UPDATE: Following was an April Fools joke. We are remaining an English website, so don't worry, you won't need to learn French. Fun fact, though: April fools day in French is "Poisson d'Avril" (April Fish), and walruses love fishes and seafood. :walrii:

As you might have noticed, our website logo has changed, now reading "Le Morse de la Prog" instead of "CodeWalrus". Although CodeWalrus is an English-speaking website, the entire staff team speaks French as its native language. Even our Elite Coders, with the exception of Keoni29, speak French as their mother tongue. As this often proved problematic with interactions between members and staff, we had to take a rash decision.

Starting next month, CodeWalrus will become a French-only discussion forum. While old posts will remain in English, new ones will have to go in the off-topic section, prefixed with [EN] tags. During this one month transition, you will still be allowed to use English anywhere on the board while you learn French, and afterward, the use of Google Translate will be tolerated. The website URL will remain intact, although we are not ruling out the possibility of purchasing lemorsedela.prog if .prog domain names ever become a thing.

We are sorry for the inconvenience this might cause. Hopefully this should prove to be an interesting learning experience for our members, though, and eventually improve relationships between our staff and regulars.

Due to lack of users and the fact that almost everybody who use #CodeWalrus IRC channel are already on EFnet,  Omninet or using one of the two forum shoutboxes, we have come to the decision to discontinue Freenode support and linking for #CodeWalrus. From now on, in order to use the #CodeWalrus IRC channel, you will have to use one of the following method:

-Connect to EFnet then join #CodeWalrus
-Connect to Omninet then join #CodeWalrus
-WalrusIRC (main website IRC shoutbox)
-OmnomIRC (alternate one available via your profile group membership settings)

The IRC relay bot that links all the four above will also be renamed to something shorter to improve readability of IRC conversations when chatting from an IRC client. But it will no longer connect to the Freenode network, so anybody who joins #CodeWalrus from Freenode from now on will not be able to chat with us anymore.

We invite everyone who idles in the Freenode #CodeWalrus channel to switch over to one of the EFnet or Omninet servers (although this should not be a serious issue since almost all of you already use other IRC channels on those networks or are using WalrusIRC).

The CodeWalrus Programming Newsletter - Winter 2015 Edition

Announcement
Hello and welcome to the CWPN, the first edition of the CodeWalrus Programming Newsletter! CodeWalrus forums have opened to the great public on January 1st 2015 and there have been quite a lot of activity ever since. At the end of every season (in this case, Winter), a newsletter will be sent, summarizing events about what happened on the forums during the past season, such as program releases, notable projects and some big calculator community milestones. This edition covers January, February and March. Hopefully if you haven't visited the website or forums in a while (or were not aware that it was already open), this newsletter should help you catch up easier!

TI-83 Premium CE and TI-84 Plus CE released
In March 2015, the successor to the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition was released: the TI-84 Plus CE, and its French incarnation, the TI-83 Premium CE, is coming soon as well: http://codewalr.us/181 . Both models are compatible and they feature an eZ80 processor, considerably faster speed (especially the memory-mapped screen), much more RAM and are lighter. Although there are some hardware lock-downs by Texas Instruments, ASM is still perfectly possible and the more experienced TI community members are slowly discovering its way around those limitations, without necessarily using exploits. The main CodeWalrus discussion thread is located at http://codewalr.us/346 and there is also a Cemetech one at http://www.cemete.ch/t11405

First big CW program release imminent?
First Fantasy: Mana Force is a DCSE-enhanced BASIC remake of DJ Omnimaga's Mana Force RPG classic, allowing you to experience one of DJ Omnimaga's first TI-83 Plus RPG into full TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition color. While trying to remain true to the original in terms of ASCII art, it now features full color, new magic animations, new menus, various new additions and new spells! What's left to be done is balancing and adding more features to the game. It might not be as complex as The Reign of Legends series nor Illusiat 13, but with the new additions and small amount of sub-programs, this game should cater to a larger JRPG audience. This is also the first 84+CSE RPG that might get released and one of the rare hybrid BASIC games for that model to use the full 320x240 resolution mode. The official sub-forum for this project can be found at http://codewalr.us/index.php?board=25.0 and you can watch a video trailer at https://youtube.com/watch?v=-OtQg7tCpXk

Hexagon for monochrome calculators!
Among the smaller or newer projects, Eiyeron and Matrefeytontias have been working on their respective clones of Hexagon, a popular phone game. Eiyeron's version is for the Casio FX-9860G series, while Matref version is for the TI-83 Plus series. They are not finished but from the last demos, the games look very promising! Head over to their respective sub-forums to check them out: http://codewalr.us/index.php?board=26.0 http://codewalr.us/index.php?board=27.0

Other projects being worked on
Don't forget to check out http://codewalr.us/index.php?action=forum to find more projects in the works. Besides the featured ones, we got one sub-forum for calculator project showcase and one for non-calculator material.

