "Let's do it!" one by one then "Let's go!") and I think I ran into some glitches sometimes but other than that it's awesome. As for the load times they can be countered by pressing O through some of the cutscenes, which fast forwards through them.

The other game downside is something I'm going to spoil you: The ending. Basically, once the final boss reaches 0 HP, the game switches to a black screen saying "The End", instantly (no transition or anything).
Just kidding about the ending. However don't expect much of an ending, because they really went full NES mode there. Even some of my calc RPGs have more text
And finally, I have the feeling that they were planning to add DLCs or bonus dungeons, but finally never did, because at the beginning there's a blocked mine entrance and there is no info about it anywhere online (most people even says there's nothing there). It looks like a bonus dungeon entrance, yet there is apparently  nothing special there.

Anyway, buy it or download it if you can find it. PS Vita JRPGs are friggin expensive per portable system standards in Canada now, even 1-2 years after they come out, so I kinda quit buying games for that system, but I got Ys long beforehand.

So Twitterfeed just sent us an e-mail announcing that they will shut down soon in two days. The reason I am posting this in site feedback is because the two alternatives they are suggesting (https://buffer.com) or Dlvr.it (https://dlvr.it), well... we never tried them yet and don't know how hard they are to set up compared to Twitterfeed, so at this time we cannot guarantee that new topics will continue to be shared on CW Twitter and Facebook pages. We will try those alternatives to see if they're reliable and let you know if we have any luck.

UPDATE Ok so it looks like Dlvr.it was even easier to setup than Twitterfeed and even supports networks other than Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook, such as Google+, so now posts will be shared on Google+. However, we'll stick to three networks, since adding more is paid on dlvr.it. So from now on, people who follows our social network pages will be notified of new topics via dlvr.it:

It's time for a wrap up of some previously unmentioned calculator and console releases that were piling up in our news pending queue in the past few months. Although this list probably misses many releases due to less free time, it still contains some noteworthy games that you might want to give a try. Most are for TI calculators, but there are some for other brands of calculators and retro-gaming consoles as well:

-Switch Operator (TI-84 Plus CE) http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/468/46804.html
A Cemetech Contest 17 entry, this is a reaction-based game where you need to let trains go through switches, featuring nice graphics and fast-paced gameplay.

-Chess (TI-84 Plus CE) https://codewalr.us/index.php?topic=1606.0
A Chess game is finally available for the CE and it features good graphics and advanced AI.

-Catylizm CE (TI-84 Plus CE) https://www.cemetech.net/programs/index.php?mode=file&id=1513
Originally released on the Casio fx-CG10 and CG20, this amazing-looking game has been ported by his author, Spenceboy98, to the TI-84 Plus CE.

-Lord of Fire (TI-86) http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/467/46799.html
A rogue-like turn-based RPG with nice graphics. While it has many sub-programs for its content, the game is still kinda fun and challenging. It's also very rare to see new TI-86 games nowadays.

-Ends of Fantasy (TI-Nspire CX) https://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=18908
visual novel for TI-Nspire CX (doesn't appear to have an English version, though)

-Arena (fx-9860gII) http://www.planet-casio.com/Fr/programmes/voir_un_programme_casio.php?showid=3152
Amazing looking grayscale arena-based game with battles similar to JRPGs.

-Flappy Bird (HP Prime) https://codewalr.us/index.php?topic=1584.msg44300#msg44300
Flappy Bird has finally been ported to the HP Prime.

-Infinity (Game Boy Color) http://www.ticalc.org/archives/news/articles/14/148/148949.html
Cancelled Game Boy color RPG by Affinix Software and the author of Joltima for Z80 calculators. Some older TI community might remember this project, as it made ticalc.org headlines back in the days. The game was canceled in 2001 due to being unable to find publishers, but last Summer it was finally released as is. The soundtrack was released a few weeks later at https://soundcloud.com/ericsgamemusic/sets/infinity-by-affinix-software

-Papi Commando (Sega Genesis) http://www.magicalgamefactory.com/en/factory/shop/
Top-down run and gun game similar to Ikari Warriors and Commando, by Studio Vetea. It's a paid software but we're posting it anyway because you can buy it in actual Sega Genesis cartridge format and play it on a real console like back in the early 90's.

