Title: [calcs] HP Prime crashes when accessing memory menu. How to fix?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on November 04, 2015, 06:37:21 AM
HP Prime crashes when accessing memory menu. Does anyone remember how to fix that issue? Hard reset and soft reset won't do it. I press mem then it freezes for 1 second then the calc shuts off and reboots.

EDIT: Deleting Sokoban 1.03 solved the issue. But does anyone know how to prevent it from happening? Because it's not the first time this happens and the last time it did, even re-installing the firmware didn't help.

Sokoban is REALLY big if I am not wrong so maybe it was to do with RAM constraints but I doubt it. It is probably just a bug <_<

I had it happen with Trailblazer as well, though. I suspect that after a few transfers, the calc just runs out of memory and some files or the memory gets corrupted.

Yeah, I really don't know and you probably installed it when you first got your Prime since that was a while back and maybe the firmware couldn't handle it at that time :-|

Hm I suspect it could be some minor corruption that happened with the file system, but then when I upgraded, that corruption made things worse. In any case, always backup your calc content if you only develop on-calc, in case it makes you lose files.

Yeah, when developing Zampy's quest I ran into this issue <_< it didn't harm anything but I have multiple backups on calc and on the PC

So I'm getting this problem again now. Does anyone know how to fix it? Neither soft/hard reset could do it and I can't find the culprit program. Do I really have to reformat my entire calc memory every few month?

I was always having this problem, and the answer is to make your calc have the most amount of RAM possible. So delete any Apps or programs you don't use especially big ones and that did the trick for me ;)

So unused programs and apps still takes RAM? That's weird. I thought they were stored in flash. Anyway I just formated my calc to make the problem go away. I wish I didn't have to do that, though.

Yeah, that is one reason I prefer Apps. Sadly installation sucks >.<

Oh, I thought apps would take RAM too.

HP really needs to address this issue or at least add error messages for apps that fail to run. I mean, in some cases the old version of MinePrime from last fall or so would run, but then suddenly exit to some app thing, which tells me that an error occurred during program execution, but the calc didn't show any message.

What could allievate transfer issues is if HP allowed sending ZIP files without decompressing them or if they made app files into 1 file rather than a folder containing multiple files. Just for those reasons alone I decided to stick to programs and just keep RAM usage to a minimum. Even then, though, those dillemas and problems have kind of deteriorated my interest towards HP PPL programming over time and I always end up falling back to color TI models >.<

Only the program for the App is stored in RAM (and I think it only is when it is the App that is running)

That is why I do allot of development on an actual program and then copy it all over to the App's source when I am complete because no error messages bug me to :P.

I definitely agree that HP need to stream line their transfer setup, before I made that tutorial on how to send apps I spent a long time trying different methods and very few were successful so they definitely need more room for error :P

The issue there is that HP always pushes software changes to public before even getting past beta stage. They sure do some testing, but the calculator division runs with about 4 staff instead of the required 50 so a lot of the beta-testing process gets skipped due to lack of double or even triple-checking. THe few staff they have does a marvelous job considering the issues (and sometimes a better one than TI, if we remember the disaster that were the Nspire OS 2.0.0 and 3.0.1 upgrade), but it's a shame that HP releases stuff out to the public before making sure it's fully functional.

It reminds me of video game companies who often rush games to the market before Holidays >.<

Yes, I agree and props to the calc division in HP, I really feel sorry for them ._.
