Hey guys, here on CodeWalrus we always strive to give you the best experience we can on the forums. We heard your complains and suggestions, so the staff team decided to transfer the site to a completely new forum software we wrote. We were working on it a bit in secret since a while now, there's still a few issues we should figure out, but things should work. It's a completely novel way to use the forum, I guess you'll have to get used to it a bit, but I'm pretty sure you'll like it. The change will occur sometime today as most of the server admins will be on, if you don't see it right away there will be a prompt to try the new site out, and the best thing, if you don't like it you can always go back to the previous interface as we know it as both sites will run in parallel.

Just warning you before we put it online, if you have issues with the new thing, you can always complain as usual in the usual section. Otherwise, have fun!

And yeah, I see the date, I assure you it's completely unrelated. You know me, my "april fools" changes always tend to stick, eh MLP Québec, who completely changed URLs and names on a 1st of April? :P

EDIT: Happy April's Fools, of course the site ain't gonna change, but if you liked it, you still can access it from https://codewalr.us/os

Contests / CWick Contest #4: The Tau Problem
February 28, 2017, 05:03:02 AM
Wait what? It's back? Well, then. Today I ask you the 1000 first digits of tau. I think @JWinslow23 will love this one. So if you remember how it's done, I ask you a program that have this output exactly (or more):

You're allowed mostly everything, a calc (scrolling or output to a Str variable might be needed), a PC, a Google Home that speaks the output, whatever. This is also a code golf contest: smaller is better, but it will also be judged on how original the method to produce or to show the output is, be it an algorithm, compression or whatever, and also how fast it is. You need not to have that output exactly, variations are allowed, as long as it shows more or less these digits. Standard code golf pitfalls from Stack Overflow applies.

Send the sources of your entries to [email protected]. Contest ends Monday March 13th 23:59:59 EST. (Two weeks this time, because it's a big one.)

Note that the schedule is now whenever I feel like. Feel free to send ideas for future contests like this.

NOTE: Server is currently offline until further notice. Thanks!

So I see there's a bunch of Matrix users here, so naturally, I started a channel on there. So if you're on there you can join room #codewalrus:codewalr.us and join the fun!

If you're new to this, a good client is https://riot.im/: it features browser, desktop and mobile apps. You can either register an account with any homeserver available (default is matrix.org but you can easily run your own) or use our custom homeserver http://codewalr.us (add :8448 if it doesn't work, leave identity server default) and log in with your CodeWalrus account to get a @YourCWUsername:codewalr.us. (If your username contain spaces or other weird characters, please get in touch.) Then you can search for #codewalrus:codewalr.us and join the room.

Right now, it's a bit experimental and might be a bit slow as the synapse server should refrain from eating all the available RAM (the matrix.org instance uses quite a lot of memory and disk space, but it's pretty big, ours should be way smaller and hopefully not use all the RAM and disk we have left), but you are welcome to come in and test! Matrix has quite a bunch of features WalrusIRC does not have like end-to-end encryption and other fun things, so maybe it may one day replace it and fully integrate with the forum.

FAQ

Q: Is there an IRC bridge?

A: Yes. There's a bunch of them, however, they create a new IRC client for each Matrix user (and vice-versa), which may be problematic with EFNet. matrix.org provides a bridge with Freenode and we're using it with our old channel on Freenode for the time being.

Q: There's something not working/a feature you should add

A: First or all, try again. Still not working? You can always complain in this thread. Additionally, the code for the forum auth provider is published at https://github.com/juju2143/matrix-synapse-smf, you can always check it out, I've left a bunch of TODO comments in the code, such as the problem below and syncing avatars, emails, display names and stuff.

Q: I can't get in with the CW homeserver

A: You can't register on this server. There's a few bugs left to squash with the login process, the most major one being with usernames with spaces and other weird characters Matrix might not like, if you're in this situation, please get in touch with me. The server might probably just be off, in that case, try again later. Feel free to register with another homeserver such as matrix.org or create your own, though.

Q: Can I link my several Matrix accounts with the CodeWalrus one?

A: I'm not aware you can do that, but you can easily pick one to use with any channel on any server you want and ditch the rest. Your account on the CW homeserver might be used for future integration with the website, though.

