If possible, it would be best to keep this thread for chiptune music that you discovered or that you like, not stuff you created, in case one day this sub-forum splits into a music showcase and general discussion like what happened on Omni a few years ago. Create new topics to showcase your own work if possible. That's unless you want to showcase music from another user, which is fine, lol.
Anyway, my favorite 8-bit songs are mostly from Mega Man and Castlevania series and I like Ys music too. But I just found this and thought it sounded cool too :D:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJRCxH9P8Jo
It's a 8-bit remake of Super Turrican's first stage theme.
Also, music from Utz from Omnimaga is awesome as well, especially the calc stuff: https://soundcloud.com/irrlicht-project
My webradio (soundchip userbar in my signature) sums up all my OC chiptune discoveries.
Favorite artist : (IAYD)[https://m.soundcloud.com/IAYD]
I love Chris Huelsbeck's music! He did some great chiptunes on the C64 and the Amiga. He also composed that song you posted, DJ :)
Other artists I like are: Lukhash, Dunderpatrullen, Bossfight, Tim Follin, Jake Kaufman, Michiru Yamane, Dubmood
the list goes on...
Tip : provider links. I'd check this out and maybe add it to the waiting list for my radio! :p
These artists don't put up their music for free tho :P
Eiyeron's post made me think... Maybe we should get a markdown parser for the forum as md is much easier to type than bbcode. :P
Yes, I typed too much Markdown these last days. Sorry, I'll correct that right now. But yeah a MD parser should be very useful.

Yep Chris Huelsbeck is one of my favorite artist too. I wasn't sure if it was chiptune material, though, since the Amiga isn't 8 bit (unless I am wrong?) and I didn't realize he made C64 stuff too, but I guess we could mention him as well.
Chiptune = 8-bit. SNES music can be treated as chiptunes and thus, Amiga too.
But DUBMOOD FTW (ansd he seems to live in Marseille! :D)
I thought that the SNES wasn't chiptune at first because the instruments seemed to be wav samples rather than generated by the sound chip. But again, older consoles have some WAV samples too so I don't know.
It's chip music because the music is played back from a sequence of notes trough the chip in order to produce sound rather than playing back a stream. It's a bit like midi.
It's mostly midi-like. Even the GBA works on a similar system. GSF files can be converted (with oain) into midi+soundfont. Sane for SNES games.
Ok thanks for the info. That said, the GBA samples quality is rather bad IMHO. A lot of SNES games that got ported to the GBA saw their music quality reduced a lot. >.< Not to mention the lack of the SNES reverb effects, which makes things worse.
Well the main problem with the GBA is the crappy speaker and audio circuitry. If you try games in a good emulator then it sounds awesome.
One of the most evident way to hear the difference is taking a listen to Mother 3 remade soundtrack. Given the GSF (GBA sound emulation) and the midi + soundfont from the GSF, the sound is not the same at all...

Best song ever.
I know that song under a different name, but I forgot it. At least it's not listed as "Unreal Super Hero 3" on my PC.

Not really. I tried some games on an emulator and the sound quality was still crappy compared to the SNES. I think it depends of the game, though. Some were converted rather well, but others, such as the infamous Sonic 1 GBA port and Final Fantasy VI, turned out really bad.

Oh that's nice actually :D
Oh if you're talking about SNES remakes... Original GBA games have great audio. Look at the Pokémon games for example. :D
I definitively agree. I think it's because the SNES had all those reverb effects and sometimes allowed for higher frequencies, but the GBA has more compression on samples. They probably didn't care much about sound quality since they figured that most people would play games on a real console with no headset.
They don't have that much compression, it's the audio output which is bad.
Yeah as I said 99% of the audio quality loss on the GBA is due to crappy audio amplifier and speaker. :P
Then why emulators won't produce better GBA sound? O.O
Perhaps they emulate the crappy amp as well :P

They won't if they fidely emulate the sound output! :p
True, but you can hear a lot more details when playing on an emulator (noise and beat channels for example).
The sound is not filtered in the emulator. The GBA's sound output probably has some kind of analog filter before it goes trough the amplifier. This means you hear a lot of high-frequency noise when playing on an emulator.