Also, the following is not a release, but we thought we would mention it anyway: Did you know that there used to be a Super Nintendo version of Rayman in development? It was unfortunately canceled in favor of newer consoles back then, but earlier this week, a physical copy of an early build was found, thought to have been lost forever until then. See http://raymanpc.com/wiki/en/Rayman_(early_production) for more info. Could that early demo ever make it into a ROM download or even be completed, one day?

Gaming / Nintendo Switch console
October 20, 2016, 02:19:37 AM
From Twitter, Nintendo's newest console, codenamed the NX, will be the Nintendo Switch!

QuoteBe among the first to discover #NX. Watch the Preview Trailer at 7am PT/10am ET!
https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/788900063833493504

Can't wait for a summary of what's to come (hoping they actually leak info about the console hardware/design/what it is). I myself expect sub-par hardware, but much better portability than the Wii U (in terms of not having to be close to the Wii U to play on a gamepad), but who knows?

Update: They released a video of it and it looks very promising, featuring a tablet with detachable controllers (which can be used for two separate players), with the possibility to attach the tablet part to a dock station so that the Switch can be used as an home console.

It also supports cartridges similar to the 3DS and PS Vita, according to the video, and an advanced NVIDIA custom Tegra processor. Also, it appears to be running Mario Kart 8 and the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, meaning it will most likely be backwards-compatible with the Wii U game library, at least in digital form.

UPDATE: They also seem to have some promising third-party support so far. Note, for example, that ATLUS, Tokyo RPG Factory, Square-Enix and Bandai Namco are listed, which opens the door for JRPGs, which have been rare on Nintendo consoles since 1996. See https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/789155375526260736 for a list.

Gaming / 3D games on 8/16-bit consoles
October 19, 2016, 03:13:12 AM
Old gaming consoles were not designed for 3D graphics, even pseudo 3D, but some developers managed to pull off some neat tricks to achieve it without severe speed loss. One game that kinda impressed me was Red Zone for the Sega Genesis:

My favorite parts are the indoor missions. Look at the walls O.O. It reminds me of Toy Story floor and stuff. I am curious about what kind of special chip the cartridge uses, if any, because it literally looks like a Playstation 1 or Sega Saturn game. Anyway, has any 3D game on old game consoles blew your mind before? Another game that impressed me due to its time was Solaris for the Atari 2600:

First of all, congratulations to MateoConLechuga and the other contributors to the TI-83 Premium CE and TI-84 Plus CE C SDK and libraries project, which just won the September 2016 Monthly CW Project Award by a large margin (11 votes) and good job to all other project authors! Here are all the winners so far:

June 2016: (TI-84+CE) ICE Compiler v1.1
July 2016: (fx-CG10/20) Internet on Casio PRIZM
August 2016: (TI-84+CE)  CEmu
September 2016: (TI-84+CE) C SDK and Libraries

In addition to that, you can now browse CodeWalrus in Chinese, German, Hebrew and Russian. It was previously possible to browse the website interface in Dutch, English, French and Japanese, meaning that 8 languages are now available. Note, however, that all of them are just partial translations, due to CW using several third-party SMF plugins, and due to some translations being incomplete.

Gaming / Paper Mario: Color Splash
October 08, 2016, 04:06:58 AM
That game looks pretty great and fun, despite still not being a proper JRPG like Thousand Years Door and the original were. It also seems to incorporate elements from Splatoon. At least it doesn't appear to require switching the wiimote 90° every 3 second like Super Paper Mario. Has anyone tried it yet? What I am curious about is if there is a lot of dialog and text in the game? What I liked the least about the Wii game was the cutscene abuse. SInce that game was essentially a platformer with stages, the insane amount of dialog/text per Mario platformer standards killed the flow of the game IMHO. What about the Wii U game?

