Title: [calcs] Having win7 and win10 on the same PC ???
Post by: alexgt on July 20, 2015, 12:06:57 AM
I have no idea how to do it but I want to keep windows 7 when windows 10 comes out but still have windows 10 on my PC, so I would choose between win7 and 10 when my PC boots. How would I do that?

Why would you do this? It may be worth considering the reasons and then deciding to stick with one OS or another rather than wrangling with booting multiple OSes.

If you need it for compatibility reasons, a VM may be a better choice.

It's doable, you'd have to install Windows twice on 2 partitions and Windows' bootmgr would do the job, but as Nikky said, I'm not sure why you would do that other than compatibility reasons.

Yeah, use a VM like virtualbox to simulate windows ten to check it out.

Well I say this because my sister (@chelsey_dagger) did this for our old computer, it had winXP and linux mint and when you booted the computer up you could choose the OS you wanted (linux for my mom and windows for me)

I want to do this because I don't want to have any compatibility issues as you said, also a VM would be slower instead of having it installed right (sorry my knowledge is limited about this :P)

Your mom uses Linux? O.O

True, a VM would be a bit slower, depending on how much RAM and storage you give it, and how many CPU's you give it.

Welll, if you own a reg version, you get it. I should actually talk to my friend about getting his account so I don't have to share with another.

Probably not, but I expect W10 will work pretty well for a while when it comes out.

I might do that as well, or just use W10 regularly with W8 on a VM.

You probably will if you watch closely, usually, when setting up a virtual machine, I do it once, and remember it.

I should do that to, but I'm kinda excited for multiple desktops to improve multitasking. that's the one thing I likes about macs, ya know.

Linux and OS X had the feature since quite a while, nice to see Windows has multiple desktop support as well, it's pretty useful and I do that all the time on my Linux and Mac machines.

If you don't mind waiting a year, you could wait until then then only install Windows 10. By then, most recent softwares will have been updated to run on Windows 10, if they don't run on it already. I heard  that most stuff should run with no problem, though. Otherwise, a VM might be your best bet.

Caught in the act! Haha.

Yeah I should be able to help. For the most part though, Windows 10 should be completely compatible with anything that runs on Windows 8, and from what I know about the programs you use, there shouldn't be any compatibility issues. Just a learning curve as the design is quite different. There's not going to be any chance of bricking the machine with an upgrade, you just might want to back up your data beforehand (which you should be doing anyways!).

Dual-booting two versions of Windows is trickier than dual-booting Windows and Linux, but it can be done. *Edit to add:* Actually now that I think of it, the tricky part has been gone for years, it should be super straightforward. In any case, I can help you upgrade and/or dual boot next time I visit.

Try Linux. You shall be enlightened!

Or you might completely hate it because you hate the concept of having to install stuff from the command line. Like, what? What is this nonsense?

seriously though, I suggest you try out linux with Linux Mint, Fedora, or Antergos (in order from most user friendly to least user friendly. Antergos is basically Arch Linux without the install process). Some people will recommend you try first with Arch Linux, but don't, unless you are fully aware that it will be hard and you're willing to take the challenge, even as a newbie.

It wont brick them. Unless you majorly mess up the BIOS, all you will need to do is reinstall the OS.

Even if you do muck up the BIOS, a few motherboards have backup BIOS that they will restore from. Some other motherboards have the BIOS stored on a removable EEPROM that you can write a new BIOS to.

I was actually thinking of switching to linux. I've used linux VPS'ses before. I want to dual boot first so i still do things that absolutely require windows (like some games). I am also familiar with ubuntu. What disto should i get or should i just use wubi? :P

Thats my thinking to. Linux for dev, but Windows for games. :)

Avoid wubi at all costs. It's a very ugly hack.
That said, these days I'd recommend manjaro. If you want to get more in depth, arch Linux is awesome but requires more work to set up initially.

In the Debian world I recommend xubuntu or mint, or debian testing, if you want a funky distro check out fedora, or you could even go for a BSD flavor. The choice is broad so read up about all of these to choose whichever suits you. :)

+1 for Mint or Debian testing.

Fedora is firmly in the "bleeding edge technology, but less stable" camp, though they've now decided to do a better job at stability.
It's been a long time since they fed the Pulseaudio and KDE 4 trainwrecks of the time well before they were ready for prime time. The hardship of Fedora users helped make these technologies better for other distros, but still.
Upgrades from one distro version to the next one (6-8 months later, with short-lived support for upgrades) aren't always very smooth on Fedora either. Not a sample of scientific size, but I installed Fedora in a VM, in order to build libti*/gfm/tilp in it, which required installing build dependencies, of course. The VM repeatably crashed updating to the next Fedora version, I left it bitrot there.

And Ubuntu? I heard it's generally some "easier" distro since it has things like the Ubuntu market thingy.
Not that i need it easier, but i've used it before

Like many other persons, I stopped recommending Ubuntu in 2011, as Ubuntu's specific Unity interface is... not universally appreciated, to say the least.
The fact that Ubuntu is going its own way with Mir, instead of contributing to the common Wayland goal shared by the rest of the ecosystem, isn't universally appreciated either.

Any given user may like Unity better than other options, it's a matter of personal preference.