This is SNES music but I like this rendition of Final Fantasy prelude theme (in a Mystic Quest Legend ROM Hack)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJn5UnfC0Ms
It's not really chiptunes, but chiptune-esque. But I really enjoy this one:
I really love the Pokemon FRLG soundtrack as well as all of the Phoenix Wright music.
Yesterday I tried Super Hexagon and VVVVVV and these have totally insane music as well. :D
Also not exactly chiptunes but still DSP based music are the Mario Kart Double Dash, Zelda Twilight Princess/Wind Waker/OoT and F-Zero GX soundtracks are absolutely awesome.
Actually, I should hear to FRLG soundtrack without the low-fi GBA sound output. I hope they have good quality samples.
Even on the real GBA it's awesome. Aaaaah the good old days. :3 Fire Red was my first handheld game ever (got it for my 9th bday with a light blue GBA SP :D).

Oh, mine was Sneaky Snakes, on GB. It oesn't work anymore as the ROM is damaged... :/
Do you mean a cartridge or an emulator ROM? If it's a cartridge it sucks because some games are hard to find or expensive. (and they more expensive as cartridges fail with the time, although it's rare that a game cart will fail really)

I meant my cartridge... The first emulator I got were given to me by my father. Snes9x and MAme32.
As far as C64 goes, I quite like this one
Although my favorite might be the robocop title song
Also, recently started playing castlevania aria of sorrow on emulator and got hooked on the game's music right from the starting area
Not a big fan of the Robocop one because it seems to miss one important part of Robocop theme for some reasons, which is what I remembered Robocop for, but I like the others quite well.
At least the NES Robocop theme had that part I am talking about, although at the wrong pitch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD6KKXJEJA8
That said I kinda like the Atari 8 bit Robocop Demo music version too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWB754Dif4U
I'll be honest I've never heard the original robocop theme, I just really liked that title theme in particular.
Castlevania music is the best :D
Super Meat Boy does have nice chiptune tracks and it seems they're are legit (mainly NES but some are from Game Boy). Here's my favorite, Betus Blues Retro.
Youtube tag does not seem to work. Just url's do sometimes
https://youtube.com/watch?v=xJoU-E9gR6Y
I dunno about the other tracks, but this does not sound like it could be done on NES or gameboy hardware w/o expansion chips (too many channels).
I like this one as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMYAmU7Mgsw
Strange, I see both of them on Fx mobile or Fx (linux). Yeah Lil' Slugger is rad as hell! :p
Yeah I don't have any problems seeing Youtube tags either. However remember that you need to use HTTP not HTTPS with Youtube tags. I'll listen to the track later.
Yup Super Meat Boy has great music. :D
Ok I listened to that one first track and it sounds pretty nice and NES-like, even though it has more channels. Could this be doable in Famitracker or a Sega Genesis tracker?
I think that's NES with maybe soundcard extensions like VRC7 or MMC5.
Now that you mention those chips, I remember one Japanese Famicom (Japanese version of the NES) game that used a special sound chip built into the cartridges to produce even better sound. It's called Lagrange Point:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUi8DqgWg2Y
I don't like those NES drums, though. They sound too much like GXSCC drums. I prefer the classic ones like in Super Mario Bros 1 or Zelda II or the special ones from Journey to Silius.
Talking about Silius, now that's another amazing piece of NES chiptune history. To produce the drums they used the digital channel and for the bass they used the wave channel, which gave SNES-like basslines. :D

That's the Konami VRC7, it adds (IIRC), one square wave and two sawtooth.
The problem with these chips is that they only work in Famicoms, so if you have a PAL/US NES, you can't enjoy the better audio.
Not even with custom game carts (like NSF players)? D:
Well iirc they use the extra pins that are present on the Famicom's cart connector but not on the NES. Maybe it's the opposite though, I don't remember.
Yeah IIRC that chip is only on the Japanese console. No wonder why the game never got ported here. I am willing to bet they could have at least tried to make the sound better than normal NES music by processing it via a cartridge sound chip, but it wouldn't have sounded as good.
Also that game was incredibly expensive IIRC compared to other games.
Actually the chip is in the cart, but it need the pins to work in the console. :P
Yeha, like Super FX needs the extended pins to work. At least they could have worked on a port like they did on Kid Icarus, originally out on FDS which has a wave channel, while changing a little the music. Same for castlevania III

