Title: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: novenary on February 02, 2015, 10:53:29 AM

Eyup, it's a thing. They (finally) upgraded that piece of trash they called a CPU, and upgraded the RAM to 1GB. Thatd pretty much all but I'm definitely buying it. :D

Oh wow, that's awesome now. I was always reluctant about buying one before because of the RAM and I feared that CPU speed might eventually become a problem for me.

Yeah, I just saw it, I should definitely buy one now that the specs are awesome enough for $35.

I hope they ever make a pi with a sata interface, cause SD cards are incredibly slow.

Really? I didn'tvrealize they were. One thing that would rule is a RPi with a SSD, but then it would cost much more.

Yeah, I was already considering buying one but this definitely pushed me over the line.

Maybe the Banana Pi ?

Aldo lol Cumred, my b r2 is just gonna remain a gamecube modchip for the rest of its poor life. :P

That reminds me, is it possible to build a desktop computer or something that can almost completely function like one just from a RPi? I mean putting the mobo inside the computer case and connecting all the missing components.

I tried once with a friend's Pi, this is possible, you just have to plug a screen, keyboard and mouse in and there you go. But that would be pretty slow, due to the SD card.

Aah ok. What if that computer just ran something like Mint and was only used to play NES/SNES/N64 games?
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: Yuki on February 03, 2015, 03:10:59 AM
If you don't run X, that would probably be doable.

By the way, Microsoft announced Windows 10 would run on it (https://dev.windows.com/en-us/featured/raspberrypi2support). For free. So you can now buy a good computer for only $35?
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 03, 2015, 03:55:36 AM
Wait, do you mean Windows 10 is free or is it free only for RPi users? If that's the case, then I would rather go with it so it's easier to play my older games.

Only the RPi version would be free. (They also said something about free upgrades on desktops, but that's another story.) Microsoft now have an Internet of Things (IoT) program that encourages development on boards such as the RPi, apparently.

I wouldn't call 10MB/s U/D slow personally.

I use mine as a remote desktop to Purdue's network.  With decent network speed, I love it!

Unfortunately I just got a B+ for Christmas.  Oh well, I'm still happy :)

My USB3.0 external HDD gets to more than ten times this speed, though. USB flash is also something like 100mb/s ud. So yea, in comparison SD is incredibly slow.

okay now hook up a PI 2 to your ti 84 with usb to boost it's performance
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 03, 2015, 04:16:41 PM
I got USB 2.0 only so my fastest external HDD is about 40 MB/sec while the slowest is 20 MB/sec. That's when not copying stuff to both simultaneously, though, in which case it won't ever get above 40 MB/sec total.

Also lol I think RPi guys will have a lot of work on their plate because even their site is slow now, due to all the traffic from people rushing to get the Raspberry Pi 2. I am willing to bet that unless they are many people creating RPi boards that it will take a few months to get one shipped to you.
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2

I remember when they first came out, it took half a year for shipping.
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on February 04, 2015, 05:13:28 AM
That is nice. I guess they figured that people who get the Pi will most likely get a more powerful platform at one point, on which Windows 10 is paid ;). But for now I still need to buy the Raspberry Pi 2 anyway, which doesn't appear to be available on the official site.

I wonder if any Canadian site sells it? Or any American site that ships to Canada? Because I don't want to buy from European/Australian resellers who will charge 50% higher than their North American counterpart. <_<

So I got one of those the other day, it's /much/ faster than the original model but it still suffer from the lack of hardware acceleration. This means that browsers are slower than on a phone, and even running vim in the framebuffer with syntax coloring is sluggish. <_<

I couldn't get snes9x to run (maybe it was just that it didn't like Earthbound), xbmc/kodi runs wonderfully tho. But yeah, still not usable as a general purpose computer.

Sorry to hear about lack of hardware acceleration. I would have thought that it got some considering that the HP Prime does and is a calculator. ???

I personally might just go with the CHIP computer since it's much cheaper.
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: novenary on May 14, 2015, 09:25:53 AM
Well it has a very nice GPU (same as the first pi) but there's still no driver for the GUI to use it. I settled with using a framebuffer console to run vim and do Nspire dev in that.
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 15, 2015, 05:55:55 AM
Wait, is it powerful enough to run the Nspire emulators? I always felt it was very tedious to develop for a calc that lacks an emulator or requires me to send the files non-stop to my calc.
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: novenary on May 15, 2015, 06:28:35 AM
No, the emulator uses x86 ask so it's not very portable. But I automated the sending process, I just need to press a key to compile and send to the calc.

Aah that's good then. I wish that jsTIfied actually supported that feature in Chrome/Opera for Z80 development (it doesn't work for some reasons).
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: Snektron on May 15, 2015, 09:12:30 AM
That would make developement with the IO port way easier <_<
Title: Re: Raspberry Pi 2
Post by: Dream of Omnimaga on May 16, 2015, 06:32:25 AM
Oh I meant that jsTIfied can let you send your entire project from SourceCoder to the emulator, not the calc. But that feature doesn't work properly in those browsers. It would be nice if it also supported sending to the calc directly I guess, although I think it might be best if it didn't require extra drivers in addition to the ones from TiLP and TI-Connect CE.

The new Windows 10 IoT is not what you might think it is. It has no real builtin programs except for the bare OS things and no desktop and no explorer.
It has some sort of wired SSH or Telnet server and you can download apps to it. But it makes GUI development a bit easier than on Linux. It might be worth trying it out, but in my opinion Linux is in many fields the better OS for the Pi. Although for beginners and in speical cases the Windows 10 IoT might be quite nice.

Firebird runs on the pi2, but even with JIT it's quite slow.

I've been using a Beaglebone Black for a while. Looks like the Raspi 2 is a bit more powerful, so I might get one. Not sure, though.

Well from what I tried the Pi 2 I don't feel any difference to the Pi B+
BTW. I have a beaglebone black too, it's quite nice as it has a lot more IO than the Pi 2.

Oh, the pi2 runs Firefox (!) just fine. It's definitely faster than the old one. The 4 cores help keep the ui responsive, it's just that anything that draws to the screen is still too slow. As in low framerate and lots of tearing because no vsync.

Does that include Atari 2600, NES and SNES emulators, Street?

The raspberry pi should be able to emulate consoles of up to generation 5 (Playstation 1, Nintendo64) at full speed, so it shouldn't have any problems with Atari 2600, NES and SNES. While the general UI is slow and has lots of tearing, applications that render on the GPU are very responsive and they worked well. While I didn't try any emulators on it, I tried Minecraft on that thing, and I was amazed at how smooth it was.

I do like the fact the Beaglebone has so much more IO. I'm going to be sticking to the Beaglebone for a while, until something better (in my opinion) comes out.

Ah nice. I was worried when he said "anything that draws to the screen" and thought that he meant it literally.

That said, with all the reports about speed issues, I think I'll pass on the RPi2 for now. Especially with shipping costs and the Canadian dollar, I am better off sticking to my Nexus 5 for the time being, since getting a new computer device is not high enough in my priorities.

Well the raspberry pi is more interesting for programmers and people who know a bit of linux and just want to mess around with small server applications. You probably won't have anything to do with the Pi, DJ. :P

I hoped to use the RPI to interact with some electronics and create a few small circuits to play around with, since i could set pins from my PC via SSH. Though sadly my rpi has given up and is extremely slow for some reason (a few months back it was fine)

Huh, that is a shame. It's a bit weird because my pi's (1 and 2) run fine (although I don't use them often).
