Hardware / Re: Pasco Xplorer GLX Hardware
May 10, 2016, 12:08:43 PM
So after a bit of tomfoolery I found that the Nios II CPU architecture used with the Altera Cyclone FPGAs is a viable candidate for the GLX's instruction set. It would be easy to implement, uses a 32-bit word size, and supports compiled C/C++ code via GCC or something. Once I get time, I'll manually disassemble the first couple of bytes of the firmware and see if the content makes sense.

Generally, I like to force everyone using my work to use GPL because I don't think the things I do should be closed source. In general, open sourceness is better for the calculator community since I doubt anyone in the active community has pecuniary interests, and closed source projects hinder learning and development. But that's my opinion.

I've been waiting for this feature for quite a while.

This is not really my type of death metal
I don't think Meshuggah would consider themselves death metal at any point; they came from thrash metal (in their earlier work you can see Metallica's influence) and call themselves progressive metal.

Can confirm, haven't really played anything but UT2004 in the past year. At least 95% game time spent in UT2004.
What about games you played during your entire life? Did that only include UT too? :P

I played MechWarrior 3 back when Windows 98SE was still considered acceptable, but didn't start gaming again until Bosaik introduced me to UT99 and Cemetech introduced me to the far superior UT2004; overall the gap was about 7 years I spent not gaming. I've recently started playing Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and I am not sorry.
[edit] it's all adriweb's fault

Plasma screens are also capable of deep blacks, and the OLED TV at my house is remarkably pitiful in contrast. It all varies by manufacturer, but it's going to cost a LOT of money.

I've already accepted my robot overlords, as long as they run on Windows XP.

I've been using Philips SHE3595BK earbuds for the past six years; audio quality is good, they're small, and they're inexpensive to replace. My laptop uses a 4-pin TRRS jack for microphone input and headphone output, so I can use these without needing an adapter for the microphone.

  • UT2004. Lots.
  • Computer repair/maintenance
  • Amateur radio / shortwave listening
  • General tomfoolery with electronic circuits
  • Watching How It's Made
  • Having more swag than you

So, basically how to improve the TI-82 :)

Z80 processor with 32K RAM, user space maximized. Ferroelectric RAM for data, program, and OS storage. I/O provided by native RS232 with +/- 5V voltage levels, USB is for the weak. If you do include a USB port, it should only be for charging the battery or providing a virtual serial port to a connected PC (USB to serial converter within the device). Z80s can go into the 20 MHz range, so >= 20 MHz clock speed. Batteries should be two 18650 batteries to output 7.2 volts, which is regulated by the calculator to either 5V or whatever voltage is needed by the ICs (RS232 may need higher voltage). It must include an integrated charging controller, accepting 5V power from a standard power jack (such as microUSB). A backlit monochrome display of 160x120 pixels, we remember the last time we put a color screen on a Z80. Grayscale if you know how to program efficiently, a slow calculator is an angry user. Double-shot injection molded keys would be dandy. Solar power would require gigantic panels to recharge 18650 cells, so heck no. Maybe a simple tone generator connected to a headphone jack. It cannot have an internal speaker, nor a touchscreen. The serial port should be able to operate at 57600 baud, and any OS running on this thing should include commands to send/receive raw data to/from the serial port.