Not sure if you meant this: They used the noise and triangle wave to create all of the drum sounds (cymbals, kick, snare) and the bass is on the PCM channel.
Yeah that's what I meant. Basically they kinda swapped both channel uses.
Forgot to mention this one, but I love the soundtrack for the Silver Surfer.
The sound seems a bit off in the video, though.
Woah, they had this game at the local store a while ago. I should check if they still have a copy. It definitively has epic music and very c64-like.
I'd warn you, it's a very difficult game. The music was amazing, but the gameplay was just terribly done.
Yeah that's what I am reading from Youtube comments and some reviews. Back then it seems that a lot of games were difficult only because of flawed gameplay. Maybe they just left gameplay like that on purpose in some games in order to increase game lenght.
I really like this song.

Actually the soundcliund version and the uCollective version are quite different. The SoundCloud one is the original, running at 140 bom. The uCollective is the same song, with the DMG underclocked to reach 110bpm and tweaked a little to tune it correctly. I prefer the uCollective one than the SoundCloud one. It's more gritty, less happy and have a feeling finish that is fantastic.
Oh right I didn't realize both were different. That said I tend to like happy songs more so I guess I might like the slower version less. :P

Also talking about Ys, here's an FM version of Valestine/Ballacetine Castle theme on a MSX tracker:

THe PC88 and the PC98 are made by the same company, NEC, but the difference is that the PC88 is based on a Z80 CPU whereas the PC98 had Intel CPUs (so it's kind of the japanese equivalent of the IBM PC). The PC98 is pretty known here for Ys and the first 5 Touhou.
Ah weird, because I didn't know there was Ys for the 98 then. Maybe the 98 can emulate 88 games? The version of Ys for the PC98 seems identical (even the music) to the 88.

I've come across so many chiptune favorites I couldn't possibly list them all. In the NES genre, the most recent gems I've found (using VRC6) are Esper Dream 2 and Madara. Neil Baldwin (http://dutycyclegenerator.com/) also made some awesome NES music, and I liked music by Alberto Gonzalez, too (who did music for GB Turok series, NES Asterix, Smurfs, etc.). Oh, and NES The Immortal (Rob Hubbard) and the Namco N106 audio games are cool. Sorry I don't have specific links/videos handy; I downloaded all of these as NSFs years ago from sources I no longer remember.
Lot of cool homebrew NSF stuff I've come across on forums and 2a03.org before it vanished, as well. I've come across a lot of great MOD tunes, too, though they're a huge PITA (I haven't found a single MOD player that plays all of them correctly, if at all).
I like metal (power metal ), some melodic chipset music, so when a guy made a remix of Inis Mona by Eluveitie on 8bits, I found it very good :)

Actually I think that remix was generated using GXSCC from either a MIDI found on the Internet or a MIDI that the guy made himself. However, this song came out pretty well (GXSCC is hit and miss because sometimes MIDI tracks are not converted properly and some people dislike it because it doesn't sound enough like the NES to them). Thanks for the sharing :) It's also my favorite Eluveitie track.
By the way I make power metal stuff, but it's not exactly chiptune since it was made using a Playstation 1 (which is a 32 bits console). I did make one chiptune song, though, called All the People in the House.

Yeah, it's striking what a couple of extra square waves and a sawtooth wave channel can do. The Famicon Castlevania III also used the VCR6, now that I remember, and had enhanced sound. The North America version we got had to scale back the music due to the lack of extra VRC6 channels.
Lagrange Point (VRC7) was a famous example of Konami sticking an entire Yamaha FM synthesizer chip on the cart and piping that through the analog audio pins. It was the only commercial game that used the sound, but there are quite a few homebrew NSFs that also use it. Namco N106 had a whopping
eight sampling channels; I've seen people on chiptune forums actually complain that it's overkill. :P

The VRC7 is kind of similar to the sound chip that's inside the Sega Genesis, so it can produce a similar sound. There were several Famicom games that had access to more sound channels, they're pretty interesting to look into.

