Title: Platformer V2
Post by: Jokeriske on April 10, 2016, 01:16:09 PM
Platformer V2
Version 2.0

Hello, i'm currently remaking the original platformer game from Velocity Games (The one that @ben_g made)
I'm doing this because of learning purposes.
This is just a remake, Because i didin't had much time i coulden't make new mechanics :/ maybe later but not for now.
Currently i have only 3 levels, but all the mechanics and menu works just fine.
When i have more levels i will upload the link :D

Cool. I was curious about if your platformer was a new one or an update to the one Ben posted here a while ago.  Do you plan to add textures and sprites besides the :walrii:

maybe for the bossfights i might make pixel art textures and sprites, but i need to practice pixel art before that.

Yeah the first one that @ben_g made was hard :P

There are some pixel art available in the drawing and animation section of the forum here. But most is 8x8 (although you could scale the tiles up)

And yeah, Ben_g's platformer was hard O.O (not as hard as some other games I tried before, though)

And I'm always up to pixel art if you need suggestions. :)

By the way, will Platformer v2 require a Facebook account? Most CodeWalrus members hate Facebook and don't have an account (anymore) so they might not be willing to be forced to login or create an account just to play one game. Having a version of the game that plays on Velocity Games would be nice.

Also something that would be cool if this platformer is similar to the first would be power-ups to jump higher, move faster or stuff like that. And if you're a knight like in the sprites you showed before then maybe you could make the player get the sword before he can kill enemies that block the way?

We try to keep our games as accessible as possible, so any singleplayer games will not require any account, not even a Velocity Games account. Features for which an account is needed because it makes moderating easier will always be based on the Velocity Games account system, possibly with support for other account systems embedded in it (similar to how you can use the community system of the other platformer with a gamejolt account). Facebook is meant as an addition to the account system, so you can use your facebook account for those things and don't have to create a Velocity Games account.

That is actually the planned start of Valhalla (and it's even coded in the game like that, the combat demo uses a quick 'hack' to spawn the player with a sword). Idk what Jokeriske wants to do with this game though, but it may be cool if starting with no weapons would become a common theme in most of our projects.

I see. Good to hear, especially for single-player games. :) The other issue I have about FB games is that many of them spams my friends notification list with invites to play applications but I guess it depends how the game is setup.

Due to real life issues there will be some delay on development on this project, i will not abandon this but i need some space for real world stuff , ATM i have no clue for a storyline for this game, this is mainly a practice for this game engine.

fwiw, platformers don't really need much more story than 'bad guy chase him'  :P. Good luck with your life issues, I'll be looking forward to see progress on this.

(Also. Feel free to post about your life issues in the safe haven if you want to talk about it. You know where to find it.)

Good luck with your life issues @Jokeriske. Is that why you haven't been on IRC much lately? Also good luck with this project in the future. :)

Also about what @aeTIos said, it's important. When we play a platformer we want to jump straight into action. We don't want gameplay to be interrupted every 3 second by text like in Mega Man X4 and we don't want to spend 5 minutes reading a wall of text after every single stage like in Super Paper Mario and Kirby Epic Yarn. So a simple story briefing is better in most cases.

Yeah it's also the only project topic that appears in the top 10 busiest topic in the board stats page. The busiest in amount of posts is Walrii Fanart.

Hm I'm sure there must be a tutorial somewhere. I myself never used it so I would have and hard time getting used to Github but at some point I want to put my old code there. In  any case, though, you can always include the source with the game zip file :P
