Lolno. I originally ran KDE, then I switched to MATE with the window manager swapped for Awesome, but since my mate app usage declined afterwards I just removed it. Ran awesome standalone for a few months but now I use i3 and love it even more.

My favorite WM is and will always be Openbox with tint2 and some status text in the background (Crunchbang config).
And my favorite Linux is Debian.

I like tiling window managers though because they position and size the windows for you. Less time wasted and less mouse usage (did I mention I didn't like the mouse for things other than gaming and gimp/CAD/some lazy web browsing ?).

I am not home but my wallpaper is pretty much the same as months ago, so I just need to find my desktop screenshot on Omni and cross-post it. It's quite messier than it was before, though. I néed to do some file sorting. :P

Actually, I'm more sorted and clean on Linux than Windows. I don't understand why, maybe because Windows is messier than me? (Like the Documents folder than every program likes to clutter)

I think it would look better if the walruses were scaled up properly in an image editor, with nearest neighbor filtering, which would get rid of the blur.

As for my desktop, here is it:

Fedora is super easy to install.

Arch is also pretty easy if you have a bit of experience and have installed it before. Usually, installing Arch takes me about an hour (probably less).

The reason I dont have much on my desktop is because GNOME has a huge menu that appears when you press the windows key, with a dock, search bar, app drawer, workspace switcher, and all sorts of goodies.

It seems like ASM. Hard to get used to if you're used to higher-level languages, but not that hard to program for once you get the hang of it (depending of the game, of course).
Title: Re: Post your desktop !
Post by: Snektron on June 27, 2015, 10:00:51 AM
Yeah, ASM requires a wholeother form of programming :P
Though stack machines are not that hard if you know RPN. But most machines are a register based machines with a stack

(stack machine = processor that only has a stack to operate on, and for example an opcode 'ADD' would pop the two top-most items of the stack, add them and push the result)
(register machine = processor that uses various "registers", essentially a few variables, to operate on. 'ADD' would for example add register 0 and 1.

You'd be surprised. The z80 already has like 300 instructions (though thats unique opcodes... Things like ld a, b and ld b, a are considered different things)
Also the JVM instruction set has a few hundred too iirc

Yeah it depends on the CPU. Modern instruction sets are pretty large and their design varies (the eternal cisc vs risc), plus now there's a cload of extensions. This is what I have on my pc as extensions :

Weird, many people claims ASM is easier to memorize than basic due to having less commands.
Title: Re: Post your desktop !
Post by: novenary on June 28, 2015, 12:05:46 AM
Well in practice you don't use all the commands all the time. There's a core group of instructions that are used for most stuff then you have those that are more application specific.

Yeah, it's not that hard if you know what to do. Prepare partitions, mount partitions, bootstrap the base packages (also whatever package you want), chroot in it, create accounts, configure system to your likings, install and configure GRUB, reboot, it's pretty straightforward. So straightforward they deprecated the installer a few years ago.

No, those are really per processor added opcode. For example, there is well known extensions such as mmx, sse, or avx. Not all processor support  them, it depend. (usually, it vary from the gamme of product, higher cpu are bigger and support more extension).
They ussually speed up really precise operation ( in case of avx, it is the vector processing)

Off topic Tolkien "rant"

Turin Turambar son of Hurin of the house of Hador. One of the few heroes to commit suicide in Arda though. Nicknamed the Blacksword and has the Dragonhelm, so I think it's him.

You never know. Some people actually suspect that Windows 9 was actually made but was canceled because even Microsoft found that it sucked so bad. IIRC the real reason was because every two version sucked so they decided to skip one, but I could be wrong on that too.

I didn't mind using it on other people's computers, but I heard that the minimum requirements were 1 GB of RAM and even with that it was unreliable it seems. Seven seemed less bloated and I still use it now. Yay for Fullscreen Starcraft Brood War :D

I use redshift on my desktop and CM's built in equivalent on my phone. It's pretty effective, and kinda annoying that I can't use it on my tablet because it makes the display so laggy because there's no hardware to back it up unlike on my phone (my phone has color control in the LCD driver). <_<

For real ? You like OS X better than Windows ? Because I've been using Windows (and Linux, don't worry :P) for years (mostly for games) and I don't have a lot of complaints, apart from the fact it is 99% useless (it's just supposed to run games :P)... But I've been using OS X for less than two days and I already have a lot of complaints :P

And thanks about the wallpaper ^^
Title: Re: Post your desktop !
Post by: novenary on September 27, 2015, 03:02:47 PM
I only like osx because it used to look pretty and it's *NIX and I'd choose *NIX any day over windows. :P And yeah, I sometimes use windows for games too.
Title: Re: Post your desktop !
Post by: Hayleia on September 27, 2015, 03:11:27 PM
Well, it might be *NIX but it's far more advanced than Windows in terms of commercial bullshloop. I mean, just think about the installation of your OS.
To install Windows, boot a CD (or USB stick or whatever) and follow the instructions, which include agreeing to an license, choosing the hard drive maybe, setting up an user account on the PC, and ok, it's done.
To install an easy to use distro (I mean, not Arch :P), same, boot something, follow the instructions and ok, it's done.

