Title: How to make a wire from scratch
Post by: Ephraim Becker on December 24, 2015, 02:14:04 PM
I'm planning to make a wire from scratch and all the materials for it from scratch. How do I do this? I don't want to pay for things anymore.

I woudldn't reccomend starting to mine and smelt your own copper to make everything from scratch. If you don't want to pay for wires, then just ask around your friends and family for old electronic devices, and harvest the wires from there.

But I want to make a special wire compatible with my other electronics I want to make from scratch. What are the steps for me to do this?

When most people say "From scratch" they actually think of wires as scratch. Anyway, you can't make wires from air and aking it out of anything else costs more than just buying a roll of wires.

I still want to know how to make a wire from scratch and where I get the copper from.

If you really want to make your own copper, then you'll either have to buy or mine some copper ore. Then you have to find a way to heat it to about 1400K, extract the impurities and cast it into a rod. Then you'll have to 'pull' that rod to lengthen it so much that it becomes a wire.
If you managed to do that, then you'll have to get some plastic or rubber. It's easiest to find some thermoplastic garbage and melt that. Then just basically pour it on the wire to fully encase it in plastic. The quality of recycled plastic isn't that good, but it may still be better than anything you could make yourself.

But before you even attempt this, keep in mind that you could buy a lot of wire with the cost you'd have to put in all resources, machinery and energy/fuel needed to make your own wire, and chances are big that your wire will not be very strong and reliable.
In short: it's much better to either buy wires or pull them out of old/broken electronic devices. Especially big ones, like computers or washing machines, since big devices usually have lots of wires while small devices like calculators often have none at all.

Minecraft in real-life?

What do you even hope to gain out of making your own wire?

Well, let me show you the relevant episodes of How It's Made, shown on Discovery Channel:

If you're able to pull that by yourself, then good luck.

However, if you find a process which makes the whole thing a hell lot of easier, I'm sure the copper-wire-industry got some jobs for you left so money for new wire isn't a problem ;-)

This is pretty relevant by the way I think.

Don't make a wire, make a Brohr (pronounced 'Braw') terminator. This can be any conductive metal, as wire up to diameter 0.3mm, how is it diffferent from an ordinary wire? You can turn it into a diode by remote control (this process only goes from wire to diode and cannot be undone after activation).

Here's the ouch - you will have to split 3 electrons in the wire at specific locations, but orbiting separate atoms of your metal. You have to split them not into 3 pieces of electron each (which humans currently do with lasers) but millions. Then you have to  ***** ****** ***** ***** OH JUST MAKE A F***ING WIRE

This was a UK originated post I mean it wasn't  (-_(//));