Q: Can I host a room for my project on the CW server?

A: Sure thing. Just create a new channel and integrate with IRC with the available bots if needed.

Q: I need help

A: Just poke me.

Q: There's no walruses

A: It indeed lack walruses. This should be fixed.

Have fun!

Happy new year, and 2 years of walruses!

(You'll need AdBlock, uBlock or compatible installed, obviously.)

Additionally, this will also unblock Project Wonderful ads on other websites such as MS Paint Adventures/Homestuck (they also use Google Ads so they should still be blocked). If you don't want that, you only have to click on this button on your toolbar to easily unblock codewalr.us instead. Useful if you only want to unblock our ad at the top while still blocking whatever malicious thing that would probably creep out from the Facebook/Twitter like buttons.

While we're at it, I also filed a request to AdBlock to add us on their Acceptable Ads thing. Because why not. Again, they have a check somewhere to disable that, but that would mean our ads are enabled by default for AdBlock users.

So, this was my gift to you guys for today, have fun and happy Christmas Eve! (or whatever they call it in your country)

Hardware / My Christmas tree
December 05, 2016, 07:44:39 AM

Video of it in action
(sorry for bad lighting but you get my point :P)

I think I made that a few years ago, made it again this year, got some fakeish plastic Christmas tree-like cone and a battery-powered set of lights at the dollar store, put those together, wired where the batteries would be to my TI C2000 Launchpad (because my brother has my Arduino), fired up the Fade example in Energia and there you go, a programmable USB Christmas tree. Still have to figure out how to serial port with Energia, but had I have my Arduino, could have done some fancy blinking stuff with it. Not that I already can do fancy stuff.

Are you doing some Christmas-themed projects this year?

Kinda specific topic title, but there's a few of them I'm looking for. One is based on a Japanese manga, the other on a French comic. Both things you can't go wrong, else the fans would be disappointed.

Warning: topic may contain heavily opinionated and/or NSFW content.

Ghost in the Shell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkg3AxpcZ6s

Warning: may contain naked Scarlett Johansson being badass. Well, some say it's cultural appropriation and/or whitewashing, but I call bullc. This looks pretty good so far, and I don't care, the Japanese don't care either if it's a white person being cast as a Japanese if it's the best they can get. And looks like it is. Seems they also took extra care to make it faithful to the manga/anime, just look at the comparaison. (Again, warning, may contain NSFW.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CDID-W8fiA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsiepGvjjTM

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5o2XWgjCTjc

Written and directed by Luc Besson. I tell you, you can't go wrong with Luc Besson, who also wrote The Fifth Element. Also Lucy, which starred Scarlett Johansson, talking about her. Well, this one also looks pretty good and I'm looking forward to it.

I've never read or watched either of them, but yeah, looks pretty good.

Eh, I'm not sure anyone here have Macs but guess it'd be useful to put this here.

I've recently started playing with AppleScript, which is a pretty powerful thing that lets you script pretty much anything on your system, akin to bash shell scripts, except you can also script supported (and unsupported?) GUI applications to do things like clicking on a particular button or opening a particular menu. So of course, you can use it to TAS the whole system, why not?

Here's one script that I wrote for Undertale, there's a basis to TAS games, right now it pretty much starts the game and names the player as there's no real "key up/down" feature, or at least, it's broken... But at least it starts as soon as it's launched. To run this script you must have bought Undertale on Steam and have not saved yet.

Maybe it can be used to TAS calc games, that would be fun.

Code (AppleScript) Select

-- Keypress function, gets keycode, delay time (in 15ths of a second) and repeats in arguments
on kp(keycode, dtime, x)
tell application "System Events"
repeat x times
key code keycode
delay dtime / 15
end repeat
end tell
return
end kp

