Title: The Anagram Times! [news] [politics] [anagrams]
Post by: JWinslow23 on April 26, 2016, 09:56:45 PM
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T4nzLvFtcVQ/Uj_95toVJuI/AAAAAAAB424/P0X_5HTqluI/s1600/The_Anagram_Times.png) (http://www.anagramtimes.com/)

An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase (for example: Astronomers = Moon starers). Generally, these new words and phrases are related to the subject, but in rare cases they can be used to mean the exact opposite (for example: Within earshot = "I won't hear this"). These can even be humorous and outside-the-box (for example: Mother-in-law = Woman Hitler).

The Anagram Times is a news website where news articles and current events are re-interpreted as anagrams. Headlines, important names, and quotes from news articles are taken and anagrammed into different phrases.

Some excellent recent stories to come out of The Anagram Times are:

Cruz and Kasich take on Trump = Men's pact: run, kick out hazard. (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/04/cruz-and-kasich-take-on-trump.html)

Boehner wants Paul Ryan for President = Say, power baron lined up fresh entrant (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/04/boehner-wants-paul-ryan-for-president.html)

Alton Towers = Lot to answer (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/04/alton-towers-owner-facing-huge-fine.html)

Couple sits on bench. After a while they got up = Scene's nice: the two photograph beautifully (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/04/couple-sits-on-bench.html)

Mars Food tells customers to go easy on the pasta sauce = To analyse: Seems too processed, too much salt, sugar, fat (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/04/mars-food-tells-customers-to-go-easy-on.html)

This is an example of a recent story I submitted (I made it into a gif showing the letters moving):
(http://i.imgur.com/AoNtn5G.gif) (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/04/fbi-wont-reveal-method-for-cracking-san.html)

I have a challenge for some of the more experience wordsmiths on here: make a story yourself, from the headline of a recent news story. Take whatever software you prefer for crafting anagrams (I prefer Anagram Artist (https://www.mediafire.com/?e071p06a7f7kido) myself), or craft one by hand, and submit it to The Anagram Times as a possible story for inclusion.

Submit your anagrams here (http://www.anagramtimes.com/p/report.html), and look out for them on the front page! I'm interested in seeing your interpretations of the news!

THe first thing I wondered is if there was an automated tool to generate anagrams because I suck myself at doing them letter by letter. I am tempted to try with CW or Internet-related ones, though.

Who knows, maybe we could take the story of First Fantasy: Mana Force then make a brand new one? O.O

EDIT: Woah, are there really that many possible combinations (several thousands) for Lose the game?

There is, in the way that you're thinking of, but it costs $34.95 USD (http://anagramgenius.com/ag.html). It's wonderful for automatic generation of great anagrams, but the price turns me off to it. Besides, what if you want to make a 1000 letter anagram? :P

Also, sure there are, because there are a lot of words, and the letters in "LOSE THE GAME" are pretty common letters in words. But out of those, only YOU can decide which make sense. My favorite:

Lose the game = Glee to shame.

EDIT: Perhaps we could team up to create one of these games:

Nasty Tariffs: Roman Cafe
Tiffany's Star: Came On Far
Raft Fins Stay: Ocean Farm

Yeah I tried an online generator and the main issue is that most words did not mix well and 99% had totally obscure words I never heard before.

For anyone that's stuck on making good anagrams, or doesn't know what makes an anagram "good", here are some tips.

I'll check this out. My main issue is finding anagrams with verbs that matches the right tense and fits. >.<

Also for those who have over 100 posts on Omni: https://www.omnimaga.org/spam/anagrams-of-the-game I lost :P

This was published just recently, and I'd also gotten an email back from Anu Garg (the guy that runs the site...likely a pseudonym, since Anagram Genius = Name Is Anu Garg) regarding this story, saying "Love it!". Apparently he thinks it's clever. :)

I like how the anagram seems related to the original sentence. :P

Yeah, usually an anagram is related to the original subject, like "Angered = Enraged". Of course, there are some anagrams that are directly opposite the subject, like "The Oscar Nomination = It's not a cinema honor". My personal favorites are the ones that are simply funny, such as "He's a legend in his own mind = Neil Diamond, when he sings". XD

Does your anagram generator actually manage to find matching topics, or do you just provide it matching words?

Anagram Artist is entirely focused on human anagram generation, and the software simply helps. It has one screen that gives you all the words you can possibly make with your subject (and you can select 5 levels of "commonness" to look at), and you are able to enter in option to restrict your words to the ones you want (you can look for a synonym of a word, or look at only words with or without certain letters, or find a certain part of speech, etc.). To make anagrams and enter keywords, you simply type them in the Anagram field. If 25 letters are left, it also auto-generates anagram candidates (not all of them make sense, though, and if it can't make an anagram, it says that it's not possible).

Anagram Genius is almost entirely focused on automatic generation of anagrams. Simply type in a name or phrase, then anagrams are automatically generated and ranked. You can help steer the search in the right direction by offering keywords and topics, and you can select the best anagrams at the end to keep.

As for that specific anagram (and most others I make), I used Anagram Artist, already having the keyword "Mid-East" in mind. Then, I saw the word "action" as a keyword, so I included that. "Refuse at" seemed like the best words usable with the letters that were left.