Staff changes and site updates
In ensure that maintaining CodeWalrus is feasible in long terms with small amounts of full-time staff, we have decided to open a new staff group called Part-time staff, where people with limited free time can still help if they wish when they can. Some other changes and additions occurred since the site open on New Year as well. http://codewalr.us/index.php?topic=317.0 In addition to that, in order to give people more chances to get recognized in the TI community, we also opened a new member group called Elite Coders, which gives certain notable programmers a special badge and extra project sub-forum privileges (although it's still possible to have such sub-forum even outside the group if you have a notable project in the works and are willing to post updates in your topic. There will most likely still be more additions to the website in the near future.

CodeWalrus contest
There is a mini-programming contest coming soon on CodeWalrus. What we will be looking at the most is how creative you can get and while our theme might seem impossible, there are in fact many possibilities. Make sure to check the website front page regularly for updates!

Stay in touch!
If you have any submission ideas for next newsletters, feel free to PM a CodeWalrus staff or e-mail us at a d m i n @ c o d e w a l r . u s. They will be forwarded to the whole team in our staff sub-forum. Also, besides the forums, we got an IRC channel called #CodeWalrus , which is reachable from EFnet (where other big TI calculator channels are located) and Omninet (Omnimaga IRC network). You can also use the IRC chatroom directly from the WalrusIRC or OmnomIRC shoutboxes on the website, depending of your account settings (you need 5 posts to do so).

-Special thanks to people who have contributed to CodeWalrus, projects and news, and of course, the staff.

You can view a forum version of this newsletter as well as past ones at the following URL: http://codewalr.us/index.php?board=32.0 or http://codewalr.us/index.php?board=32.0;wap

If you would like to subscribe or unsubscribe to the site newsletter and e-mail annoucements, go to the forums, click Profile, then head to the Notifications section and the option to check or uncheck is "Receive forum newsletters, announcements and important notifications by email.". If you do not have a forum account, you can now setup that option while registering. Don't hesitate to sign up and say hi or showcase your projects. We hope that you feel at home if you do!

Gaming / Mario 64 HD demo
March 27, 2015, 11:06:18 PM
http://mario64-erik.u85.net/Web.html

I know this will most likely not get finished due to possible C&D from Nintendo if they notice, but this makes me think it would be awesome if Nintendo decided to do an HD remake of Super Mario 64 for the Wii U. :)

The TI-84 Plus CE, which replaces the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, has been released and various TI community members such as tr1p1ea, author of xLIBC, have finally gotten their calculator in the mail!

http://www.underwooddistributing.com/shop?page=shop.browse&category_id=66

This means that other stores will most likely have it in stock soon and eventually the new school device will make its way to brick and mortar stores. The MSRP is $129.99 and the calculator features the following:

-eZ80 processor
-150 KB of RAM (huge improvement over previous TI-84 Plus series calculators)
-3 MB of Flash
-320x240 color LCD that supports 16bpp, 8bpp and more
-OS with more features
-Considerably faster screen refreshing (especially in menus and the program editor)
-BASIC, C and ASM support (a third-party language called ICE is also available and is similar to Axe on monochrome models)

However, no SDK yet and some ASM functionalities are rumored to not be available. The biggest advantage of this new calculator model will lie in the much faster screen and larger user RAM, so pure TI-BASIC and pure ASM programmers will benefit the most. UPDATE (November 11th 2016): The calculator supports BASIC, ASM, C and a third-party language called ICE, all in 8xp program format. Flash APPs are not available, as TI has decided to not release the 2048 bits RSA key and current technology makes it impossible to factor a key this large. But this should not be a problem, as people managed to find workarounds, such as for parser hooks.

-TI-BASIC: TI-83/84+/CE Basic documentation
-Hybrid TI-BASIC: Sprites v3.3 | CE Textlib
-ASM: eZ80 assembly documentation for the CE
-C: C Programming Toolchain, libraries and resources for the TI-84 Plus CE
-ICE: ICE Compiler and its documentation

-Sprite graphics converters: ConvPNG (for use in ASM/C/ICE) | Sprite Ripper (for use in TI-BASIC with Sprites v3.3)
-Emulation: CEmu emulator (requires a ROM dump from a real calculator)

I invite owners of the TI-84 Plus CE (as well as owners of the TI-83 Premium CE when it comes out) to share their discoveries about this new calculator series in this topic or on the forums, be it ASM tricks, bugs or other useful information.