IIRC Lagrange Point was also very expensive per Japanese standards because of the extra chip. If it had been sold in USA, I bet it would have costed as much as some late SNES era RPGs.
But yeah, Lagrange was truly the only Famicom game that used that chip entirely for sound. Some other games use extra sound capabilities but nowhere close to Lagrange. I was amazed when I saw that Silius just used the NES soundchip despite sounding much more complex than 8 bit stuff.
Loading up midi's in fl-studio and changing the sounds to be chippy is lame. Everyone can do that.

Yeah, that's what I've also heard regarding Lagrange Point. Journey to Silius probably sounds distinctive because of SunSoft using the DMC/DPCM channel for bass samples. Most games just used it for drums and digitized sound effects. Using the sampling channel for melodic instruments was tricky due to the limited playback rates available, which is why (or so I've read) some of the bass notes in Sunsoft games are slightly out of tune (though I can't personally tell). Recca also made pretty extensive use of that channel in its music, to the point of almost making it sound like it's using more channels than there actually are.
@Keoni: Yea, IKR? :D I might have a few more to drop in here. :D
@Travis and DJ: Sunsoft is know for using the sample channel (on NES) for bass. The drums (which are one of the main instruments usually sampled) are instead put on the triangle and noise channels. This creates a pretty distinctive sound from most other NES titles. Batman Return of the Joker, Ufouria, and Fester's Quest also make nice usage of the sampled bass.

I actually don't mind if people do that if it sounds good. I just don't like if they take someone else's MIDI file, replace the samples then claim it as their own remix/cover, plus doing this is prone to errors, such as too many channels or not sounding natural.
Also awesome video :D

Hmm for some reasons, music sounds different in this 2nd Return of the Joker video than in TASes I watched. Maybe the videos I watched were lower quality, which caused the bassline to become muddy and sound more like a triangle bass or something?
It's possible. I've noticed that stuff can sound differently depending on how the audio gets encoded. There are also some nes osts that are uploaded in "stereo" and it sounds way off compared to how it should.
Yeah I noticed that. Sometimes I wish I could listen to it in mono without echo but often it's the only video available.
Those are cool chiptune versions of Final Fantasy 9 music :D

(Btw, I think at first Final Fantasy IV was supposed to be a NES game, but then they decided to scrap it then made a SNES game instead)
Nice!
I love chiptunes, I usually listen to SlayRadio while coding (http://www.slayradio.org).
Lately I've been listening to New Retro stuff which can be nice. Like Lazerhawk for example:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpDn4-Na5co
Yep, Slayradio is definitively a must for video game fans.
Also yeah I noticed that nowadays people make music of older genres again, such as synthpop and italo disco. A lot of the new stuff is pretty cool and true to the original genre. :)
Here's a very nice one that bb010g linked to on IRC earlier: A c64 cover of Daft Punk - Get Lucky :D

Oooh! I didn't know about this topic. :)

The GBC does have stereo capacity. Let's hope that yourusic software does too.
I think it does, but the problem is will the sound clip really bad if I keep switching back and forth?
Also
@bb010g wow that Monkey Island song is awesome :O
Also it appears there actually was a MSX version of the first Final Fantasy. The music sounds much better than in the NES version IMHO:

That R-Type song is awesome.

You probably have heard it from RainbowFox.swf already, though.
Dang Auxcide got very quickly among my favorite chiptuners, listen to this : http://8static.bandcamp.com/album/pixel
My favorite is the song called Source. PIXEL is also very great. Overall, the album is pretty fun to listen to.
The combo Creation+Morphine is awesome too.
Yeah I agree, especially Morphine.
Also this song is kinda cool

Oooo I like that beat :)
One of my favourite chip musicians, Vince Kaichan, just released a new album: https://cheapbeatsmusic.bandcamp.com/album/power-tricks

By the way, has anyone ever played Demon's Crest for the SNES? https://youtube.com/watch?v=PsCPOJA8MCg Because while it might not be everyone's music genre, I felt the music was still really great and it really fit the game's dark themes.

