Title: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Yuki on August 25, 2015, 02:05:31 AM
I had this idea since a while for CodeWalrus, but I never really had the time or a good computer/Internet connection to do that, now I have some, I'll ask you guys, what multiplayer game would you play? It should be a game that should play over the internet, that can allow a private server software to be installed, or at least creation of a dedicated group or games. (MMOs also count :P) Also when you'd be available in a week?

Every once in a while, there will be events where we all contest each other in a game, could be the same one each time or not. There will be (non-monetary) prizes and lots of fun! The goal here is to give some way to relax once in a while with other CW members and to keep members interested. So, whatcha think? I'll give you a few days to think about it, while I'll be busy with life some more. :P

Sounds like fun! I'd definitely play minecraft, or some variant of it, or LoL, or Dota 2!

Starcraft 1 and 2 or Warcraft III would be fun. If enough people had a Wii U we could have tried SSB4 tournaments as well. I also played Halo quite a bit in the past on Xbox Live

It doesn't really have to be a contest, though. It could just be to plan some games together and have fun.

Oh, yeah, and the game should probably free. I know I can't buy any games. (saving for some things)

Starcraft II has a free version that lets you play multiplayer custom games, but you can only use Terran race. It's called Starcraft II Starter Edition (available on Battle.net)

QuoteThe FREE Starter Edition of StarCraft II gives you access to the first five missions of the Wings of Liberty single-player campaign, all three races and custom games in multiplayer, and the entirety of the Arcade.

We should keep it PC :P

But yeah, minecraft definitely, but with some modpack (not too heavy though) because vanilla minecraft gets boring very soon.

Agree. I don't think experience with setting up Minecraft servers lacks here, I'll make sure of that.

'Acquire' binaries some way and:
#server.properties
online-mode=false

The fact that all authentication is dropped might be quite the downside, though.

As long the IP isn't share publicy, I guess it is fine. There is plugins who can resolve this too.

Minecraft with modpacks would be nice as long as it's not too many.

I would totally play Splatoon in Minecraft.
I tried it on a "random" server once, but it was annoying because people kept coming in and out, we were either more than 8 or less but never 8, and it lacked that atmosphere there is when you play with friends (or at least people you know).

No idea when I'm available though (not that I'm not, just that I don't know when).
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?

Ideally, the server should be made private so we can't see it in any public listing other than on the forums here.

Otherwise, we can easily alternate between different games, so if a particular user don't own the game this time, the next time it'll most likely be a free game or one they own.

That's a problem with Starcraft II. At the start of every game there is always 1 or 2 people lagging out or leaving on their own >.<

By the way, Omnimaga had a few Starcraft tournaments in the past. Most notably the 2010 or 2011 one where four people did a round robin against each others. The replays are still available on Omni I think. A 2007 tournament was also attempted but it was scrapped after I lost Internet access.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Yuki on August 26, 2015, 02:25:41 AM
I don't really play Starcraft, but I could probably organise such tournaments.

Anyway, if something happens, it's not before I finish moving. Definitely around next week this time.

If the game is maxed out at 5 players, we could always use Hamachi...
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on August 30, 2015, 05:05:01 PM
The problem with Hamachi is that it doesn't work that great over long distances. I once tried to play Starcraft Brood War (which had a LAN multiplayer option) with Hamachi against someone who lived 2K miles away and the lag was just unbearable. Unless that got fixed?
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: TheMachine02 on August 30, 2015, 08:05:00 PM
Well I played with a guy over 6K km and it was fine, so I guess it depends on both connection and the game itself.

No. Hamatchi is just some software that cs up your connection settings only used by people who don't know how to port-forward their router :P
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?

Or who don't have router  :P
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?

But then there's no need to forward... you can literally start the server and tell your friends to connect :P

Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on August 30, 2015, 10:00:19 PM
Doesn't that require you to setup your computer as a server or to buy a VPS somewhere? I am unsure myself about how that stuff works.

That said, with Starcraft, that kind of stuff was obsoleted when iCCup became popular.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: princetonlion.tibd on August 31, 2015, 12:54:57 AM
I'd play Minecraft, War Thunder, and World of Tanks.