To install OS X, follow the instructions, but wait, here, it's asking for your Apple ID. You don't have one. You make one. You give it to your computer. Now it says "this ID has never been used on the App Store". Of course, you're not letting me use OS X so I can't use my ID on the App Store. I go to the App Store on a PC and it says "you can only buy on iOS or OS X". Well ok, I borrow someone's iPhone to get Doodle Jump for free (just to use that Apple ID). Nope, now it says "you never used that Apple ID on iTunes". Well ok, I go to iTunes on a PC and now it says "gimme your card number, even if you don't buy anything, I don't care".
And yeah, once you've done all of this, you can install OS X. I can tell you that wasn't a good first impression for me :P

Windows 8 introduced the same bullc by almost forcing you to have an ms account. :P It's not easy to find the option to continue without one, and most people will end up creating yet another email they don't have any use for.

I used Dolphin to take a screenshot on Spear Pillars on Brawl (meh, only game with that map), and on Final Destination for the background clouds, then put all of this together and edited it with Paint.NET :)
And lol, I don't know which one is better between Eclipse and NetBeans but I don't care, I'd be happy with none of both since I don't like Java anyway :P

Wut ? I have Windows 8 on two of my computers and I don't remember anything mentionning an MS account. Maybe I found that option you mentionned, but then it means it wasn't so hidden. And even if it was compulsory (which is not the case) at least they don't ask you for your card number on iTunes to activate your ID on the App Store to activate it on your computer -.-

I used to use no MS account on Windows 10, but I decided to login in with my MS account to use Cortana, which does not work...

When you first set up windows 8 and up, it asks you to log into your ms account to access the windows store and other things. And apparently cortana too now. I don't care for any of those things (I just want games) so I skipped it but the option to skip logging in is hidden under "I don't have an account" which is the sign up form. Not the most visible thing ever.

Ok, well I don't even remember about that step :P
And indeed, I don't care about those things either (that's what I meant by "99% useless"). But same about Apple, I don't need iTunes, the App Store and stuff, so why would I need an Apple ID, and why would I need a credit card associated to it ?

Thankfully, Twilight on my phone (which I just re-installed) doesn't cause much lag it seems and it's pretty nice.

Also it's a shame that new Windows/Mac OSes tries to force you to create an account just to use the OS. I am 100% sure that it's MS/Apple's stepping-stone into forcing people to get an account. As for Apple requiring a credit card even when not needing one, yes I ran into that issue once. >.<

Also, to people who hate Eclipse, remember one thing, though: Sam Heald, the popular creator of many TI-83 games and ports, was involved in its development around 2003. Regardless of if you like Eclipse or not, you should at least recognize it for that. :P

Oh cool. I remember that you had to go on itunes and try to download a free app then accept to register an account and then it didn't force you to add a credit card. That was somewhere in 2008 or 2009 though (when I got my ipod touch 2g).

Well then, that option was better hidden than Windows's "no account" option, because I didn't set up any account for Windows but I made one for OS X :P
And still, even without paying, it still requires an account, while Windows may try to convince you but doesn't force you to have one.

Nowadays you can just select "No card" or something. But then of couse you'll be able to get free things only.
Oh cool. I remember that you had to go on itunes and try to download a free app then accept to register an account and then it didn't force you to add a credit card. That was somewhere in 2008 or 2009 though (when I got my ipod touch 2g).
In 2012-14, it depended of which country you lived in. In Canada I was forced to have a credit card unless I just entered a gift card number, but by then, in USA it was possible to do it without needing a gift card number. I don't know about now.

Windows 8 introduced the same bullshloop by almost forcing you to have an ms account. :P It's not easy to find the option to continue without one, and most people will end up creating yet another email they don't have any use for.
Well, I just installed Windows 8(.1) today for at least the third time in my life (I have three PCs with that on them so at least 3 times, but maybe more since I might have started some installations several times) and I didn't see that option. I never had to enter/create a MS account, at any moment.

Title: Re: Post your desktop !

Lol, do people really send death threats for that ? :P
Well, I don't think so because as I said, it's the third computer on which I install Win8 (and for the two other ones, I know I had to start over several times) and I really don't remember doing anything to avoid something as annoying as using a MS account.
Or maybe it was at the very very early beginnings of Win 8 then.

(However, I saw a lot of "spying" options in the Win8 setup so the claim that Win10 is a spy might not be more true for 10 than for 8).

Lol Darkest at first I thought you decided to switch to just using text-only or command-line. I can't imagine how weird it would be to do all my daily computer tasks just on command consoles, including pixel art. Ok, I am a bit exagerating now, but yeah I kinda prefer having some UI, preferably not overdone, though, so my computer won't lag.

Eh no I don't know what that is. It's mostly cause there's not enough space for it to be horizontal, also it's missing it's stand so it's rather low if it's not propped up on something.

It's a shoot-em-up for the Wii with a mode that lets you play with your TV rotated 90°. At first I never bothered buying it because I thought it actually required rotating my TV sideways, but I recently discovered that you can play in regular mode too.

