Title: Product names/marketing fails [NSFW]
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on January 19, 2015, 11:28:43 PM
We have all seen weird product names before, as well as questionable marketing.  9_9 However, some really stand out more than the others IMHO. Do you know any that does as well?

-Buick LaCrosse: That car had to be renamed to Buick Allure in Canada because in Quebec slang, "se crosser" refers to self-love (if you get what I mean. Otherwise it's not safe for work/minors/school). For some reasons, it was renamed back to LaCrosse a few years later, though.

-Microsoft Zune: Caused massive lulz in Quebec because in Quebec French slang, the word zoune is a synonym of the male genitals.

-ASUS: In Quebec slang, we often use À instead of Elle for third-person verbs used with female gender, and the verb sucer (to suck) is sometimes used for 18+ stuff. So ASUS sounds like "À suce".

-Gerber: Baby food product. In France, they have a word "gerber" which refers to throwing up.

-More can be found here although some are Chinese so maybe they don't count lol http://justsomething.co/31-worst-product-name-fails-ever/

Nope, it's called Gerblé, sells a lot of wheat based produts or fruit products but there was a joke ad made by Les Nuls which rename the brand as Gerbé and show to the people "un petit pot pour bébé Gerbe". Cue visual pun with the thing " puking" with sound effects.

Well it was actually released as Gerber elsewhere. IIRC it never made it to France because of the name, but maybe it was renamed then rereleased as Gerblé or you are refering to something else?

Japanese are also horrible at English, though not as bad as Chinese. Generally in Japanese the message comes through, but the sentence structure is horribly mangled x.x

Indeed. Even in Zero Wing for the Mega Drive (I wish we had that game in North America) you still can understand what they say during the intro. That said, it depends who made the translation because I still remember that bootleg Pokémon Green Engrish ROM from a few years ago which was completely broken.

Do you mean that Chinese people are worse at English than Japanese people or do you mean that they are worse at Chinese language than English? Because if it's the former, then I wouldn't want to play a video game nor watch an anime that was made in China and translated to English >.<. I mean, many older SNES and PS1 RPGs from Japan had horrible English localizations, so imagine how bad they would be if they were from China. >.<

Regarding China failing at doing stuff, I think for electronics and stuff like that it's more because they always try to save as much money as possible when producing stuff, so they can sell it for cheaper, but the result is that it breaks faster often.

Nowadays there are professional translators that do it and most translations are great quality tho.

Hmm that's weird. In russian "die" means "give". It's an interesting coincidence how both of these words will both work in the context. Also: I guess this is a necrobump? :P

"Дай" is pronounced " die" and is the command form of "give". Alot of the time lazy russian internet users use the Latin alphabet instead of the Cyrillic one. So yea... :P The russian word for "die" would be pronounced "umerie", long u and long I. (Once again here I give the command form of the verb)

O well nvm then. But the command is the form of a verb that is used when giving commands. (It's technically called "imperative") So for ex in Latin (idk French) "audio lupum" would be "I hear the wolf" but audi lupum" would be me ordering you to listen to the wolf.
Title: Re: Product names/marketing fails
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on August 29, 2015, 11:51:37 PM
Oh right, imperative verbs. In French it's kinda used as orders too. For example, "Lose the game"

And wow... now I just saw your signature, so losing was inevitable <_<

So I just discovered that when the movie The Matrix was first promoted in France, the title they used at first there was "Les Jeunes Gens qui Traversent Les Dimensions en Portant des Lunettes à Soleil", which means "The young people who travel through dimensions wearing sunglasses."

Good thing they changed it, because that would have been the worst movie renaming in another country ever O.O

This is not a marketing nor a translation fail, but I cannot wait for the day when one of those pie companies will hire a new English to French translator guy who doesn't do his job properly *.* . This will be the most epic translation fail.

There was one (in a local chain) that said:

"Banana's bye the each - $10"

Here are my problems with that:

Bananas cannot own anything, let's face it.
Someone needs to go back to first grade and learn homophones.
"by the each" is just widely-used incorrect English
$10 for three bananas is just too freaking expensive.

That is one hilarious animal sign

It is from The Wilds (https://thewilds.columbuszoo.org), in the carnivore habitat area.

They have an insanely monstrous plot of land that they can let animals graze on, and you can take tours on decommissioned school busses. They have guides that are very knowledgeable and I recommend it very much. The scenery is pretty good, as it is pretty much in the middle on nowhere. (I got some cool pics, and will probably be posting on Cemetech later today after I am done touching them up)