I am available only on weekends.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: TheMachine02 on August 31, 2015, 09:39:25 AM
A private codewalrus minecraft server with some mods would definitly be fun indeed. There way too many vanilla server around btw.
Not sure about wich mods should be put though. Also, I think that the weekend is a best in terms of maximum people avaibilty.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: novenary on August 31, 2015, 09:42:51 AM
I used to play minecraft a lot but I find it boring without mods, and I hate modpacks. In the end I got fed up with setting up all the mods by hand and stopped playing. :P
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Snektron on August 31, 2015, 12:02:28 PM
You know there are modpack launchers, right? like ftb, tekkit and atlauncher? :P

But since not everyone has a game pc, it shouldn't be a too big modpack but not too small either else it gets boring really fast.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: TheMachine02 on August 31, 2015, 12:13:18 PM
Yeah I think ~25 mods is okayish, as long as big fat slow mods are mainly server one  :P

I have Halo 2 thru 4 (minus odst) and smash but I'm not to happy about giving my gamertag and stuff away so I probably wouldn't play that. So I can play anything that's web based and maybe even a steam game if I can bother to get my other account open. Also Minecraft is a given but I don't really play it anymore.

Also street mods are almost all self installed now.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on August 31, 2015, 05:44:42 PM
Would you mind giving your gamertag privatwly or is that not OK for you either?
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: CKH4 on August 31, 2015, 11:32:14 PM
Yeah it's more of allowing people who I don't know in real life to see people that I do know in real life and vice versa.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on September 01, 2015, 02:46:52 AM
Oh right. That can be an issue. I hate when I want to play with some people I know online, only to be spammed with invites from work teamates on Xbox Live and vice-versa. Those two groups would probably not mix well since they share totally different interests and hobbies.

I'd play minecraft on a CW server. We'd need some building plans though, I don't like servers where everyone gets a 24x24 square assigned and just builds :P. Also, no vanilla, I'd like some modded stuff. (factories and stuff would be nice)
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: CKH4 on September 01, 2015, 11:50:27 AM
I'd like to suggest having a creative plot area, a creative community build area and possibly even a survival area. I used to be an avid command block user so its possible that I could help although my skills are pretty much 0 now.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: novenary on September 01, 2015, 12:27:14 PM
I still have my huge list of mods from back in the days. Could get the interesting one and start up a server. We need hosting though, if someone wants to pay for a VPS that would be great.

Also I'd prefer running an older version of the game like beta 1.7.3. I started playing when the game was something like beta 1.3 or 1.4, and I really prefer the older versions of the game, before they added all the "adventure update" crap. Minecraft is a sandbox, not an RPG (and the beta 1.8+ versions fail at being one), 1.7.3 doesn't have the stupid stuff, and it keeps all the really nice features. With some mods it would really rock. :)
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: TheMachine02 on September 01, 2015, 01:38:13 PM
Well the version most mods supports is 1.7.10 anyway.  :P
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: novenary on September 01, 2015, 01:40:13 PM
Beta 1.7.3 is before 1.0. :P Back then they just had added pistons, there was no hunger bar, no running (this is actually a cool feature), no villages...
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: TheMachine02 on September 01, 2015, 01:41:03 PM
Aw  :P  Not sure there is many mods for that version though.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: novenary on September 01, 2015, 01:41:28 PM
Oh yes there are, we can just download the older mods (which rocked).
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: aetios on September 01, 2015, 02:08:43 PM
I vote against. I'd prefer the latest minecraft version because it has better support, and there are more and better mods for it, and there's just more features. It's not like keeping that hunger bar filled is that hard.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: novenary on September 01, 2015, 02:23:07 PM
>better support
The old versions are stable, what else do you want ?
>more and better mods
Not true, the old mods were as awesome as the new ones.
>more features
None of them are interesting. :P

Anyway this is just a personal preference, if you guys prefer the new versions we'll go with them instead.