Well... it seems that the new French exam restrictions coming in place in 2018 have led to LibreCalc demise D:

http://www.librecalc.com/

It was meant to be an open-source calculator dedicated to rival TI, Casio and HP, but they say that the new exam restrictions goes against their wishes of having an open calc, so they have stopped. The lack of interest from teachers was also a factor. I kinda wish that they had continued for at least US and other markets, but I guess in the case of USA since many schools force people to ditch their TI-84+ for a Nspire that would have been hard.

So yet another open source calc project bites the dust...

Other / Pi day!
March 14, 2015, 04:39:39 PM
Happy pi day everyone! Unfortunately I missed a very unique and special time this year in particular, because of 2015. March 14th '15 9:26:53 AM is what I mean. Funnily I didn't really realize this until now, but then I saw that the year was in the pi digits. :P

Who here woke up for pi second (or even 1/100 of pi second)?

With just three staff members left and fear that I would have been forced to take a hiatus in a few months, the only way to continue keeping the website alive was to process into a restructure of our staff system. When I ran Omnimaga (which I founded in 2001), the main staff had some activity requirements to meet in order to ensure that we can maintain the website adequatly and keep its activity steady. That idea was transplanted into CodeWalrus when I co-founded it in October 2014. However, the TI community has mutated over the years, with changes in people's habits and priorities, reducing the amount of people who could contribute full time. In addition to that, some people might not necessarily feel comfortable with too many staff privileges. But then, what if those people still wanted to give us an hand?

This is why we are pleased to announce the introduction of a new staff group called Part-time maintenance and a position called Topic management! With the addition of the Part-time maintenance group, Streetwalrus is now able to stay in the team, at the server maintenance position! Besides those changes, Juju is now in charge of site funding. I am also now part of the Topic management group, although all its permissions are already available in the Forum maintenance group by default.

Now for the site itself, there have been quite a lot of updates since last week's events:
Quote-There is now a forum navigation on the site front page portal, so you can access your favorite sub-forums faster! Thanks to SiNaN from SimplePortal website, this navigation is dynamic, so it will update itself automatically!
-When you register a new account, you can now directly choose to subscribe or unsubscribe from e-mail announcements and updates.
-It is now possible to switch between WIRC and OmnomIRC at will via your profile. Just join or leave the new group called "OmnomIRC mode" via the Group Memberships option and you're set. As always, you can also turn both off entirely by joining the "Disabled shoutbox mode" usergroup. #CodeWalrus is also reachable via EFnet, Omninet or Freenode as always.
-It is now possible to view all attachments of a topic in one page, via a topic list link or a topic view link at the bottom of the discussion.
-The forum rules now includes "disruptive behavior" as punishable offense, under rule #6
-The CodeWalrus store has been discontinued, as I am now out of the music business. The music link is now available as a new Downloads sub-menu in the top navigation bar and my entire discography will be available for free (without the bonus tracks) starting March 15th. This also ends the "My Little Activity: Posting is Music" promotion, which lasted for 2 years.
-The thrash bin sub-forum (where deleted posts land by default) is now visible to all members that have at least 1 post.
-You can now add your calculator collection above your signature (it doesn't take much space, especially now that CSS has been edited to shrink down signature size). Go to your profile to edit it.

And finally, we are working on our first newsletter, which will be sent via e-mail soon for those who have them enabled. The CodeWalrus newsletter will have an edition at the end of Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall and summarize major site events, updates and member projects and releases. Another surprise is coming soon as well.

Happy codewalrifying and thanks for the support! :walrii:

People on Cemetech have analyzed TI-84 Plus CE Flash applications that Texas Instruments released a few days before. It appears that they contains a 2048-bits signature. The signature key is required to sign APPs and make them valid for use on the new ez80 calculator, and there is no sign that Texas Instruments have any plans to release a SDK to develop such software.

Since factoring an key this large is impossible with today's technology, could this mean that the TI-83 Premium CE and TI-84 Plus CE will be locked down against third-party Flash APPs and be restricted to only a few developers such as TI themselves? ASM programs are possible to write no matter the outcome of this, so 3rd-party ASM development on those new calculators is perfectly safe, but in some cases, choosing a 8xp ASM file over a Flash  APP is not the ideal situation, especially if TI decides also to add an executable code limit to that new calculator line, like the 8 KB limit on the TI-83+. Or could TI be planning a paid SDK? After all, back in the early 2000's, Flash APP development costed money before TI finally decided to make the SDK free of charge.