Ah ok. It would be epic if someone made a software that was smart enough to generate relevant anagrams. :P

Also apparently there are combinations possible for Walriichu, but I don't know if any would make sense. :P

Does the anagram times accept funny or less relevant news as well? Or does it prefer more big world of cultural news? (Thinking along the lines of nottheonion type news)

It should accept any type of recent news. It even recently accepted a news article titled "Couple Sits On Bench" (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/04/couple-sits-on-bench.html) (about Will and Kate's visit to the Taj Mahal). So as long as your anagram isn't something like "Twenty unphilosophical bees fetch outrage", it should be fine.

Also, I got an email regarding this one from Anu Garg saying "You're scaring me!", and I don't know if he's referring to a Trump Presidency, or my volume of recent news offerings in a short amount of time.

ROFL, some of those were funny XD

Also I wonder JWinslow23 if you would have ideas of anagrams for "Happy hardcore raver", "UK Hardcore raver" and "Hardcore Until I die"? I am running out of ideas for new song titles. :P
Title: Re: The Anagram Times!
Post by: JWinslow23 on May 04, 2016, 05:51:28 AM
Submitted new stories! I'm too lazy to animate them right now, so I'll just give the raw forms here:

Ted Cruz Suspends His Campaign for President = Trump seized GOP, and press finds such certain. (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/04/us/politics/ted-cruz.html)

Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee = I prevented! He put up simple monogram: DON T. (http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/03/politics/indiana-primary-highlights/)

The latter has a pun on Donald Trump's name. His name for short is Don T, or "don't", if you join it together.

Also, I got ya covered on new song titles ;)

Happy Hardcore Raver = Very Harder Approach = Harry Craved a Hopper

UK Hardcore Raver = Crave Darker Hour

Hardcore Until I Die = Ridiculed Anti-Hero = Lucid Head Interior = I'd Hurt Alone, I Cried = Cloud Ride In The Air = Hurried Idle Action = I Rule, Heroin Addict = I Die, Curtain Holder

I had the most fun with that last one ;)
Title: Re: The Anagram Times!

Thanks for the ideas. Crave Darker Hours actually sounds cool, especially considering the raver's culture in UK which involved hard drugs. :P I also like Lucid Head Interior, Cloud Ride in the Air and one that is quite funny (but might not be appropriate for upload on every site is "I rule, heroin addict". The Lucid and Cloud ones would be fitting for dreamy happy hardcore songs, though.

Also you should cross-post all the anagrams you made on IRC into this topic, since that clutters the IRC channel up (same with Youtube links with the Youtube thread) and in this topic they would at least not be missed.  :)

By the way, when we do an anagram, do we have to preserve the punctuation for re-use?

No, the punctuation is entirely optional. All that matters is that both words/names/phrases use the same letters. Think of it as arranging Scrabble tiles (or Clabbers, or whatever you call them in Canada :P ).

Punctuation can enhance an anagram, if done right. For example:

The Immaculate Conception = Pathetic cult...I mean, COME ON!

And take that without punctuation:

The Immaculate Conception = Pathetic cult I mean come on

Dull, right? You may add it wherever you feel necessary, and word order doesn't matter either.

Thanks for the info. I felt that being forced to re-use all punctuation would have been too restrictive. >.<

Another day, another two published stories.

Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee = I prevented! He put up simple monogram: DON T. (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/05/donald-trump-presumptive-gop-nominee.html)
DON T is short for Donald Trump; also it spells "don't"

Ted Cruz Suspends His Campaign for President = Trump seized GOP, and press finds such certain (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/05/ted-cruz-suspends-his-campaign-for.html)

EDIT: Apparently, I just got an email from Anu Garg.

Quote from: EmailHi Josiah,

I'd like to add you to The Anagram Times masthead. Let me know where you are located and if you have a preference for a specific title.

Also, I'd like to feature an interview with you in The Anagram Times. Would you be willing to answer a few questions?

Thanks,

Anu

The masthead contains a list of regulars to The Anagram Times and what kind of stories they cover. Some are also featured in interviews, such as this one with Julian Lofts (=Snafu I'll Jot), the New Zealand reporter. I would love to see where this heads.

Famous within a group, but not world-famous, is what I mean. Jason and Julian are wonderful anagrammers, as is Mike, but I remember Meyran to be excellent at anagram construction. Back in the days of the Anagrammy Awards, she was the oldies checker (checking whether or not anagrams are simply rediscoveries). I remember one time having "Quite an ~ antique!" rejected because it had been discovered before. Too bad, I felt so clever when I discovered that.

I just concluded my interview. It consisted of him emailing me a list of questions and me emailing back a list of my responses. I will give a link once it's up.

Some new stories are on The Anagram Times!

Captain America: Civil War = A critical view: crap-mania (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/05/captain-america-civil-war-reviews-what.html)

Kasich ends GOP presidential bid = Aspiring path is blocked, is ended = He did disappoint single backers (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/05/kasich-ends-gop-presidential-bid.html)

Ryan says he is 'not ready' to back Trump, deepening GOP divide = "I'm never supporting a cheeky, odd bigot as President any day!" (http://www.anagramtimes.com/2016/05/ryan-says-he-is-not-ready-to-back-trump.html)

I think these are good, myself. Also, a recently submitted story that will hopefully get published soon:

Top allies break with Ryan over Trump = That may never work. I support liberal! (http://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/paul-ryan-allies-donald-trump-222919)