I was worried when they announced the new album and posted a new song that the new Sonata Arctica album would drift even further from their roots and erase all the progress that was made in Pariah Child and Stone Grows her Names, but it seems that at least one of the new song will be true to their old fast power metal style :)

For those who don't know Sonata Arctica much, back in 1999-2004 this band was a fast power metal band with a style a little similar to Dragonforce, but in 2007 or so Jani left the band and things either changed or went downhill, depending of your opinion, with Unia and The Days of Grays album being extremely different and much more darker than their previous ones, except the song Flag in the Ground. Then came Stone Grows her Name which was a bit closer to their old style but still a far cry from it, and then Pariah Child, which went closer to their old style but still not enough for fans, who seemed to consider that Sonata died in 2007. Anyway I am curious what they'll come up with next and I wonder if anyone will buy their new album?

http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/467/46799.html

I really want to play this game, but unfortunately I have three problems:

-It's a .tig file. I am surprised ticalc.org still accepts those because a while ago I swear that Travis and Nikky rejected them.
-I don't have enough batteries right now (my only set is in my 84+, which is used to test Reuben 3) and no emulator supports .tig files
-When I extract all with TI-Connect options for the .tig file, the resulting files becomes corrupted when sent to WabbitEmu.

So I am curious if someone could upload the .tig file directly to their TI-86, send it back to their computer in individual files then e-mail it to me? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone remember back when RPGs were not played in front of a TV screen, but rather with dices, a pen and paper? In the late 70's until the early 90's, there were various novels known as gamebooks, in which narration used the 2nd person instead of 3rd. More importantly, in those books, pages were not numbered: Instead, bunches of paragraphs were assigned numbers (although in Give Yourself Goosebumps, standard pagination was used) and in many occasions, at the end of each resulting sections, you were given options, such as going to 294 if you want to go west or 175 if you want to go right. Sometimes, there were multiple good endings, but bad endings (requiring you to restart everything from scratch, but I bet nobody ever followed that rule) were rampant, such as falling down a pit to your death.

Among gamebooks, some popular series were "Choose your own Adventure", "Fighting Fantasy", "Lone Wolf", "Give Yourself Goosebumps" and "Un livre dont vous êtes le héros" (the latter which included French translations of Fighting Fantasy and Lone Wolf). In some of those, there were also battles against enemies like in Final Fantasy, but obviously much more basic (or in Fighting Fantasy's case, 100% luck-based) and with hits missing 90% of the time due to broken system. But I felt they were pretty fun back then and a good alternative to video games when you couldn't play the latter. Even after I lost interest in playing those RPGs I continued reading the books, but without doing any of the battles.

Also, in case you don't know, before I started calculator programming, I also made Choose your own Adventure books of my own, all by hand, way back in 2000 and 2001. The difference is that they were comic-based rather than novel-based, battles were much more complex (to the point where a basic calculator was required) and there were shops in which you could buy items. The first game had four battle stats with each of them having their own set of experience points that you acquired by defeating enemies. The second game went as far as using a standard video game-based JRPG level up system with LV 99, 9999 HP, 999 MP and everything. Also, in those two comics, especially the sequel, there were world maps that worked similarly to board games with cases and the dice number determining when random enemy encounters happen. The following video has several scanned pictures of the first book:

I am wondering if you ever played that type of game and if you knew other gamebook/Choose-your-own-adventure-type novels/comics?

On July 4th 2016, it has been 15 years since I started TI calculator programming, starting with the TI-83+ then eventually moving up to color Z80/ez80 and HP models, using BASIC language through my entire programming career except in 2010 and for a brief period of time in 2013. Shortly after starting programming, I began working on a bare-bones RPG with graphical dungeons but menu-based battles. Shortly after the creation of Omnimaga (which celebrated its 15th birthday on September 1st of this year), the RPG, which was originally called Labyrinthe des Illusions (often nicknamed Labyprog) eventually evolved into a fully-graphical game that ultimately got renamed to Illusiat.  Although that particular game was plagued by severe balance issues and lasted less than an hour, it spawned a series of 13 JRPGs for the TI-83 Plus and TI-84 Plus series, 11 of which are still available in completed form, and several remakes.