-- Useful key codes for Undertale
set z to 6
set x to 7
set c to 8
set kleft to 123
set kright to 124
set kdown to 125
set kup to 126

tell application "System Events"
-- Detects whether UI elements are enabled, if not we prompt the user to enable it in System Preferences then quit
set isEnabled to UI elements enabled
if isEnabled is false then
tell application "System Preferences"
activate
set current pane to pane id "com.apple.preference.security"
display dialog "This script uses macOS' GUI Scripting feature, which is currently disabled. Please enable Script Editor to control your computer in the security pane." with icon 1 buttons {"Cancel"} default button 1
return
end tell
end if
-- Opens Undertale from Steam (close Undertale first for optimum sync)
do shell script "open steam://run/391540"
-- Now we wait until the window is shown
repeat until window "UNDERTALE" of process "UNDERTALE" exists
end repeat
-- Make sure it's on top (kinda useless but we never know)
set frontmost of process "UNDERTALE" to true
end tell
-- Now press those keys super fast
kp(z, 45, 1)
kp(z, 1, 2)
kp(kright, 1, 2)
kp(kdown, 1, 1)
kp(z, 1, 1)
kp(kleft, 1, 3)
kp(kdown, 1, 5)
kp(z, 1, 1)
kp(kright, 1, 3)
kp(kup, 1, 2)
kp(z, 1, 1)
kp(kleft, 1, 3)
kp(kdown, 1, 2)
kp(z, 1, 1)
kp(kdown, 1, 1)
kp(kright, 1, 1)
kp(z, 1, 1)
kp(kright, 1, 1)
kp(z, 1, 1)

I do believe you can do that on other operating systems, Xorg in particular have a tool for simulating keypresses and mouse clicks, Windows probably have a program for that as well.

Inspired by similar projects involving Sailor Moon, Star Wars, Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh, here's a new project of mine, quite ambitious this time: reanimating the first episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, with the styles of many, many fan animators.

Announcement video here. (As seen on Equestria Daily!)

As I write this, we have 40 animators already working on it, this is going to be great.

Site News & Announcements / CodeWalrus: Now with ads!
October 07, 2016, 10:07:35 PM
Well, we got the suggestion a few days ago, we looked at our options and we delivered. Well, I know what you're thinking, ads are usually annoying and full of viruses (eh, Google AdSense?). Well, we hardly make any profit with CW and we don't look for it either, and we're all Internet users like you with AdBlock on, so we looked for the best we can. And this is the best we found.

Project Wonderful works unlike other ad providers: advertisers bid on a particular ad space, just like on eBay and such. Click here to find out. That means that if you have some money to spare, you can get an ad for your project just here in the ad box and we get most of the profits! And yeah, that means we get less third-party advertsers from random places (although they could still find us in Project Wonderful's search engine, but I'll have to approve them), so we get more ads related to us. Isn't that great? Click on the "Your ad here" link to get started!

Of course, I don't think this could ever cover our server costs, but if it does, good! I do it more for your project's visibility than anything. If you're the first bidder, you don't pay for now, but if there's more than one bidder, that's great! Don't forget that I'll have to approe all ads before they show up on the site.

Of course, since we're not paid per click or anything, we still get paid if you enable AdBlock or not, but it's recommended to disable it for the site to see all the nice ads our users would put there and to help Project Wonderful to get more accurate statistics for our site.

I want to see all the nice things you put there! If you need help to advertise here, or you have some suggestions, please tell us!

EDIT: Congrats to @kotu who graces us with the first ever ad on CodeWalrus. Right now, he gets free advertisement, but If you want to try to outbid him, feel free to do so!

I was thinking of this the other day, as far as I know, there is no emulator yet that supports re-recording. (Well, yes, there's BizHawk, but its TI-83 emulation is very preliminary.) By re-recording, I mean, mainly being able to record input in a file to be replayed later and other tools useful for making TASes. Recording input would definitely be useful as you might even build a device that emulates a TI Keyboard and send the movie file to the calc. Wouldn't that be great?

Well, that's my thoughts, take note emu developers, I want to see this happen.

A while ago, I wrote some utility that suggests an outline color based on fill color, very useful for artists that works on this style. It's based on an algorithm devised by Minty Root, well known Flash animator in the pony community and one of my friends, based on an analysis of the colors in successful kids show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I'm currently rewriting the tool based on the feedback I got in the community while testing new stuff.

