Title: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Duke "Tape" Eiyeron on January 19, 2015, 05:46:20 PM
I specially like the UI changes Gogle did. the swooshiness, the fluidity and the little details makes Material Design a more than better UI for Android than ever.

Exactly, yet it is especialy this feature many people don't like it :/

Yeah, it really feels smooth. I'm wondering what approach Samsung will take because their colors are much more vibrant. The dialer and messaging apps need face lifts so maybe they'll address that when they upgrade. The only thing that I don't like about l is that the dialer feels under saturated, does anyone else feel the same way?

Post by: Duke "Tape" Eiyeron on January 19, 2015, 06:01:15 PM
No, it's because their phones are over satured. You can achieve the same results with rooting your phones to have display settings.

I'm confused, I think that Android l (5) dialer is under saturated. Is that what you were addressing?

I don't think samsung will have the same minimalistic design, since they have their own UI.
Although Apple's design is also quite minimalistic, and with Android vanilla AND Apple
being this style, Samsung might also go this way. Also Eiyeron maybe you should remove
the (splitted from... part from the title, since it's quite messy :P

Post by: Duke "Tape" Eiyeron on January 19, 2015, 06:17:02 PM
(Yay thanks)

Yeah, Samsung does have their own (heavy and quite strange on the font choice) UI, Touch Wiz IIRC. I saw some lollipop+touchwiz themes there : http://www.knowyourmobile.com/mobile-phones/android-50-lollipop/22883/samsung-android-lollipop-update-bring-touchwiz-themes
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion (splitted from What's your computer specs? (+what electronics do
Post by: CKH4 on January 19, 2015, 06:18:09 PM
Lol, good job splitting.
Samsung's stuff is really vibrant but I was more talking about the notification panel because stock Android 5 has a dark subdued notification panel.
Edit. Themes would be great on touchwiz because some of their stuff is ugly.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Snektron on January 19, 2015, 06:25:18 PM
Hmm, from the link it indeed looks like Samsung is still going for the more
vibrant looks, but it still looks nice. Although i have never (and still don't) liked
Samsung's notification panel.

I agree that carbon looks good although in the early development stage I'd say it's nothing to wipe a phone about. Maybe it'll get to be as good as cyanogen.

Yeah, this project seems to have a neat future, it's a very good idea to do this kind of modular phone.

Regarding Android 5, I didn't install it yet because I heard it had many problems, such as reboot loop when charging if the language is set to French Canadian and in some cases much higher battery usage. So I decided to wait a bit until that stuff is fixed.

By the way, shouldn't those two topics be located in the general hardware and modding section?
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion

I wasn't sure if it being off topic overrides the hardware thingy so I went on the safe side of off topic.

It's been updated twice already. My dad used it for a while on his nexus 5 and didn't have a problem.

I've personally been running cm12 for a while (self builds with some mods in the kernel and board configuration files) and it runs great. Extremely stable and they add features steadily. The kind that should be in stock android imo. It stays simple but allows more customization abilities and it makes the ui overall much more usable. Pretty much why cm is my goto ROM since android 4.3 (after I stopped using paranoid android 3.x which had performance issues).

Aah ok, I wasn't sure because my phone stopped notifying me that updates were available.

That reminds me, since most phones use ARM, I wonder if they could run a TI-Nspire or HP Prime OS?
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Snektron on January 20, 2015, 02:07:46 PM
Or on a RPI? Although ist probably another ARM version :(
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Duke "Tape" Eiyeron on January 20, 2015, 02:14:41 PM
IIRC The RPI has a Arm v6, it shouldnt be too hard to put an Android on it. Beware of the low RAM though
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Snektron on January 20, 2015, 02:43:45 PM
QuoteDevice implementations MUST have at least 340MB of memory available to the kernel and userspace.
And this is Android 4.4 which requires ARMv7

QuoteDevice implementations MUST have at least 92MB of memory available to the kernel
and userspace.
Android 2.1 can run on ARMv6 and can probably run on RPI.
In fact:

That would be interesting, I'd definitely load an SD card with it if it were. The only issue I see is the lack of drivers to control it.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: aetios on January 21, 2015, 01:38:10 PM
I still run Android 2.3.3 [Gingerbread] :P I didn't like touchwiz at all, so I installed GoLauncher pretty quickly. I think I've been using my phone with a Go interface (golaunch, golocker, toucher pro) for like 2 years now. Sadly recently GoLocker has been glitchy with my phone in that it causes my text input fields to block out so I can't type which is pretty annoying, and it also randomly locks my phone while I'm using it, so I disabled screen lock altogether :P

I like Nova launcher, it's fast, pretty smooth and looks however you want it. I think that some of the L style features look better than the actual thing.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: novenary on January 21, 2015, 02:12:20 PM
Hmmm, doesn't nova launcher require android 4.x ? Iirc it's based on the 4.0 launcher. I myself use the stock cyanogenmod 12 launcher which  is great. I've been using nova launcher since android 4.2 but then I switched recently.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: CKH4 on January 21, 2015, 02:29:12 PM
I use it because stock touchwiz is pretty evil. You might be right, I haven't tested it on anything before 4.0.3.

Also, I've never used anything older than 4.2 cause the n4 is my first phone ever. :P

I wasn't that lucky, I only had the tetris and pacman demos. Nokia was a bit before me, although just a few years ago I had to ask to borrow someone's phone and it was an old Nokia (just the number pad and a small screen). I was thoroughly amazed because the oldest phone I had seen was a flip phone. It was pretty cool.

Aren't they still making new flip phones nowadays? Also my first ever phone was a Samsung i5510 and it was slow as hell (although touchscreen was much better than my iPod Touch 4), but it did the job while it lasted. Now it's used only as alarm clock.

Indeed. BttF series is by far one of the best movie series out there. Great classics that the current generations should watch even if the 2nd movie's depiction of the future is not even close to accurate :P (which can be understood considering that movie came out in 1989)

Yeah there were also new ones in 5.0.0
in 5.0.2:
- Changes to internal alarms
- Changes in the TRIM process
- Few bug fixes.
I don't know about 5.0.1, but i believe some memory leaks were fixed
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 08, 2015, 06:53:16 PM
I know 5.0.1 fixed the bug causing the phone to go into a reboot loop when charging, which only happened if the French Canadian language was set. It also suppisedly fixes battery draining issues, but some people reported that it actually makes them worse.

Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion

I'm waiting for CM12, I like Cyanogen a lot since I had to switch to (it's the original ROM for One Plus One) and I feel Vanilla is too plain and does't have enough customisation/tweaks to fully enjoy the experience. Right now I forgot my charger away from home and being not able to charge its battery, I downcloked the phone to max 6000Mhz + regular battery economy things and I have now the idle autonomy of a classic Nokia (-1% battery during the whole night, neeeeat).
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Snektron on February 09, 2015, 08:11:40 AM
I already have CM12 and i love it. CM is one of the best ROM's hands down, if not the best.
But it's actually quite suprising how big the One S community is on forums like XDA. You'd
expect such an old model to be long gone. No one has an One X anymore.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Duke "Tape" Eiyeron on February 09, 2015, 08:15:33 AM
But they have a certain curious diplomacy. They almost killed the OPO CM support because tensions created by OP as they released their phones in a country they signed to not ship with CM built-in.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Snektron on February 09, 2015, 08:18:55 AM
I like how they are independent and Google tried to buy them. Luckily they didn't
get bought though, else the whole point of CM would be gone and surely would have
lost most of their users.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 09, 2015, 11:25:57 PM
Yeah true. After all, people are switching to CM for a reason. There is something missing in Android that makes people use hacks, alternate OSes or other things to enhance their experience.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Snektron on February 10, 2015, 06:43:37 AM
Well for most people the reason is most brands put gigabytes of bloatware (unwanted apps) on their phones. I believe the Galaxy s5 has like 6gb.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: CKH4 on February 10, 2015, 12:21:33 PM
6 on the note 3 aswell (including the os). I think that companies shouldn't be allowed to blockuuninstallation of apps that wouldn't brick the phone (like everything except for the system processes and the settings app).
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion

I really dislike CyanogenMod for their diplomacy. I really hate them for it. But their ROMs are truly great.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Yuki on February 10, 2015, 01:15:57 PM
Well yeah, usually the big companies and providers put a ton of bloatware you cannot remove because they're installed in /system and they're taking quite a lot of space. Rooting lets you remove them.

Actually, system and user apps are installed in two different partitions, one being read-only, so not only you'd want to remove bloatware, but also converting some of your apps as system apps. But the problem, some apps really dislike being a system app, so they'll just crash. Android's system/user app system is kind of weird.
Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Vijfhoek on February 10, 2015, 02:01:18 PM
iOS has a similar system, where system applications are in the read-only /Applications and user apps somewhere else I can't remember.

Title: Re: Smartphone technical discussion
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 11, 2015, 05:22:58 PM
Yeah I hate bloatware. On my Samsung i5510 I think aside from the OS, 90% of the remaining space was used by bloatware. I could only install 1 app besides Facebook and I had to uninstall updates for all the preinstalled stuff in order to free up space.

Samsung is crap. I bought myself a Motorola Moto G2 for my TwoStep App development.

Well Android is great, but I think Java is not a good choice for a whole operating system (except Linux kernel and dalvik-vm).
It's slow and inefficent.
But iOS Objective C is even worse. Its fast, but hard to program (I like C, C# VB.NET and PHP best; I can live with java).

I'm afraid, that we won't be able to write to SD-Cards anymore starting with 4.4.4 but I'm surprised, that SD card writing still works on 4.4.4 on my Motorola.

Just some random things that I have in mind about smartphones.

Google is actually developing a Java to native compiler. It's called Android Runtume (ART for short).
My Android 5 device has it by default (Maybe 4.4.4 too, if you have it it's in developer options somewhere), but not activated. I tried it out one time, but as of right now it's slower
than dalvik, but it has some potential.

Wait... Android is written in Java?? O.O

As for Samsung one issue I got is that their higher end phones, such as the Galaxy Note series, are too large to fit in a pocket. I don't want to have to carry an extra storage thing with my hands or shoulders when I go somewhere.

Maybe one day the NSA will launch a worldwide 3G network for which support is built-in in every computer (inside a component that cannot be dismantled without being permanently damaged) manufactured in the world and everyone will be subscribed by default and for free to that big network, so even if you don't have Internet, you will still be spied on. :P

I tend to not care much though because they can't really arrest 3 billions of people downloading stuff from pirate sites. It's more about risks of a dishonest employees working for the NSA that I'm worried about, since we had those at the government before. I would rather not see my bank account number fall under the wrong hands.

So Samsung now has their proprietary version of Android? Does it offer every feature that the official Android offers or did they lock stuff down?

They have their own stuff but most of it is hardware related. They make it much more difficult to root though.

Ah OK. I tend to not like proprietary versions of such OSes for those reasons personally. I prefer having full freedom with my device if I decide to. I wonder if that could be why so many people have been ranting at Samsung devices in the last two weeks or so?

Probably the update and the S6 looks similar to the iPhone 6. Anyway I don't think I'll be getting a Samsung again.

Looks quite slick actually! Now if its a bit faster than the 4.x version that would be nice too :P

Touchwiz is only the GUI, but they have to make their own rom to support their hardware :) Also to have Touchwiz pre-installed and some more
bloatware (*cough 6Gb cough*)

Samsung is always crossing Apple, and vice versa. Though Apple doesn't seem to mind when other manufacturers do the same thing.
(For instance, a while ago Apple sued Samsung for Android features. They can't sue google i heard because Android is non-profit, but they don't
sue HTC or other manufacturers too.)