Also, despite being on the SNES they still managed to make the music sound close to stuff you could hear in modern games.

Someone did PICO-8 covers of Double Dragon music and I thought it sounded cool. It reminds me a bit of the Japanese Sega Master System: https://soundcloud.com/gruber99/sets/double-dragon-pico8-edition
By the way, anyone ever listened to Lagrange Point soundtrack for the Famicom? This game uses a special sound chip that produces sound more advanced than what you normally hear on the NES, but the game was expensive and never came out outside Japan since the NES lacked the hardware to play such music.

I didn't have time to listen to all of this album, but so far it sounds really great utz. Imagine if some NES games had those songs :D
Oh yeah, I remember coming across the Lagrange Point soundtrack. I was trying out Famicom NSFs with expanded audio years ago, and when I opened this one, I was like, "Whoa, this is way different. Imagine buying an NES/Famicom game, turning it on, and having it sound like that." It's pretty awesome and one of my favorites. About the only thing that disappointed me a bit is that many of the loops are a bit on the short side.
Yeah true, also I heard the story isn't as great as some other NES RPGs or SNES releases of the time. But Konami wasn't known for making JRPGs so that has to be expected.
What I wonder, though, is how the game would sound like without the special soundchip?
You mean if they rewrote the music for the internal channels? That would be interesting, though it'd likely be a lot simpler. There were games like Castlevania III and Gimmick! that were ported from the Famicom to the NES and therefore had to have the music cut back and reworked.
Lagrange Point makes very little use of the console channels for its music (mostly just for percussion, which the Yamaha chip they used lacked), so if you simply disabled the chip (or modified the cartridge to plug directly into an NES), you wouldn't hear much besides that. This can be observed in an NSF player that allows you to individually turn off the sound channels.
Yeah that's what I was wondering, if it would have required reworking or not. I remember on the Sega Master System games sounded very different in North America compared to Japan.
Also I like this:

I think those SNES soundfonts used in the second video are from Mario RPG, right?
- Soundtrack of the C64 Game "Suicide express"
- Soundtrack of the (C64/PC/Android) game "Canabalt"
Also several 8 bit versions of recent songs.
You should post some videos of your favorite tracks in those soundtracks and the 8 bit versions of recent songs :)
Also I wish there were more 16-bit remakes of power metal music. There were F-Zero remakes of Nightwish music a few years ago on Youtube, but the guy removed them.
EDIT: Wait, it seems like someone re-used one of his tracks in his F-Zero video (but it's an actual gameplay video rather than just a picture so you hear the game noises):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxqS67ZqMmQ
The only thing I dislike in the song is that one of the tracks seems a little out of tune.

Ys series is an action RPG series which has most of my favorite chiptune songs ever and the instrumental remakes are often very great too. Note that the PC Engine/Turbografx 16 version is actually a Turbo CD game so the music comes from CD recordings rather than chiptune. In the chiptune versions my favorites are the Sega Genesis versions (which are often similar to the original, but has more bass)
I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen krelez mentioned yet, since he uploads great tracks.

Nice find 123outerme. It seems like a blend between 8 and 16 bits btw, with some non-chiptune tracks in-between but still with some chiptune elements, so perhaps that might be why it wasn't posted?
Also Utz yeah I didn't post Ys 1 because I couldn't find comparison videos of it. My favorite Ys 1 version, music-wise, is the FM77AV and 2001 PC remake, because they have the longer version of the Dark Fact battle song, which I always loved:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBjt8RJzik0
This version starts like the PC-8801 version, but there is an extra part. The 2001 PC OST is a remake of the FM77AV OST.

I wish someone made a ROM hack of Ys IV for the SNES that turned the game and music into Ancient Ys Vanished. It would be cool to hear how Ys I music sounds like with ys IV: Mask of the Sun soundfonts.

For odd reasons, I always mix up his avatar with yours. My bad >.<
Also Terranigma rules. I got a repro cart for the SNES but it doesn't keep my saves if I remove the cartridge from the SNES, which sucks. D: I need to find a way to play PAL games on American SNES consoles at some point. Also the rest of the Soul Blazer trilogy (which Terranigma is part of) is great. Soul Blazer is the first game and Illusion of Gaia is the second.

