Every single newbie in the last 15 years that started with a ROL3-quality RPG as their first ever project.

Forgive me for not being familliar with this, but is this a good or a bad thing? :P

Its a bad thing if they don't finish but some good projects happen when people build up to that level from small projects. Generally they over hype it and then crumble from lack of practice and time.

Snektron

Yeah i like to build projects from small too. Start with something you are certain of you can make and expand untill it's big and awesome :)

The funniest thing is that I do have enough experience to do it, buuut, you know, I severely lack organization. I hope the school I want to get into will give me the things I lack.

Basically, when someone is new to programming and he decides to start a large RPG, advanced platformer or worse, an OS as his first project ever, he gets overwhelmed because that project is way beyond his programming skills level and ability to manage large projects. Many people in the past did that mistake because they wanted recognition or to follow the steps of the long-time, experienced TI programmers. Result? Hundreds and hundreds of so-called grayscale and massive calc projects that never get past a title screen mockup in terms of completion and false hope given to more naive community members who really expected them to be completed.

This is why people have to work they way from the bottom of the ladder, then slowly move up as they learn new tricks. This is why if an user who is clearly new to programming announces a new grayscale Axe RPG with 40 hours of gameplay you'll see me or the other old members encourage him to start with a demo with less features instead and preferably something less complex if he is still new, so he won't get overwhelmed. But at least so far in overall this doesn't seem to be a problem here. :)

Of course, though, the opposite is true too. If you have been programming calculators for half a decade, yet you still only do menu-based RPGs or fake TI-BASIC shells, then it might be time to take a few steps ahead. :P

Ah okay. indeed i tend to try and make something that's way beyond my scope, but mostly i do some research and if i see its too much i stop and go do something else