Tonight, it's the original Illusiat's turn to celebrate its 15th anniversary! Illusiat 2 and 3 were also released in 2001, while Illusiat 4 through 12 came out in 2002. A pseudo 3D game called Illusiat 2002: La Quête Ultime, was in development in early 2002, but was lost in a memory clear (except the title screen logo, which was later re-used in the PC version of Illusiat 5) along with the first four games. Illusiat 1 through 3 were remade identically from scratch. Remakes of the first four games were released in late 2003. The Illusiat 4 remake remains the only version of that game still available for download, as the original version was never remade. Illusiat 5 first came out on Windows instead of calculators and was a point-n-click game rather than a role-playing game, but in early 2003 it was ported to the TI-83 Plus series. Illusiat 6 was ported to the original TI-83 in 2003 and was the second Illusiat game to be translated in English after Illusiat 3. The rest of the series was translated in 2005 (including a second translation of Illusiat 6). Illusiat 11 was re-released in 2007 with higher difficulty, as Kin Master Quest. In 2008, a TI-81 remake of the original game was released and later ported to all Z80 models for posterity. That remake was notorious for its extremely high difficulty and for being the only TI-81 game to ever make ticalc.org headlines. In 2009, the original series was rebooted, with Illusiat 13, but at 90% completition, the project was put on indefinite hiatus. The entire Illusiat RPG collection was featured on ticalc.org in 2013.

Although Illusiat 1 through 12, as well as the 2003 remakes, suffers from dated programming practices and rebutted many players due to most of them having ASCII-art sprite graphics, the latter games in the series features unusually elaborate ASCII-art animations and amount of features per calculator RPG standards despite some of the latter games being developed in about 2 weeks. As a result, the series eventually gained a cult following that lasted for years. This Youtube playlist features footage from many of the games.

Contests / August 2016 project award tie-breaker poll
September 17, 2016, 05:48:50 AM
The results for the August 2016 Monthly Project Award survey are now public at https://codewalr.us/1568 , but like with the June poll, both the following projects are tied with the highest amount of vote:

(TI-84+CE)  CEmu
(Computer)  nKaruga

We encourage people to vote again This poll will run for three days, meaning that it ends on September 20th 2016. Due to a SMF 2.0.11 glitch with the poll system, it's possible that the results go public by themselves before the poll ends, if not right from the start. If the poll ends up being tied on expiry date then it will go into sudden death mode, meaning as soon as the tie is broken at the same time a staff notices, the poll will be closed (*pokes @Cumred_Snektron @Streetwalrus @Juju @aeTIos @Ivoah in case this happens on Sept 20th*)

UPDATE (September 20th): And CEmu has won the August 2016 Monthly CW Project Award! Congratulations @MateoConLechuga, @jacobly, @Adriweb and the other community contributors! :3=

Current winners
June 2016: (TI-84+CE) ICE Compiler v1.1
July 2016: (fx-CG10/20) Internet on Casio PRIZM
August 2016: (TI-84+CE)  CEmu

Site News & Announcements / Empty topics bug fixed
September 15, 2016, 05:03:56 PM
Those who likes browsing through old forum topics might have noticed that in larger sub-forums, there were a lot of topics with broken icons, no title and empty "last post" information at the bottom of each page except the first and the last. There were also plenty of topics at the top (or sometimes the entire page) that were not ordered properly, rendering certain topic list pages unusable. If you browsed the forum as guest, those topics showed an unclickable title saying "(Awaiting approval)" in italic letters. To alleviate the problem until a solution is found, we set topic listings to 100 topics per page instead of 50.

This was due to a bug with the topic cloning plug-in we have used for over a year, which allows a topic to appear in more than 1 sub-forum. The bug was fixed a long time ago, but for some reasons, uninstalling the buggy plug-in version left some code behind, which went unnoticed until a new version of that mod came out a few days ago. The offending bit of code was removed and it seems the problem is gone now (it is unknown if it will come back if we have posts awaiting admin approval, but under such situation the issue would most likely be much less severe than it was). As a result, we have reverted back to 50 topics per page instead of 100 and older post lists should be easier to browse now!

HP has released firmware revision 10637 for the HP Prime. Besides some new feature additions such as being able to use a picture as graphing background and improved on-calc help, this new OS is said to improve stability and possibly fix the problems encountered in the previous firmware. This firmware was leaked by accident a week ago and later removed, but has since been re-instated.

However, backup all your data and projects before upgrading, because this firmware update in particular will format your entire Flash memory, possibly to ensure a full cleanup from potential hazardous issues left behind previous firmwares.

