Messages - Decon Theed

Figured I'd start up a dedicated thread for this, rather then cluttering up the Welcome thread for new users.

As I mentioned in said thread, I'm a TIMGUL oldie, and have been a Music series loyalist since I was about 8 or 9. I've fiddled around with other programs here and there- I've done some chiptune work using DETUNE Inc.'s "iYM2151" iPad app, and I've done a bit of mucking around with FL Studio- but Music 2000 is the program I cut my teeth on, and over the years I've picked up a number of tricks and skills to combat it's various limitations. Part of why I've stuck with it, besides simple familiarity, is the aesthetic quality of it's output; songs made in Music 2000 tend to sound very "oldschool", because... well, it's a sequencer that's nearly two decades old. When you primarily write music harkening back to older electronica styles or mid-to-late-90s video game music styled stuff, that quality is a boon, haha.

I'm gonna kick this thread off with a little bit of a comparison, using two of the albums currently available on my bandcamp page. The first is a large collection of my older work;

A few odds and ends here were posted back in my TIMGUL days, some of it came after or never made it to the forums for whatever reason, and there's even a few pre-TIMGUL pieces I wrote 10 years ago (those are the ones that were quite obviously recorded on a battery-powered-MP3-player-microphone, natch). The quality of composition and arrangement is all over the board, but it's a pretty good showcase of the various different things I tried to achieve the sounds and styles I wanted, as well as a decent rundown of my evolution over the course of time.

Compare and contrast that to my most recent work, written at the end of last year:

I picked up the tradition of doing a yearly christmas album in 2012, wherein the idea is to write a new song every two days between the 2nd of December to Christmas Eve- resulting in 12 tracks, of course. Needless to say writing 12 fleshed out songs in a 24 day period is a grueling undertaking (and thanks to unfortunately timed family tragedies, last year's was a particularly brutal process), but it's been an invaluable practice in refining and developing my musical skillset. With each new 12 Tracks album, a spike in the quality of the music I make has tended to follow, and some of the best material I've written has come from these little albums. It's also nothing short of a miracle that this was the first time in five years when I didn't manage to get 12 finished pieces out over the course of December, but 10 out of 12 ain't bad either!

Oh, and to clear up before there's any confusion; all the aliases listed on both albums are me. I split my music up over a couple of names based on genre/style, or in some cases use one-off names for certain projects. As I host music by other artists on 103 Records, I designated which pieces are actually mine on albums with a little "all music/tracks x-thru-y composed by Decon Theed" tags, but honestly, you'll be able to tell which ones are mine by sound alone if you opt to go digging around the site for further listening :P Each alias is also repped by a little character (or in some cases, entire fictional bands ala Gorillaz), who occasionally pop up in album and promo art.

I've been on a bit of a sabbatical from music composing this year for a host of personal reasons, but as and when new music happens I will happily update this thread for those that are interested- I also highly emplore you to check out other releases on the site, both my work and the work I host by other musicians. If you've got any questions about my music writing process, by all means ask- I genuinely love talking about my creative process, lol.

God, I daren't even think where the folks that used to hang 'round TIMGUL have gotten to these days; I never really stayed in proper contact with any of 'em. I do know Not a Number still produces music, but I think they've moved on from music M2K by this point. There are definitely a few folks keeping the Music series love alive out there besides us TIMGUL faithfuls, though, so it's not all doom and gloom~

As far as merging the databases go, it's a neat long term goal but yeah, I can see it being a hell of a lot of hard work.

Hey, congratulations DJ! The first CD releases of one's own music is always a great thing. I'll certainly pick up an album or two on my next payday ;)

Thank you for the warm welcome (and the kind offer), p2~!

I am thoroughly impressed by your artwork, mazhat; it's extremely expressive, cartoony, and for lack of better terminology "loose bodied", all of which makes it incredibly appealing in my book. Definitely keep at it, and definitely keep sharing it- I know I'd like to see more! :)

Just DL'd all the stuff on your bandcamp page, CMG; I remeber digging a few of your bits and pieces back in the TIMGUL days, so I'm looking forward to hearing it all :)

I also echo the sentiment of setting your stuff to a "pay what you want" model; I know I like to throw cash down for music I enjoy when I've got the pocket money to spare, and going the "pay what you want" route stops it from being brickwalled for folks who can't pay for it for whatever reason. That's the model I use for my own releases via Bandcamp.

Thanks a ton for the warm welcome, guys; it is greatly appreciated~!

Awww, I'm flattered to hear you've still got some of my old stuff, Omnimaga. Yeah, I will definitely check your stuff out; I saw you've got a bandcamp page, and I've gone ahead and followed it. I recognise a few of the old releases from back in the day ;) I'll definitely have to go through it all when I get a bit of time to spare.

I created this account primarily to leave a little post/thank you in a specific thread, but the community sounds like a pretty nice one so I figured I'd stick around and say hello!

My name's Decon Theed; I don't have any coding experience, but I write music- including some soundtrack work here and there on a couple of low-key (and still in development) indie games. I used to primarily post on Omnimaga's old TIMGUL forums back when they still ran under the name J-MACHine, and I still use the same software I used back then in t'good old days; Music 2000. No idea if linking stuff is considered rude or not, but I post my music for streaming via a personal soundcloud account here: https://soundcloud.com/103_records

Other'n that, there's not much else to say; I'm a big music fan and collector (there's not a single genre of music I don't like, but I favour various forms of Electronic music and Video Game music in particular), and I'm also a fairly big fan of video games- particularly arcade games. I've written a few pieces relating to video game music both for personal projects and for my job as a freelance content writer, and I research the subject in my spare time (although I'm by no means an expert on it  ;)). Oh, yes; I also host a small netlabel via bandcamp called 103 Records, which serves both as a place to host my own music as well as music by friends or associates of mine - https://103records.bandcamp.com/

Oh, man, word's cannot begin to describe how pleased I am this archive exists; I'm only sad I didn't stumble on it sooner, haha~!

I used to post on TIMGUL under the name "J-MACHine", and it was probably the first major hub I shared my music through (before that, I recall sticking things up on ZippyShare and hoping for the best). I don't think I was around much during the drama, so most of the memories I have of the site are fairly positive; if nothing else, it was just nice hearing music from other folks that used software in the Music line. And, in a round about way, it helped legitimise my decision to use Music 2000 during a time when I felt very self conscious about not using "real" software- something I've stuck with to this day, as it happens.

One of my biggest regrets was losing access to a number of songs I'd DL'd from the site over the time I was there, so needless to say I'm stoked to be able to grab stuff from there again! I think there might even be a few pieces of mine I'd lost access to that are still there, too, so that'll be handy.

Major thanks for putting the work in to get this archive set up, Omnimaga; this is gonna be a serious trip down memory lane~ :)