In conclusions, there is a possibility that for the TI-83 Premium CE and TI-84 Plus CE, we might be limited to the Asm() command to launch native language softwares.

This is more meant as a joke topic, but since on the Internet many people use Google translate due to being unable to read English, this is why it is best to do an effort to spell properly and if possible, use good grammar or try to avoid omitting words. It doesn't have to be perfect, and we all know the mistakes that Google Translate itself can do, but here are some examples of what poor spelling can lead to: :P

QuoteGood English spelling: Anybody who use good grammar gets higher respect from everybody and nobody will look upon somebody for this.
French Google translate: Quiconque utilise une bonne grammaire devient plus grand respect de tout le monde et personne ne va regarder quelqu'un pour cela.

Wrong English spelling: Anypony who use good grammar gets higher respect from everypony and nopony will look upon somepony for this.
French Google translate: Anypony qui utilisent la grammaire devient plus grand respect de everypony et nopony se penchera sur somepony pour cela.
Almost sounds like adult MLP fanfic material :P

QuoteGood English spelling:The quick brown lion jumps over the lazy dog
French Google translate: Le lion brun rapide saute sur le chien paresseux.

Wrong English spelling: The qwick brown lion jumps ovah the lazy dog
French Google translate: Le lion brun Qwick saute OVAH le chien paresseux
For strange reasons, Google Translate doesn't want to translate The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog, which is why I replaced fox with lion. But yes, don't wonder why I labeled this topic as NSFW :P . If manually translated back to English, this implies that the lion did... ahem... special things with the dog.

QuoteGood English spelling: I have spent three hours over the Pacific.
French Google translate: Je ai passé trois heures sur le Pacifique.

Wrong English spelling: I have spent three hours over the pacifier
French Google translate: Je ai passé trois heures sur la sucette
In this case, sucette can either be interpreted as lollipop, pacifier or (more likely) blow job.

QuoteGood English spelling: Look at my broken clock. It spins like mad.
French Google translate: Regardez mon horloge brisée. Il tourne comme un fou.

Wrong English spelling: Look my broken c. Spin like made man.
French Google translate: Regardez ma bite cassé. Spin comme l'homme fait.
Manually translates back to something bordering on material from that one shock site that shall not be named.

The topic on Planète-Casio about the new exam restrictions coming to France in 2018 and the discussion about the declining popularity of calculator gaming that ensued kinda made me realize that there are some oddities in the calculator community, when it comes to popularity of calculator games.

If you take the French community, you will notice that on Casio websites, discussion will be mostly centered around calculator game development. On TI websites, on the other hand, almost only educational discussion will prevail.

But then, if you look at the English community, it's the complete opposite, with Casio gaming discussion being virtually non-existent and most TI discussion being centered around game development.

What isn't odd is that nowadays on ticalc.org, the only games that attract significant attention are color versions of Flappy Bird, 2048, Snake, Tunnel, Mario, Pac-Man, Zelda, Final Fantasy and Pokémon clones. Something inevitable with color models replacing monochrome ones, but also it seems that the people that still plays calculator games will only do so at school and will almost only seek for big franchise names. A decade ago, any monochrome game that made ticalc.org front page could reach at least 500 downloads in a week or higher for a month, no matter the genre. Also, we all know that visitors usually don't bother checking the description and screenshots of file pages, so the crappiest possible Pokémon or Zelda game will usually get more downloads than Steins;Gate 8-bits or TI-Boy CSE.

However, I noticed something strange in my current ticalc profile (which started in April 2013): If you pay attention to my download stats, you will notice that my most downloaded JRPG is Mystique: La Larme du Dragon. Even the Illusiat collection and Reuben BASIC series have fewer downloads. I thought this was strange considering Mystique is my least known release and is an unilingual french game located on a virtually unilingual anglophone website. O.O

Anybody noticed some odd trends in recent years?

Normally, as soon as a new version of Ndless comes out, a new TI-Nspire OS is announced shortly afterward. This is the case again after Ndless 3.9 release :P

http://www.t3europe.eu/resources/product-information/ns-40/

It apparently comes out on March 26th 2015. Note that this OS drops compatibility with the grayscale TI-Nspire handhelds. However, the writing was on the wall for many years, as newer OSes kept growing in size, to the point where those using OS 3.9.1 would only have about 2 or 3 MB of free memory available for their programs once Ndless was installed. This means, on the other hand, that Nspire Clickpad/Touchpad users will be able to stick to an Ndlessable OS as long as their school allows grayscale TI-Nspire models!

