Title: mezzacotta: The Good Parts
Post by: bb010g on August 08, 2016, 07:42:40 AM
I just stumbled upon a webcomic called mezzacotta (http://www.mezzacotta.net/). It's got a virtually infinite backlog and updates every day, so I figured that it wouldn't be a bad idea to try and start up a thread where the good ones can be linked. If you want to check it out, your best bet is probably just to read random comics (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=random) until a good one comes up. Don't forget to rate them all; it helps hone the algorithm for the future. (I think.)

To start things off:
9th September, 1087 AD (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=1087-09-09): William the Conqueror's death. Freakishly relevant.
20th August, 1991 AD (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=1991-08-20) (c/o @Juju): Juju's birthday and the independence of Estonia.
22nd March, 3057 BC (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=-3057-03-22): Buzzwords vs. politics!
2nd November, 2006 AD (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2006-11-02): An alien visitor appears.
17th November, 1390 AD (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=1390-11-17): Is this enlightenment?
9th January, 2007 AD (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2007-01-09): Pennyworth's a person?
7th August, 2016 AD (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2016-08-07): Trust no one.
2nd December, 662 BC (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=-662-12-02): Spell her? I hardly even knew her!
31st March, 2007 AD (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2007-03-31): I guess that means it's about him.
8th April, 2007 AD (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2007-04-08): Sleep deprivation is a serious issue.
15th October, AD 233 (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=233-10-15): I'm getting stoner vibes here.

I was curious when I saw one of them had a 1991 timestamp, but then I saw the BC dates and was kinda confused. Does it really use some algorithm to generate comics by itself or did someone just have too much free time on his hand? Some were funny, though :P

Also the author should add some variables or dictionary exceptions, so that for example, comics with dates prior 1900 are less likely to have references about electricity, for example. It would probably requires excluding a whole range of words based on the year, though.

Yeah, it's definitely procedurally and randomly generated.

Probably would kill some of the charm of it.

It depends. If comics made a bit more sense based on time periods this could impress unsuspecting readers I guess

Eh, most of the comics predates the birth of the universe, I dunno what you want to do with that :P

bump
Some December comics that are good:
December 30th, 2016 (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2016-12-30): I'd like to imagine he's talking to a pet rock he got for Christmas.
December 28th, 2016 (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2016-12-28): "How do you feel about making the ultimate contribution to theoretical science? It will be mostly painless."
December 21st, 2016 (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2016-12-21): Suddenly, French! This actually kinda makes sense from what I got in Google Translate, but if an actual French speaker could look at this and say what they think, that would be great.
December 19th, 2016 (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2016-12-19): Right man is savage.
December 15th, 2016 (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2016-12-15): The psychiatrist has left the building.
December 5th, 2016 (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2016-12-05): I'm posting this pretty much just for the beard.
December 4th, 2016 (http://www.mezzacotta.net/archive.php?date=2016-12-04): Rule 34? (DJ?)