PC, Mac & Vintage Computers / Game Maker on humble bundle
September 06, 2016, 10:12:07 PM
I know that many programmers hate Game Maker and are against the use of it, but we are not in North Korea, meaning we can make games the way we want without verbal retaliation. Anyway the reason why I am bringing Game Maker up is that it has a major flaw in terms of how much it costs: While developing games for the PC is not very expensive (or even free with some versions), a license to develop Android, iOS and HTML5 games costed $500+ each.

However, for the next two weeks, this is no longer a major issue, because on Humble Bundle, you can now get every license for only $15 (or more if you decide to pay more). O.O

https://www.humblebundle.com/gamemaker-bundle?mcID=102:57c8c186486e541e45d652d6:ot:56e7b402733462ca8995ea5b:1&utm_source=Humble+Bundle+Newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2016_09_06_Game_Maker&linkID=57cf12f61b04d46b328b456a&utm_content=cta_button#heading-logo

I just thought I would share this for those who happens to be more into that type of engine (maybe @kegwaan  or @James Oldiges ?) but balked away at the $500 Android license.

Those who want to program in TI-84 Plus CE BASIC language with the help of ASM/C libraries to enhance the language will now be happy: A few months after @grosged released Sprites v3.3 library, which lets you use 36-color sprites, text and rectangles of any size in your games with very decent speed, Ricsan from TI-Planet has now released an utility for the PC to help you convert your sprite sheets into Sprites v3.3 format!

Until now, you had to use SourceCoder or another image to hexadecimal converter in order to convert each of your sprites one by one, then manually edit the hexadecimal using find/replace for when you wanted to use a different color palette. While this was feasible, it was tedious, especially considering there was no bulk sprite conversion available. It seems like this problem might now at least be partially solved, with Ricsan's utility, which supports bulk sprite conversion! Before using it, you still need to convert your image file into 36 colors, so if you are not tech-savy about what image editor can achieve that, then you might still be out of luck, but it should hopefully speed up development considerably.

Currently, there are four games that use Sprites v3.3: Wal-Rush! CE, Desert Bus II, GalagACE and SokoMario. The library supports scaled sprites, but they take more RAM since they are stored in their scaled form rather than scaled each time you draw them.

So a few days ago, Youtube changed their terms of services to clarify their ad-friendly content policies. From what I could gather, their current ad-friendly policies existed for a while, but were not enforced until recently. Anyway, regardless of who is to blame behind those policies (advertisers twisting Google's arm or Youtube doing this themselves?), I think this is a big issue because it seems like Youtube will head towards the TV model where artists have to censor themselves just to meet advertising requirements and still be able to continue making a living. And people won't like that censored content as much and thus, will result into decreased video views and less revenue for the artist.

Basically, I wonder if this could mean the end of big shows like AVGN, Pewdiepie or others if they are making a living from Youtube? We already got issues with Nintendo claiming the content of many fan videos and Square-Enix claiming songs in a similar fashion.

Also my concern is that it doesn't just target videos with vulgar language, but also controversial content. Will that controversial content be treated equally or will it favor specific political parties?

Contests / Vote for your favorite August 2016 CW project!
September 03, 2016, 02:34:43 AM
Tonight is time to announce the contenders for August 2016's Monthly CW Project Award!

Despite Summer being in full swing, August saw a regain in activity on CodeWalrus forums and especially the #CodeWalrus IRC channel. While fewer projects saw updates this month, the list is nonetheless pretty big and we encourage you to check out the linked author's topics below:

(TI-84+)  The WalrusLink Project
(TI-84+CSE)  Sorcery of Uvutu
(TI-84+CSE)  Tourn II
(TI-84+CE)  CEmu
(TI-84+CE)  gLib 3D ASM/Axiom Library
(TI-84+CE)  Kill the Evil Queen
(TI-84+CE)  Switch Operator
(Nintendo 3DS)  Undertone
(Nintendo 64)  Opossum Massage Simulator 64
(Panasonic 3DO)  Gameblabla's Crappy Compilation
(Pebble)  Phoenix-Inspired Pebble Arcade Shooter
(Pebble)  Pong
(Computer)  c4ooo's Unnamed LD36 game
(Computer)  c4's 3D Game Engine
(Computer)  nKaruga
(Multiplatform)  Claw Development System
(Multiplatform)  Clouttery
(Multiplatform)  PicoWM

All 18 entries are competing against each others, regardless of the platform. Past winners cannot win a second time, which is why they won't be included in future 2016 polls. Have you spotted projects this month that you think are more notable in particular or that you liked in particular? Select four options in the poll attached to this topic then click Submit! And don't forget to visit each topic again to give authors encouragement and suggestions!