The OS 4.0 announcement page advertises the usual anti-downgrade protection, although it also comes with many new features. Ideally, you should wait before upgrading until a new tool such as DowngradeFix is released, in case you want to downgrade back to OS 3.9.1.

WARNING: Do not set your Java programs minimum version above 7u65! The reason for this is that after this, Oracle decided to add new security features that will block many third-party Java applications in your browser, but there will be no way to ignore the warning.  In addition to that, Java 8 removes the Medium security settings. Java will simply force the setting upon you and then this is what will happen:

And here is the problem that arises next: The Ignore option will not work. Reload will reload the page but it will not fix the problem either. And what's worse is in your Java security settings, even if you add the website or URL to your exceptions list, Java will still block them anyway. In other words, the Exceptions list does nothing at all, no matter if you follow the instructions properly at http://java.com/en/download/help/jcp_security.xml ! Switching to a different browser won't solve the problem either, same for restarting.

So yeah, as a result, some people will be forced to downgrade back to a version of Java that didn't implement those ridiculous security measures. So please, developers, be kind to the people affected by this and make sure that your java games and softwares can run in older versions.

According to a post on the HP Prime blog, it appears that this is the end of the line for the HP 50g calculator. Should the post reveal to be true, then HP will cease production of the HP 50g this year, to focus on the HP Prime. So after 15 years, the reign of the HP 49/50g series seems to be over.

This could probably have explained why there have been quite a few hot deals on the HP 50g lately, sometimes being offered for as low as $50. In any case, there will most likely be much more. It's a shame that the calculator has not taken off more than it did among developers, though, although it was very popular among engineers. Hopefully HP adds more engineering tool to the HP Prime firmware in the near future as a compromise to this loss.

17 years after Texas Instruments released it, the TI-89 finally got a fully complete Zelda clone, playable from the beginning to the end!  :w00t:

You can download it here: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/463/46319.html

Only two finished Zelda games exist for the TI-83 Plus series, which are Zelda: The Hero of Hyrule and Dark Link Quest, and they came out in 2004, after many people failed to complete a Zelda project for the TI-83 Plus series. The former uses the ARPGCS engine, is written in French and lacks many elements from Zelda (such as hearts, items, etc), but has very great graphics, Ys-like gameplay and fast speed. The latter was written by me and uses hybrid BASIC language with very old ASM libraries resulting in slowdowns and lower quality graphics, but has most features from older games. This new TI-89 Zelda game is also one of very few 68K game to get released in many years.

Gaming / Share your Super Mario Maker level codes!
March 02, 2015, 12:21:39 PM
Have you seen this? :O http://e3.nintendo.com/games/wiiu/mario-maker/

Looks like Nintendo decided to start making their own level editing things and it's called Mario Maker. Basically it lets you make your own Mario levels. It has been possible since ages via ROM hacking and homebrew software but now Nintendo will have their own thing. I wonder if it will come out outside Japan, unlike F-Zero Climax and F-Zero X Expansion Kit?

EDIT: I should add levels CW users made to the first post. Here are mine:

We were supposed to announce this last week, but the TI-Connect and Ndless news delayed it, but we are pleased to introduce a new forum feature: Topic tags!

Basically, in your topic title, if you put some text inside brackets ([TI-BASIC], for example), it will now be converted into a color tag that can be clicked. Clicking the tag will allow you to quickly search the forums for similar topics! It also draws attention more so if, for example, your project is for the TI-84 Plus, then putting [TI-84 Plus] in the topic title will attract people seeking for TI-84 Plus projects.

It has some limitations, however: Currently this feature doesn't work in the Recent Posts page and blocks since the mod doesn't take SimplePortal into account. Hopefully one of our tech-savy staff member can help modifying the Recent Post blocks to fix that. It is also currently impossible to sort topics by tag, which is something we would like to implement in the future. But it should make it easier to find certain topics. Thanks to WadaNon for this mod!

In addition to this new feature, the board rules were slightly modified tonight, now including "disruptive behavior" as a disallowed thing in Rule #4. As always, we encourage our users to make CodeWalrus a friendly place to hang out and showcase your creations. :)

Also, the last update is about our staff. Streetwalrus lacks the necessary computer access to fullfill his CodeWalrus duties and to remain active on a regular basis. As a result, his activity will remain sporadic until school vacations.

An extra sub-forum called Safe-haven was also added several days ago, after the off-topic ones. It is restricted to only certain group of users or regular members above a certain post count, though, and is restricted to only certain type of discussions (real-life-related, for example). You can request an invitate by going to Profile->Group Membership then clicking "Request membership" next to the "Safe-haven access" usergroup.