I was working on this project before @gbl08ma diagnosed my calculator as having passed away (read, mysteriously bricked) after only 2 days... Figured I'd post what I have right now before marking the project as inactive. (Until I get a new one, DJ lends me his while taking extra care to not brick it and/or someone somehow figures out how to unbrick it, that is. I never really heard of those calcs being bricked this easily, having known... Oh well. That's a real bummer.)

I had this idea the other day, why not porting a TCP/IP stack to the Prizm? With a protocol like SLIP or PPPoS, that would definitely work over the serial port. That would kinda be like CalcNet, on the TI-83+ series, but you won't need an Arduino or something. (Well, I use one, but you don't even need the Atmega chip on it. Only its TTL converter so you'd have a serial device on the computer.) Who knows all the applications you could do with that? That would be quite nice.

Right now, there's some sort of scrolling UI that basically works (should be useful for an IRC client) and the start of a port of the TCP/IP stack.

Anyway, here's the code: https://github.com/juju2143/PrizmIRC

Site News & Announcements / New arcade!
April 07, 2016, 06:31:10 AM
Well, this was a feature we were shooting for since the site opened, then probably forgot about, but here's a new section of the site we just opened: The Arcade. You might remember it as a rather popular feature back in the Invisionfree and SMF 1.1 days on Omnimaga, well it's pretty much the same principle, but this time we're adding the games the community made, be it a web game, a calc game or a PC game, as long it works in the arcade. More and more games will be added over time, we hope you enjoy the first one we added, Opossum Massage Simulator by @DJ Omnimaga, ported to SDL by @gameblabla.

Arcade / Arcade Bugs and Suggestions Thread
April 07, 2016, 03:59:17 AM
Welcome to our CodeWalrus Arcade, featuring all your favourite games made by the community for calculators, playable straight from your web browser! Of course, you need a recent browser in order to play.

How to add games
This section is read-only, only staff should be able to add a thread, so if you made a good game just notify the admins or post in this thread and we'll gladly add it, if we're able to compile it for the web, or using an emulator we have that works in Javascript. Games using Javascript, SDL or KnightOS are known to work with the Arcade, although we won't host copyrighted ROMs at this time, so TI-BASIC/Axe/Asm/etc. games are pretty much no. If in doubt, feel free to ask.

How to play
Instructions should be given in each thread.

This section is very experimental, so a few bugs may appear here and there. Make sure you have the latest version of a recent browser before making a bug report.

Other / Square Root Day

It's 4/4/16, which has the interesting property that 4*4=16. Doing anything interesting for that?

If you missed it, see ya for the next one in 2025, I guess.

Gaming / Twitch Plays Calculator

You know the Twitch Plays Pokémon concept, where a game takes its input from the Twitch chat? Well you can do that with a calculator now, apparently. It's playing Sorunome's Reuben Quest remake right now, join and play for yourself! The instructions are in the description.

20 years after the world champion of chess has been defeated to a computer, will Google do the same for a game way more complicated than chess, the ancient Asian game of Go?

Calculator News, Coding, Help & Talk / Ndless 4.2 is out!
February 19, 2016, 09:26:40 PM

It's working! <insert mad scientist laugh here>

Remember the big red warning in my last news about Nspire OS 4.2? Well, I guess it lasted only a good 3 days. That was fast.

Indeed, Ndless 4.2, working on the OS 4.2 that has been released 3 days ago, which is an answer to Ndless 4.0 released about a month and a half ago, has been released. The cat and mouse game is going strong these days, it seems.

Installation is the same as 4.0, you can even refer word-by-word to the Ndless 4.0.3 news and replace the version number with 4.2.

Bit of a bad news today, as with most TI-Nspire OS releases, the newest OS 4.2 is out for release as of today. Same Boot1 and Boot2, but among the new features we have new IO functions (Get, GetStr and Send) and, most importantly, as you can guess by now, it blocks Ndless 4.0.3, as released last month, without any way to downgrade.

So in short, as we say almost every release of the OS...

DO NOT INSTALL THE NEW NSPIRE OS 4.2 IF YOU WANT NDLESS.

Well, until a new version of Ndless fixes it all. (EDIT 19/02/2016: Which is coming soon already?)

Anyone using Discord here? It's like IRC and Telegram, but with voice channels. Started using it a few time ago when a few groups I'm on on Skype started getting bored of it.