You only have until September 16th to vote and you need at least 20 forum posts to do so, so hurry up! :3=

EDIT: IMPORTANT! Although it's impossible for an entry to win more than one award in one year, we somehow included ICE again by accident. As a result, all votes made on ICE were removed, as well as ICE itself, so we decided to extend the poll for another week to give the votes the time to vote again or change their vote if one of their choices was ICE. We apologise for the mishap.

Other / How good is your French?
September 02, 2016, 12:54:32 AM
So juju found one of those typical online quiz that lures you into sharing it on Facebook (although in this case it's optional), and it's a quiz to see how good is your French. It says basic French but some questions are more tricky. Anyway I thought I would share it on the forums because not only we have many French people around here but also some answers in the quiz are just completely hilarious (and sometimes NSFW).

Even if you only know basic French it might be worth trying for you :)

Guys, if you liked Castle of Illusions for the Sega Master System and Genesis (considered to be one of the best Mickey Mouse platformer by many retro gaming fans), the HD remake on Steam is gonna be removed tomorrow, because Sega is losing the rights to sell it. As a result, they marked the price down 85% off so now it's only $2.54.

You only have a few hours left to buy it (maybe less if you live in Europe?), then it's gone from Steam, forever.

This is a follow up to my topic posted on July 4th about how it was my 15th calculator programming anniversary. Today, it's now Omnimaga's turn to reach its 15th anniversary. While I and some others of us are no longer active there due to previously explained circumstances, the fact remains that Omnimaga has been around for 15 years now. Also I am still the one who created Omnimaga in the first place, back on September 1st 2001, and it slowly grew into a large discussion forum and IRC channel. Perhaps, we never know, CodeWalrus might have never existed if Omnimaga had not lasted this long.

I don't say this loud, but I'm still hoping, one day, that the two sites can be re-united again, even if this is unlikely under the current Omni ownership structure. Regardless of what happens, the first calc group I created is now 15 years old and even if it's different today, the Omnimaga of the past still lives on as well, even if in a different form/name.

Texas Instruments have finally released the new TI-84 Plus CE and TI-83 Premium CE OS, version 5.2, on their website. This new OS brings several major improvements to those two color ez80 calculator models, including what might be one of the largest TI-BASIC enhancements ever since 2010:

-Sending strings to the TI-Innovator via the Send() and Get() commands
-Many more TI-Innovator-related commands
-expr(): You can now solve math calculations that are stored in a string.
-eval(): Converts a calculation result into a string. @grosged 's sprite v3.3 library users might find this very handy.
-toString(): Same as above, but also handles the format in which the result was returned
-Wait: Pauses program execution for a specific amount of time. No more need for For(Z,0,999:End
-Pause command now has Wait abilities if you use the command to display text and specify an amount of time at the end.

However, that's not all, because if you program TI-BASIC directly on the calculator, the on-calc editor now shows the program line number inside the status bar! Some commands previously available exclusively in the CATALOG are now available via the PRGM key as well.

There are many more improvements, such as the ALPHA shortcuts on the TI-84 Plus CE, bringing this calculator closer to its French counterpart, and the release of a new application called Hub, which adds extra menus to the PRGM key during editing. Remember that for all commands, pressing the + key next to the name will bring up help on how to use it, with the syntax and required arguments.

And finally, new versions of Vernier EasyData, SmartPad, TI-SmartView CE and TI-Connect CE were released.

-TI-Connect CE 5.2: Windows and Mac
-OS 5.2: TI-84 Plus CE and TI-83 Premium CE
-Flash APPS: Vernier EasyData, SmartPad CE and Hub