Alright, decided to go for 1.7.10. It would be cool if you guys could suggest a few mods, but not too many or it will be a pain to maintain. :)
Stuff I'm planning to add :

IndustrialCraft 2
BuildCraft
Forestry
NotEnoughItems (no, not in cheat mode :P)
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Unicorn on September 01, 2015, 04:34:41 PM
Maybe Orespawn? Its fairly huge with a ton of bosses, but its easy to get overpowered. If that is a problem, you can always raise the vanilla mobs health.

Mo creatures? I'm not sure how great it is now, but there definitely needs to be some bosses and mobs. Unless forestry already does this?

Anyways, I'm actually running my own moddded survival server, that is kind of like a very stripped down version of crazycraft, if you know what that is.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?

Maybe split off the topic? :P

also i have some mods:

Mekanism
Thaumcraft
Tinkers Construct
Mapwriter (though this is clientside)
Big Reactors? (though this can be heavy)
ComputerCraft
Chisel 2
Hats
Waila
Applied Energistics
Thermal Foundation
Thermal Expansion
Thermal Dynamics
Minefactory Reloaded
Nether Ores
OpenBlocks
EnderIO
JABBA

Yeah, I'd like to keep the mod count to a minimum so that the server remains fast and also so that everyone can run it without having a quantum computer at home (even though I know a few people including myself do have one :P).

Yes, though you have to include enough mods to make the server fun for experienced users.

Also since ComputerCraft is going in maybe there will be some sweet lua programs :P

Nobody been able to factor a 2048-bit key yet, let alone a 1024-bit key. We would definitely have to run stuff on several computers, like Folding@Home and similar stuff.

Agar.io  but actually that would be cool just we would have to use our same user names from here and set up a party.

I would play a minecraft CW modded server but who would we let on and what would the qualifications be?

Also unturned would be a good game as it is free

I guess we can white list CW members, or just leave the server open. I'm still looking for hosting for the server though.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Unicorn on September 10, 2015, 05:53:02 AM
Yeah, we should have it open in the beginning, I think, then make it white-listed if we need to. Also, my friend has some experience with hosting, so I'll ask him about a good company if you want.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on September 10, 2015, 05:56:35 AM
We might want to restrict it to CW members or only allow active users to join, but it's up to you. The server would also need good uptime and not be hosted on CW server, so that it won't slow the site down.
Title: Re: What multiplayer games would you play?
Post by: novenary on September 10, 2015, 08:37:56 AM
Ideally we'd like a vps, not game-specific hosting so that we can host more than a minecraft server. For $20 a month we can get a dual core with 2GB ram which is a pretty good price:specs. I can't pay for it myself, and I don't think it would be a wise idea to dig in the donation pool for the main site.
There's absolutely no room on the cw server to run a game server anyway due to ram constraints (the site itself hardly manages to fit in 1GB).

It would needs to be a standalone VPS. Minecraft requires 8 GB of RAM per online user, right?

It would needs to be a standalone VPS. Minecraft requires 8 GB of RAM per online user, right?

Yeah, plus 2TB of ram just for java.

Do you guys program in C? Because you're salty as c

I really love Teeworlds. But, since I am guessing what all of you guys want is something you can just hop on for a bit and do some things without any organization, Minecraft is pretty good :P

If you end up making a modded Minecraft server, here are some mods that are really good/are my favorite:

Well, that's only because 29 GB is just Juju's stuff, leaving only 1 GB for the site. He should probably move his stuff elsewhere (such as Soru server) since CW server was mainly to host this site, not BroniesQC nor his stash of anime memes. :P But yeah, overall I value site performance more than having a Minecraft server.

Nope, we are exagerrating quite a bit above, because in the past I often heard that Minecraft servers required 1 GB of RAM per online users or even 8 GB upfront. :P

Neh mate, 2GB was enough for a 6-person private server

I have 3 gb towards a private modded server, and it doesn't lag to bad with 2 people on it

2GB should be good to host at least 20 players. Not sure with mods but it should still be good.

