Title: I'm done with calc programming, but I am sticking around
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 03, 2017, 04:40:20 AM
So those who don't have access to the safe-haven sub-forum are probably unaware of it, but several months ago, I stopped programming softwares entirely, with future game projects being 100% restricted to pre-made game engines such as RPG Maker 2003. The reason why is because since spending so much effort to write working code was never really my cup of tea, the only reason why I still made calculator games was because I loved designing them. There was a period of time where I regained interest in programming, thanks to the TI-84 Plus CSE/HP Prime release, but I eventually got bored of it again.

In addition to that, I've kind of transitioned to a new social life over the years and the transition shall be complete in a not so distant future (I won't get into details), which kinda had its toll on the free time I used to allocate to hobbies, so as a priority, calculators and programming in general eventually ended up last.

So from now on I will remain active on CodeWalrus mainly to chill, while maintaining the site, with my only real future calculator contributions being the Monthly Projects Award and commenting on projects.

I'm also looking into selling my entire calculator collection in the near future (most likely the entire lot in bulk, for parts or repair, not one by one), but I might keep the TI-84+, TI-84+CE and HP Prime at the very least.

So in summary, after 15 years of calculator programming, I am now calling it quit, but I am remaining active on CodeWalrus.

I am saddened by the fact that you are no longer programming, but I am happy that you are sticking around AND selling your calculators.
I might be interested in a few of those :P
What does it mean  I'm your signature when it says that your Nspire CX is sorta broken?

The battery has been nearly dead ever since I bought it brand new. After 2 weeks of non-use it goes from 100% charge to 0% by itself, regardless of if it's completely turned off or in standby mode. My CSE and CE don't have this problem (the CSE can go months with a full charge even when never used) It also cannot run certain softwares that every other CX other than @critor 's can run perfectly, such as @gameblabla 's Picodrive emulator, so in some ways, the calculator NAND or something else in it might be damaged or partially bricked.

Well, that's too bad. D:

For the CX, the battery behavior is normal, and the rest sounds like a small software issue that I've already offered help for. :P

It was a while ago and I totally forgot what was the help lol. In any case, if the battery behavior is normal then then TI-Nspire hardware is a piece of garbage lol. I mean, it actually makes the Playstation Portable idle battery life look amazing.

Which reminds me, I have zip files of my old calc projects available for download in another thread somewhere from when my physical health deteriorated for a while last fall and winter. I should append them to this topic when I find them again (they're on telegram.codewalr.us or something)

Does that mean it will be cheaper? :P  :ninja:

Well, it depends if I decide to sell individual calcs at all rather than just the entire lot of 26 at once, but I would need to calculate my total price again since I originally did not plan to sell the fx-7000G, TI-81 and TI-85 (not that it would have changed much, though).

Oh, well i definitely won't buy all of them, lol  :w00t:

Will you still look at doing the occasional sprite mockup?

Maybe, if I get ideas. There is a very slim chance that I go the Zera/Grendel route in the future if I ever get a considerable amount of ideas. What I mean is how Zera basically drew all Escheron sprites, maps, storyline, decided of names, gameplay, etc, but left the entire coding task to Iambian. But I doubt this will happen anytime soon, considering I can barely find new ideas and motivation for Superstar Hero.

On a side note, I found my calc project zip files again if anyone is willing to continue them.

I am surprised Zera pulled this off, as most programmers would want to write their own story :/

BTW is the omnimaga user "Escheron" an alias of Zera???

Well, in a normal development team, you have spriters, musicians, programmers or integrators, designers, story writers, etc, so to be honest I am not too surprised that calculator projects could have worked the same way. It's just that the TI community has always been so small that the fact Zera could find someone who is interested to just write the code is remarkable. Most calc projects that are successful are made by just 1 single person.

And yes, Escheron is Zera.