There are a bunch of tracks I dislike from him (mostly the funky / happy stuff), but the melancolic ones are so nice...
Other musics I like are the Beyond the Ice Palace and Xenon 1 musics on the Atari ST:

We're having the same discussion we once had on your blog (http://irrlichtproject.blogspot.fr/2015/05/daily-dosis-kjell-nordb-tribute-7.html), this "indre kildre" reminds me of "The small path", another amazing tune (http://anorien.csc.warwick.ac.uk/mirrors/oakvalley/soasc/soasc_mp3/MUSICIANS/B/Blues_Muz/Nordboe_Kjell/Small_Path_T01.sid_CSG8580R5.mp3)! My favorite 16-bit music of all time is Crazy Bus (Sega Mega Drive) theme.
Just kidding, I am listening to parts of the above right now and I like that Stormlord menu theme. I heard it before but I couldn't figure out where it was from. It's a shame that personal computers were not popular in the 80's in North America. It's quite ironic considering in 1983 the North American video game console market collapsed, so you would have expected the Commodore and Atari ST to take over until the NES came out.
As for the links you posted Garvalf, I always loved how some of the sound effects used in C64 and Atari ST music, and perhaps even the Amiga, were ahead of their time, especially compared to what we hear on the NES. Also that Wizardry song is just epic. I also like this version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_-riGlVOCs
Also I remember way back in 2001 or 2002 when I tried making a Wizardry style RPG for the TI-83 Plus, but it was mainly outside rather than in dungeons. I wish I didn't lose it.
On a side note I also like Wizardry V music. I really need to dig further in the early parts of the series to hear more of its OST.
Here is some Stratovarius in 16-bits style:

This is a friggin amazing rendition of Valestine Castle theme from Ys III, on the MSX FM chip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSYJGKDyZmg
For those who never heard how different the Japanese version of Castlevania III sounds like on the Famicom:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqyoTvZ5cOE
Yeah, Castlevania III on Famicom had a VRC6, which allowed for two additional sound channels. They weren't compatible with the American NES, so they had to "downgrade" the music to the usual 5 channels. Still had the best MMC chip to come out in the NES lifetime, though.
Yeah true. That said, Castlevania III music still didn't sound bad on the American NES. Also the most advanced Famicom music was probably Lagrande Point in Japan. In America it was definitively Journey to Silius:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKYnHV7Ks_s
For Silius, they just used the WAV channel for the bass instead of drums and used the channel they normally use for bass for drums IIRC.
This is not 100% accurate per Sega Genesis standards, but this is awesome. Imagine if Chrono Trigger had come out on the Sega Genesis with such soundtrack O.O
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeJPi4A_Qxs
Also yeah for those who never played Chrono Trigger, not only this game is a must try, but also we got rickroll'd (sort of) by the game from 1995 to 2008 without knowing.

^ The first one sounds like it has far too many channels for VRC6, though it might be possible to do something like it with N163 (which offers up to eight(!) arbitrary-waveform channels). The second one sounds like, I'm guessing, MMC5 audio expansion.
Discovered some nice tunes recently while watching Games Done Quick (https://gamesdonequick.com/)'s feed (https://www.youtube.com/user/gamesdonequick/feed):
Little Samson (http://www.zophar.net/music/nintendo-nes-nsf/little-samson) (mainly the "Golem's Theme" track)
Gremlins 2: The New Batch (http://www.zophar.net/music/nintendo-nes-nsf/gremlins-2-the-new-batch), especially the level music
(both NES Sunsoft games)
Shantae (http://www.zophar.net/music/gameboy-gbs/shantae), a little-known Game Boy Color game developed by WayForward and released by Capcom in 2002, a year after the Game Boy Advance had come out. Jake Kaufman composed some impressive stuff that almost sounds like it uses more sound channels than the GBC actually has!
The Game Boy Turok games make excellent use of the voices, too. Alberto Jose Gonzalez is a pretty cool composer; he also did music for NES Asterix and The Smurfs.