Damn this was my 1337th post. :\

Minecraft should not take 1GB per user. When playing single player, it rarely goes anywhere close to 1GB, even though i have a 32 bit redstone computer running with 3GB alocated to the jvm. Personally, i would not like if it had plugins that dramaticly changed the game, or if the server required a custum mod pack, unless maybe teckit or FTB which where quite popular and are easy to install. Then again, there are probably few mods at this time for 1.9. It would be cool, however, if we had plugins made by our own members :D

NB: A plugin is just a server side change, but a mod requires the user to mod his client in order to connect to the server.

My main concern with mods is if a server only allows 1 single type of Minecraft configuration of mods in it. For example, if users have to uninstall all other mods they have in order to get in. That would be annoying if we play on multiple servers.

Also, if a CW Minecraft server was gonna be started, it would be better if people didn't all start their own small servers like on Omnimaga. Everyone should probably stay together.

Also, a CW Minecraft server should require users to post a minimum of three times per week on CW in order to get in, to avoid Minecraft driving people away from calc forums like in the past.

You don't need to have remove all your mods, minecraft allows for multiple profiles.

Oh I didn't know that. That's good then. I just remember horror shows such as Starcraft: Brood War mods. In fact, sometimes with softwares we didn't even need a single mod in order to run into such problem: Back in the days, in order to use GIMP, you had to uninstall the GTK version that TilEm and TIEmu used and switch to a different one, then once you were done with the emulators, you had to switch back to the other version in order to run GIMP. Same probleem with Python 2.6 vs 3.0 IIRC.

Python 2 and 3 are incompatible but both can be installed on the same system, it's just a matter of setting things up right. I believe it's also possible to do that with gtk but I have no idea how it works on windows. The right way is to build all software against the same version, this way they're all compatible (and that's what Linux distros do, since they all build and package their own software for the official repos, unofficial repos are built upon the official ones as well).

TiLem and TiEmu actually fixed that IIRC, but since TiEmu hasn't been updated in a long while, I hope that the GTK issue with GIMP isn't back. D:

But doesn't forge take mods from the same mods folder regardless of what version?

Not if you tell minecraft to use a different base directory. Also I kinda lost motivation to host a server now so unless someone else volunteers there probably won't be one. Sorry guys.

Ah, I see.

Awe... really? I have a machine that can host a server, but I'd be better if an admin hosted it.

Well if someone was to help me pick the mod and set them up it would be great. Also we still don't have a host, nor anyone who wants to pay for a VPS so yeah.

I could set the whole server up, depending if you want to have permissions, and send it over to a host...

But I'm not the best for picking mods

Do you have VPS setup skills and stuff? Because that would probably be quite a bit of work in the first place, let alone setting up MInecraft on it.

I have a modded minecraft server running on one of my computers at home, if that counts.  I can set that up again, of course.

But putting the server files into VPS someone buys, I don't know how to do that.

There's a lot of work behind the scenes besides running the Minecraft server. You need a few scripts to do that for backup and management purposes. It's not the hard part but it requires knowledge.

I know that ForgeEssentials does backups, (it saved me a few times) In terms of backing up to something like drive, I think that might be the owner of the VPS's job...

I wouldn't be able to set up any permissions, as I stated before.

Brent and me have a (private) DW20 server set up, and it plays quite well. We could maybe consider taking that as modpack since its in the FTB launcher and not too heavy. Though brents server can't run 24/7 so that won't be an option.

Yeah that worked quite well. Got 50 FPS on medium-low settings on my notebook-graphics pc.

I play TF2 and Running With Rifles. The first is pretty self explanatory, but the second is by far my favorite. I really encourage you guys to check it out even though is costs $14.99. I used to play Minecraft. I used to.

Never heard about Running with Rifles before. Is it hard to control? Because I am used to FPSes and 2D side-scrolling run and gun games, not top-down shooting games.

No love for Unreal Tournament 2004? ;_;
I play both UT2004 and Minecraft, not much else though.

I would play TF2, Running With Rifles, and Rainbow Six Siege(when it comes out and if I have the money for it), and For Honor(If I had the money). The new Star Wars game seems promising as well...
