Title: Custom Server
Post by: Jokeriske on April 04, 2016, 07:29:29 PM
Server Build

so, i want to make or build or buy a server but i have no idea which one or which parts i should buy
the main purposes are to host game servers on, like TF2 , battlefield, minecraft, rest house ... etc.
but i have really no clue what it needs.
so, if anyone could help me out that would be so great :)

(I will add my current server's details in a few days.)

I don't know much about this kind of thing, but you are allowed to create/customize servers(and IRC Clients) thru Kiwi IRC's software here: https://kiwiirc.com/

Thanks! The IRC client can come in handy in some time, but i mean fysical servers not a VPS or so

Oh. I did not know that, and neither did I realize this was in the Hardware section. :D

I'm thinking that @Streetwalrus or @Juju might be able to help you there. Juju runs our Minecraft server from his home.

I also set up a Minecraft server to run from my house, it just required simple port forwarding and no-ip for the custom IP. You really need a dedicated computer for it though. Mine is a 4 gb intel core i5, but it was running off a 16 gb flash drive so speed was limited. But I had it running about 10 mods ;)

Servers don't really need a lot of power, I think I posted the specs of my Minecraft server but it's pretty much an old netbook with 1GB RAM and an Intel Atom. So if you have a spare computer or laptop, chances it will do the job. Just install your favourite flavour of Linux (as it's better at running game servers than Windows), plug a network cable in, do the necessary port forwardings on the router and you're good to go.

i forgot to reply sorry about that, i'm thinking about abandoing my plans for a music / fitness room and just build a server room, i had some request to host for people so i might do that just because i like it, as i probably already said im going to study network management so its really good for my future :) , thanks for the advice

You could maybe split the room in half if there aren't too many servers in there? One half could be for computer stuff and the other half could be a downsized fitness room (I doubt you need a lot of fitness equipment anyway, since most people who do just go to the gym). As for music I guess it depends which instrument you are playing (drums can take a lot of space >.<)

its big enough for some server racks but too small for fitness room and server racks, but i dont know if i can use it as a server room because my parents bedroom is the room next to it

Well, you aren't going to need a big room at all for a server unless you want better airflow. So I'm going to be assuming that there will be servers running for each game all at the same time... So you are probably looking for something like a 6 core processor, 16+ GB of RAM depending on how many people would be getting on your servers, and graphics card isn't needed unless the processor you choose does not have integrated graphics. In addition to that, to minimize lag, you'll probably want an SSD but a 7200 RPM hard drive will do fine. Also, make sure you have Ethernet running to it, not wifi.

If you want, give a maximum budget and I will design a server for you...

Also, do you know the amount of players that would be on any of your servers?

thanks for your help! , i'm thinking about €500 - €800 max for now, i know it's not that much but it's something, yeah i have good internet here, i have no idea yet about how many players

Eh, that seems like a good budget, I'll try to design it for ya and tell you about any problems. I'll start with having a max of like 32 players on each server.

Also, what Battlefield game?

EDIT: Wait, apparently you have to be some type of hosting partner with EA to have a battlefield server...
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/czz4t6 (http://pcpartpicker.com/p/czz4t6) is the link to the design and we are looking at about €726... But I can drop that a little bit...

Nice, could you help me design a PC? Mine is getting old and I want a template to work off of ;)

On a side note, I hope you have some plans for ventilation, because a server room will definitively get very hot with no air conditioning.