As always, if you have any suggestions, concerns or questions then don't hesitate to post them in the CodeWalrus discussion section! We want to make sure that our members are happy about the website, the team and what we do so let your voice be heard. :)

The other day, Netham45 signed up but his account landed on the spam account page, with a yellow icon because it could not be checked. Also, sometimes, accounts will have a blacklisted IP, but their email won't be. In some cases, the last time a blacklisted IP matched a spam account will date back several months ago, which implies that it is not 100% guaranteed to be a spam IP anymore (especially with rotating IPs).

This is why before deleting accounts you should make sure that it's not a false positive. To check this, click the red icon next to the nickname in the approval page. For example, this account: http://codewalr.us/index.php?action=profile;u=156 http://www.stopforumspam.com/search?q=204.44.92.60 only matches 1 from July 2014. I am thinking that we should approve such accounts anyway in case it was a legit user, and if the user spams, then at least it will just be 1 account spamming rather than losing a potential good user.

Also, if the icon is yellow it means the Spam db was down when the person registered.

Let's make things clear about CodeWalrus site colors. People keep saying it's white and green, when in fact it's dark gray and purple. I took pictures to prove it:

Before anyone jumps to conclusion about the lightning, it doesn't matter, because we all knew that this dress was pink and green anyway.

Gaming / Pier Solar and the Great Architect
February 28, 2015, 04:36:07 PM
I was wondering if anyone got Pier Solar or played it before?

It's a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive RPG that got released in limited quantities in 2010, then reprinted in 2011 and 2015. I have a copy being shipped right now two years after pre-ordering it. They do not produce copies until enough pre-orders are made but since people canceled their pre-orders due to the long wait there will most likely be some extra copies left after they processed all the remaining orders.

The game also works on the Sega CD. You just got to put the CD in the add-on then Pier Solar will automatically behave like a Sega CD game. There is also a Sega Dreamcast version coming out at a later date and digital and HD versions of the game came out for various platforms such as the Wii U and Steam.

Here is the official URL btw:  http://www.magicalgamefactory.com/en/factory/pier-solar_1/

I personally wanted the Sega Genesis version, though, because I thought it was amazing that people still made actual cartridge-based games for that console. They also released a visual novel called Sacred Line for that console: http://www.magicalgamefactory.com/en/ and are working on a SNES and Sega Genesis project (the latter being a beat-em-up).

So from September 9th 2003 to present day, I would have made between 75917 and 76618 posts on calculator forums. I started doing calc stuff on July 4th 2001 and visiting calculator websites in October of that year, but it took me 2 years before I finally participate for real on calculator forums. This total is taking into account the fact that some Omnimaga posts did not count towards total post count, though (such as the randomness/humor/intro sections). I made 63257 on Omni in total, if I count posts from the admin section back when I ran the site and the randomness (thanks Sorunome for the total). 55810 without the randomness/intro posts

What about you?

Since I lack an album artwork for my stalled 32 bit power metal album started months ago, I never posted the two following songs on Bandcamp. I believe I posted the RN links on Omnimaga but I never really did it here.

A few months ago I released the song Destination 1999 A.D, inspired heavily from F-Zero X (N64) music, most notably the Silence track. I had that idea in my head since playing the game but never thought about putting it into an actual song because it would have been too short. However, when I decided to finally do it in 2014, I decided to add some scary intro at the beginning. The song is fairly simple in structure, though, but you can listen to it here:

http://www.reverbnation.com/djomnimaga/song/21494682-destination-1999-ad

The other one is another idea I had in my head for a while, using inspiration from Sonata Arctica (verses and the intro) and some ideas I had in my head for over a decade (the chorus), which finally became a thing. It's called Elemental Cross:

http://www.reverbnation.com/djomnimaga/song/21479998-elemental-cross

Unfortunately, my last three songs, including the song called Unfinished (which is part of the album) were met with mixed reception on Omni back then (mostly structure and questioning the music genre), so I lost interest then switched back to UK hardcore. I have since worked on new stuff, though, so who knows, maybe this album will see the light of the day at one point? I would really need an album cover, though (I could recycle one from my past albums, though). Also this album will most likely be shorter, like the last two Sabaton albums or the one by Twilight Force.

