Title: Calculator Community Music News/Showcase #1
Post by: pimathbrainiac on May 28, 2016, 07:10:21 PM
Hello everyone! Now that school is out, I once again have time to devote to news articles, and today, I present onto you a new occasional news series: the Calculator Community Music News/Showcase. I figured that it's about time the many talented musicians, composers, and producers in the community get recognized. This first article will cover the musicians themselves, and less so the individual tracks. In the future, individual tracks released between now and the next article will be showcased. So without further blabbing, let's get to the features!

GTemples27
GTemples27 has started composing his own music very recently. Here (https://musescore.com/user/9830636/scores/2162496) is his first piece. He has some potential to make some really great music in the future, and I wish him the best of luck doing so.

@unknownloner
Our friend unknownloner is a cool dude. He also began producing some pretty cool DnB music around February. While he hasn't posted much of it on the forums recently, it is worth mentioning that his Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/unknownloner) has been pretty active. His stuff is worth the listen.

@aeTIos
Guitar player and CodeWalrus admin aeTIos has been experimenting in the last few months with a cover of "Sweet Child of Mine" and a Funk-style track. Check out his Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/richard-van-dijk-5) to hear what he has put together.

Velocity Games
The guys at Velocity Games have been working on the game "Valhalla" for a while. Recently, they composed a theme song (http://youtube.com/watch?v=fRunPuEk6io) for Valhalla that is worth listening to.

@matrefeytontias
Matref has always been a metal man. And dang, he slays at guitar. Just check out his Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/matrefeytontias) to hear what I'm talking about. He recently got someone else to help with mixing to increase production quality, and I certainly believe this decision is paying out.

@JWinslow23
JWinslow is a great singer. He also is a great mathematician. Just check out his latest track (https://clyp.it/ppcj41zt) about how tau is superior to pi.

@utz
This guy just loves making music on everything, especially calculators. His tracks are on his Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/irrlicht-project), and they're pretty awesome.

@DJ Omnimaga
If I didn't mention DJ, I might as well have not written this article. This CodeWalrus admin has been producing music using MTV Music Generator/Music Generator 2000 for a long time. His BandCamp (http://djomnimaga.bandcamp.com/) certainly proves it.

@pimathbrainiac
Shameless Self Plug Time!
If you didn't know already, I compose a lot of music myself. My Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/pimathbrainiac) showcases some of my best stuff, as well as some of my older, not-so-best stuff. In some exciting news, one of the pieces I wrote, "Shattered Glass," is currently being considered for publication. Whether or not it will actually be published is yet to be seen, but it is a huge step for me, and I couldn't have gotten as far as I have without the community's support and feedback!

That wraps it up for now! See you in the next (calculator/programming related) article!

Thanks for the mention, I'm not worthy :P

And wow, I didn't know your songs were up for publication, that's awesome ! Best of luck with that !

Sheoot. That was totally autotune. The raw tracks for my song sound laughable (then again, the finished song does too :P ).

Nice. I did some music too, but last one I did (https://soundcloud.com/juju2143) was a few months ago.

Nice post pi, music is a minor part of the community's activity but it's still pretty important.
Looking forward to the next ones.

Cemetech, Omnimaga and CodeWalrus both always got a lot of musicians in the past. I guess it's part of our artistic culture.

Hey, thanks for the mention! I haven't really been active in any of my normal online communities recently, not quite sure why :/. I just graduated though so that's fun!
Maybe one of these days I'll get around to making another full track instead of just random bits and pieces.

Shoutout to @utz definitely for some crazy 1-bit music.
I tried to recreate part of one of his 1-bit demos in FL and it was way harder to recreate the sound of the lead than I expected (https://soundcloud.com/unknownloner/osaka-rmx) (I believe he made it anyhow, correct me if I'm wrong @utz)

Congrats on graduation @unknownloner and nice to see you again. I wish you were still around since we tend to post a bit more eurobeat and Japanese stuff lately. :P And yeah a new track would be nice :D. As always, feel free to showcase your stuff in the music section and feel free to idle on IRC again :) (remember we're on EFnet now, though, not Freenode nor Omninet :P)

Oh, I thought you were still on one of those two networks. I knew you did the move to Omninet a while back but I recall you still idled in the Freenode channel back then :P

I don't think I've ever even connected to Omninet, much less moved to it. Did my IRC bouncer grow an AI and decide to switch IRC networks while I wasn't looking or something?

Aww, thanks @pimathbrainiac for the shout-out, and thanks @unknownloner for the Osaka cover, you did well mate!

Making 1-bit sound in a DAW is indeed not so easy. However, there's a number of VSTs that can help with that. I'd especially recommend the 1bitstudio (http://shiru.untergrund.net/files/1bitstudio.zip) package from Shiru (one of the best 1-bit/8-bit toolmakers out there and also a great musician, check out his Player Alone (http://shiru.untergrund.net/albums/player_alone/) album if you like VGM metal/hardrock).

I don't know lol. I just remembered once when we talked about discontinuing the Omninet channel at irc.omnimaga.org, then you joined it just a few minutes later :P.

Personally I had no issue making 1 bit sound with HoustonTracker, but I was never into trackers as much as I was into softwares like Music 2000, and I never was comfortable with DAWs. I used them before to make songs, but I always ended up switching back to Music 2000 because it let me make music 5 times faster.

He, nothing wrong with sticking to what works best for you. I'm not a big fan of DAWs either, though I occasionally use Neil Sequencer (https://bitbucket.org/bucket_brigade/neil), an obscure but powerful Jeskola Buzz-like workstation. Where occasionally means like once a year, if even.

Btw, another CW member that makes music is @Keoni29, check his soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/koenvanvliet).

I never heard of Neil Sequencer actually. I should check it out at some point, since it seems free. I heard about Jeskola Buzz, though, since someone on TIMGUL was using it back then.

Also I remember Keoni29 music, and it was pretty great. It's a shame that he lost interest in CodeWalrus, though :(

Dang, I forgot about his chiptunes. They are, indeed, amazing.
/me mutters something about being incompetent at newsing while wondering why he has this job.

For me It's hard to follow members stuff if they never post it on one of the major TI sites, since that's where I go the most <_<