Make sure the rotated screen is being held tightly in place so it won't fall off. >.<

But it had some bugs and I deleted it today and replaced it by Fedora.
I personally dislike Archlinux as a daily used OS, as it is too unstable for me.

Isn't Archlinux like mostly command based, but offering much more freedom as a result, including rendering the OS unuseable by accident?

Pretty much. There is no automatic installation process, so you can customize how it's getting installed in every point.

Basically all Linuxes are quite free. You can change the DWM and many other things on most distibutions. I personally find arch more of a hassle than a good.
One can just go ahead and take a Linux that comes with a lot and just customize it. And you can render every OS unusable by accident.

Command line doesn't mean old-school though. For some tasks it can be pretty powerful, like batch processing, which is a pain to do in GUIs. Also there is the problem that most GUIs are anti-keyboard and some people find working with the keyboard only a lot more comfortable (me included). When you're used to it it's a lot faster than mouse based interfaces.

I don't know how you guys do it. Even @Patrick Davidson seemed to navigate in less than a second from a directory to another via command prompt when I was with him and he was searching through old IRC logs, same for opening files O.O.

I guess it didn't help that since my childhood, anything I did on computers was via GUI's, even on Windows 3.1.

On a side note I am really tempted to theme my Windows 7 machine after 8-bits stuff, but I need to make sure it doesn't cause eye cancer.

I have Windows 10 installed via bootcamp (you can see the BOOTCAMP drive on the desktop) and I use VirtualBox for Linux or Windows 7. I'm also going to be getting a 2-in-1 laptop/tablet thing from my school, and that will have Windows 10 on it too. Since I mainly use the Nspire, it using macOS hasn't been an issue, as the Student Software works just fine on it.
Title: Re: Post your desktop !

I never heard of Bootcamp software before. I see, though. That's good at least. As for Windows 10, while it still has some weird quirks, it's not as bad as some people might think, from a Windows user perspective. I like it much better than Windows 8 and 8.1.

Also yeah I always forget that you use the Nspire and not z80 calcs. On Mac, though, I remember in 2014 that the latest version of TI-Connect Mac was from 2004 and no longer ran on newer Mac computers or something.  For HP Prime users it's even worse since HP Connectivity Kit and Virtual Calculator are Windows-only.

I guess Arch is more for people who love command consoles and old-schoolness. :P
I generally never use CMD except for very basic tasks. I do all my programming in an IDE, which is much easier then having a window for editing, another for compiling, as well as a file browser, etc. Generally unless CMD is already open to the correcg directory and I know the exact file path, using a visual GUI is much easier, and faster.

THe issue with CMD is when not using batch files, it can take a while to navigate between some folders, especially if you can't remember the paths by heart.

cmd is the best. At least for me. If you don't need that GUI, that is.

But what you do, DJ, is make those paths nice and easy, one directory from th starting directory. I prefer navigating folders woth cmd rather than a file explorer; there is no load time, and doing all that typing makes you feel cool :P

There's an Gravity Falls anime? O.O  I guess I played too many calc games because for me, Gravity Falls/Run/Guy is that one game where you move non-stop in a 2D side-scrolling map and must switch gravity with the 2nd key. :P

I'm not sure it's the same Gravity Falls (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_Falls) we're talking about.

Yay, managed to reinstall macOS on an external hard drive after the internal was pratically destroying itself and crumble under errors. Spent like 3 days trying to do that. Oh well. Now it works... Sometimes it's better restarting from scratch.

Completely reinstalled my Notebook.
Now there's Fedora (main OS) and Windows 7 (for Office, SolidWorks, Premiere, etc.)

Here's the Windows 7, that took all day long to install (due to UEFI and driver problems):

The sun in the left half would look weird I think.

I used Fedora before. And before I used Windows 10. I am now going to dualboot my Notebook with Elementary OS and Windows 7 :D

Good ol' laptop from 2005 (on which I added 2GB RAM) dualbooting good ol' XP and modern Arch Linux. Sway's still the best WM out there. Still have some issues with the wifi (it worked correctly in Knoppix!), but otherwise it works.

Wallpaper related. Yeah, it's real cold here in Canada.

I'm still happy with i3, sway lacks some features that make it unusable for me like mouse grabbing (how am I supposed to play games like that ;_;). Plus it's made by the man. :P

Nice desktop juju, but I assume that the transparent windows must make it hard to read text located on Miku's skin

Not that bad. Key is setting up urxvt's background opacity just right.

Also fixed the wifi, somehow NetworkManager choked on the device's MAC address so I just gave it the ID (wlan0 or whatever it is) instead. And for those who use sway or i3, conky works real well with the bar, just set out_to_console=true, out_to_x=false in conky and pango_markup enabled in sway to use <span> and change text colors.

Overall, I don't really intend to game on that laptop, I'd just go in XP instead for that, but sway works real well for what I want to do and the specs it's running on.

Ah ok. I remember when I used XP and stuck with the default wallpaper for like the entire time I had that computer except a brief period of time around 2007-08 when I started making music again. It turned out that having a different wallpaper caused epsxe emulator to lag more <_<