Among stuff I have been working on in recent months, here are small samples of unfinished songs:

If, for whatever reasons, you are stuck on TI-Nspire OS 3.9.0 or 3.9.1 (such as school forcing you to upgrade or your calculator revision being Hardware S or higher, which didn't work with OSes older than 3.9.1), but still want to use Ndless, then good news: It's out! :D

For those who are unfamiliar with the TI-Nspire, Ndless is a tool that allows the calculator to run C, Python, Javascript and ARM assembly language softwares created by members of the TI community. Normally, the calculator comes built-in with support for both Lua and a limited form of TI-BASIC. ASM and C programs get more control on the calculator, allowing them to run much faster, so you can play games such as DOOM, Quake, Crafti (3D Minecraft clone) and run Nintendo games via various console emulators. In addition to that, you can watch videos and get access to more powerful educational tools such as Khicas and nPDF!

With Texas Instruments devoting between 0.001 and 100% of their profits into locking down their newest TI-Nspire OSes to prevent third-party native programs from running, it usually took over 6 months after a new OS release before new exploits can be both discovered and used to use Ndless on them. Version 3.9 comes out earlier than expected and runs on OS 3.9.0 and 3.9.1. After five years, despite TI's actions, the Ndless team has never gave up, never let anyone down nor deserted us, even if they had every reason possible to do so.

If you still use OS 3.1, then you will have to use Ndless 3.1 instead, though, and OS 3.6 will still require Ndless 3.6.

It is also discouraged to use Ndless 3.9 on TI-Nspire Clickpad models, because they do not have enough RAM to run both OS 3.9 and most Ndless programs simultaneously (only 2-3 MB of RAM left). Also, Ndless 3.9 will not work on Touchpad (grayscale) models.

In addition to that, users of Nspire CX models that have hardware revision J or higher, as well as those who don't use Nlaunchy, should probably stick to Ndless 3.6. Without nLaunchy nor an OS that can run it, Ndless 3.9, which uses the same exploit as DowngradeFix 3.9, requires computer access in order to be re-installed following a calculator crash or reboot. You can still use Ndless 3.9.1 regardless, but under such conditions it won't be ideal.

TI has just released TI-Connect CE 5.0 on their official website. It is a standalone version of TI-Connect that supports the USB version of the TI-83 Plus.Fr, the TI-83 Premium CE and the entire TI-84 Plus family. It sports a brand new interface, which lets you edit calculator program code most notably, and offers considerable improvements on file transfer speed. While it used to take 30 seconds in the original TI-Connect to initiate a transfer at all, everything such as drag-n-dropping a file in a Windows folder is now instant.

Unfortunately, this version of TI-Connect drops support for serial linking and consequently, support for the TI-82, TI-83, TI-83 Plus, the original TI-83 Plus.Fr, the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition, TI-85 and TI-86 was dropped. Also, all 68K models including the TI-89 Titanium are no longer supported. On the other hand, TI-Connect CE acts as a separate entity from TI-Connect 4.0, so installation is done in a separate folder, meaning it will still let you use both.

So I was supposed to work on First Fantasy's code tonight, but I finally ended up working on a Music 2000 (MTV Music Generator) cover of Final Fantasy's intro song on the Playstation emulator.

Nothing special (it's basically the same song with different instruments and 32 bit style instead of 16), but if you like Final Fantasy music you might like it.

We all gotta start somewhere. I don't think we should feel ashamed of our past coding mistakes as a result, providing you don't still do those mistakes. :P Anyway, does anybody here have funny or ridiculous coding mishaps from their past to share?

I start this topic because since I am porting a 2002 game to the CSE I just realized how much of a disaster the code in this game can be. For example, the map engine is about 35% of the entire game size despite being very rudimentary.

Anyway, here I start with something I just found after the title screen, which slipped by when I started remaking the game but went unnoticed until now for odd reasons:

If Z=13:Goto 1

The following is a sign that the game in question is IN DIRE NEED of a map engine rewrite <_<:

I am sure I had even worse stuff before, though. One example I remember is Hinkel from the Omnimaga Pack, which uses Lbl/Gotos to move the snake around. When the game was merged with several other games, this resulted in massive lag when pressing keys (half a second).

I found this through a Cemetech topic by DarkestEx:

http://gamebuino.com/

It's a small handheld game console based on Arduino with specs similar to calcs for people who like old school games and it supports sound. I don't know how much RAM it has, but apparently it supports SD cards.

I wonder if anybody here has one or plan to get one and how good is it?

In a previous announcement, we started doing staff updates and made the new Elite Coder group, designed as a badge for notable programmers that offers some extra forum privileges, an official thing. The announcement stated that the next one would be on February 14th.