I checked when I reset my phone a while back and the 6gb includes the os but still the os is only like 2gb without bloat. Also Android L seems slightly faster with the non Samsung stuff.

In theory, its faster because two big factors : optimization and ART. After all, they have to keep the optimization in place to avoid dropping support to already active phones and to allow constructors to add their bloated craplayer or crapapps without too much problems

ART is still in developement. It is available on Android 5 but still heavily experimental and it is recommended you keep using Dalvik.
I tried it once and my phone got incredibly slow, i even had trouble setting it back to Dalvik  :-\

I promise I will never buy me one again too.
Samsungs lo-quality stuff just SUCKS.
Their crappy LCD panels fail directly after warranty, the touch digitizer fails too, our TV (from Samsung) doesn't turn on at times.
NEVER will I buy any device from them again!

My sister bought a Huaweii Ascend P6. After a year it just fell apart. The LCD won't recognize touches and has some weird colorings, the backplate just falls off.
Then again my sister is not very cautious with electronics, unlike me >.<

I have a unbranded Android 5.0.2 (from Motorola) and it is quite nice! Apparently there's no Dalvik or ART anymore, as the menu to select it, disappeared after the update from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2. So one of them is now established as the new standard. I guess its ART.

I am extremely careful with all my devices too. I pack them in silicon cases, put display protection foil on them, have them always in my front pocket without any keys or coins in it. And it works for most of the time. But not even that was enough to protect that dumb Samsung S3 Mini. I like the way bigger, cheaper, higher quality Motorola Moto G2 way more and I am totally happy with it.

i don't even have a case for my HTC one S, i like them "naked" :P. So far i only have a few dents form the first week that i had it, when i dropped accidently it when i was biking to school.

Google also made internal changes to the platform, with the Android Runtime (ART) officially replacing Dalvik for improved application performance, and with changes intended to improve and optimize battery usage, known internally as Project Volta.

Guess you're right, and now you say it, it looks like my (self made) wallpaper runs way smoother

I'M pretty fine with my Nexus 5 right now. Sure, it has some minor quirks, but for now it does the job well overall. I'm hoping that it will still do so in 2 years, but again phone carriers here always have crazy offers every now and then.

Yeah i like to keep phones for a while too, i've got my HTC one S for almost 2 years now, and im still happy with it. Though i am waiting for Ara to get released ;D

Yeah, Ara is a promising, yet flawed, project. I hope to see progress in this curious thing.

When you have more news on external sites than your homesite, I wonder if they have really progress on it. I'm not watch them down, I'm just curious about their PA organization.

That is a little suspicious too sometimes when a company publishes no news and updates for a long while. If it has been half a year then it could mean that the company went under.

Or just dropped the support for the phone, this could work too. Usually, after one year without updates you could start wondering about your phone's future and start watching XDA devs and their ROM builds.

Yeah, in theory it's stock Android but it should have some tweaks, like drivers or GApps.

Thats what i like about the HTC One S. Even though the model is like 3.5 years old now, it still gets a CM update very quicky (thx random xda devs)

Yeah, if your phone is old enough, no one want to support it anymore aside from some random devs on XDA, and even then...

That's just Qualcomm's naming scheme, they don't necessarily share anything. Qualcomm is the biggest ARM SoC vendor on the market.

Yes I know. But its still cool that they are quite similar (ARM and Adrena GPU).

I plan to do quite a bit of Windows Mobile development in the next time. Maybe I can come up with some useful apps for interfacing with the Arduino and other microcontrollers.

Well look at it this way : Nvidia still calls their GPUs GeForce, AMD still calls them Radeon, and desktop CPUs are still x86 after decades. :)

Yes I am totally aware of this. I was just referring to the name as I never expected a Qualcomm chipset inside of this phone. Initially the chipset I was expecting it to have was some XScale one.

Ah I see. ARM11 (a core implementing the ARMv6 ISA) dates back from around that time though. I believe that's  what the iPhone used back then.