Today we are pleased to announce the addition of @Hayleia and @matrefeytontias to the Elite Coder member group! They now have extra privileges regarding what sub-forums they can have in the Featured Projects section, they have access to the Safe-Haven board by default and they are now listed on CodeWalrus front page and About section, along with the staff and the other Elite Coders.

Another member is still pending approval for addition to the Elite Coders group as hasn't replied to his last PM yet to confirm he is still interested. Should he still show interest towards such position (and the site), there might be another Elite Coder addition very soon. In the future, the Elite Coders group will be opened to good programmer who wants to join and is interested in helping CodeWalrus grows, although places might still be limited.

Hayleia is currently working on Super Smash Bros Open, a TI-84 Plus game clone which made the headlines on several big gaming websites, while Matrefeytontias is working on a Super Hexagon clone called Axagon, written in Axe language.

Also, the Featured projects section was finally updated after some delays. Subforums for smaller projects were added for two Elite Coder and a Mana Force CSE sub-forum was added as well.

It is slowly spreading! :3= First in the Super Walrii Land sub-forum, then the Konami code page. Now it has landed in Streetwalrus profile (although it was only a matter of time)!

But since most people on the Internet use IE6, I doubt you will notice anything special. :P

Media Talk / Live action Zelda TV series!
February 06, 2015, 11:42:00 PM
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2015/02/06/report-netflix-developing-live-action-zelda-series

Looks like Netflix is developing a TV series revolving around the universe of the Legend of Zelda. It is supposedly gonna be like (THE) GAME of Thrones, but family-oriented. I wonder how good this could be? Sometimes, live-action doesn't end up well (Dragon Ball Evolution anyone?), but in other cases the end result is not bad or pretty good. I sadly don't have netflix, though. I hope they will consider releasing it on DVD if it is received well and popular among the audience. :)

Games / [HP Prime] HP Prime Tunnel (2013)
February 04, 2015, 11:47:41 PM
This is the official release of my HP Prime port of my HP 39gII Tunnel clone written in BASIC, now adapted for the larger screen and color display. It is probably the first ever game ever made available for download for this calculator model. It isn't meant to show coding skills, especially considering the game was made before my knowledge of the DIMGROB_P and BLIT_P commands (although an intro transition using them was added afterward), but as you'll see on-calc, even if I have to refresh the entire screen content every frame, I still get insane FPS. Because of how incredibly fast this calc is, this is why I manage to get such high framerate even with redrawing the entire screen rectangles and score text every frame. As for the multicolor and 3D-ish text effects, they are possible because the HP Prime lets you use text with no background, so all you have to do is superpose multiple copies of that text, gradually changing its color and position through a FOR loop. This also lets you use bold text. To play, just use the UP and DOWN keys and quit with ON. Here is a Youtube video by Critor of it running on a real calc, but the text color is different and it runs a little slower, since it's an older version:

Games / [TI-84+CSE] HP Prime Tunnel Demake (2013)
February 04, 2015, 09:41:16 PM
This is the xLIBC version of my color Tunnel game, for use with Doors CSE 8.0 on the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition. Originally released for the HP Prime graphing calculator and written in HP PPL language, this 84+CSE demake was adapted to run within the limitations of the lower end 15 MHz platforn, as well as those of TI-BASIC and xLIBC. Requires Doors CSE 8.0. UPDATE: Car is now drawn with a sprite instead of rectangles, now that DCS supports inline sprites, allowing faster speed.

This package includes both a pure TI-84 Plus CE BASIC and a TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition Doors CSE 8.1 version of my old parody of Zero Wing and crappy Atari 2600 games called Legand of Zelda: Sord of Atari (sic). The new version hides the gray status bar except on the CE and is now in one single program. Only the English version was updated. See changelogs included in the zip file for more info.

Original text follows:

QuoteWARNING: Do NOT download this game! It comes directly from hell. With this game you can now experience Zelda like if you were being high, combined with a Zero Wing-quality English translation, while also getting a small idea of how Zelda could have been like if it first came out on the Atari 2600 instead of Nintendo. However, the game has some side effects: In some occasions, you might feel like smashing your brand new color screen machine because of how beeping hard the game is. Game might also cause extreme brain damage and eye cancer. :P UPDATE: Added hard difficulty mode (via Konami code) and French version.

O.O

So yeah, apparently there will be a TI-82 Advanced in France, featuring an exam LED. Probably due to 2018 France regulations? But anyway, if this calc ends up being a TI-84+, then I don't know what to expect anymore about future French TI calculator name.

I think the TI-81 Premium Plus Silver Stats Titanium.Fr is not far ahead now...
